Ori was the last single player game my brother beat before he passed away so anything associated will always have a special place in my heart. It’s a bittersweet game in itself.
I think Diablo 1' gameplay rythm (especially for first playtrough) feel more like a souls game than a modern ARPG. You should be careful about positioning, pick your fights, you are strong but fragile and that environment doesnt want you in there. New norm of ARPG s feels more like we are trying to go Vampire Survivors closest way possible with builds to more efficient farming than roleplay with action elements. We are here for loot and environment is just a prize pool for us to beat. No Rest for the Wicked kinda brought me back to that feeling, you are a physical character rather than a walking dps machine.
Massive champions of norrath enjoyer here. No rest for the wicked seems to be one of the few modern isometrics Arpgs that will come close to the level of combat and character/enemy interaction champions can have. It seems to go towards souls combat and stats more than champions, but as long as we get meaningful enemy encounters(not only bosses) and good enough balance(player damage, enemy damage, player healing, etc) so the nuances of the combat system matter, it will be great. It is great that the game is on consoles as well. Out off all the future arpgs releases for console, this one has the most potential.
The camera work on the boss shown around 5:30 is fantastic. It kept the boss & your character in clear vision with minimal camera movement, very very cinematic.
This is the ARPG I'm most excited about! Seems they want that old school player experience, where you evolve and gear up more gradually and resources are more reserved. One game I always wished devs looked to for a base ARPG concept mold is Brume, by Sokpop, which actually feels like the tamagotchi version of NRFTW! So we're on the right track!
I'm really excited for this one. There's a lot of ambitious ideas at play with Wicked, and that the devs openly state their disappointment with the current state of ARPG's only fuels my hype.
It's awesome that the early access launch is so soon. They are really leveraging the hand crafted levels to maximum effect to set it apart from the procedural generation of the other games in this genre.
I feel like souls fights are primarily about learning the fights rather than leveling or gearing up. You are encouraged to learn how to fight the boss even if it's not clear/obvious how to fight them on a first play-through. That's why leveling/grinding feels ineffective. If you're struggling, grinding does not help that much. However, something that's great about souls games is that you can also win fights low level and low geared if you understand the boss well enough. That being said, I'm not totally against level/gear dependence but I wouldn't call Souls bosses impossible or even exceptionally hard. They are just a bit level/gear independent and their difficulty is more dependent on how well you understand the fight.
I totally get what you're saying, but there seems to me to be a bizarre reluctance to incorporate difficulty settings (present in virtually every other game genre) into Souls-like games. It's like, if you want the game to be challenging and rewarding, that's great. But what is challenging to you as the dev or a 10hr/day blaster is radically different than what is difficult to me as someone who works 60hrs/wk and barely finds 30mins Sunday evening to throw on a game. And i've heard "then this game isn't for you" and all variations of that, but why can't it be? Just have easy medium hard or something, I can't believe that would take a huge development effort. Be like Doom if you want, call easy 'whining baby mode' or something to make yourself feel good about playing hard, but just add it for goodness sakes.
I didn't play any Souls-like games (but had seen videos) and didn't even realize it, but I think when I saw D4 original trailers that's what I was hoping for too
This game is really the game I’ve been wanting to make. It has elements that are missing from games like Diablo. Hidden rooms of treasure and stuff like that there should be so many secrete passages and stuff that you can find that you didn’t find before and really should be whole new sections of the map that are opened just from secrete passages. Also I love they added some climbing it kind of drives me crazy when games don’t have jump or climbing because that takes away from depth and Emersion. Just adding jump now you can add more obstacles to add to gameplay and challenges
I'm curious to see how non-melee classes would fare in combat. The combat does seem Souls-like, which is a breath of fresh air, but I wonder if it will lend itself to a narrow playstyle where rolling and punishing attacks are the main strat.
Can someone explain what the "souls-like" that Llama references a lot in this video is exactly? Havent played those games and Im curious as to what exactly it entails as a "genre"
A "souls-like" game is a term used to describe video games that are heavily inspired by the mechanics and gameplay style of the "Souls" series developed by FromSoftware, particularly the "Dark Souls" games. These games are characterized by challenging difficulty, intricate level design, methodical combat, and a strong emphasis on player skill and exploration. Key features of souls-like games often include: Challenging Combat: Combat is usually punishing and requires precise timing, strategic positioning, and mastery of various weapons and abilities. Non-linear Exploration: Players often explore interconnected worlds with branching paths, hidden shortcuts, and secrets to discover. High Difficulty: Souls-like games are notorious for their high difficulty levels, punishing players for mistakes but rewarding them for perseverance and skill improvement. Minimal Handholding: These games typically provide minimal guidance to the player, allowing them to figure out the game mechanics, story, and world lore through exploration and experimentation. RPG Elements: Role-playing game elements such as character customization, leveling up, and equipment management are common in souls-like games. Some well-known examples of souls-like games include "Bloodborne," "Nioh," "Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice," and "Lords of the Fallen," among others. These games often attract players who enjoy a challenging, immersive, and rewarding gaming experience.
