This games mechanics still impresses me to this day, especially the u turns. Thx for giving us this important infos.
I have played CTR since I was a kid and never knew about these techniques. After playing online, I realised that I was missing something crucial and here it is. Thanks for the video, I'm sure I will suddenly enjoy CTR a lot more once again!
I think this concept is simplified if you just consider the role of each key.
1. Holding the down key (button or toggle) will allow you to brake at any point without canceling boost. I call this the U-turn key.
2. Holding brake will cause your turns to be much sharper, and obviously slow the kart when grounded too. (Air brake will simply rotate the kart. Adding U-turn key will truly turn the kart, which is much faster.)
3. Spamming jump simply reduces the slowing motion of braking by giving the kart 'free air-time'
Now I'm able to beat my best time or even Oxide ghost in Time Trial. Once again, thank you for this amazing and fully detail tutorials.
Thanks for the tips, mate. Really appreciate that. You did a good job at explaining everything, awesome video.
This is basically impossible for me as i use analog stick and its very hard to pull off. I simply cant play with arrow keys :)
I get what you mean I had a tough time as well but it is possible to do with an analog stick.
what I did is learn how to do the mini u turns with analog, and when I need to do a large u turn (like turbo track) I quickly switch a little bit before in preparation then do it that way.
Hey man, I understand what you mean! But I promise you if you made yourself learn how to play with the d pad over analog within a week you’ll find it was completely worth it ! Every ctr player who moves from analog to d pad will tell you it was entirely beneficial
Jaybeany San theredhotbr plays analog and he is one of the best CTR players. He does use the D-pad for airbrake and U-turn though.
Stig Lauren wow I didn’t know he played analog ! All the more respect too him 😊 I’m not saying it’s impossible at all but it’s certainly harder
I needed this video first! Lol great guide especially learning that shortcut on the track before you pop your Patreon at the end. Didn't know about that and now maybe I can beat some time trials and get my champion cart
Is kind of amazing that CTR seems "simple" on the surface, accelerating and breaking. But not really, there a plethora of advanced techniques to get more and more speed... and afterwards, to maintain that speed. Awesome
Thanks for the guides dude, that was useful especially for ring rally, time trial, and online races
mind blown...ive been playing this game for close to 20 years (including the classic ps1 version of course) and this is a whole new avenue of techniques to master~...I always felt like the hard difficulty on the newer games weren't just difficult, but downright unfair...but looks like these techniques should definitely get me around those!
You’re videos make my day bro 💓
Cheers for the advanced advice. Still need to work on the 'jump-spam' method, myself, but your tips have helped me improve over these last few months.
cheers!
Bruh. I'm I glad I finally stumbled upon this video. I could easily do Aerial U-turns and Mini U-Turns, but I could never figure out regular U-Turns.
I also never knew of holding the brake through the tube in Deep Sea Driving.
Thanks for the tips man really helps
exelent video guide as always.
I managed to beat velo on papu papu without airbreak (1 drifr jump works in the spiral) but with airbreak I managed to improve my time alot :)
Very informative video thank you!
I really hope this helps me beat N Tropy's trials.. Also you are getting close to 3000 subs, keep it up!
almost 3k !
I never knew what this was called the whole time I was doing this wen I was a kid thanks mate. Its alway good to refresh the skills of CTR
Good video. Only thing I'd add is that when U-Turning on the ground you are slowly losing speed, which is why hopping is added as you don't lose any speed whilst in the air.
Also, for players who can't get on with the d-pad (like myself...), there are many controllers available with remappable buttons on the back. I have a PowerA Enhanced Pro Controller for Switch and I've set the button on the back left of the controller to down on the d-pad, so I can squeeze that in and easily do U-Turns whilst still steering with the analog stick.
Can you do that with Xbox? I play d pad but sometimes, especially when I turning to the left, I SWEAR I’m holding down on the d pad and left while breaking and it doesn’t work.
