Wardrobe Declutter (for the second time in 2022!) | Closet Declutter Vlog

  • It's finally time for Part Two of my Wardrobe Declutter - and there will very likely be a part Three as there's still a lot to sort through! I find it so hard to let go of clothing, but bit by bit, they are leaving the building for new homes elsewhere.
    After putting this off for YEARS, I'm finally decluttering my wardrobe to make way for just the things I truly love. I've ended up in a situation where I genuinely have tons of clothes and nothing to wear! Something needed to change. So I'm starting the process of a wardrobe declutter (closet declutter or closet cleanout as you might refer to it overseas), and over the next year or so will work to develop a wardrobe that truly fits the person I am today, rather than the person I was over a decade ago, who led a very different life.
    WATCH PART ONE HERE:
    • Wardrobe Declutter - P...
    Over the last few years, I've come to the realisation that whilst a certain level of material things do add to your life, more stuff will not necessarily make you happier. This realisation hit me when I looked around my home that was filled with stuff (so much so I felt I needed a bigger house) and couldn't say I was particularly happier than when I lived in Spain (in 2008) when everything I had with me fit in one large drawer and a very small wardrobe.
    These days I prefer to adopt a buy less, buy better approach, with a focus on quality over quantity, removing the clutter, adopting aspects of minimalism, and utilising my money in the best way possible.

    So sorry I've been gone for so long, I thought about doing a video update, and then realised that was really narcissistic and decided to just update you in a comment instead lol! Basically, I decided to take a week to 10 days off for my birthday and then intended to be back - but then had gas works going on on my street and at my house, which involved workmen being in and out of my property everyday for 3 weeks (which drove me slightly insane!) In and amongst all that, without going into details, my job is no more and I have no idea what to do next. I haven't loved the industry I was in for some time so on the one had its a great opportunity to consider a new direction, but at the same time lack of income is troubling for anyone (thankfully the emergency fund I'm always talking about will be incredibly useful now) - so my greatest apologies, it's been too long, but hopefully it should be back to regular uploads, especially now I have a little more time on my hands. KK xx

    So since I filmed this yesterday I also sent the green floral dress and the jumpsuit to the sell pile, the jodhpurs have gone into storage short term (if I don't go riding again in the coming months they will have to go along with my riding boots), I also pulled out a few more bits of workout wear to go. Went through my hat box off camera and let go of a few bits of millinery too. Have also added a few more tops to the maybe pile that I'm certain will go in the next declutter as they are a little on the small side. I really do find that this decluttering malarkey is like a muscle - it feels so hard to let go, but then you reflect overnight and realise you just wont wear them, and it becomes easier to let go.

    I find these videos so inspiring and motivating! I save old jeans to use a patching for other things (dog beds, blankets, random lining rips in coats etc) and jeans; my partner tends to destroy the back bottom hem of his jeans so I will fix those with the old jeans. And, I’ve re-hemmed second-hand shop jeans to the right length using old jeans.

    I am in the process of doing the same. I learned a couple of things that have worked for me. First, I made a list of categories and counted the number of items I own in each category. I was shocked by the numbers. I set goal for each category. I also switch out seasonally and turn all the hangers around backwards. When I wear an item and turn the hanger back the regular way. Close to the end of the season, the items that were not worn, I force myself to wear the item and see how I feel. If I don't feel great, I let it go. Don't hang on to things that don't look good on you or you haven't worn because it is no longer your style or you don't have the right thing to wear with it. We all have plenty of things in our wardrobe that we love without keeping these things. You can do it!

    • @KirstyKirby
      @KirstyKirby  Год назад

      Hi Lisa, I know the hanger method, it’s a very common decluttering tip, but I don’t rate it myself for a few reasons. Your idea of categories is interesting but having a set amount of things in each category isn’t something I’m aiming for, a capsule wardrobe or a set amount of clothing isn’t a goal of mine.
      I’m not sure if you’ve seen my videos before but I’m not holding on to things particularly - I prefer to slowly declutter and that way I experience no regret. I thought I explained that in this video, but it seems like I must not have worded it well. Some items I move to a maybe for a while, and then decide over time. This works best for me, but I appreciate you may prefer a more in one fell swoop Kon Mari approach. That’s not for me.
      Not sure if I said something in the video to inadvertently suggest I was keeping things that ‘look bad’ on me, sorry if I did as that’s certainly not the case, those things have left long ago with no problem. I don’t keep things that make me feel bad about myself either, I explained in the video that I wasn’t keeping that sort of thing. Not sure if that was directed at me or just general tips for anyone decluttering.
      Thanks for sharing your experience though, pleased the tips you shared worked for you and I’m sure others in the comments will appreciate them.