It's a type of rpg where you have to like getting killed over and over by certain enemies to finally learn how to dodge their attacks and eventually kill them before you smash your keyboard or controller out of rage. It's much fun to some appearantly.
It made sense that older (A)RPGs stuck to only "representations" of combat, due to the technology, dev cycles, and overall culture of emulating tabletop games. But it doesn't make sense that modern ones keep doing the same thing but a little worse. Chasing the soulslike formula is not new but a lot of those games forget too much of the RPG part of it and don't get creative with skills and items. So let's see if this can do both!
Yeah I'm a huge fan of modern ARPGs, but I am endlessly disappointed that things like strength, intelligence, and dexterity is tied to items. Like if I'm a wizard and I level up let me put it into intelligence.
I remember saying about D3 compared to D2 that pace is moving in the wrong direction; that simply making the game faster doesn’t make it better. Cool to see an ARPG take the opposite approach and slow the game down to a pace that’s more strategic and deep.
I love the visceral combat. Instead of fighting tens of copy-pasted minions you have to approach each encounter with care. Makes it much more tense and exciting.
Awesome video MrLlama!! I kinda prefer more density on monsters packsize games... You played another game the other day Dwarven Realms, that felt like D2 but on WoW camera, with a lot of monsters coming to you and you blasting them.. I kinda liked it... I like to have a lot of monsters and blasting through them, like in D2.. over having a game that feels empty and you are 99% of the time just walking
I’m sure this game will be great. The ori games were insanely good. Plus I generally agree with llama’s opinions. I’m excited. Hope I have time to play
Indie devs are becoming much more important going forward with pushing genres forward. Especially as more corporate publishers are pushing for the things we all hate, like mobile and live service games.
Still waiting for a Nox style game, but this look pretty good too. Definitely going to follow this one. BTW Nox wasn't a hard game, but unlike modern ARPGs, every opponent actually felt like an opponent that you had to fight one by one, rather than just being swept away in your aoe. Also it had just enough story to be interesting without feeling overwhelming.
Nox is my favorite game. I've been through it dozens of times. Magical atmosphere, wonderful music! I was so looking forward to the release of Nox2. Unfortunately, it never happened.
I cannot eat it for this game. I just hope the impact feels “weighty/weighted” the same way the actual weapons and gear do. I’ve been waiting for that for a lonnngggg time!
This games looks like it is blending my two favorite things loot and souls gameplay. I love random loot and builds formed around that. This loot system is overly complex but just seems enjoyable. Souls combat is really good. Salt and Sacrifice or Hollow Knight are the best “Soulslike” for me. This looks like the best gameplay. Some of the spacing needs a tweak but it reminds me of Salt and Sacrifice you just have to git gud.
I was very disappointed about Diablo 4. And after I found No Rest for the Wicked, it was like a ray of light in the kingdom of darkness. This game immediately sunk into my heart. So beautiful! This world will be really interesting to explore! I can't wait for its release.
The only thing keeping me from buying this is not knowing if it's crossplay. I want to get it on pc, but all my buddies play on Xbox or ps5. Still waiting for this info.
The dev in the comments is saying all the right things that makes me want to buy the game. Offline mode - check Crossplay - check Respec - maybe Steam Deck compatibility - maybe
That's such a good way to put it, 'combat has lost its meaning.' I literally like...every time a new arpg comes out, d4, le, whatever, I try to play it, but by the time you get to end game, which takes 0 time, it immediately just becomes 'ok which of these 100 passives/actives clears the entire screen' and that is SOOOOO boring to me. It's why I'm addicted to Lost Ark, even though the game's systems themselves are actual toxic trash, the combat itself is soooooo good. :< Makes me sad.