Thanks dude
Good video
I still struggle with u-turning. However, I'm using your tip to hop to keep the blue flame longer and have been able to complete Electron Avenue a little bit faster.
4:36... To prevent losing speed
Loses speed in the scene
it is because he got no nitro reserve left, if you do u turn but you didnt have reserve, you will lose your speed nontheless
Hopefully I can start using this to my advantage against Velo
THIS WAS SO USEFUL! I DID NOT KNOW ABOUT THE FACT THAT I WON'T LOSE BLUE FIRE IF I'M PRESSING THE BACK BUTTON 🤯🤯🤯
the more you know hahaha
thank you it really helps to find these videos to help me get better
P.S my sister showed me your channel
awesome!
For Xbox w/alternate control users:
1. Go to Xbox settings on home screen
2. Find the option to map your controller buttons
3. Map the R1 button to dpad down (this swaps the functions of the two buttons) You can always go back and change this setting back to normal when you're done playing for the day, but it is indeed the most crucial step to the equation.
4. When wanting to Uturn, you must release the acceleration (R2) and quickly hit and hold down R1 (this would have been the down on dpad you would have had to hold down for Uturn which is almost impossible while using analog).
5. While holding R1, also hold brake (x). You must be holding R1 down before adding brakes or you will lose your fire.
6. Now that you are holding R1 and X, spam the L1 (jump) button while using left analog to guide your Uturn.
7. Once finished with the Uturn, release all buttons and resume R2 (acceleration), and drift as soon as possible to maintain fire.
I have done 101% completion of the game, and have gotten to only 9 more Velo times to beat, and just today learned this from watching The Viperian. I can't believe I didn't find this sooner but it has breathed new life into playing.
It helped me a lot because sometimes Im losong my full speed and I didnt know why, so thx !
Really thanks ❤
Haha, I'm so stubborn about switching to D-pad, I ended up just mastering the U-turn with the analog stuck. My thumb may hurt cause of the way I hold it, but goddamn does it work.
Thanks a los for the típs 👍🏼 , just ha Ing problems with the mid-U turn, i think is hard to make the u turn move fast and change to continue without lose the speed. Thanks again for the típs, very usefull 👍🏼
Great video!
Thank u!
Very nice TheViperian ! This is a really good guide man, I’m sure the majority of the ctr community will benefit from somebody like yourself giving these more advanced techniques more exposure! You’re getting very good at explaining concepts with the different examples of no air brake vs air brake vs u turn and whatnot! Keep up the great stuff my friend
You explained u turning perfectly! The fact you put so much emphasis on holding DOWN first and letting letting go of down very last is incredibly important as it really makes or breaks the entire thing, people always wondered why they instantly loose flames when they try to u turn and it’s all because they aren’t holding down first and letting go of down last. I wish I had a guide like this when I first started playing properly ❤️
thanks Jaybeany :D
I recently got ctr, gotta wait until friday but you have actually helped me the most. If you didn;t make this video, i would probably suck at the game
awesome, glad I could help :)
This video is so important now with Dev times.
The switch's hand-held is a little bit wonky because it's buttons instead a dpad. Takes sometime to get used to.
About time
thanks mate one question: diference between u turn and uturn while hoping many times on ground? is it just that your reserves stay longer since you cant drift? or is there something else im new to uturning thanks!
Hopping on the ground allows you to sharp turn on the ground. Uturn in the air allows u to sharp turn in the air
The explanation is very well delivered. Simple and understandable. Thank you so much! This, indeed, earned you a sub.
Now I gotta lab this
thank you so much!
I don't speak english, just know the basic, AND MY FRIEND, i think this is the best video teaching everything about the u-turn, some Brazilian channels tried to teach but they dont explain very good, but you speaking in another language teached me more than then xD, thank you and sorry for my bad english
no worries i understand u. happy to help u Felipe
I saw in other of your videos that you take some curves on tracks using
"mini U-turns" and you never lose your fire, I tried a million times to
do that and always my fire gets lost. What i'm doing wrong? and which
tracks are good to practice the u-turning?
