I really want to become an electrician and I have extremely good comprehensive skills and also am very good working with my hands and putting things together, but I have dyscalculia which is a learning difficulty that I’ve had all of my life which affects my ability to do basic arithmetic such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
@@bikelifespida4012 I feel for you I have dyslexic to, but I have trouble with reading and writing instead of math.
Hey brother; is the learning books on upstryve compatible for Australian Electrician Apprentices? Or is it specific to America?
Believe in yourself. Actual meaningful things are created through struggle.
Great encouragement 👍🏼
Definitely agree myself.
I’m struggling in my first year schooling right now and thank you
@@Kai-ln7sn I start my Apprenticeship in May, got the job though. Go into the field for the first time tomorrow.
I’m so sad. Almost 30 and I still don’t know my time tables yet here I am at 3am contemplating becoming a electrician. smh, thanks for bringing me back to reality
You can learn
Did u still persue being an electrician?
I'm 34. I just got my GED on September 7th 2023. All I've ever worked in is warehouse. I'm gonna give myself a shot at being an electrician or welding. MATH IS HARD FOR ME. I'd rather try and fail and try again than to never know and hold myself back for another 15 years. Good luck to you. It took me 3 years to get my GED, 2 months to get my CDL and lost it in 1 yr due to a bad decision while dealing with life. Things happen but if you don't try you'll be never know. For me it's been God's saving grace to have a new mindset & outlook on life. I pray you keep fighting for yourself. I dropped out of school in 9th grade. You can do it.
I’m 20 and don’t know my times table math has always been hard for me ever since being bullied in school and was really never comfortable working in class so I never did any work I’m hoping I can be brave enough to try something new all my life it’s felt like it I’m on hard mode I never had a dad to ask questions and learn off of I really hope I can man up
@@ChrisPLoops20 years old as well and can confidently say that I’ve neglected the early stages of my life. I was a failing student throughout a majority of my school years due to a mix of bad teaching and my learning disability in math that went unnoticed. Due to this, Ive had the daily struggles throughout my work setting and just ultimate regret for not even attempting to better myself in any form (Depression). With all the self doubt and pity over the years, I became a shell of myself. However, with this consistent self sabotage ,I finally said enough and applied to my local ibew electrical union which to my surprise, worked out so much better than anticipated. The point I make here is that whatever you’re going through whether it be a cognitive problem or not physically capable, I want you to completely erase whatever it is. I am living proof of the sheer magnitude that discipline can guide you through any obstacle. Become a fucking electrican or whatever is that you want to do, and please for the love of god, drop the self pitty.
Went through the union apprenticeship from 2002 - 2007. The program has a very structured continuity from one lesson to the next and if you apply yourself to do the best you can, it's no problem with the math at all. They teach you everything you need to know as far as the math itself is concerned. How it can apply in the field is limitless it seems and the apprenticeship just teaches you basics. Albeit "basics" can get fairly complicated but they build up to get there. I barely passed high School by the skin of my teeth including my math classes and at the end of my apprenticeship, I had the top score for academic performance and on the job training work reports. People tend to excel in the subjects they are interested in even though you may not have thought you are interested in some of this math, seeing how it applies to the electrical trade and if you're interested thoroughly in the electrical trade, the math is easy during the learning process because of it.
Thanks bro this helped 💪🏻
@@noonfig4258 No problem. Thanks for the feedback!
@@jaredkilgore7194 That is mad encouraging! Just got a job in the electrical field, start the school portion in May.
Bless you bro for inspiring me I take my aptitude test in upcoming April
@@ITZTYLER491 Math and I do not have the best relationship. I studied for my aptitude exam, but I definitely could've went harder studying. Anyway, the day I took my test I ran into a bunch of problems I knew would be legit problems. I just did the best I could, but felt I'd failed. Mentally told myself I'd do better next time. Got my test scores back a few weeks later, made a 7 out of 9. Anything is possible man!
I struggled with math in grade school, I was in my 30s when I got into the electrical trade. I knew I struggled to memorize things for school so I decided I wasn't going to put effort into any memorization, I'd focus on understanding the concepts being taught. I figured if I understood the underlying reasonings behind the math I'd be able to do the math. It worked very well I was always in the top portion of the classes and when exams came along I wasn't stressed about it because I'd put in the effort to know what I was doing.
Hey brother. Found your videos when I applied for the Ibew. I passed. Turns out I was #2 on the list. Now I’m working with a contractor. The turn around was really quick. I'm an apprentice electrician myself here in the Toronto area after graduating a pre-apprenticeship college program. I had an interview lined up just after school so it was perfect. I was working under a non union company, but unfortunately the people weren't the nicest and I wasn't fast enough for their expectations. Fortunately...I did learn a lot being with the old company and was able to bring my experience into the new. Working under this new company with a boss who's really cool, non union, and it's been nothing but fun for the most part with these guys and they're very understanding. I am happy to have gotten into this trade :)
Hey, from the Toronto area as well. There a a bunch of pre-apprenticeship programs out there. Just curious on where you went or which ones you’d recommend.
Thanks in advance
I've been practicing my math skills using Khan academy while I wait to enter the apprenticeship. It's great to know there is a specific company that helps the trades with training!
Thanks for your comment! We are excited to spread the word and let trades people know that there is a place for them to go when they need help. 1 on 1 online tutoring is extremely helpful especially when dealing with such challenging topics. Congratulations to you, Meghan, on your journey. Khan Academy is an excellent resource for study. I've recommended that site to many others in the past.
Right on Meghan!
Both Khan Academy and Upstryve are excellent resources. I know you’ve commented on my videos before and I appreciate you watching them! I’m trying to remember if you mentioned this, but where are you at in your application process right now?
@@MadElectrician thanks Steve! I really appreciate the time for your response. I am in the waiting process of moving from cohort 2 to cohort 1 (the only thing missing from my application are test scores which I can submit until the testing center opens). Applicants in cohort 1 will be registered in the JATC Area 2 apprenticeship. When the list is depleted and those individuals are hired by employers, the program starts to pull from cohort 2.
Meghan, hope it went well , what courses helped you the most when prepping for tests?
I needed these positive words. I have an aptitude test to get in the Union in Michigan in less than 25 days. I’m stressing because I want to be an electrician so bad but I’m horrible at math and basically forgot everything I learned when I got my GED, which was at least 10 years ago. I’m currently using Khan Academy but it’s just making me realize I know even less than I thought lol.

