    I think the freeze dryer problem stems from the fact it is located in the grow room. There is a ton of moisture in there, plus all the bacteria in the soil. You probably want to move the freeze dryer into the pantry room in the house.

However, when it started to get cold I took out the window units and all of a sudden I found myself with a mold problem because of a lack of air circulation. Sometimes you don't know until you know! Watching this definitely made me feel better.

      @TamingTheWild12 Год назад +14

      Depends on what you are doing in it. I was told by rep (because I thought same thing save machine and let it just air dry) but the defrost setting actually helps get the "stuff" out of the machine that can grow. Some people just air dry and wipe down but really needs to flush too! Light things like candy probably aren't too bad to just air dry and clean but things like meat, eggs & dairy should probably have defrost run to make sure its getting cleaned out well then cleaned again with vinegar or alcohol. Just sharing what I was told.

    Handy tip: when cleaning mould use the 3 bucket system.
    1 bucket for the cleaning agent. The 2nd bucket for the initial rinsing of the cloth. And the 3rd bucket to rinse the cleaning cloth again before you dip it back into the 1st cleaning agent bucket.
    And throw away the cloths that were used to clean with. Do not wash them. You only end up spreading the mould spores to your washing machine.
    Also if you are using vinegar, add a few drops of Oil of Clove. It helps to stop the regrowth of mould spores.

    Becky,
    After having my FD for over 4 years now and having done anything you can think of doing in it and having to deal with a lot of explosions of milk and other sugary substances, I made it a habit to clean my FD every time after I do raw meat, eggs or fish in it using the soapy water and then rinsing it out with fresh water. Also, I bought the long flexible brush for the plastic draining tube and clean it every now and then as necessary. I opted not to use vinegar and pouring it down the drainage tube because eventually it will corrode the shut-off valve, and it is a pain to replace. Ask me how I know... If I use vinegar... on a very rear occasion... I immediately pour a lot of fresh water down that tube. Just a few tips from "being there, done that" prospective.
    You want to do some light wiping every time after the defrost cycle since some food pieces can drop to the bottom and then get some melted water on them... and you don't want any contamination in your food. I have a friend who now works as a tech rep for Harvest Right, he cleans his unit every single time after each use.
    I am glad you showed the disaster inside, because all of us have to deal with some "real life" gross cleaning. You took it like a champ! ❤

    Hi Becky, from what I've learned over the past 2 years, vinegar is NOT the preferred method for cleaning as it is acidic. Most people tend to use vodka or some type of high proof alcohol. Oh, I guess you do mention that afterwards. Also, some people buy a drain cleaning brush to help clean the drain hose. And it's definitely a good idea to wipe out your machine, especially when changing from something like raw eggs or meat to vegetables and fruit. Hope this helps! Happy freeze drying!

I notice you do this when cooking dinners, which you really should also wait till it comes up to temperature. You are correct about choosing a large freeze dryer...my husband said,"honey I know you, and more is what you always do, get the large, you won't regret it "! He was right. It has been running since we bought it last August. I have put last years harvests away, and emptied an extra large chest freezer as well. Whenever I catch good deals on fruits and vegetables, I stock up with the freeze drying. It has saved us so much money and we have no food waste. I even put complete meals in it, so come gardening season, we will have scratch cooked meals, when I am too busy or tired to cook.

    I store my peppers in smaller portions so when I open up a bag I tend to use the entire bag per recipe. This way my peppers stay perfectly vacuumed and sealed until ready to use.

    Yep, a nasty mess just like I thought. I’m in the Deep South so I live in humidity almost constantly. We’re having plumbing issues so our dryer is on the back porch. Just like our washing machine, we’ll have to leave the door open longer than most. Thank you for posting this. I’m 100% sure I would have closed it. (Probably still will with my memory..lol) thanks for the reupload Becky! ❤

    For resealing - when I seal my bags, I leave some extra room (so the bag is a little too long) then I cut along the sealed edge and then there is plenty of room to just re-seal it. And I feel you with the mold - I HATE mold! And it really grosses me out, too and makes me sick if I smell it. Seems we all deal with it occasionally though. In fact, right now I am getting ready to clean one of our window frames that had a leak during our recent rains. 🤢

It definitely extend the growing season (both spring and autumn) but controlling the temperature during seed starting season would be extremely challenging. That’s my two cents anyway 😉
