I am actually impressed with the increase in unique drops.. I mean, for a 100 run comparison it doesn't look like a lot, but if we account for extended runs and overall gameplay during days and days that really scales up to substantial amounts of unique/set/rare drops and potentially some GGs. keep up the good work bro!
Good job on the video dude, glad that you know that MF isn't everything and you did this purely for the concept/testing itself. Tyrael's Might is the only item in the game that i still miss from the Holy Grail and i messed with anywhere from 300mf - 800mf and i couldn't REALLY tell the difference in the drops.. but after i took a break from MF'ing for Tyrael's and looking for Zod/Bases with my 30mf (from self wielding infinity) nova sorc i was in awe when rare items still dropped like Nightwing's, Facets, Shako, Arachnid's, Ravenlore, Stormlash, Griswold's Redemption.. its insane
I''m brand new to Diablo and heard D2 is best so i bought D2R. I asked a twitch streamer for help getting started and he gave me my first charm. 11% magic find has really helped the early game. I'm almost done with Act 1.

completed a grail a few years back, and I shit you not, the last item I needed was the bloody skull collector and while it was the last one left it took ages to find... found several griffons before that... RNG giveth and RNG taketh.
Did this with hero editor back in the day offline and essentially every item that has a unique drops a unique. the way the game works is it looks at table for loot, picks items from that table, then checks MF, then rolls item rarity based on MF. if you have infinite MF, all items that can drop unique, do.
Not true, first of all magic find and the math involved in determining drops is not so simple and second I have tried this offline before with 85000% mf(you can't get much more than that) and I still get plenty of normal and superior items so I don't see a world where every drop is a unique if you can't even get all magic drops, unless you start messing with the game files I don't think it's possible.

I've seen a couple people do this experiment before and it seemed that over a certain point of MF you just get way more rare items than the uniques you want
well mf is kinda complicated in d2. when you kill something the game rolls first what item will drop. there is a possibility that it will be a scroll, pot, charm, jewels, runes, etc. that aren't affected by mf. then ofc it can drop gear items like armor, weapons and jewelery. this is affected by mf. so when it rolled to drop an item the mf will influence the chance for the quality of the item with white being most common and then magic, rare, set and unique. however with magic items there aren't really any diminishing returns. this is why high mf is rather shit to find bases and why i have swap gear to 0 out mf for cow runs when i want to farm for specific bases. because with high mf you will literally not drop anyhing white anymore lol. without hero editor cheat charms it is ofc not that bad and not everything will be basically at least magic but even normal mf that you would have can greatly decrease white/grey drops. however for rares, sets and uniques the diminishing returns kinda flatline the curve and insane mf is usually not worth it. the sweet spot between killspeed and mf is usually at around 250-450 depending on the char, gear and build etc. in addition to all of that there is also these monster level and area level shenanigans going on where sometimes the game rolls a shako and that it's unique but the area/boss prevents it because the item can simply not drop where you currently are or from the monster you killed. this will then drop a rare shako with tripple durability instead. or double dura if it wanted to roll a set. however this will also happen when the game simply doesn't have a unique or set version of the item that rolled to drop.
Your spreadsheet is not going to be predictable, because you didn't take into account the rares that spawn with double durability and triple durability. Double durability means it was going to spawn as a unique item, triple means it would of spawned as a set item, but since that item doesnt exist, it spawns as a rare. So to find the true value of 20,000% mf you need to pick the rares up. If only this game has a unique and set item for each weapon.
I understand your thinking and if I was just working out how many uniques/set dropped from 20000%, I would agree. But in comparing 200% to 20,000% and I didn't check the rares for failed uniques in either, then surely it is an equitable comparison? I would love each item base to have a unique/set version.
You have a point but the "value" of MF isn't based off of failed uniques and set items. So picking them up to see that its failed proves nothing as far as value in MF terms. No one is increasing their MF in D2 thinking "I do this so I can get my triple durability rare Sacred Armor." People are increasing their MF for uniques mainly. His comparison was fine and showed exactly why its pointless to have way too much MF.
100 runs is not that much when we talk about so much randomness - the type of items monster can drop, the amount of monsters, the amount of boss groups (besides the 3 specific ones). if you do another 100 runs the numbers may be totally different. 1000 runs will average it way better. Saying that, 20k MF is pointless. Kill speed is way better anyway, and around 400MF is your golden spot. P.S. The game is insane. I dont do Holy grail, but i've made 20+ characters that are lvl 85 and up, and leveling them up in terror zones ect. I have found Tyrael's recently lol, and i've found Zod, but i do not have any single SOJ or Mara's , nor Jah rune for Enigma :D How does this even make sense lol.

