I put a call out on instagram for more of this footage, as the chat after was it was an absolute battle field. Remember it would have been even hotter for those guys, such an amazing effort.
But that's just poor gear choice. Why not put 48-33 0r 46-30 on your bike and ride instead of walking? With this ratio and a big cassette you can stay on your bike and move by pushing 150W or so.
@@ribbyramone You do realise that on those figures you would be riding at just 5 km/hr. It starts to get hard to stay upright. Now I can do 5 km/hr on that slope but then I would lose so much time that I wouldn't make the 13 hour cutoff. 30 km at 5 km/hr gives 6 hours just on the back of falls alone. Even if you were faster on other parts of it so you averaged 8 km/hr it is still 4 hours or a third of the total allowed time. 150 W is just not enough.
Hands down the best video you’ve created, Chris. You summed up the BOF perfectly and those moments of your mind going to the absolute darkest places that every Peaker can relate to. Those who did this event in 2020 will remember the compete opposite arctic conditions and fighting hyperthermia. More of this pls and well done mate!
Well I am 74 and a Peaks Virgin, at 172klm the tap on the shoulder was my next stop was the bus. Would I go again hell yes. Unfinished business at 75yrs old.
Dude - I wasn't much of a cycling media consumer prior to stumbling upon your channel. But you guys - legitimately great. This video was fantastic. Yall make it fun.
I came in just under 9 hours, and the number of cyclist i know are stronger than me on the side of the rode walking and sitting was mind blowing, the temptation is real, at that point i just gave myself the new goal of not stopping, I was whimpering and laughing for half an hour. epic day, great video, really captures it perfectly. That dinner plain to falls bit sucked.
7:31 is a quick time! Looks like a race at the start for sure. Go back with a climbing bike aka rim brakes and you will go even better. 1:1 gear ratio. 100-150g of table sugar per hour, 1 liter of water per hour.
The comment at 11 minutes about gear ratios is super real. I never used easier than 34:23 in training for Peaks but spent most of the final climb suffering in a 34:30. I thought I was prepared but was not.
That was great. Good to know even people at your level suffer. Kudos to you and everyone who had a go at it, regardless of their time. Way too hard imo
Epic journey Chris. Glad to see you were able to use Coyly’s pessimism to fuel your desire to finish. Thanks for bring us with, you sir deserve a grand Chapeau!
I had a friend in their late 50's do the race for the first time this year. It nearly killed him. Somehow he persisted on after multiple health issues and didn't give up. He did a time of 12.5 hours, in the rider group 51-59 he came 285th. He learned from this first time how he should have not tried to keep up with the pace rider at the start. Like you explain he said finding a niche group of riders is a better option. I see your quite young, just think how the older riders were feeling. What does surprise me is this race did continue on in a bad heatwave. Sure last years event had the landslide but from what I was told the heat is what made this event like visiting Hell.
Yeah. It’s the heat that makes an already tough climb just complete punishment. It saps the power. Back of falls has practically no shade either until Trapyard Gap which is the first bit of relief you get.
Just loved the video Chris! 😂❤ Here are my favourite bits, evil Edwin is hilarious and a hitter, mick cupitts white kit is …. Well on the day it was probably the best colour for heat but man has he got confidence 😂, and i like that you say that its not that calculated but its about getting the best out of yourself and enjoying the moment. Like mike Tyson said, everyone’s got a plan until they punched in the face! Keep up the great videos, keep up the pod, keep up the positive vibes. 🎉😂
Cheers Mate! Awesome job. I started cycling in 2016, when I turned 42, and I've been following your channel since then. 42680 miles in, and I love to go out and suffer in the climbs of Southern California. Thanks for all these years of inspirational videos.
It was soooo hot on the back of Falls. I lost a solid 20-30mins up there with the worst cramps I've ever experienced (and I cramp frequently). Both legs completely locked up with every muscle cramping at once. Huge shout-out to the kindly stranger who gave me a salt tablet, totally saved my ride. Still happy with my 9hr 13m but really wanted that sub 9 finish jersey. You're dead right about the "death zone" I was solo for most of it. Cost me big time!
Feel the need to comment, that was a great video, cudos on the honesty of "felt like walking", "it's just the video" rather than editing so you look like a monster .... more please
Class video. What a great route for a challenge for all abilities, spread out climbs, closed road descents, the heat, and the reality that most face at events like these. P.S. that last climb is mouthwatering, reminds me of the aftermath on Alp d'Huez in the Marmotte, frying pan temps.
Loved this, thanks Chris! It's giving me some inspiration for the Snowy Classic tomorrow, and possibly aiming for Peaks next year. I'll be miles/hours behind your front groups, but for me it's just the challenge of doing it at all.
