- If you are having where your Fan will not stop running after the key is out or Over heating problems and have checked the fuse box fan relay, and fuses, and possibly even checked the fan to see if it works with straight power. Then this Video is for you. There is a relay that is off in another part of the engine bay that needs to be replaced. Find out where.

Wow! My husband and I just bought a used Jeep. My husband kept smelling the radiator. I RUclips how to check overheating. I found your video, I had my husband watch your video bc he did not want to believe me on the relay switch. You are a life saver, thank you for putting this great video together!
On point!😊🙏🙏🙏
You so welcome.
@@wjkris0410 We also put in a new radiator from Mishimoto (badass)! We are loving out Jeep! Ridgway, Colorado!
Dude! I have been looking for months on how to fix this issue (My cooling fan wont shut off) talk to multiple mechanics, did multiple google searches, replaced the cooling fan (twice), replaced coolant temp sensor, took the jeep into the shop and still couldn't find the answer! Thank you very much my friend! I am going to order this part! I'll keep you posted. Thank you for doing this video! You win the internet! (2010 Jeep Wrangler)
You are welcome. I was in the same boat I new that there had to be a relay some where else and I ordered a service manual that still did not tell me where the relay was but I found it after 2weeks of chasing wires.
My cooling fan is loud af!
So did it fix your fan problem? Because mine is constantly blowing loud while I drive
@@danielcarter8734 Yes! It fixed it! I suggest trying it.
@@danielcarter8734 same mine kicks on right away & never goes off until about 5 seconds after I shut my 2012 jku off. That last part about shutting off may be normal but I know it shouldn’t run constantly. Also occasionally over heats & coolant constantly vanishing from the reservoir! So maybe also air in the line??? But still I can’t pinpoint the issue & can’t afford to have mechanics guess i just want to pinpoint problem & fix it myself. Any suggestions? Praying it’s not head gasket because I don’t see or smell a leak but…
I wish I would have googled this earlier today before I used the process of elimination. Thanks for sharing this.
Your welcome
Thanks for the video. My fan works, but tries to over heat then goes back to normal. Could a bad relay switch cause this?
Thanks man I’m going to try this tomorrow, I did basically everything you did. Fingers crossed this does it
I hope it helps you out. And that that is the problem let me know if it fixes it. 👍
KLR motive yes thank you man! Paid $30 for the new relay at the dealer and the fan kicked on after I put it in
Awesome I am glad it helped you out.
@wjkris8465 cool video.
So I have a 2016 jeep wrangler sport and my mechanic let me know that my fan is working overtime and it's been over heating. Don't wanna pay an arm and a leg at my local jeep dealership. Please help.
Thank you for going through all the items you trouble shot and changed. Extremly helpful -- Can I ask how you found each of these issues? Thanks again!
I used a multimeter and also a power probe. I hot wired the fan to just come on with the ignition switch to make it till i found the issue.
All fans have a temperature relay, had to replace mine on my 09 4 years ago. It actually got to where the fan would come on and not shut off.
Ya It did that as well before goin out. So I knew it had to have one but I just could not find anything on it. Till I came across it in a forum. It’s in such a weird place too.
@@wjkris0410 to be honest I bought the part first so I knew what I was looking for
That’s good to hear
The fan I just swapped out since it was under warranty I cut the other ones wires up to get home from the trail and the temp sensor was just to make sure the plastic one wasn’t bad.
Goodday. I m having issues with my 2013 3.6. First radiator was leaking. Replaced it with Mopar radiator. Burped the system after fitting radiator. Gauge rises above mid point fans kick full speed noisy and Gauge fluctuations. Replaced thermostat and waterpump Mopar. And temperature sensor on cylinder head. Still doing same thing fan runs non stop and Gauge fluctuations. Swoped radiator fan with another buddy on mine jk. Same thing still. Cylinder head leakage test done still the same and it's good. I need help
thanks for this informative video... on my 2015 JK the relay is in the TPIM. found this out the through the dealer
Good to know they moved it!
@@wjkris0410 in my case i had to replace the radiator fan assembly!!!
I had a clogged up radiator from not cleaning it out good enough from wheelin.
After being out on trails, i was running hot. Thought it was my fan so I replaced it and cleaned out the radiator.
Well it was staying cool but still steaming.
Come to find out my radiator was leaking so i replaced it.
Got it all back together and drove it a bit. No leaks but running hot again. The new fan is not kicking on.
Checked the fuse, switched around all the relays like you did, and nothing.
The fan does briefly kick on when i turn on the A/C then cuts off and repeats this process.