I just had my an interview for an apprenticeship. This gentleman is talking with his wife to consider whether or not to take me in. I was so surprised about the interview because I haven't even started school yet, and I thought it would take a semester or so in order to start. Another solid video man. I am someone who is very mathematically challenged lol. I have been slowly teaching myself math in preparation for my aptitude test and with time running out I am starting to stress a bit. I have told you before that I am in healthcare management. I work 65-70 hours a week so finding time between work, wife and kid to do math is different. Hoping for the best! Thanks again for your incredibly useful content
Hi i recommend ibew prep, its really helpful with simulation tests.
70 hours of work plus family time is definitely no easy task and we commend you for your dedication. Definitely consider using our service if you ever want hyper focused tutoring which would cut your study time in half. The difficult part of studying is not having any clear road map on what exactly you should be studying in the first place. This causes people to try and study everything which as you may know is not a very efficient strategy. We make sure to guide you effectively on what you personally need to learn and since we provide our tutoring service online it can really fit into anyone's schedule. Hope this helps and maybe we will chat with you soon. Good luck with everything! - bit.ly/UpstryveWebsite
Definitely looking forward to that Uglys book review. I suggest if you enough time, review and teach us subscribers almost every topic in the book, basically an overview on the book. Bet that’ll get a good amount of views. Make a playlist just like the first one you did on how to get into the apprenticeship and just explain the formulas it has and codes. Love the amount of information you give man! This channel is definitely a Gem! Keep it up!