Thanks for posting this Chris, great video. As a Nero fan, I was curious to know how you went. Good to see how it played out at the pointy end - most of us don't get to see that! :) Glad you posted the nutrition info as well, and it's interesting that you only stopped for water. Do you think you'd be able to descend that quickly on a 1x?
That 10 tooth would make the descents very manageable, the ascent of the back side of falls is another ball game all together. I think you would need a 1 to 1 ratio at a minimum
Well done Chris! This is hands down the best video I have ever seen on your channel. From an old fart who has ridden all the European classics, respect!!
"The memory maker". Spot on mate. I'm not in your class but 2024 was my second peaks finish, and when I finally got over that last hump at Mt Cope, I was choking up proper. I think it was just the relief that I finally knew I was going to make it. It was hard to see the road for a bit there! :)
I think I stole that line from one of the guys I was chatting to after the ride, but he was spot on. It's such a unique sensation, but I honestly think it fulfils some primal emotion that we crave. Thanks for the comment mate and congratulations on the ride.
I've heard you say you want to ride in Japan so I recommend coinciding a trip with a Japan PEAKS event. They are shorter at around 180km but have at least 5000m of climbing.
Thanks for the recap Chris! It was great to see you joining the ride; and well done in tough conditions. Bring your podcast mate to Peaks next year! Would be interesting to witness who comes first of you two 😈
I think you cracked the code of telling event stories the Chris Miller way. Really well done and engaging. And feels like a unique style, very different from lets say VC and, thus, "authentic". Well done!
Really enjoyed this video. I'm a retired runner from too many injuries, so I'm cycling now. Hearing you talk about the race really makes me miss the challenges of racing - especially that feeling of loneliness and being out of energy, but pushing through it.
One of my club mates did it in 7.58 Phenomenal you people who can do such times or even just finish in the time cut!! I attempted the 250km Alpine Classic years ago which covers a slightly longer version of the same route and pulled the pin at around 210km and 4,000m on the Garmin. I was fried. Shattered. Dead. 40C temperatures going up back of Falls in the early afternoon cooked me. People vomiting in the ditch. Ambulances picking up a people in heat distress. Yet it was snowed same weekend the previous year. For the average cyclist the conditions are just another pile of hurt on top of the hurt from all the climbing
"In reality you're just desperately following the wheel in front of you" I can relate to this :D. Thanks for this video it has inspired me to push a bit on an upcoming event I have mate
Thanks Chris, great video. Totally agree about not focussing on time but on positions relative to your age group and overall. I had a goal of top 20% overall and 10% in age group and missed by a whisker in each. I blew it on Hotham but managed Falls without stopping/walking. I have never seen so many shattered people. Such a tough but great day. Congrats on such a great ride
Great video Chris, really enjoyed that. What a great effort 👌 something i would love to do but there is nothing like that in Ireland and certainly nit in westher like that!!!
Congrats . Live local enjoy the hills . We got hit with a late summer Falls creek after 11pm damn has a few exposed spots dammmn hot Seen you once at buffalo you where comming down years back .
a sterling effort cm, brilliant ride and fantastic production quality. as the day went on, it got more and more extreme weather wise, but plenty kept going. its really just one big personal journey with like minded people in an epic environment for cycling. coyle must have some serious fomo after watching this. Just shows with your experience and know how you pulled out a beauty - as hollywood said 'the mind is your greatest weapon'. chapeau
Mate I’m in awe of the guys and girls doing that in 10+. I simply wouldn’t have the determination to suffer for that long. Thanks for the kind words about the video, glad you enjoyed the story
Really enjoyed watching. A progressively narrated style of ride video that is about 1/10th to 1/20th the actual ride length works well. Reminds me of vc adventures and Dylan’s gravel ride video style. Longer videos are great for watching on the indoor trainer.
That's a pretty good video; you got me inspired. I might try the Peaks Challenge at some stage, maybe 2026! It would be nice if you and Jess could discuss on the show what it takes for the superhumans to finish it under 7h 30m, but it would also be nice to explore the under 9 and under 10 hours as well.
Showing the people walking their bikes up the hill is a nice change of pace. It's the reality for the majority of riders.
@@ribbyramoneIt's not even that easy to do 150W after 7-8hrs of riding in +40C. You can even hear Chris saying he is doing 100W on the flat at 13:40
@@ribbyramone You do realise that on those figures you would be riding at just 5 km/hr. It starts to get hard to stay upright. Carnage was there in top 20-50s as well. Guys who train 500km weekly also stopped cramped walked and cried lol