I am hoping replacing this relay takes care of the fan issue.
I hope so too
Did that fix it?
Did you figure this out? Mines only going to high speed for a few seconds when the compressor kicks on. It overheats when driving
So was the fan not coming in at all? Or just low speed? My Jeep is getting hot running at 3/4 on the gauge when driving past 55mph… or hitting a hill.. but cools off after I slow down. Replaced water pump temp sensor radiator cap flushed radiator and thermostat… can’t figure this out
The fan would not come on at all on this one. It seems like you don’t have enough air flow to the radiator. Do you have a winch or lights in front of your grill?
@@wjkris0410 I have a aftermarket grill... I just put the stock grill back on and only got hot very little, barely past the halfway mark. But that don't make sense to me either because tons of people have a aftermarket grill. I don't know if the fan isn't kicking in high gear or what it could be. I drove with no grill and it never got hot...
So I would look between your radiator and the condenser to make sure there isn’t any leaves or mud stuck between there. And if not go to the local car wash and pressure wash the condenser and radiator out to get it clean.
It sounds like you are having an airflow problem.
Turn your ac on max fan and max cold the fan should come on instantly and then you could feel the air being pulled and pushed thru
@@wjkris0410 I have pressured washed it, and blew it out with air but haven't looked in between them. The fan came on when I turned on the a/c... I mainly use it at the beach..hardly ever in the mud. So figured maybe there's sand somewhere. It's got me stumped. Runs fine with no grill...but I'm not rolling around with no grill lol
I think I might have that problem . My fan doesn't spin but I do have heat blowing from the right side and cold air from the left side. I'm certainly don't know what it is bit I'll try the fan relay tho . Thanks for sharing.
Your welcome
Did the fan run high before it went out. Mines is running high making my temperature run crazy.
The relay on mine had corrosion in it and it would make the fan stay on high a lot plus the fan would stay on while the engine was not running.
Thank you my friend
Thanks, that helped a lot.. Do a tutorial on how you put in that winch. 🤙
Unfortunately I do not have that Jeep around any more but I will be doing one soon on my WJ with a DIY bumpers and skids soon
@@wjkris0410 sounds good brother, that speed sensor was a pain in the butt to get too but it solved the problem. Thanks again.👍
Thanks for making this video! Life saver!
No problem I looked for 2 days and couldn’t find a video so I just made one to help others out.
I have a 2011. The fan works when I run the AC in defrost, but does not run at regular heat. So in essence, it works with the AC compressor but not with the regular heater. Do you think this would fix that as well? It’s about the only thing I haven’t tried yet.
It's not supposed to run when you have just the heater on unless the engine is getting hot. The A/C come on with your defroster to help dry the air so it will unfog your windshield better and it also keeps the A/C compressor from seizing up if it goes all winter without being used and the fan runs because the A/C is on and it needs to pull air through the condenser all of time for the A/C to work properly
Kris, thank you for your video. Unfortunately, I had to learn all that the hard way out on the trail without the benefit of seeing your video first. I have a 2009 JKU. My problem was that the high speed wouldn't come on when I was doing a slow uphill crawl in hot weather, and I would overheat badly--240 degrees plus. I was able to find a Novato RL44 relay at an O'Reily's in a town that was close by. It had a 30 amp rating. That got me home, and when I got back, I got the OEM part from a local jeep dealer, and it has blown again. (Do you know what the amp rating is on the OEM part? I googled the part number you gave us, and it doesn't say.) Any idea why this particular relay tends to fail so much? I've never had to replace a single other relay in this 11 year old vehicle. I'm wondering if it has anything to do with the fact that Jeep didn't seal the radiator fan motor and dust, water or mud gets in the windings? Any thoughts?
Sorry for the late response but I have noticed that the fans are not sealed very well and they seam to not like the water much. My wife’s first fan incident was the oem fan got wet then later on the relay went out. I wonder if the after market fan has a lot amp draw and that is while yours keep going out. Might see if you can find a really good Bosch relay that is similar. Heat is not that good for them either.
The problem is Made in China, find an Made in USA, just my too cents
Thanks. What would you think about sealing the new relay with silicon to keep water out?
I would just use dielectric grease
I was told by a technician at Firestone that I needed to change my radiator fan… was your temperature showing overheating even with the fan on?
No the fan just stopped working
So when the electric fan is not working does it also effect the a/c? The other day it was 100 degrees and my air condition stopped blow cold air...then I noticed my temperature gauge almost overheating that's when I discovered my fan not kicking on...I tried moving the fan by hand just to see if the dings would spin but it moves about an inch and that's it...