LOVE YOU
Hey, I have a question. I am just confused on when you should press the buttons to U Turn. I am very close to the master wheels so I really want to get U Turning down since I will be switching at the last second from the analog stick to the D-Pad in certain sections.
When you are in the air, you press brake first, then do you press the direction you want to go first or do you press the down button first? Also when you are on the ground, is it the same way or do I have to do it in a different order?
can you answer this Viperian pls?
How can I trust the veracity of this video if you don't have a raid shadow legend ad? smh
But seriously, thanks for the guide again, I really like how you take the time to explain all the implications
This video is sponsored by RAID: SHADOW LEGENDS
@@TheViperian how do you u turn on xbox your an awesome youtuber btw also what is the down arrow key
Thnx
thx
Great guide, thanks! One thinng that confuses me is why this is done with the D-pad rather than the stick?
I find it very awkward to move my fingers between the two. Seems i’m able to do some form of air brake but i have to pepper the brake key once or i lose the flame ):
Dpad gives u precision. Stick is hard to get precise
@@TheViperian ahh right i see! Thanks!
After playing mariokart I thought I was good at racing. This game shattered that illusion. Time to get good
Hey Viperian, could you please do a how to/tips video on getting a perfect boost at the start of the race?
Hmmm this actually sounds like a good idea. I will consider it!
Is there a way to you turn like this while not in the air? Just driving on land? I've tried it and just slow down immediately.
I SWEAR that I hold down on the D pad and left and break and sometimes my reserves completely end AND sometimes I a turn but my kart keeps drifting to the side and not actually U turning. Maybe the video explains it but I only use the D pad for CTR and know how to U turn but sometimes it doesn’t seem consistent and I really think I am doing it the same way every time. Also, the d pad quits working properly on Xbox remotes all the time, every couple months and I have to get another remote.
I'm still not sure I totally get it. Do you ALWAYS hold square while u-turning, or is down enough in some situations? You always have to hop to u-turn, right? The 3 different types of u-turning pretty much sounded like the same thing to me, with the only difference being how many times you hop.
I am visually impaired by the way, so I might have missed some visual stuff in the guide.
U-Turning is the act of Holding Down, Square & The direction you wanna go to.
So yes, as long as you are in the air, you are ALWAYS holding the Square Button to do a sharp turn.
Can you make a video on U-Turning with the analog stick? I know you recommend to always use the D-Pad, but the analog stick is just more fun to use in my opinion.
It's almost impossible to be consistent making U-turn with analogue pad. You always have to move your pad perfectly to 45°.
Probably, but very very little.
Some tracks like retro stadium, turbo track, drive thru danger, dragon mines, oxide station, hyper spaceway that dont allow you to use the analog stick while perform u-turning but use arrowkey buttons for better performance, and myself too always use the analog stick for u-turning
I would love to for the analog stick users. Problem is tho, that I suck at analog u-turning lol. It doesn't seem viable at all
@iPeteEE its not even a challenge just calm down just some tracks that i mention that i feel suck when u-turning with analog stick
So if I do the U-Turn I habe to press jump, dann let go of X, pushing square and the direction arrow plus down arrow and then? do I have to press the acc button after hitting the ground again? For me its not quite clear when I have to stop pushing the brake after the u turn
Afaik you can hold the down arrow indefinitely but always release the brake (square on ps4) before letting go of the down arrow or all momentum and flames/reserves will be lost. So basically don’t push square before down arrow
I love this game🎮!!!!!
Does this u-turn work on the classic ps1 ctr? I just want to know
Can u turning be done with the analogue sticks, moving them ↙️ or ↘️?
Yes BUT with the dpad is way more precise.
With the stick is less accurate
@@TheViperian thanks. I remapped down to l2 as someone below suggested (I have dexterity issues, play one handed) and it worked a treat, already getting better. Nitros Oxide times, here I come!
