  • Here is another treasure from the CRATES, i.e., dusty boxes of Betamax videotapes (some unlabeled) that were recorded from television broadcasts when Beta was the video standard and VHS had not yet emerged as a competitor.
This was a PBS television broadcast of a December 4, 1982 jazz concert at the White House during Ronald Reagan's presidency. Later in the concert this trio is joined by Dizzy Gillespie & Jon Faddis on trumpet, Stan Getz on tenor saxophone, Diane Schur on vocals and Itzhak Perlman on violin. Watch it here: • 1982 DIZZY GILLESPIE, ...
In this clip we have Chick Corea on piano, Miroslav Vitous on bass and Roy Haynes on drums performing a seamless medley of three songs - a improvised segment followed by "Autumn Leaves" ( 2:20 ) and then Thelonious Monk's "Rhythm-a-ning" ( 6:35 ).
For this drummer's 85th birthday celebration in New York City in
2010 the world-famous Blue Note club had Chick Corea as the special Saturday night guest, i.e, 28 years after the video you're watching. Roy Haynes was as sprightly as ever, dapper, and still on top of his game in every way. LONG LIVE ROY HAYNES !
Now subtract 80 years from his vintage and check out this up-and-coming drummer: • a FIVE-YEAR-OLD jazz d...

Roy Haynes is starting to seem like Forrest Gump. Here he is with Chick and Miroslav in the 80s. Go back to the 60s and these he is at Newport with Coltrane playing My Favorite Things. Go back to the be-bop days and there he is with the be-boppers. Fast forward to the 2000s and here he is playing concerts and still killin it.

I got to hang a bit around Bob Mosses and he told me a story from his younger days he'd go to listen to a session in NYC where Roy Haynes and Buddy Rich would take turns on the same set. So while Rich was amazing Haynes was uncanny organic hip unexpected the future.

Wow!! Saw Roy in NYC when he was 82 and not only did he play great and had lots of energy...he was the life of the party!!!I went back stage and he was entertaining everyone with jokes and loud merrymaking. I think hes a cyborg from another planet. Not human.for sure. We should pay him ,much more homage.

Little did I know when I was listening to his beautiful music as a young man, playing it on my radio show Chick use to live right down the road from me. Could have met him and payed homage. Never thought the time would pass so quickly. Never thought we would lose him so soon. Far as I'm concerned 79 isn't squat. He should have stayed around. We need him. What a lovely man, genius musician.
