@@mageeknailmahs669I wouldn’t say it’s that low at all, Tommy and Dylan Moran are superb, as is Dara Ó Briain. Foil Arms and Hog are doing very well worldwide at the moment, Andrew Maxwell, Ed Byrne and Aisling Bea do well in Britain, as does David Nihil in the US. The issue IMO is more of depth than talent, Ireland isn’t big enough to sustain many comedians.
But when you kicked that into the arts, the amount of musicians, writers, comedians, actors, songwriters and compare it percapita it's an impressive amount.
I love all the guests in one way or another but I really love when a comedian's brain is at work. Tommy at his resting state is locked in. I bet it is torture at times but homie just sat for an hour an said some very profound shit off the dome while also being fairly hopeful at the baseline. Good episode.
"Who says truth can be boiled down to a sentence?" I love that. Reminds me of this Ram Dass quote that changed the way I see the world forever. He said "You don't communicate your words, you communicate your being". Your concsiousness bleeds through the words. Food for thought.
Tommy is a walking enigma, he seems so manic on stage but is soulful and thoughtful. He makes some brave jokes and cutting observations on the world and how it was changed around him but he remains unchanged but ever changing. He is the embodiment of a Yeats poem and the tragic spirit of Ireland. We're great Craic on the surface but there is tragedy behind our eyes.
I just absolutely loved this episode. It’s crazy to me when I listen to someone who is Irish and how much it speaks to the Irish within myself. I grew up in Arizona in a predominantly Mexican area and though I am also Latino on my dad’s side, I always felt something was missing. The more as an adult I have interacted with Irish culture, the more I feel seen and I come to better understand myself. They say that DNA can store memories and man, it feels real to me. There is just so much of a sense I get from myself that can just remember what it is to be Irish and when I listen to a podcast like this it just re-enforces that what I feel is true and that some of my quirks are literally from the other side of my genetics. ❤
@@TheLastAngryMan01 my dad had some Irish from both his mom and dad. I suspect my Grampa was Irish in the way you’re implying which would be awesome. But the Irish I get is straight out of the emerald homeland haha
Who you are will reverberate and remind you even unbeknownst to yourself. You'll find it in music, personality (the irish has without doubt the best dry wit I've ever seen, Bill Murray a US born version). They have a way of looking at things that make you laugh. Hugely welcoming people, but they are ruthless at dissing friends for fun. The more the like you the further they will go as opposed to north America in the opposite. Great drinkers, thinkers, fighters and poets are the Irish.
Tommy is a genuine article. I'm an Irishman, currently in Ireland and I wish I could say we are generally like Tommy over here but he's very much a unicorn.
This specific podcast blew my mind! Fantastic interview and so thought provoking. The jester vs. the trickster, they both serve an important purpose in literature and society.
I really do appreciate the time and energy that goes into creating and capturing these interviews. Incredible episode. The Irish Synergy is emanating through my screen. #4TheAlgo
His early stuff is superb, look up Tommy Tiernan town hall Galway for some of his best work. I think he had some personal issues for a while after that, did a lot of shouting on stage, but seems to be in a better place now. He does a talk show in Ireland where he doesn’t know which guests are coming on, literally has to react to them when they walk on, that’s worth a watch.
You can’t fight off the shackles….yeah. At a personal and cultural level, I totally relate to that as an Iranian. Coming back to Iran give been surprised how psychologically painful it has been as there are reminders everywhere of what could have been vs what is. I regret coming back but I can’t easily leave cause coincidentally of the trauma itself (my personal mental health)
The Vatican had a deep effect on me, actually much of the historic sights all across Italy and Europe had a deep and lasting affect on my world view. I am mostly not ‘religious’, however I’ve found community at different difficult times in my life thru a Christian church. I always had questions about the stories, never understood the cognitive dissonance. That being said, I do think faith can be a powerful tool. Looking back on my travels, I think the realization of how old our stories are, how many people have come and gone-so few leaving their mark on our world… all of that suffering. Also, all of the beauty. The history and art and stories… it’s a bit overwhelming. Weirdly, I am more comfortable sitting on a beach contemplating grains of sand in our universe. Maybe that’s beyond humanity? Hmmm…🤦🏽♀️
I love this conversation. I have a thought about comedians getting worse as they get more popular. Metallica's first 5 albums are all amazing. If they stopped there no one would ever say they got worse. They continued to evolve and to be honest it's not as good as it was. It's still better than 75% of other music but it 50% as good as they were. That's still a great career. I think if a huge comedian is the GOAT and makes a bunch of good specials and a landmark sketch show and then doesn't produce at their own elite level anymore does that mean they've gotten worse or that their average has just corrected to a more natural state? Can anyone name any of the last 6 Rolling Stones Albums? I don't think it's crowd size as much as, even the best, find their average whether its up and down or if the front half of the career is heavily weighted. I saw Carlin's last tour... He was the GOAT for a long time.
I loved Metallica's first five, they were epic... but, their new stuff changed my mind on them and put me off altogether, you should look after your craft... scarcity creates value in artistic endeavors, I hated St Anger... it just didn't feel like the Metallica I loved
Love you both. A little psychoeducation could go a long way for you and everyone who has been on here. Small misunderstandings about neuroscience, social psychology, and self-care could make a lot of people's world's better.
I actually hope he doesn’t read these comments, but I cringe a little every time he talks about his interaction with his girlfriend’s kid. You can’t watch the Brady Bunch and understand parenting or what it might be like to raise someone else’s kid. Stepfather of three talking here.
Have to say as an American born daughter of South American immigrants … all this translates to that continent as well; Colonialism and what survives that is free 🥲
Tommy Tiernan has been one of the best Irish comedians for 30+ years. Good to see him do some podcasts in the US.
Let’s be honest, the bar in Ireland is pretty low
@@mageeknailmahs669left the immersion on 🤣🤣🤣🤣😐🔫