@@TheViperianwould you recommend switching over to d-pad entirely or only for u turns? The d-pad seems finicky at times
So i try to u turn on your example buti lose fire/ speed. What am I doing wrong?
Hey if you still respond to comments, I've read you can remap down and then tape it so it's always enabled to make U turns easier. Thoughts? what about remaps in general?
Haven't done any remapping myself so u can't comment on this. I would prefer to do it manually
@@TheViperian thanks mate
This might be a dumb question, and I can do u turning, but I mess it up a lot. When you do a u-turn after you jump, do you hold the jump button while pressing the u turn keys or do you let go of the jump button before you press u turn keys?
An example like cortex castle. After the bit where you decide to go left or right. At the jump before you reach the 2 spiders, (where the wumpa fruit box is behind one) when I do that jump, I hold the jump key, then press the u turn keys, still holding jump button, let go of u turn buttons, still holding the jump button so when I land I go straight into a drift. Is that how you're supposed to do it?
Approach Turn > Jump > Let Go Of Jump Key > Hold U Turn Key (Left / Right Arrow + Down Arrow + Square) > Let Go After U Turn & Before Touching Floor
@@TheViperian Thanks mate, that might be why I screw it up so much. I usually lose fire after I land or I screw off into a different direction. My hardest u-turns are the ones that are not high in the air, like the example I gave. More like racing on the track, like turbo track, keeping my fire through those u-turns is so hard, or the tight turns in oxide station, cortex castle, and the hated gingerbread joyride shortcut. because I race with analog, then switch to dpad when I want to do the turn, that is also wh I mess it up a lot, I'm not quick enough. I just noticed you done a video on u turning with analog, I will watch that.
Apologize If you have already done, and I haven't spotted it, but could you do a guide for thunderstruck, I just can't keep blue fire through the spinning things to the finish line, I either get whacked by the spinning things, go off the track, mess up my line and lose fire through the bends after or I lose it on the tight turn before the hammer things before the finish line. Be nice to understand this track better so I can at least beat Velo if not the dev time.
Thanks again for your response.
I watched this, took your advice, and also watched your other video, changed my button, it makes u turning with analog so much easier. I just managed to do 3 laps of drive-thru danger with blue flame all the way. beating my previous time by 20 seconds. then beat it again by another 2 seconds. Also managed to carry the blue flame on hot air skyway for the first time. Good tips :)
I’m struggling to do the mini u-turn I can do everything else but I’m not releasing the down key last I keep getting it mixed up
I dont know what to do
Awesome guide btw
practice makes perfect
or u can just let go of everything before landing, i do that
TheViperian dude that’s genius I’m going to try it out
damn this almost makes PlayStation a straight upgrade due to the ergonomics
and what u you use as ur primary kart settings? balanced? speed? turn?
Speed or drift
Hey man, just a heads up: The link to join your discord isn't working.
discord website is having issue at the moment. Save the link & try again a few minutes later :)
@@TheViperian Aight, thank you my dude :)
The Switch version's d-pad makes this even more frustrating to master
Yeah I know, no choice tho
You mean the Joycons? 'cause in this case, I agree with ya, such a mess, and that's why I still find the PS's Dual Shock controller the best for CTR - or at least controllers with similar D-Pads.
I bought a Horipad in order to have better control, because of the D-Pad (with it's "hat", not without it, because it'll be the same with the Joycon)
Ah so THATS what you meant with 3 ways of U-Turning
Only thought the 2nd one counted
Just leaving a comment for engagement
Thats so nice of you 😆
I can't adapt to using D-pad. It was easy in the past but now I can't.
muscle memory is key. after 1 week of dpad, you will start feeling it again
How long will it take for a total beginner that finds pressing too many buttons at once too painful for my autistic brain to get used to u turning if i play once a week for 1-2 hours? It looks intimidating to me. What tracks can i practice the u turns on without fear of time trails?