Thinking I need a new electric fan? But maybe I should check this relay out
I would check the relay first then buy the fan if it isn’t fixed
Thank you!
Great Video. Very helpful. Thank you
Your welcome
I’m glad I could help
I’m trying this tomorrow
How did this work out for you!
Did it work for you?
This might be the problem with my 08. It's been like this for almost 2 years and never found out a solution. Sometimes it works but I know when it stops because my a/c would not be blowing cold no more and the engine light would come on which is the fan 2 control circuit. I'm going to give this a shot and hopefully see if this is the problem.
I hope this helps you out
@@wjkris0410 I tried and unfortunately it didn't work. I also swapped around some relays fuses but sadly that didn't work either. My only last option is there is a short somewhere in the harness.
Sry to hear that.
Thanks for the video 😮😮😮😮
Welcome
Where can I buy the relay!!??
No company has any in stock. Jeep dealership said it would take several months or more to get it if they CAN even get one!b
Amazon
It’s in the description and I show the part number in the video
Thanks
Hello Kris, so my daughter has a 2014 jeep wrangler and the radiator fan stays on constantly and we have replaced the thermostat and now I am going to change the temp sensor. Do you think by changing the temp sensor it will cause the fan to not stay on constantly????
I’m not positive on that but if it isn’t over heating I would not worry much about it.
Sorry for the late response.
What was the problem? my 2015 is doing the same
hello that winch looks' super nice with original bumper di you make it can you make a video showing more details that winch
I no longer have that Jeep but I am more then happy to try and find a friend that would let me try that out.
Great video...got right to the problem..not your life story first...lol
Glad you enjoyed it
I’m having a hard time finding the part. No one seems to know what I’m talking about. Can you tell me where you ordered and what to ask for? tia

KLR motive Thank you so much!!
No problem 👍
I have a 2010 2 door and my fan won’t shut off and it drained my battery once already. Gonna give this a shot. Was it a pain in the ass to get to the relay and remove it?
Ya it should fix it. Ours did the same thing. But I pulled the relay in the fuse box. To make it stop.
It’s in a tight spot if you use a drill and a long torx bit it made things easier for me.
Did this fix your issue
KLR motive still waiting on the part to come in
Super late on this but yes this fixed my issue !
Good to hear man
2015 Jeep Wrangler Sahara, Temperature gage seems to be operating just fine. But fans kick on and are really loud. Thermostat is new radiator has been replaced and temperature gauge does not go above normal operating temp. Not sure what to do, thinking it might be this relay?
The fans are just loud that’s how they pull air thru the radiator.
@@wjkris0410 definitely not normal. Had it since it was brand new, I think my thermostat is sticking. My radiator cap does not get hot after driving for 30-45 min. Top radiator hose is hot bottom is cold. Think I may have gotten a bad thermostat
That is strange the top hose has the thermostat in it. Your radiator could be air lock. Which means that it has a big air pocket in the radiator and will not flow fluid. Run a water hose thru the radiator. With hoses off.
Great video! But I got one question. What if the fan doesn't turn on when the ac is off? I have changed my radiator, electric fan, thermostat, temp sensor and about to change the water pump. It still over heats but I'm going to try the relay next!
Good question
But the fan system is set up to come on automatically when the max ac switch is on.
@@wjkris0410 gotcha thanks!
@@willielopez2112 do you fix your problem I have the same problem and I replace the same parts exactly like you still heating
Any update on this ?? I changed my thermostat , sensor , and water pump .. fan still going crazy loud
Did you have power by the fan before you bought the relay
No I didn’t
The reason I bought the new fan was because I cut the wires to where it would come on when the Ignition was on.
Thanks. It's the same problem I have
Glad it helped
Im going to try this on my 07 jk as it’s overheating on me off-roading uphill, my fan seems to turn on but turning very slow
Sounds good 👌
I wish you showed how to actually take out the old relay and put in the new one!! I have no idea how to!!
I did if you watch the entire video
@@wjkris0410the angle wasn’t the best showing the people how tho
I changed the fan relay and the temperature sensor and the fan wasn't loud anymore
Do you know the part number for the relay!??
The part number is in the description below the video. Thanks for watching!
Where are the location of that relay on jeep wrangler 2016, isn't in that area. Maybe are relocation to other location. Thanks.
I’m not sure I have not got thru the bay of one that is newer but I could do some searching
if you wired the fan up directly and it worked, why would you replace the fan?