Thanks man! That’s so cool to read 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Every race needs a recap like this. So well done 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Oh cheers man! Next year on the 1x 🫣
Well I am 74 and a Peaks Virgin, at 172klm the tap on the shoulder was my next stop was the bus. Would I go again hell yes. Unfinished business at 75yrs old.

My legs are cramping watch that
Top shelf vid Chris.Really enjoyed it.
Thanks Big Boss! 2025?
I came in just under 9 hours, and the number of cyclist i know are stronger than me on the side of the rode walking and sitting was mind blowing, the temptation is real, at that point i just gave myself the new goal of not stopping, I was whimpering and laughing for half an hour. epic day, great video, really captures it perfectly. It sounded like a war zone, so impressed with everyone who got up that thing.
7:31 is a quick time!

Cheers man! Enjoy the bubble tea 😁
That was great. Good to know even people at your level suffer. Kudos to you and everyone who had a go at it, regardless of their time. Way too hard imo
I'm in awe of the guys and girls out there for any length of time, cheers for the comment.
Great video - Can confirm 40c+ temps frying pan conditions from Dinner Plain to Anglers Rest, by far the hottest conditions I have ever ridden.
#the💀zone
The DEATH ZONE. I still remember it 11 years later!

Congratulations Chris, wonderful effort. That “death Zone cooked me this year”. Bring on 2025. Evil Edwin lol made me laugh

Loved how you edited this together - some nice underlying stories - capped with a really impressive result 💪
Agree with the sentiment Chris. To summarise 7:30 hrs on the bike succinctly in 17mins is a cracking effort. Thanks for the content 👍
As a fan of The Nero show I ended up listening to this while doing chores. So good! Excited to actually watch it. Two thumbs way up!
CONGRATS Chris 👏 - WELL Done = Your Ride Performance, Episode, Video & Audio. One very tough Australian Alps event.😎

Probably the best YT cycling video I’ve ever seen. Absolutely loved it. Congratulations on both race and the video.
❤️
Feel the need to comment, that was a great video, cudos on the honesty of "felt like walking", "it's just the video" rather than editing so you look like a monster .... more please
Great video. Full credit to anyone who even attempts this ride 👏👏👏
Awesome Chris 💪
Great video, and well done on completing it in under 8 hours. That's a big achievement!
Excellent recap. Omeo to Anglers Rest. On profile looks fine. In reality at 40 degrees an 'easy' 4 km climb at about 4 % became something else !
Amazing effort on a killer ride! Well done to all who made it.
Congrats mate, great ride. When I built my new bike, I put a 10/36 cassette just in case 😂
MILLER you're a BEAST!! You and VC could kill it!
“The Memory Maker” - YES. Great shout, Chris. That’s what life on the bike is all about.
Great video and congrats on your sixth place. Loved how real you kept this video with the Instagram footage and the end chat.
Thanks Sharon 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Beautifully conveyed beauty of cycling, personal challange, and Australian roads. More of those please !
Well done Chris. Excellent video and commentary. Some VC vibes to this.
Congratulations on the result, and well done on the re-cap. Just long enough to tell the story and give a ride feel. Thank you.
It takes balls to do that good for you.Go get them

Now this is the kind of content I want to see!
Great video. Awesome effort
It was a scorcher 🥵 of a day. I lasted only 150km on my 20kg Fat bike but it was still a great day.
Congratz Chris!!! I enjoyed watching it!!! Your an absolute legend Mate!! 🚴♂️🚴♂️💪🏽💪🏽
This is amazing content, came back to watch for a second time.
Getting geed up for a first crack at this insane event!
Really well put together with great insight. Thanks again, amazing 🎉
Much appreciated!
Loved this, thanks Chris! It's giving me some inspiration for the Snowy Classic tomorrow, and possibly aiming for Peaks next year. I'll be miles/hours behind your front groups, but for me it's just the challenge of doing it at all.
So far the most complete from on the saddle video of the latest Peaks Challenge 2024 that's been put together. Congrats Chris. Job well done!

Sugar, sugar is your friend on epic rides 😊
This was absolutely Brilliant Chris, thanks for taking me along for the ride (watched this in a cafe in Tokyo)
Glad you enjoyed it!
Edwin did well setting the pace early!!👏👏
Well done Chris! This is hands down the best video I have ever seen on your channel. From an old fart who has ridden all the European classics, respect!!
Thanks man! Must say I'm very jealous of your Palmarés
Congratulations on completing 3 peaks and the time you complete it in👌.
I enjoyed your recap and found it motivating. I may even do it again???
Go for it!