I'm 18 and am going to college right now to get my associates of applied science in C&RW, I have talked to countless students and many instructors but your videos have been the most helpful and useful advice for my future and I can't thank you enough. Because of your videos I know have a true understanding of how I'm going to get started and just how the whole process works. I also work retail so when you talk about how you worked retail too I can relate to the feeling of just wanting to get a job like an electrician and get away from getting yelled at by random people all day. Thank you for your videos you actually are the only person to inform me of how the whole process works!
Thank you so much for your videos! My son is graduating high school in May and looking into the Electrician Apprenticeship Program here in Kansas City Mo. He struggles in Math and this helps give him some confidence!
Can you please clarify a few things:
1) The areas of algebra that should be studied you mentioned were fractions, factors, decimals, etc. on Khan academy every area covers so many other topics. For example: there are lessons for x and + fractions but there’s also ordering and comparing fractions. Should that be part of the “fractions” we study?
2) In your own experience once in the apprenticeship, did you have to travel often and far for job assignments? And how often?
I suck at math 😑...I'm glad I stayed tuned in. I'm going to use RUclips and math for dummies book to help me.

I agree most of this video. in my humble opinion, no you don't need to be but you will be able to make your progress faster if you are good at math. here is something mad electrician would agree. you don't really need to be someone special to be in this job. some special quality can help your career but this is trade work, not software programming or engineering. just keep your work and experience more.

I basically have to relearn math starting all the way from fifth grade to senior year of high school. I’m 25 and I’ve literally forgotten everything, or I was never taught it. By the way I’ve already started my course, and I’m struggling at the moment. Hopefully I can learn 8 years worth of math in 2 years. Otherwise, I wasted 13k.

I currently just started at a trade school and today was my first day we started with fractions today and let me tell you I am struggling!!!! I am 27 now I forgot everything I learned in school and I can’t even tell you how many times I contemplated walking out of the class and just quitting. But I’m going to stick it out because I’m willing to put in the work and learn because this is what I want as a career!
What about mechanical inclination to begin? My lack of experience with tools is embarrassing but I want to learn without being laughed off the jobsite.
That’s a great question. I felt the same way too when I applied. I had some experience with a few power tools but knew pretty much nothing compared to all of the other apprentices I started out with. I would just say to not be too worried about being embarrassed or not knowing anything. You’ll learn. There is a reason why apprenticeships last 4-5 years. It takes time to but if I can do it then you definitely can too. The nice thing is that when you first start out you’re really not expected to know anything.
Thanks for the confidence booster!

Thanks for watching! ⚡️
I was in a college electrical engineering program but struggled as I got into the more advanced topics dealing with differential equations and complex multi variable calculus topics. I ended up dropping out as a result of difficulties with my junior year courses on math as well as family related issues trying to deal with my mother's diagnoses with terminal cancer. I'm at a point in my life where I'm trying to get back into that career path but don't have the money to afford a college program and felt that enter a trade by doing an apprenticeship would be a much more economical way of achieving my desire to work with electronics. Do the later years of the apprenticeship program touch on similar topics of advanced multi variable calculus and differential equations? If so it would be good to know early so I can try and find the right tutoring and support to help me get through the topics I failed in before. I'm hoping that one day working in this trade could help me finance a return to college in order to complete my degree as an electrical engineer, but who knows,I might enjoy the more hands on trade based work and just make my new goal becoming a master electrician. Would appreciate your input!
I take my aptitude test and do my interview in about 3 months and your videos have helped motivate me immensely. Hoping to start getting some on the job experience as a construction wireman while I wait to see if I can get into my local unions program! Your video on whether I need prior experience in construction really helped seal my decision to continue down this path. Thanks so much!
Jacob I seriously doubt you will need differential and multi variable calculus for an electrician the uglys book highlighted tells you the level of math needed namely ratios, percentages and basic algebra manipulating variables solving very simple linear equations.
If you are keen on electrical engineering then advanced math you talked about single variable and multi variable calculus will be very important Kjan academy is very good there is a classic book on engineering math that was used in many engineering degrees in the UK was the book by Ken Stroud Engineering Mathematics which take you through all the topics in a fast and simple way it’s more like a workbook giving you basic examples and then questions to solve in my view the fastest way to learn a lot of math quickly. There were two editions of this book a vol 1 and 2 both around a thousand pages but trust me it’s the best book to work from. There was also a more basic foundational book. If you had all 3 books my advice it would take you through your engineering course no problem. Ken past away some years ago and since then dexter booth added to the book. Great textbook my friends who were aeronautical, mechanical and materials scientists used this book as did I an economist.
@@mathman0101 Thanks for the advice. Really appreciate it. I guess my ideal hope would be to spend the time becoming a journeyman and putting a good number of years with the union and use the money I was making to help me go back to school and finish my degree in electrical engineering. I was in the wrong headspace in the past which really handicapped my ability to succeed and I just need to find an economical way to finance school and working a trade while getting my education part time seems like a great choice. My biggest dream would be to get a position working as an electrician in some sort of high tech manufacturing with the intent of transition to a more engineering related role doing things like designing PCB and programming PLC's after getting my degree. Your advice just gives me more confidence that now that I'm in a place to really move forward with my career dreams that I can succeed in those topics I've failed at before.
@Mad Electrician all your videos have really helped me navigate and feel well prepared for whatever might come my way in my journey to apprenticeship. I would love to see a video maybe talking about Construction Wireman programs if you know anything about them as it's something I'm hoping to pursue to start getting some experience on actual job sites. My local has a CW program that you can just call in for work opportunities but it's very sparse on what that sort of work would entail compared to what apprentices do so hearing what you might know would be great!
You seem like you’d fit more on the Industrial/Control side of electrical. Not so much commercial construction and maintenance. That’s just my opinion based off your comment. I think you’ll enjoy hands on work it really is fun sometimes too.
This is one year later but I highly doubt electricians even take calculus at all. If you want to be an engineer apply yourself. I’ll be struggling with you until we make it man. Whatever your goal is now, I hope you’re making it man.
Thank you! It's been a great time actually. Working through my 2-2 semester now.