Interesting. When I ran 800ish (many years ago) I felt like the set items dropped way more frequently than anything else but also lots of blues. Mostly played with around 200-300 on any given build and didn't sweat the numbers too much - back then I could just embrace the grind
So the MF diminishing returns is pretty well documented on quite a few sites. Below is the table for magic find values and how much it effects the drop rate of items at 100% MF break point. Assuming the values keep scaling in a similar fashion all the way to 20k MF then i would suspect that you are barely gaining any benefit at all for unique drops. 100%-200% MF seems to be the easiest most beneficial break point. If you are sacrificing kill speed to get more then 200% MF you are probably lowering your over all odds of finding unique items pretty significantly. As someonenwho has pkayed D2 for 20+ years, it's always amusing to see people make a similar mistake with gold find, they try to get silly amounts of gold find like 600% etc. The game itself has caps on how much any individual monster can drop, and you hit that cap around 200% GF.
@@Saveddrip depends on which LoD version you are playing. Best test is to equip you GF % then do 10 or 20 Trav runs and see what gold the council drops. Then try a different GF% like up it from 200 to 400 and see how much the total changes from the next 10 runs.
Hm ithats an ideat but like you said, sample size doesnt give us an accurate view of this. if you were willing why not do 100 runs per sitting recording the data then publishing what it looks like at 1k I started a holy grain in S1, and only recently finished in whatever season is out now a month or two ago, its TOUGH and you gotta stay with it. happy to say Ive found every item in d2r though + runes

Better chance is optional and it should not slow you down. Therefore - more then 200 is just not worth it. again, really good video. You dont need 1000 runs, because most people will never do 1000 runs. Normal playing today is 1-2 hours per day, so....
In addition, you cannot measure this fairly online, as the BER drop videos for offline runefarming already explained that the SEED game is obviously the key factor in getting drops at all, in complete disregard of how much MF you got. If you want to test this it should be the same SEED game, as otherwise you cannot make any statement using random seed games.
From what I understand about the Seed videos is that it applies to a poppable item and even that is very specific, make this movement, take this amount of time exactly to get there etc. The monsters spawning on an offline game and an online game are still random each time, it is only the map layout which is static. If the monsters are different, with different unique/champion mobs everytime a new game is loaded, then i don't understand how this could not be equitable? If i am wrong then please correct me, because i would love to learn new things about this game.
So first of all there is a misconception here about how MF works. MF does not affect the base drop of an item at all. Once a base item is rolled/dropped MF affects whether that base item is rolled as a magic item, rare item, set item, or unique item. Seeding determines the initial number in the random number generator that determines what base items can drop. It also affects things like map layouts, monster spawns, and to some degree the affixes on an item but it is still not fully understood yet and leaves a lot to be learned about how seeds works. You can test this your self with a seeded world. Put on a bunch of MF gear go find a seeded item rack and keep running the route to that item rack every time and you still see even under the exact same conditions the item will not always drop at the same rarity. I have seen people target farm uniques via weapon and armor racks in seeds by doing the exact same thing with varying amounts of MF until they hit the unique drop.
The problem is that when you leave the game it resets. So it would take forever to complete 100 chaos runs. You could clear each act as regular and infinite mf though.
Why do you use LoH with a foher? (the +% damage to demons doesn't work FoH OR Smite either) Also, why not 2x 40% mf rings instead of 2 Nagels? Sure Nagel is more common and cheaper, but doesn't really offer that much in hell in return rather than attack rating (what you don't benefit from and -6 damage reduce)
I don't normally wear them, I had to remove gear to get the MF down to 200%. Chancies are normally on. As for the 40% MF rings, it's an online character and I haven't found any 40% rings, I can't justify the cost of trading for them for the extra 20% mf when i am already running 450% and then 700% on swap. diminishing returns tells me that at that stage 20% isn't doing much.
Surprisingly I still have the Shako, harder to give away than i thought haha. I guess non ladder people have most things already. It's yours if you need it
I did a similar test a while back and I got 67 uniques over 40 runs with 85000 mf but I did clear the entrance area as well which probably got me about 5 to 10 extra uniques. Thing is there were many cases where Diablo didn't drop anything unique which to me it pretty much means that stacking lots of mf is especially useless on bosses, they're only useful for their high TC drops other than that elite packs tend to drop more consistently plus you can farm them on TZs. Small sample size but the numbers aren't that far off from yours considering the ridiculous amounts of mf.
Yeah, I gave away a couple of items here, but i ended up just dumping the rest in a free game. Wasn't many takers, you dudes are all geared up already it seems.
if you know anything about the drop rates you know that unique items are well below 1%, so you DO want as much mf as you can possibly get. 10 runs with only a couple drops past rare VS 10 runs with several drops past rare proves this. try this with 100,000 mf.
You can get over 10K MF without cheats/fake charms . That weird Souls easter egg that was found recently gives you MF, and if you let them do the trick long enough you'd end with basically infinite MF. Yet, it takes way too long time to be worth it. Maybe if you leave the game open and go to sleep, and you come back the next day, to clear the whole game of monsters. I see no real use, except for searching for unique rings. Maybe that way you can find most unique rings in 1 go.
You are mistaken. The 42.67% increase is in reference to the number 75. The formula is (107-75)/75x100% If you looked at things the other way around, a 30% decrease from 107 gives you 75. The formula remains the same (75-107)/107x100%
It has always been my contention that anything beyond 250%mf is just window dressing and bragging rights. This is the opinion that I formed way back in the day, like 20 years ago (whenever LoD dropped and I got serious about playing).
This is true. I chose to do P1 because 50% of the players play online and cannot reliably set a players number. Players 1 seemed like the best baseline.