Tommy is a national treasure. Great to see him getting well deserved exposure in the States
First US podcast where the Host actually listened to and encouraged Tommy. It’s by far the best one yet.
Agreed. Tommy was interviewed by Bill Burr (my favorite comedian) but interrupted and didn’t listen.

That was amazing. Felt like what therapy may feel like with a really smart, grounded person.
Absolute best interview of Tommy Tiernan I have ever heard. I can relate to so much of this. Never act on a night thought.

This discussion truly touched my heart. I.
Needed that.
Thank you both.
So excited for this! Two of my favourite comedians!
One of the great episodes
I love both these men and holy craic what an episode.
One of my favorite episodes and I've never heard of Tommy
Not a single ad! Happy birthday Mr. Brennan.
Good good gooooopd episode.
Another great therapy session Neil.
Thanks 😂

Incredible ideas and phrases. I will take them away. Thank you.
Such a good discussion. Flare on gentlemen.
It's like watching someone who speaks Poet in an interview. What a fascinating interview.
That is a poetic statement. 😁
He's so right about those night thoughts. Great show.

You're welcome in Ireland bud. The same individuals who irrevocably carved up your area with pen and paper did the same to mine.
Terrific episode. Flare on!
Whoa. That was great. Thank you. Flare on.
Really great episode. Tommy is funny and thoughtful. Finally, Garry Shandling may have been an actual angel on earth.
incredible episode.

Thanks for another one Neal.
Holy shit, this is fascinating. A fresh brain.
Matthew, Mark, Luke and John has always been my favorite Dion song
Good to see Tommy doing the rounds
What a feckin' good way to think about the meaning of life
wonderful intervirew.
"At some point, you have to surrender to the way you're wired and go with the flow of it." I love me some clowns y'all!
Does he also play the put upon dad from Derry Girls?
Ah he does aye
He does, so he does.
Ah sure, that’d be yer man alright
That was incredible
Love love Tommy ❤❤❤
Deep poetic beautiful thoughts here
That was fucking good
Galway in the late 80s had it hard for blue jeans. That was pretty much the choice back then. Black when your rock is harder.
Despite my critical comments, I think this whole conversation is brilliant.
Tommy Tiernan on Joe Rogan would be a good conversation.
He'd have the sugar ooot yer tea, don't believe a word (rip phil),
Great episode, thanks!
Would love to see Dylan Moran on this podcast
Quite a thinker and interesting takes....
I was only just thinking he’d be the perfect guest! Delighted!

Was Neal mocking the dog with a bone thing? Hopefully, was very dry, not sure his stance on old Jerry.
That was not my take. Sounded like he was complimenting Jerry for speaking a deep truth.