Because I stripped wires out of the connector to hot wire it.
So I have replaced the high speed relay and thermostat and I'm not over full but at about 10 minutes of operation in my holding tank is boiling excessively letting out a lot of steam any ideas
that might be a head gasket issue bud
@wjkris0410 it turned out the temp gage going into the water pump was bad blew my radiator so new radiator and water pump still having issues replaced that temp sensor no more issues
@@helo177good deal
My 2011 Jeep wrangler has a leak in the radiator and started running hot but fan won’t turn on unless I turn the truck off and then off and it kicks on and cools it down but then starts overheating again like 10 min later
Try this relay I had the fan kick on and stay on while the Jeep was off too
@@wjkris0410sorry I meant it only turns on if I start running hot I shut it off and then on and the fan will kick on until it gets to the right temp
It could be that relay
when you replaced the temp sensor, did it go all the way in, I replaced mine it only went in half way.
It’s a pipe thread so as long as water isn’t coming out of the threaded area you should be good.
@@wjkris0410 nothing is leaking, just was a little worried, thanks
Good deal. I’m glad to help.
I can’t find that part number do you have a link?
Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram Radiator Fan Relay New Mopar OEM a.co/d/caz0UVB
Very good
Thanks
What’s the name /code of the relay?
There is a link in the description below the video
How the heck do you get to the screw??
I think I used a long screwdriver
The fan is only staying on when the vehicle is running. It dose turn off when the vehicle is off.
From everything that I have seen on vehicles the fans have always stayed on while running so they stay cool the do have a high and low setting tho. The fan will stay on low while it is cool and as the temps rise the fan gos to high. The fans ask so run on high when the a/c in on in the cab. I hope this helps.
Hooking up your fan motor directly to the battery with clips to check the motor would have told you it didn't need replacing.
When I was on the trail at the time we didn’t have anything to go into the plug to check and I ended up cutting the wires so it would work to get home.
It’s funny how you said “they don’t tell you“ all fans have relays so if you don’t know that maybe it’s you not them. Or you could’ve simply hooked your fan to 12 V to see if it worked that would’ve save you probably to 300 bucks on a moped or Mopar fan and your temperature sensor wasn’t working you wouldn’t have a temperature reading on your dashboard so that’s pretty easy to diagnose that that’s not the problem and if you’re going to just throw parts at something that’s not working start with the cheap parts first like a relay if you look up any wiring schematic it will show you the relay but like I said everything that garage any kind of power on a vehicle has a relay know things wired directly to any switch switch always control, relay, relay powers whatever you’re using your palm fan whatever
First off thanks for taking the time to waste your time and tell me I did everything wrong 👍
The fan I did hook up straight to power. It didn’t work. Then the fan I got new still didn’t work hooked up correctly. So I cut the wires to hot wire the new fan to make the trip home and through the week till I traced down the problem. 99% of the relays to the vehicle are in the control box on newer vehicles it even stated in the wire diagram from mopar that it is controlled by the box. Then as I went through all the relays in the book from mopar I found no wire diagram but only a picture of the relay that controls the fan between the control fuse box and the fan resistor. So as for the temp sensor it was the cheapest thing to replace but didn’t fix it.
So they don’t tell you where the relay is located in the mopar book either. Thanks I hope you learned something from the video and if not next time hit the next button. Have a nice day!
I am having a problem reading the box can you get me a a part number and a name that will work online?

I have the same problem on my 2008 jeep liberty. Do you know if we have this relay as well? if yes, where would it be? Thanks
Sorry for the late response but I have not seen the wiring for a liberty but I will say that they most likely will have another relay in the wiring harness and you will just have to get in there and follow the wires the best you can.
What’s the part called
It’s in the video
And in the description
Found it (a bit) easier if you remove the headlight.
That’s good to know. I would have had to disconnect the winch, to remove the grill, then remove the head light to get to it on this Jeep.
@@wjkris0410 yeah, that would be a pain!
@@wjkris0410 I had the same issue with removing a winch/grill/then headlight. You can remove the headlight with the grill in place. My 2007 jk has small cutouts where each torx screw is that holds the headlight ring in place.
Interesting that the 2.8ltr diesel has 2 fans a belt driven fan and an electric fan. I guess we have more to cool.

I wish he said what he replaced.
What are you looking that wasn’t said?
I have a 2011. The fan works when I run the AC in defrost, but does not run at regular heat. So in essence, it works with the AC compressor but not with the regular heater. Do you think this would fix that as well? It’s about the only thing I haven’t tried yet.