This is a pretty dumb test as everyone knows the sweetspot of mf in D2 lies around 350-400%, neglecting this is just making your whole experiment bullocks.
This was me wanting to know how much the mf falls off by putting an insane amount in. I needed a base line to compare it against and chose 200 for that. I prefaced the video by explaining that I run my normal online MF character with about 420% and you don't want to compromise speed for mf as the gains are not worth it. Which part did i neglect? It's ok that you didn't like the video, I know these aren't for everyone.

And that is why people on classic would stop at around 100-150% mf because we were chasing rares.

I don't normally wear them, I had to remove gear to get the MF down to 200%. Chancies are normally on. As for the 40% MF rings, it's an online character and I haven't found any 40% rings, I can't justify the cost of trading for them for the extra 20% mf when i am already running 450% and then 700% on swap. diminishing returns tells me that at that stage 20% isn't doing much.
I'm assuming you're not going to take runes or normal base items unto account since Magic Find diesnt affect those items of course

I did a similar test a while back and I got 67 uniques over 40 runs with 85000 mf but I did clear the entrance area as well which probably got me about 5 to 10 extra uniques. Thing is there were many cases where Diablo didn't drop anything unique which to me it pretty much means that stacking lots of mf is especially useless on bosses, they're only useful for their high TC drops other than that elite packs tend to drop more consistently plus you can farm them on TZs.
Small sample size but the numbers aren't that far off from yours considering the ridiculous amounts of mf.

Yeah, I gave away a couple of items here, but i ended up just dumping the rest in a free game. Wasn't many takers, you dudes are all geared up already it seems.
if you know anything about the drop rates you know that unique items are well below 1%, so you DO want as much mf as you can possibly get. 10 runs with only a couple drops past rare VS 10 runs with several drops past rare proves this. try this with 100,000 mf.

You can get over 10K MF without cheats/fake charms . That weird Souls easter egg that was found recently gives you MF, and if you let them do the trick long enough you'd end with basically infinite MF. Yet, it takes way too long time to be worth it. Maybe if you leave the game open and go to sleep, and you come back the next day, to clear the whole game of monsters. I see no real use, except for searching for unique rings. Maybe that way you can find most unique rings in 1 go.

You are mistaken. The 42.67% increase is in reference to the number 75. The formula is (107-75)/75x100%
If you looked at things the other way around, a 30% decrease from 107 gives you 75. The formula remains the same (75-107)/107x100%

It has always been my contention that anything beyond 250%mf is just window dressing and bragging rights. This is the opinion that I formed way back in the day, like 20 years ago (whenever LoD dropped and I got serious about playing).

This is true. I chose to do P1 because 50% of the players play online and cannot reliably set a players number. Players 1 seemed like the best baseline.

mf is good just dont sacrifice speed for it. 50 items in 100 runs that took an hour isnt as good as 500 runs that gave you 100 items in an hour.

This is a pretty dumb test as everyone knows the sweetspot of mf in D2 lies around 350-400%, neglecting this is just making your whole experiment bullocks.
This was me wanting to know how much the mf falls off by putting an insane amount in. I needed a base line to compare it against and chose 200 for that. I prefaced the video by explaining that I run my normal online MF character with about 420% and you don't want to compromise speed for mf as the gains are not worth it. Which part did i neglect? It's ok that you didn't like the video, I know these aren't for everyone.
