RiP ROY AND CHICK. QUICK PERSONAL STORIES.Chick responded to a letter I sent him around 1977. He made a 12 year old drummer's day! I will never forget it. A dear friend of mine was lucky enough to reaquainte himself with Roy during the 2013 Jazz cruise. They hung for a bit before Roy hit...I consider myself blessed for both these memories. AND SO IT CONTINUES.
Thank you for sharing. Back in the day i once went on tour with a minidisc player and one disk. Now He Sings Now He sobs. 2 weeks in a buss with that recording and life was never quite the same again.
whoa, a Paiste that sounds like an Istanbul K. but then again, I had a Czechoslovakia-made cheapo machine stamped cymbal (I forgot the brand, they only had one at the time) that's pure magic.
Thank you, Chick. You are such a great storyteller with great stories to tell and with great cymbals! Bless you and stay healthy! We all need you and love you!!!
I love Roys playing very much. Lately been listening to alot of Corea Holland Haynes Metheny Burton. I love Roys playing in that group... and in many others as well 👍
This is the first time I've heard Chick speak, it's so cool he still has that Chelsea accent. I'm from the Boston suburbs, so I get a kick out of hearing legends and heros like Chick and Roy kept their Boston twang. He's even got a Chelsea t-shirt on. Lovely story about one of the most important drummers in history. Roy kept that power and finesse right into old age, his stuff on Metheny's Questions and Answers is legendary.
This is a fun article. Many drummers and others were treated to wonderful information about that particular era of jazz that was just on fire with talent and ideas and lots of change. I have a Paiste 602 20 inch flat ride I bought used from Jacks Drum Shop in Boston in 1974. . The second Chick played it, I knew it was the same cymbal as mine. The sound was undeniably the same. I still use it all the time. It sounds great with nylon tips.
Wow Chick! Thank you for sharing that story about Roy Haynes and the cymbal that was on so many albums, including the awe-inspiring Now He Sings, Now He Sobs album you did way back in the day. Please tell more stories, share philosophies! This was as great as hearing you play. You must be like Henny Youngman: “I’ve got a million of “em”. Jazz stories are just as important to jazz history as the music. Gratitude!
Chicks the man ! First time I saw him Greek theatre in LA 1988 - Electric band with Chick, Dave Weckl, John Patitucci, Eric Marienthal, and Frank Gambale. Wow!. The following that was Herbie Hancock with Micheal Brecker, Darryl Jones, Charlie Drayton and Steve Thorton. What a show indeed. I also got to see him with the Acoustic band and a later version of Electric band.. Always nice to hear the legends.
Thankyou for the history lesson Chick...Iam a drummer myself....I have all of the Return to Forever recordings....As well as individual recordings....Yes Roy Haynes is definitely one of the greats.... His sound is unique....
noooo. was just binge watching Roy's drum solos yesterday and this wow! talk about history! love now he sings. always my go to album whenever I get stressed out. still an amazing album.
I have a very similar one same time period and weight. Love Chick, Love Roy!!! I have the NHSNHS Album and fell in love with it way back. If anyone’s interested let me know. Blessings.
Unbelievable. Just unbelievable. As a young boy I fell in love with this very same clear, bright pingy ride Airto played. No I got to hear its story. I spotted the sound right away, so I knew this must have been the one Airto played. The cymbal sound on that first RTF vinyl very much molded on my taste for cymbals. Thank you mr Corea and thank you RUclips algorithms.
Earlier this evening before I saw this vid, I saw one with Danny Gottlieb playing with Pat Metheny, and it reminded me of my love for flat ride cymbals, as I always wanted one, and the one I found that was perfect years ago, I was too broke to buy lol. Then I see this vid, and that's the sound I found in that flat ride. Roy Haynes, Chick Corea, and Dave Weckl, THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING! YOU ARE THE BEST!
I believe I can remember that cymbal, the 1968 version, from the Album - Return to Forever, ECM. I hear it (and it’s clearly the 1968 version, of the 3 mentioned) played by Airto, in the last section of side 2, La Fiesta. Also the cymbal roll, soon into Track 1 is clearly that cymbal.
Thank you so much for sharing this. I've seen you play with Marcus and Brian Blade but never got to see you play with Mr. Haynes. Your Akoustic Trio album was my intro to jazz (along with Billy Cobham's Spectrum) and it's been a wonderful 25 years listening to your music. All my love to you sir!!!
very cool the Sabian flat ride on your kit almost sounds like Ed Thighpens 18 inch crystal flat ride .very cool cymbal as well .i swear roys cymbal sounds like it was on Romantic Warrior .Great story your the grooviest to Chic .be safe and peace love ya man
thank you Chick for thst wonderful story.those old psistes from 60,s and 70,s were really wonderful and yes that particular flat ride is a very good one..it could be a 602 or a variation on that because it seems to sound fuller and with a better crash
I love everybody mentioned in this video, hahahah And for anyone interested in having this sound on the set, the Zildjian 20" K Custom Flat Top Ride is VERY similar to the old Haynes cymbal. Just Great!
I had a similar late 1960's A. Zildjian Flat Ride - 18" - sounded very much like your Paiste... I eventually switched over to mostly K Zildjians, and ended up finding an 18" K Custom Flat Ride - out of the Zildjian Vault!! Very Tony Williams type dry stick darker sound (more similar sound to the Marcus Cymbal) ... It's now my fave cymbal for jazz/latin etc... Great Story / Roy's Legacy will Always carry on! ~~ Thanks Chick!! (I know this - but many perhaps do not - that you are actually quite a good drummer - as well as the best keyboardist on the planet!)....
The cymbals are the hardest thing to get right and the most important part of a jazz drummer's sound. I have great sounding cymbals but always think everything else I hear is better.
Godmanit now he has a signature cymbal... I really enjoyed that little history lesson Chick! You and your music inspired me a lot, and Roy has sure done the same - especially as a drummer. Thank you for sharing that story with us, and I hope that one maybe I'll pick up one of these "Chick Corea Signature Royalty Rides" and keep the legacy going. Would probably be out of my budget for while though :P (but I guess after they come out they won't really go anywhere). P.S. I hope you get to Israel after the Corona Fiasco ends, I always wanted to hear you live! Have a nice day~
PAISTE Formula 602 Flatride 18" or 20" ROy Haynes original flatride cymbal 1968. Paiste make the first flatride cymbal of the history for Joe Morello and second place for Roy Haynes.
Love this!! Now I’m gonna have to listen back-to-back to these albums and keep my ears open for that ride. It sure sounds lovely! Are there any videos of Chick playing drums out there?? I bet he’s got awesome time!
I have an older 22" Zildjian K flat ride cymbal very similar to that one that Roy Haynes signed..have no idea of what particular model it is no markings at all on it other than the Zildjian K imprint pressed into the metal. It is a monster weighs a ton. Has very clean clear crystalline stick definition perfect for faster cymbal patterns through quieter passages..doesn't build up a 'wash' that overpowers the other instruments. Didn't know you're a drummer too Chick. Lot of history there in those cymbals.
thomas moje I got lucky five years ago and picked up an old K flat ride like yours I think that is about as close as we are gonna get to that cymbal chick got
Roy Haynes played a lot on this Zildjian flat-top ride. No cup. That gives it this peculiar sound tight and crystalline. Inconvenience, it's not crashable. Very interesting ride for the clubs where you can't play loud, or for studio work. Flat rides are part of the Pat Metheny sound, but I think Paul Wertico played on Paiste cymbals.
Well Chick, I love your playing and writing. (always have) Roy's drumming has always been a big deal to me. If Sabian are going to produce that ride and call it the 'Chick Corea' series, then Yamaha should come out with a Fender Rhodes copy that sounds just like yours did in the '60s and call it the 'Roy Hanes' signature model. Or maybe that would be too much?
I think the cymbal being named for Chick is because of how he's brought that cymbal through his whole career since he got it from Roy. Roy himself didn't necessarily use that cymbal so exclusively.
Now he sings has some of the most exciting drumming I've yet to hear. The first 2 jazz discs I truly listened to were now he sings and pat methenys bright size life with Bob Moses. Who could help but fall in love with both😉?
for those who are asking... I seem to remember in my readings that it is a 18" Paiste 602 flat ride. also, any chance there will be video released from the residency at NYC Blue Note from the 75 Bday celebration...? I'd love to see more from the Brian Blade sets !! (i was at the first one...) blessing of health and harmony!
He plays drums on his “Three Quartets” CD, a duet with the late saxophonist Michael Brecker, on the track “Confirmation”. Chick does a fine job on the skins.
@@hesrealclose1599 Sounds like he's playing Steve Gadd's drums on that tune. Of course, Gadd plays drums on the rest of the album, so Chick is maybe jamming (with Michael Brecker) until Gadd arrives.
Hi Chick, just want to say thank you for all those records you made (and will make) or I'd have nothing to listen too. Listening now to "Steps - What Was" I was surprised by the similarity the Roy Haynes drum solo and that of the playing of drummer Richard Wilson. I'm referring to a record recorded in 1970 www.discogs.com/Forrest-Westbrook-Jim-West-18-Paul-Ruhland-Dick-Wilson-This-Is-Their-Time-Oh-Yes/release/5441490 Richard was a great teacher to group of us LA drummers round the 80's & 90's. As a drummer yourself, I think you would enjoy Richard's playing, maybe there is some way I can get you the recording I have of this record? Many thanks again.
Hi. Very much enjoyed hearing about the cymbal. Do you know the story behind the relationship of Roy and the Ludwig Jazzette kit? Rumor has it that, back in the day, Bud Slingerland and Bill Ludwig both were trying to get Roy to endorse their respective brands and Roy needed a small kit that would fit into the sports car he was driving at the time...I think it was a Fiat Spider...and Slingerland came up with the "Jet" kit and Ludwig came up with the "Jazzette". The Jazzette was what he ended playing and endorsing. I'd sure love to get the story from the horse's mouth! Stay safe!

