Thanks Dr. Majid. The main difference lies in the pathophysiolpgy of the two. Spasm and cramps both are involuntary contractions but the causative factor vary. Cramps have multiple reasons including electrolyte imbalance, dehydration, environmental factors etc. whereas spasm is body’s adaptive response to prevent further injury to a body part.

3 Types of contractions :- Isometric contraction :- the length of the muscle remains the same but tone increases. Isotonic contraction : the length of the muscle changes but the tone remains the same. Isotonic contraction is of 2 types:- 1. Concentric : muscle becoming shorter. 2. Eccentric : muscle getting elongated. Isokinetic contraction : Kinetic means movement. Iso means same. Thus, movement occurs at the SAME VELOCITY.