@@thomasmahler the game itself looks very promising. A good spellcasting mechanics are needed in these types of games. Cuz I'd love to play this game as a mage/battle mage

In an action game, you aren't able to simply brute force your way through. You need the dexterity and motor skills, regardless of your skills or items you find throughout the game. @@romo7919
Totally agree about the difficulty of combat. I lost interest in Last Epoch because I found it too easy, there's no challenge, destroying mobs with ease. Just becomes boring.
Diablo like RPGs have never had difficult combat apart from end game bosses. The end game loop is always blasting everything as fast as possible. The mob density does not allow THAT tactical combat apart from -again- bosses.
Diablo 2/3/4 have scaling difficulty settings even today (no one forces you to play the game past Adventurer/Normal), but you have the option. Not sure how you could argue that couldn't be done in NRFTW.
I mean, they did initially want to head into that direction, from what I heard Mosqueira's initial version was that. But that wasn't 'Diablo' enough, so they killed it. We just always wanted to see this kinda stuff being done in an ARPG and since nobody else did it, we did 🤣
Finally - devs understanding gaming make an ARPG. I love what I see! Nonrandom levels, real combat. Less slot machine more game. Setting looks awesome. I didnt play ori - but watched some gameplay - loved it. I hope this will be a success!!!
I was really interested. Then you said souls like and i saw the combat. Just not into souls like games. Has nothing to do with the difficulty, i just don't like the combat style. I really like the aesthetic of the game though.
I think if it's more souls-like then we should call it that, most of the stuff you described are souls-like features not ARPG. Actually this style, isometric camera, combat, bosses, itemization etc. is not even unique to this game, there's been plenty in the rogue like genre for example. I completely agree about modern ARPG's combat but this isn't really an ARPG.
Why? At what point has the 'ARPG' definition turned into 'Needs to have LMB click-spam combat, tons of stupid enemy hordes and crazy numbers and explosions on the screen at all time'? Diablo 1 wasn't that yet and I was there at that point. If enemies swarmed you in D1, you were pretty much dead. ARPG just means 'Action RPG' and I think our game has all the landmarks of being extremely action driven (I'd say more so than any Diablo game since their action is mostly driven by numbers, not actual action') and it has extremely deep RPG Systems. But yes, it's not your typical modern super spam everything is crazy ARPG where the first boss has 11.000 hp, that is correct 🤣
@@thomasmahlerI think a lot of people consider ARPGs to be games like Diablo 2, Grim Dawn, Path of Exile etc. when really the term ARPG encompasses a lot more than that. The issue ultimately comes from the term for these genres being far too broad, I mean look at RPGs these days, the gaming industry has evolved to the point where these terms are no longer relevant enough to describe the genre of game imo.
So is it a diablo game or is it a single player story game? Also do you always have like 30 baskets hanging off your character? That part's kind of off putting.
Wow, that's awesome! I mean, we made No Rest for the Wicked exactly for people like you (and me 😂), so it's awesome to see that it paid off! :)
The best games are often the ones that the developers themselves want to play ❤

The game is not out yet
Having better fight mechanics would have taken the focus away from D4’s atrocious itemization. 😂
Blizzard went from being 2 steps ahead to being 3 steps behind. Today they would never “risk” making D4 a souls like. It would rock tho.
I mean, they did initially want to head into that direction, from what I heard Mosqueira's initial version was that. But that wasn't 'Diablo' enough, so they killed it.
We just always wanted to see this kinda stuff being done in an ARPG and since nobody else did it, we did 🤣
Shane about the character design.
Like it matters in top down view, by a Barbie
dark soul and diablo have a child be like or what diablo 4 should have been
Finally - devs understanding gaming make an ARPG.
Can you parry? I'm quite sure I didn't see you parry any hit and that's crucial in souls like game and that's definitely souls like fight
Modern ARPG's are just clicker games with more sophisticated graphics.
@cheesedanishable You know that souls games are literally ARPGs?
@@thomasmahlerI think a lot of people consider ARPGs to be games like Diablo 2, Grim Dawn, Path of Exile etc. when really the term ARPG encompasses a lot more than that. The issue ultimately comes from the term for these genres being far too broad, I mean look at RPGs these days, the gaming industry has evolved to the point where these terms are no longer relevant enough to describe the genre of game imo.
@@rijsmiddel8765 just like how arpgs are diablo like in same way souls game are not diablo like. Makes sense right ?
obviously better than DIV
Thank god we did not get that for d4.looks clunky af
So is it a diablo game or is it a single player story game? Also do you always have like 30 baskets hanging off your character? That part's kind of off putting.
Souls like are arpg... just a sub genre of arpg... this game just mixes the 2 arpgs as one