Now we are talking! Sounds great
Wow what a ride Chris! Smashed it. This is also the best peaks video I’ve seen, loved it 👍👍👍
Absolutely love that. Some epic drone shots there
Great video mate and an exceptional result. It took me 12hrs plus and was the hardest day in the saddle I have ever had.
Oh man! That is unbelievable, you should be so proud. Anyone who takes that monster on is a bloody hero.
Slicker than the old days obviously but that's the kind of content that got me going in the first place ! Thanks for sharing.
CM Adventures channel coming up. This is on par with our vegan mate! Well done
Stunning effort, love these videos, you out there pushing the pedals and inspiring us to ride!
Well done !
Thanks for the recap Chris! It was great to see you joining the ride; and well done in tough conditions. Bring your podcast mate to Peaks next year! Would be interesting to witness

You have nailed this video….. peaks is everything to so many cyclists just to finish. You explaining what suffering on a bike is about is perfect 👊
Great video. Would love to see more of this in 2024.
One of my club mates did it in 7.58 Phenomenal you people who can do such times or even just finish in the time cut!!

Thanks Tim, that back side of Falls was truly a war zone.
Great story telling. Loved it. Would you change anything about your nutrition strategy?
I wouldn't change any nutrition, but I would certainly add some heat adaption.
So cool you have a low heart rate when at hard effort. I’m not the only one.
Great commentary on the ride. I enjoyed it
Stunning effort Chris! Very nice to see videos like this from time to time!
That was a brilliant video/ race explanation. I enjoyed that a lot. Thank you for this work🔨💪🏻
I hate climbing so i just couldn't do this. Huge respect and congrats.
Best peaks vid ever made.
Well done everyone champ!!!
Thanks man!
Great video Chris, really enjoyed that. What a great effort 👌 something i would love to do but there is nothing like that in Ireland and certainly nit in westher like that!!!
Boom, great content and great riding, you are some rider Chris.
So glad you enjoyed the video Steven 🙏🏻
Great video brother
Sensational effort Chris. 👏 👊💪🥂 Great footage as well 🤙🚵♂️
Glad you enjoyed it
Yes been waiting for this, since you mentioned it on the podcast. Yes lad. More of this would tickle this material would tickle the fancy 😅
Awesome Chris, well done. Truly enjoyable film.
Thanks a ton!
Your videos are always so well done. Thank you for putting in the work the results were worth it. Congrats on your final placing as well. Cheers
Cheers man, stoked you enjoyed the video
This is awesome
Thanks man. Glad you enjoyed it
Again congrats on top 10, excellent video too. You killed the descents!
Thanks Sam. It’s kind of weird being congratulated on the result, when just finishing that this is an achievement. But I’m glad you enjoyed the story.
Love the Hippie stuff section :)
I've been waiting for this video after listening to the podcast. It looks like a beautiful place to ride.
Great video, mate! It makes me want to come back to this side of the world to ride it again!
Haha!! You say that now mate, but come July, I’ll be the one who’s jealous 😉
Congrats . Live local enjoy the hills . We got hit with a late summer
Falls creek after 11pm damn has a few exposed spots dammmn hot
Seen you once at buffalo you where comming down years back .
a sterling effort cm, brilliant ride and fantastic production quality. as the day went on, it got more and more extreme weather wise, but plenty kept going. its really just one big personal journey with like minded people in an epic environment for cycling. coyle must have some serious fomo after watching this. Just shows with your experience and know how you pulled out a beauty - as hollywood said 'the mind is your greatest weapon'. chapeau
Mate I’m in awe of the guys and girls doing that in 10+. I simply wouldn’t have the determination to suffer for that long. Thanks for the kind words about the video, glad you enjoyed the story
this is so exciting to watch! much better than most race recaps, kudos!
Amazing, Chris! Well done! Incredible vid too. Only way to top this is to get Jesse out there next time. 👊🏻
HAHA!!! In all honesty , the more events I can do without him ... the better, he's too strong 😂
Doing my first long race this year (Jotunheimen Rundt). This is great inspiration. Thank you
Great stuff Miller really enjoyed that 🎉
Loved that Chris, what an achievement fella, it looked brutal at the end. Great commentary and just a great video
Thanks Stephen, so glad you enjoyed it.
