One of the basic requirements for VMware Image level backups is that the target device should be a DD device, so no you can t backup a VM image level backup to a TL, You can however clone the image level backups to tape.
Hi, First I would like to Thank you for your effort and teaching us in a very easy way. I have a question that if we need to open the port then where it should open:- will it be in network firewall or windows firewall? TY
Thank you for your comment. You would need to have the ports open on all the firewalls that are in the path between the client and the server this includes the network firewalls, the OS firewalls and other network component that would filter packets in between.
For now the NVP based VM backup support only Data Domain device. Since a having NAS as the storage is only supported for AFTD this is not possible at the moment. You could clone the VM backups on a DD device to AFTD though.
HI Sir, Thanks for the informatic video, i have one query regarding the Vproxy sharing between two ESXI cluster, in case of if we have multiple VM clusters in environment. is that possible single Vproxy can manage the workload for two cluster.
Thanks for your comment ! Yes, one vProxy can handle upto 24 sessions at a time(please check latest info, my info might be old). You can have one vProxy handle multiple clusters but keep in mind that the use of Hotadd and NBD depends on the availability of a direct path to the storage hosting these VM's from the vProxy hosts.
Thank for your comment. I think I explain this in the video, The vProxy acts a client for the backup and is responsible for requesting the snapshot on the vCenter. Once the snapshot is completed the vProxy then mounts the image as a temporary mount point and streams this as backup data to the DD. Only saveset metadata is generated and no index is generated during a VM image level backup.
Hello crazyrov. I have posted a question for you on the Dell emc community. Can you please help me out there. I have automated the creation of protection group, client,VMware,workflow. I am not able to create actions using networker rest API. Please help me with this
Thanks for your question Anurag! The VM image level backup shows up as full even though you have set an incremental backups. in the background it backups only the changed blocks but only if CBT is enabled. while restoring you can restore from any copy since all of them are treated as full by NetWorker.
The query which you have posted is already there in the document. Can you be a little more specific on what should be the API and what should be the body and what should be the method and what should be the name of action.
I haven't tested this but this should it. I can test it out next weekend if you are still having issues getting this completed. Method: PUT API endpoint: /nwrestapi/v3/global/protectionpolicies/Engineering/workflows/ClientProtection Body: { "actions":[ { "name":"Backup", "actionSpecificData":{ "backup":{ "backupSpecificData":{ "traditional":{ } } } } } ] }
Good video. I have question. I don't have Data domain system. I have a NAS. Can i add NAS as a advanced file type device in networker and write the VMware vproxy backup on it.
Yep, that is very much possible. Map it to the backup server or to one of the storage nodes and create an aftd on it. Make sure to add credentials in the device properties incase of cifs.
@@crazyrov I have tried the same. I mapped NAS using iscsi initiator on the storage node and in the networker add it as a aftd device. Normal file system backups are working fine but the problem only occurs when i try to create a workflow for vmware vms backup inside the policy. I cant see the aftd device in the media pool. I can only see DDboost media pools that are available from Data Domain.
For dd you need to use dd there is no other option. This is to support the instant recovery feature that nw provides.. But I think its going to change in the upcoming versions.
can you help me? i try this step but there was an error when creating the proxy. "Name 'vproxy02' is not a valid host name as it cannot be resolved in DNS. Please add it to DNS or the hosts file and flush the networker server's DNS cache"
Hi Theo, the error indicates that the hostname of the vProxy cannot be resolved to an IP address. In case you do not use a DNS, try making an entry for the vProxy hostname into your backup servers hosts file.
Pretty simple actually. You use Hotadd in case the vProxy has direct access to the Storage where the VM resides which is usually the case if you deploy the vProxy in the same Cluster as the VM that you are trying to back. You use NBD(Network Block device) when there is no direct access to the Storage and to mount the snapshot on the vProxy you have to send the data via TCPIP network. @@crazyrov Thank You so much for your response bro. Can we use one vproxy for multiple clusters in one vCenter ? If yes, then which parameter we need to modify on NMC Hotadd or NBD ??
@@niharsamantaray2887 You can but one proxy can handle only a max of 24 concurrent sessions so plan the number of proxy hosts bases on the workload that you need to handle. The Hotadd and NBD can be configured using the session option.