I still can't believe Chick is gone.
Yes, so sad.
There were about 400 of these made by Sabian. They came with a certificate of authenticity telling the story and hand signed by Chick. I picked up #24
RIP maestro. I'll never get over his passing.
Legendary!! Now He Sings Now He Sobs is one of my favorite records ever such a cool story to know that same cymbal has been passed around since then
Thank you for sharing. Back in the day i once went on tour with a minidisc player and one disk. Now He Sings Now He sobs. 2 weeks in a buss with that recording and life was never quite the same again.
Thank you Chick, Peace
The same cymbal on Light as a feather, and Now he sings, now he sobs--Wow! Mind blown. Amazing how often I’ve heard those records, and didn’t know
RIP ❤
whoa, a Paiste that sounds like an Istanbul K.
but then again, I had a Czechoslovakia-made cheapo machine stamped cymbal (I forgot the brand, they only had one at the time) that's pure magic.
Who is still watching Chick videos in 2024 and forgets hes gone?
THANK YOU Chick! What a wonderful way to tribute the great Ray Haynes!
So, so cool. If Roy is still able, watching them both tell old war stories in their Boston area accents here would be epic.
Jeffrey A. Smith hold on, there's another paht!
Thank you, Chick. You are such a great storyteller with great stories to tell and with great cymbals! Bless you and stay healthy! We all need you and love you!!!
I love Roys playing very much. Lately been listening to alot of Corea Holland Haynes Metheny Burton. I love Roys playing in that group... and in many others as well 👍
Thanks for that awesome video Chick! I had the privilege of watching Roy Haynes give a drum clinic in 1984. Wonderful drummer !