Electron avenue is a good beginner track to learn UTurning
"Hold Down" huh? I honestly never tried that... And I still have Deep Sea Driving to take down, to say nothing of the yet to be released Dev Ghosts...
Yeah Holding down is a staple in a perfect U-Turn
What track is the best track to practice u-turn
Electron Avenue :D
@@TheViperian really. Thanks
Dragon minds also has the spiral ramp that feels really nice to hit with a u turn.
@@jessejive117 Yes it does. Applying u-turn on dragon mine's spiral makes it so easy to beat velo ghost.
Good I only got u turning
I got seizures in my hand after trying this.
the harderst is the mini U Turns
Here's me not even knowing the square button even had a use lol
Wow I never U-turned before & Airbrake
Whats the Brake button? 4:27
Square
Doing the second type of U turn don’t work that well for me
Can you make a Minecraft video with the wither storm
New player here, this sounds interesting. Will play around with it and try to get used to new tricks.
Cheers
Cheers m8!
Huh, I've been doing it wrong then
So i Need to leave the analog sticks?
Well, not really but it will be harder to control with analog sticks, only if you can master it.
You don't have to, but U-Turning with the D-Pad is a lot more consistent
If you move to d pad within a week you’ll for see all the benefits bro trust me , I used to be a analog player myself but all of the really good players use d pad for a reason :)
high suggested to leave analog for this one.
you can drivee around with analog, but moving to dpad just for uturning can be tedious sometimes. so i advice to focus on fully dpad
TheViperian i just played with the dpad, it was impossible lol, like learning the game from the start :/
I loike how you update this
thank you!
Well Ive never Beat a Devoloper Time Trial
If you can u-turn without jumping, then why do people jump when doing it?
it doesnt deplete reserves as much, plus u can turn more
Second i think lol
BRO I CANT DO IT IVE BEEN TRYING TO AIRBRAKE FOR 30 MINUTES AND I CANT EVEN GET A GOOD JUMP HOW IS IT SIMPLE??
Wait a minute i have Airbrake before witch now in the Past
Skip to 1:54
i know what i did wrong i did'nt take the down arrow key last
Wish this was possible with. A stick
These tips are vital to beating velo. Take it from the master, your in good hands with viperion. He knows best
Natalie Hishun you’re the master? And it’s spelt you’re, not your.
@@jessejive117 sorry
This shit is fucking hard; I give up
On the last air brake and u turning video u got air brake and u turning mixed up because u did a u turn but that was not a air break. I am not mad people always make mistakes
which is why i made this updated guide
This is to hard 😭😭😭
I literally cried doing the u turn I can’t get it right my fingers are so stupid I hate it
dont feel bad about it. it took me months to master it
I literally cried, because of your comment reminds myself, as I can't do the U-Turn most of the times... Also don't be hurt yourself, you'll be fine!
Video starts at 1:48
I just cant for some reason master it even aftee 600 hours and beating like 13 dev times...
It annoys me the most because I beat all the crash games Ive played max% and I cant this one
Jesus you did the relics for the other crash games and this is giving you a problem. This game should be light work for you
@@Xumbie its different, platformers and racing
anyways eventually I got gud at uturn and am now at 31/39, but took a break, will try to get the rest of them sometime
crash cove was easy for me but turbo track is hell
@@PenguinPero yeah that makes sense, from what I know the crash games just have platinum relics I think but nothing like dev challenges or anywhere near that level
@@Xumbie some actually have dev times, like crash 4 toys for bob relics, but unnecessary for 106% completion and imo way easier than ctr dev times
probably because they released with the game, unlike ctr where devs actually had a lot of time to improve and do pretty good
where are you from? just asking
Malaysia :)
TheViperian Is that where malayonnaise is from?

There’s still people saying Mario kart is the more challenging game (rip)
It has nowhere near as much depth
