Ugly's is an electrical field-reference book that every electrician should have on their jobs. It has so many useful diagrams, schematics, code articles, terms, math and much more. Rather than lugging around a huge 800-page codebook around with you everywhere, you can keep your Ugly's book in your tool pouch or in your pocket when you're on job sites.
Some examples of where you'd use Ugly's are:
SIZING MOTOR CONDUCTORS
You can use the FLC charts in the NEC, or just pull out your Ugly's manual. Ugly's has the FLC charts on single-pages back to back and if you tab the book like I do, they're easily accessible. Say we have a 208v 3-phase 10-horsepower motor on a job, and we need to figure out the current draw so we can decide what conductors to run to it. We'd open up the 3-phase FLC chart, look up 10HP, move over to the 208v column and find that this motor will draw 30.8-amps. Now we have our current and can start to figure out other factors that the motor may have to size the conductors or overcurrent-protection device.
SIZING EQUIPMENT GROUNDING CONDUCTORS
We can use Ugly's to size EGC's as well. We'd simply open the manual to the page labeled "Minimum Size Equipment Grounding Conductors For Grounding Raceway and Equipment." If we have a 100-amp breaker ahead of the piece of equipment, we look at the column to the left and choose 100-amps. Then we move over to the Copper column and see that this piece of equipment should have a #8 grounding conductor run to it.

I just got accepted back into a second year apprentice after 5 years "break" of being involved with a crappy company. Went into medical for the last 5 years... now I'm going back into electrical. The way you explain things and just the referencing to the uglies book is amazing it got the old cobwebs out of the gears and start getting my mind going. I literally start this Monday and I am excited, thank you.

Also, I'm in Pre-Apprenticeship classes rn, and Ugly's booklets are the very first and most important thing we got as a class. I cannot stress how handy this book has been whenever I thought I forgot how to do something, just look in the book find what I forgot and continue on.

Dustin, Another awesome video. I too worked for a 48 state contractor from St. Louis. I used to give everyone in the design dept Uglys books. Another tool I handed out was SqD motor slide rules. They are extremely useful as well. Suggestion, you could do a video on calculating branch circuit loads, then applying the breaker and conductor sizing. This could then take you to sizing a sub panel based on the feeder calculations. Just a thought. Respectfully, Kevin

I remember the first time I saw one, I was a new to the trade, straight out of a not very good trade school on an industrial job. I walked in on a discussion on how to wire 3 ways, these were all industrial guys with years of experience using contactors to control lights 3 ways were something some of them had never used, so they were all standing around with their Uglys out trying to figure it out. Newby walks in and tells them how to do it, dumb should have just told them I could do it, as they sent most of us home that afternoon because they were switching over to main power and the only guys who staid other than the power crew was the guys wiring the three ways.
I bought one as soon as soon as I could find one, 22 years ago you had to know where to buy them as soon as I found one it went into my tool kit and there has been one there ever since. Reading the comments I see there is now an Ap hmm

I have a 2017 Uglys book! Definitely came in handy for referring to conduit bending and small charts from the NEC book.

I just wanna say how much I appreciate you. I bought a flip house and so far I have found a ton of weird do it yourself wiring. The bathroom was a switched neutral for one light and the way they wired it was wrong. and when I went to add another light your videos walked me through how to undo what they did to make it all work the way I wanted. One thing I’m very disappointed that it doesn’t have is a wire phase/ color to number chart for when it’s time to pull in wire to the panels. I was very surprised when I was looking through it that it didn’t have it as it’s definitely a reference that’s more used than some of the other things in there. I contacted uglys about it but didn’t get a response. Not that phasing takes a long time, but when you’re pulling in 5 or 6 circuits at a time and have 7 panels to pull into it makes it easier to be able to see instantly what colors you need to stack.

the app is nice too! although not as much in it as the book, the calculators come in handy! So I use both :) lol But we are currently learning conduit bending in class so, I feel justified for using both haha.

Those are great to have, I also tell any apprentice to read through the code book alittle everyday to get familiar with it sounds crazy but if you read over a few times you will surprised how much you remember. I mean it's the electrical bible we need to know it
As a service tech I have this book in my van, but I found that I use the “Electrician’s Bible” app by Quky. It was a few bucks to by the full version, worth it!

Ugly's APP recommendation=GOLD!
Gotta remember that if you are putting a lot of conductors in a conduit you need to de-rate the ampacity of conductors in said conduit. Knowing how to de-rate conductors is a good skill to have. Gotta consider the temp rating of termination points in equipment, ambient temp, and as I mentioned # of conductors in a conduit.
for instance when you calculate box fill for an easy example 12 conductors count as 2.25 meaning 12/2 = 5.50
meaning 3 12/2 wires (16.50) would create a box fill violation in an 18 cubic inch box if there was a device installed as well. The device = 2. So 16.50 + 2 > 18 cubic inch box... point being grounds dont count as conductors for fills or correct me if im wrong.

You set the amperage on your overload relay to the FLA on the motor's nameplate on your motor starter. Yes you size your conductors to the FLC in article 430.138 in the NEC. Correct me if I am wrong.

You make great videos and content related to our trade. Keep up the great work. I do take offence to calling the 3rd and 4th year apprentices as wrench turners. I’m a 4th year, running mid 90s on all 3 years, and I can teach some journeymen on theory they’ve forgotten. I’m most definitely not a glorified wrench turner. I agree, 1st and 2nd year we were educated labourers to a certain degree, but 3rd and 4th, especially in the industrial trade, we are noteworthy electricians.

Regarding your example of equipment ground, my understanding is that you can share ground wires (only) between two circuits through a raceway. For example if you ran a 15A circuit and a 20A circuit in conduit, you could share the ground. If you do that, do you add the amperages of both circuits together to get the correct ground wire size from the table shown at 9:00? Or, since the ground would rarely be called on to carry short circuit current for both circuits at the same time, would you use the ground size for only the bigger of the two circuits?
I keep mine in my tool bag, the code book in my truck. It's way easier to use. Off subject a buddy of mine gave me a 1943 NEC that was his grandfather's.