The other face of chick corea : the drumer , multiple talent.
Thank you for everything Chick! My life would be very different without your music inspiring me as a kid. Thank you for inspiring me to this day!
We need more of these videos.

Okay let me get this straight. That's the same ride on Now He Sings, Return To Forever, and Light As A Feather. Holy shit.
I saw Marcus play this cymbal with Chick at Ronnie Scott’s. I got to hear it and I got to touch it.
Marcus is an amazing drummer. Runs in the family!
This ride would sound amazing with the small bead tips I.e. Peter Erskine signature sticks. Sounds incredible, very musical.

And for anyone interested in having this sound on the set, the Zildjian 20" K Custom Flat Top Ride is VERY similar to the old Haynes cymbal. Just Great!
Very cool.
Wow thats sweet 👍
Incredible!
Really nice...
Flatride rulez! ❤️ I remember this cymbal appear back in the '15 online workshop. Love the snap and woody, clear response of a proper flat. : )
Maybe it's because Chick said the cymbal was from 1968, but I really felt like I could hear the sixties comin off that cymbal.
That is one historically significant cymbal- well, the artists who played it are, anyway.
I had a similar late 1960's A. Zildjian Flat Ride - 18" - sounded very much like your Paiste... Good content Chick, this format is very charming!! 😎
As soon as you hit that cymbal, I knew it was the one from "Now He Sings." Nice story!
Amazing chick! Love your channel!
Thanks 😇
I love this!! next time you have to play Chick!!!

Actually - Roy's old cymbal here IS a Paiste...
Can anyone confirm if this cymbal is a Paiste formula 602 flat ride? In the video, Chick says it's a Paiste cymbal
Looks like its a 602 porotype. My 18"looked nothing like Chicks.
it is an 18" pre-serial 602 flat.
I have the 16" crash but I use the k dark custom ride works well for I love cymbals like there children god bless the alchemist hammering away
Amazing 😍