    Great video Kirsty - thank you. It's great to see you slimming down your wardrobe and explaining why you're getting rid of certain pieces - really helpful as I can relate!! Have you thought about finding out more about your colours? (Colour theory!?) I noticed you have all sorts of colours in your wardrobe - some of which look so much more stunning with your hair/skin/eye colour than others. If you're still wanting to reduce and fine tune your wardrobe I really think identifying your best colours and slowly working towards creating your own personal colour palette would really help. I'm not a colour expert at all but you look to me like a 'Bright winter' that would best suit clear, cool and bright colours - fuschia pink, periwinkle blue, bright apple green etc. I've done this recently myself and it has helped enormously! It really helps you to let go of clothes that really just don't suit you or make you look your best.. and then also it helps you to end up with a wardrobe where everything goes together as all your items compliment eachother as they're from a harmonious colour palette. Search online for colour theory and colour 'season,' I think you'll find it really interesting and really helpful. X X

    • @KirstyKirby
      @KirstyKirby  Год назад +2

      Hi yes I’ve had my colours done years ago, I don’t always stick to it though but I know people find it helpful in clearing their cupboards. Even if it suited me, fuschia pink and apple green wouldn’t be something I’d wear - really not my cup of tea I’m afraid! (Although I did wear a fair bit of hot pink in my younger days) Really pleased to hear colour theory helped you though. I use it loosely but you’re not a million miles away - navy’s, deep reds, emerald greens, look good yet tans or nudes (which I think look so classic and timeless) can look truly awful and wash me out. Much of my clothing is a decade old too (hence why there’s so much) so different colours played into my life at the time, you’re not so bothered by colour analysis at 22. 😉 Also oddly when I tan my colouring seems to start to pull warm! Xx
      Edited to add - whilst I’m not following colour analysis, with any new purchases I am sort of sticking with a smaller set of colours in mind, as it just makes life a bit easier when putting outfits together.

At the end of six months all you need to do is look at the hangers that are backwards to know what to get rid of. Also help doing that to an entire wardrobe to easily identify what you wear most often.

      Hi there, it really depends on the garment. If it’s high street/fast fashion I tend to use things like local selling pages, or even local selling groups on Facebook as they don’t attract a lot of money anyway. For branded or premium high street I tend to still use eBay. I’ve tried Depop and similar in the past but found them pretty hit and miss with lots of ‘will you accept x’ messages when items are already silly prices.
      I have noticed though that a lot of things sell for almost nothing, which is really disappointing, it used to be much better years ago. I’m trying to just not over-consume these days so that I don’t need to sell things in the future. Hope that helps.

There might be some ASMR videos that do that type of thing if its what you are into, perhaps a search on here might bring something like that up for you - sorry I don't think its something I'd going to necessarily going to feature.

      It is concerning especially with the cost of basics rocketing. Hopefully things will work out for the best.
      The worst thing about them digging up a large part of my garden was they did it without permission when I went out to help them save time - they wanted to put next doors line through my lawn and drive so they could put the main line in quicker. I made them remove it as would never have agreed to it as you become liable for any damage to the pipe (£800 charge if you damage it with a spade or something, no way), so I have a destroyed lawn and a driveway with incorrect block-work that had zero benefits for me. Some of the chaps were lovely fellas (not the ones who dug up the lawn and then lied to my face) but it’s still incredibly intrusive to have it going on for weeks, especially when it wasn’t something I’d planned for like a kitchen remodel, they just turn up and want access.

Never been topsoil, was just some of the crap they dug up, full of sand grit and random bits of glass. How on earth is that going to help? The turf had just been chucked in the hole and the earth thrown on top 🙄 The driveway has ended up with bricks that aren’t aligned and they used several bricks from my back garden that don’t match. It’s made me be much more mindful in making sure I’m buying items that I will get cost per wear out of so that if I do donate in the end, I feel like I’ve had the value and happy for someone else to have it with no need to recoup any of my original spend.

    Why do you talk about age so much? You’re very young. I’m 55 and love wearing whatever I like. The more details the better. 😂 Of course it is a question of style and preference. What I don’t allow myself is to evaluate clothes in the light of age. Wear what you feel happy in. The dress with bow is lovely 🎀

      I do wear what I want 😊 I’m really just referring to things I wore when I was younger that I wouldn’t want to wear now for various reasons. It’s definitely more a preference than a belief that women of a certain age should dress a certain way. The dress with the bow very sadly won’t go anywhere near me anymore 😂 and as I have elevated oestrogen and Hashimotos I think it’s unlikely it will again 🤦‍♀️

    • @KirstyKirby
      @KirstyKirby  Год назад +1

      If I ever talk about age in relation to clothing, I'm not making any reference to what others should do in any way shape of form. Often I really mean I've just outgrown it in this stage of my life for whatever reason, and I think of it as myself getting older. A lot of the clothing I am letting go of isn't due to some preconceived idea of what I should wear at a particular age, but that I no longer like nor feel comfortable in it. I think I spoke in this video about being comfortable with the changes my body has gone through as I've aged and therefore feel better in certain clothing than others. Cartoon Characters isn't for me but if you love it and feel happy in them then I say go for it!
