      4th year apprentice here. IBEW local union 640,Phoenix.
      I'll tell like it is. There's certain locals that have a 2-year waiting list and are very very competitive and then there's certain locals that are basically called walkthroughs whereas anybody that wants to can basically become an apprentice. Now if you're serious about making this a career and say you're in LA where the locals are very competitive it might be worth moving to let's say local 640 Phoenix or somewhere around that area I can tell you right now we are hurting for journeyman here at 640. So much so that I'm not going to name any names I don't snitch but we got you know third and fourth year apprentices that are doing shit that would normally get you kicked out and they're keeping them in the program so they're trying to ramp up and we have this big Taiwanese chip manufacturing plant and they're saying we need about 1200 journeyman and for every journeyman we have a one-to-one ratio so that's an apprentice. And are basically Phoenix is one of the most booming construction cities in the country right now

    I had to wait a couple years and worked as a trainee in the mean time. It was with union contractors though. The apprenticeship board liked those who were persistent and kept bugging them. It shows you want it and I think it also weeds out the slackers. Here in Florida it was such a tight unit the only way you got in was if you were relation. I met the right people though and impressed the right ones by being punctual and there everyday rain or shine. I’m sure it is different now though.

    Hi, these videos are so helpful, thank you! I have a question, what should a resume look like especially when coming from a completely different field?

    • @MadElectrician
      @MadElectrician  3 года назад +4

      Hey Thandi! Sorry about the delayed response. That’s a really good question and to be honest I’m not sure how to do that question justice with a comment reply. Maybe I should make a video at some point talking about a resume and cover letter? If you reach out to me on Instagram then I’d be more than happy to send you what my resume looked like when I applied.
      Here is basically what you want to do though. Your resume and cover letter are basically your proof for why you would be a good fit for the apprenticeship. What I mean by that is this: When I made my resume, though I didn’t have any construction or electrical related experience, I highlighted that fact that in every job I’ve had I was promoted to a position of leadership within a short period of time. My resume shows the dates and titles for the positions I was promoted to. Of course, it also highlighted big achievement that’s I’ve had in prior jobs.
      When I was in my interview and the interviewers asked me, “Why should we choose you?”, I responded by saying this. “Everyone can say that they would be a good applicant for this apprenticeship, but I can prove to you that I would. While I don’t have any prior electrical or construction related experience, I am a clean slate with no bad habits. You can also see that I’m a great, hardworking, and reliable employee because in every job that I’ve had, within a short time, I was promoted to a position of leadership.”
      My resume was basically my proof.
      I hope that makes sense! I’ll probably make a video about this. Also, I’m planning on making a website soon where maybe I’ll post my original cover letter and resume so that people can use them as an example. But for now, if you reach out to me on my Instagram then I’d be happy to send it to you. Or shoot me an email (stephen.madrosen@gmail.com)
      Great question!

      Hey, Jeremy!
      You can definitely apply to multiple different locations to try to increase your chances of getting in. You might not to take multiple aptitude tests though because I think your score might stay the same for 6 months no matter what. I'm not 100% sure on that though. But yes, you can apply to as many locals as you want and interview for each of them.

    Hey man, great videos. I’ve been binge watching them all. I was introduced to a IBEW Local Union recently and decided to test my luck in this field seeing how I’ve had some experience in high school and a vocational technical school taking trade courses in basic electrical house wiring and electrical engineering 101, then after high school I worked in a electrical supply warehouse for a couple of years as a material handler. My question is, I am 40 years old now, do you think it’s too late for me to begin this process? I am healthy, healthy enough anyways lol Not as fit and young as I used to be but nothing a few nights a week in the gym couldn’t fix. I watched your video on the 3 things you didn’t like about the job. I think I could handle the work but I did have surgery on my left shoulder when I was in my mid 20’s which decreased the range of motion in my arm, I can lift my right arm higher than my left will go. Right has more range, and is a beast picking up the slack from the left lol so the only concern I have is work over head, but I do have strong mental determination and I’m the type to let something kill me before I’d quit and give up. Plus, over the years I’ve adapted to finding ways around issues having to do tasks different ways then others to get the job done. Anyways, what’s your thoughts about my age and working through to 60 or 65?