For all the numeral gymnastics that everyone learns in school, much of the real world doesn't use anything beyond arithmetic and basic algebra. But then not everyone trains to be an engineer or speculator either.
I just went to turn in documents for sound apprenticeship and am just waiting to see if ill be getting an interview. Hopefully they do call me and hopefully I understand it because I don't feel like I'm that good at math or remembering things
If you suck at math, this is probably why, in school, most of our courses we took aren't math driven. Also, in college or university, most of our courses are not math specific. Use tech to your advantage now to get good. The internet, apps and videos will help out huge. Anyone can get good now. I'm 47, taking applied math and i haven't been in school in a long time. Im not worried, I'm going to be an Electrician or Nurse (probably Electrician though). Im using my phone to my advantage. it's going to work. I have no doubt. One day, im going to wake up and be retirement age, I'm not going to be lazy and regret my choices. I still love my job in healthcare but I'm not getting paid what I'm worth. Im earning this all the way. Keep the faith, work hard and you'll get there!
I feel like pulling my hair out reading this f**king textbox! I am almost done my First year studies but now I'm reading about things that just feel so far beyond my comprehension ability. Time Constants? VARS/Reactive power and apparent power? Power factor? Wtf is an RL circuit? Bro, I'm so lost 😭

I just got signed up as an apprentice. I was wondering, does first term of schooling consist of a lot of math?
Hey Denver!
Like I mentioned in the video, the level of math that you’ll be doing as a first term apprentice is very basic. You’re constantly building off of concepts that you’ve already learned, so it’s just important to make sure that you’re taking time to learn and understand the concepts before moving on. There is a decent amount of math in first term (if it’s the same as it is there as it is here) but it’s not overly difficult.

