The way his addiction is personified as an aggressive but fragile creature, always loudly and insistently egging him on, and scaring away the albatross (the embodiment of reformation and hope) is so good. Way to tell a story without words. (Besides the glass man’s anyway)

I’ve never seen alcoholism portrayed in this way, intimidating at first but even when broken on the floor it’s just happy to get another drink, smiling at you while your/it’s body crumbles to bits along with your life

The word albatross is sometimes used metaphorically to mean a psychological burden that feels like a curse. An Albatross was a major character in the 1798 poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. In the poem, an albatross starts to follow a ship - being followed by an albatross was generally considered a sign of good luck. However, the titular mariner shoots the albatross with a crossbow, which is regarded as an act that will curse the ship. The bird is placed on the sailor's neck by shipmates to show the guilt in killing it. Therefore, the albatross can be both an omen of good or bad luck, as well as a metaphor for a burden to be carried as penance.

My only sister died from alcoholism August 29 2019. She was only 33. Alcohol turned her from a gorgeous, outgoing, fun loving, caring and sweet spirited girl to a monster I no longer recognized. She left behind her family, fiancé and 2 children (my precious niece and nephew).
This video resonates with me on a very emotional level. I am still very angry with her in my own grief but I’m getting better and learning to forgive her with lots of help from the Lord and His mercy

Addiction, crawls from the depths of our minds with an offer of goodwill and kindness, but if someone continues to appease it's wants and needs it will ultimately force itself upon you, either you accept it's offer to continue, or you beat it back in defiance. "Let her rip", and forget about everything, or refuse to drink and take notice of the beauty right on your shoulder.

Im 51 Native American M in Michigan. This really hit home. This was my story in a cartoon. Bird and everything . I was told awhile back when I sobered up I'd hear or see my story. Alcohol WAS my best friend. Its been a bit since Ive seen or heard it but this DEFINITELY fits the mold of my story. At the end when the bottle is empty and going down to bottom I believe he was saved by the bird and was looking at himself and what has become of himself. Shakes and All. God Bless You All for the Video 🙏

I have a relative who gets drunk to escape the pains of reality, but his emotions can be too much.
I can easily reflect his situation with this beautifully animated short. Those bottles of Jack Daniels sure are an alluring sign of temptation, yet only the foolish who believe it would bring peace would slam a bottle down, even though they will still boil with anger.

Awesome animation. the ending is quite twofold, since the bottle that is being thrown by the fisherman is reaching the bottom empty and when he was sitting with the bird it still had some liquor in it. Now the REAL problem with all that is that it's used often as a substitute FOR storytelling rather than an aide. A simple set of props to distract the audience, nothing more. Today I cranked this same bottle mixed in with a smoothie. I let go of drinking rum for a long time now because it had made me a skinny person and a verbally aggressive person. I use to be healthy and strong and through 3 years of non stop drinking it changed my mindset and my body. It wasn’t till my mom one day said to me I needed to stop drinking as my alcohol consumption was playing a big role into why we were always verbally fighting. I heard those words and took a look at my self and realized she was right. In that same time I had saw this video and took it to heart. I drank Ed today thinking I had overcome all and that I’d be fine with just a little I now realize I was wrong and will never take another sip of rum. Today after I dranked the smoothie with alcohol everything seemed to trigger me. I felt short tempered and frustrated over the small things. Thank you god for allowing me to be self aware of my own behavior. I now see that this alcohol will only sink me to the bottom and it’ll be my own doing that will drown me if I continue to drink. I drink a beer every once and a while but I don’t like beer as I don’t like having to piss every 5 minutes or so. But thinking now I think I may never touch another bottle of alcohol again a day in my life. I don’t want to be my own poison. Fuck alcohol and fuck the demons that take over your soul when your drunk and defenseless. I’m 24 I started drinking heavy at 18 and I thank god I saw and recognized my wrongs early in life. Many will grow old and realize when it’s to late. But not me.