Of course, allot of people come in with no experience or not good at math. Just have to pass a basic algebra test and reading comp. Hey mate just wondering what kinda math methods i need to focus on ? Thank you
IF you whant to sucess in your electrician school, you know to need basic electrician math. IF you whant to develop furter after basic electrician to become engenier, then yes you need more deeper math knowledge. But in real life for an electrician you dont realy need math. You whil never count math om your daily jobb. And today there are apps and programs that calculate all THE thing for you. And when you work you lern thumb rules and standards that Applies to everything you do. So IF you whant to work with comurcial electronics, production with housing and so on you dont realy need math. But you need to know basic stuff and you need to know how your using your equipment like multimeter and so on, and you need to have a srructured mind and high safety awerness.
What if you need to relearn all this stuff? Like fractions and stuff do you learn that in the school? While your doing the apprenticeship?
Can you use a calculator? Does anyone use that ?
I really want to say that i would give the effort, but after 13 years of school, i know that i can never stay focused no mater how hard i try
Yeah this isn’t for me. Failed my test, not sure if I’m gonna take it again
I graduated high school 2 years ago and I have finally decided what I want my career to be, you’re videos have helped me a lot, thank you so much !
As long as it’s not calculus I’m feeling confident 😊😂
No calculus! ⚡️🤘🏼⚡️
I’m quite nervous about starting my apprenticeship as an electrician, I’m not bad at maths but nothing special, do I need to be more advanced to become an electrician or will I learn during my apprentice!
Hey, great question! As long as you're good enough to pass your aptitude test then you should be golden. Everything else that you need to learn you will learn during your apprenticeship 👍🏼
Is it hard to get an apprenticeship at my local union straight out of high school with no experience?
Ive already completed my 2 year Electrical Engineering Technician course. I recently passed the IBEW aptitude test and have been put on a waitlist to begin an apprenticeship. I wouldnt say im amazing at math but im guessing im good enough atleast since i passed the aptitude test and completed the schooling, right? Would you say the most technical and challenging part is the schooling? Im a very confident and professional person and i feel like ill do better on the job site learning hands on then when i was in school. I thought the schooling was tough. Im really excited to get on the job site.
Is this a school the employer does or we do outside of work? Like student loans and all that
hey i wanna be an electrician , but im scared because im very bad at math lol thats the only thing holding me back lol , any advice?
You will need math but it isn’t that bad man it really depends on how bad at math you feel you are. I’d say give it a shot it’s a rewarding career. I’m a 3rd year Canadian electrical apprentice.
Hey Cortez!
I agree with Josh. It really isn’t too bad. Like I explained in the video, things so get to a point where they get complex, but everything is building off of eachother. So as long as you are doing your homework and trying your best to learn things before you get to the next class then you will be golden. I know a lot of people who really struggle with math who have made it through the apprenticeship. If you want to do this, don’t let that scare you from doing it. You got this ⚡️
@@MadElectrician thanks man i really appreciate that , means alot . need your opinion on this one , ok so i choose electrician as a random career , that is because i saw a friend doing electrician and i thought it would be fun BUT im worried what if it dosent work out for me , out of your experience can you tell me what you had to sacrifice and do to be an a successful electrician , were they any bad days ? trial error ? .

What kind of math do you learn in electrician school?
Don't know about you but when I went to school if you struggled with math they just left you behind. I never did catch up...
Sir Im dheyn i am from Philippines and i love to become an industrial electrician but i am not good at math i am 15 yrs old turning 16 this april, do industrial electrician need to be good at math?
Thanks for watching!
You definitely want to have a good basic understanding of math. Pretty much just basic arithmetic. Really just for the reasons that I specified in the video. You definitely don't need to be amazing at it though.
Good info man! Any idea if there’s apps where you can do math problems that you’ll see in aptitude test?
Hey Anthony!
That’s a great question. I don’t personally know of any that are specifically geared towards the aptitude test, but if you watch my Taking the Aptitude Test video I talk about an app called Khan Academy. In that app there are some specific subjects that you can learn and those are basically the same types of questions that you’ll have in your aptitude test.
I know there are practice tests that you can take online. I personally have never taken any so I’m not sure exactly what to recommend for those though.
Hey just a question here so after completing the apprenticeship with the Ibew I would like to move to a different state would they switch me over to that state of my choosing?
Hey Jonathan!
That’s definitely something that they can do. You also don’t even need to be a journeyman to transfer to another local, they can transfer you as an apprentice too. As long as there is an IBEW local in the area/ state that you’re moving to.
@@MadElectrician thank you so much for replying Brotha! Will be applying now that was pretty much the only thing stopping me also wanted to say thank you for uploading all these informative videos. You’re doing a huge service for all of us future electricians
hm
I’m 33 and want to start in the electrical trade need a career and stable income. Don’t want to be involved with flooring anymore. Will having basic knowledge help me get into the apprentice program faster?
Multiplication, division, percentages...
Where can one study for mechanical comprehension?
They will hire anyone in Florida. They are begging for help in my area.
I don't think we have things like signal processing, electromagnetism and radio frequency, these are the reasons why I dropped out of college