    • @wfrencher80
      @wfrencher80 Год назад +3

      Hey Micheal, let me just start by saying that you're not too old to join the apprenticeship. I'm currently 38 years old and I became a journeyman electrician in 2020. I've been in the trade for 8 years, so I started when i was 30. During my apprenticeship I knew guys who were in their 40s who were apprentices, so your age doesn't matter so much. The work can be physical but if your in decent health and you don't mind physical labor you shouldn't have an issue with the work. Your shoulder shouldn't prevent you from doing 99 percent of the work we do. It's a good trade to be in man. I'm in local 58 in Detroit and our pay now is $48.52, and will increase to $51.52 next year. So that's 6 figures gross income on a 40 hour week, and we also get benefits. I personally love my job. When I graduated from high school in 2002 I went to the University of Michigan to major in Mechanical Engineering. But college wasn't for me and I dropped out after 6 years of college. It took many years and I worked many jobs before I got into the electrical field. But being an electrician is the most fulfilling career I've had. I don't plan on ever fully retiring from the field, but once Ive worked in the field for a while I plan on teaching. So if you're interested in getting into the apprenticeship where you're at, and I don't know where you're at so every place is different. But what you're hearing on this video will help you have a better chance of getting into your apprenticeship. Let me know if you have any questions. Good luck

    I'm currently preparing for entry/re-interview in Tacoma's local 76. Looking into taking individual classes through local 46 and 76 to both gain practical education and ensure I begin apprenticeship by mid next year. I'm currently earning electrical trainee hours, but honestly not receiving the broad scope education an inside wireman does - I'd like to be able to actually have the education to justify testing into the apprenticeship at the 1000-2000 hours experience level (period 2-3), if that happens to be where I'm at in pure hours.
    Any insights into which courses are "entry level" - i.e. do any of these likely require some pre-requisite knowledge?
    -2020 NEC Update - Part 1
    -2020 NEC update for limited energy
    -Structured Cabling
    -RCW/WAC Review
    -Transformer Installations
    Thanks for starting an excellent channel.

    • @MadElectrician
      @MadElectrician  3 года назад +1

      Hey Aaron! Sorry for the delayed response.
      Right on, it’s great to hear that you’re committed to getting in even if it means interviewing again. Lots of people have to go through the process multiple times before making it in.
      As far as those classes go, here are my thoughts:
      2020 NEC update Part 1 and the update for limited energy might both be just covering the 2020 changes and not actually teaching the code in much depth. You’ll have a good understanding of the new changes; however, you might not completely understand all of the changes without having a foundational understanding of basic code already.
      The Structured Cabling and RCW/ WAC review are probably more focused on low voltage wiring, which is fine if you want to get into the program as a low voltage electrician, but if you want to do the full inside wireman program then I don’t know if you would find much use from those classes.
      The Transformer Instillations class could actually be really cool. I would try to find out whether they teach you transformer theory or if it’s just learning about the physical instillations. Either way, it would probably be a good one. I would definitely try to find out if you would be expected to know any theory beforehand though.
      I would suggest to try calling the school and finding out some of that information directly from them if you can just to be positive.
      I’m not sure if that’s much help, but hopefully it offers a little bit of guidance.
      Feel free to reach out with any more questions 👍🏼⚡️

    Is it true that Acceptance rates among Applicants for Apprentices can get as low as 1 percent?
    I've read somewhere that in NYC less than 1% of applicants get to be Electrician apprentices.

    • @MadElectrician
      @MadElectrician  3 года назад +11

      Hey Elliott.
      Wow, that’s a pretty daunting statistic. I haven’t personally heard that, though I can personally attest to how difficult it can be to get into the program. Here at Local 48 we have thousands of people apply every year and generally only bring in somewhere around 200 a year depending on how many apprentices are needed.
      That being said, here’s what I also know.
      Tons of people apply for the apprenticeship who aren’t really serious about getting in. Out of the thousands of people who apply, many are weeded out in the aptitude test if they don’t pass. Then of course, even more are weeded out in the interview. Lastly, if your local has a boot camp, there might be a few who don’t make it through that either. Here’s the point I want to make though, if you are serious about getting in and you know that this is absolutely the career that you want to pursue, then you will make it in.
      So many people give up after failing their first aptitude test or after not passing their first interview. In many cases it takes people multiple tries to get accepted. It’s very common. Also, a lot of people don’t put much effort into getting their portfolios looking good before interviewing. They kind of just show up with a “I’m going to wing this” mentality, and I guarantee you that they won’t get in if that’s their strategy.
      So basically, just be prepared to put in the work beforehand to make yourself the best possible me applicant you can be. Be ready for your aptitude test and confident when you get to your interview, having your portfolio in order and ready to impress. Also know that you may need to interview a second or third time if you don’t get in the first time. If you are committed to getting in, then you absolutely will. They want the best of the best so you just need to make sure you give them that with the effort you put into getting accepted. ⚡️

    • @MadElectrician
      @MadElectrician  3 года назад +1

      Hey Kershaw!
      Good timing with this comment! I was just checking comments 😂
      That’s a good plan if they aren’t accepting for the inside wireman program. I do know people who have made that switch and they are happy that they eventually did. You’ll still need to interview but it’s pretty likely that you’ll be able to make the switch at some point. Also I would recommend to try to make the switch as soon as you can so that you’re apprenticeship won’t be delayed.
      That’s all really great stuff to learn, even for an inside wireman. I’ve done a ton of fire alarm since I started which is nice because a lot of people never get to do that. Hey Matt!
      I think that's a great idea! Not only will it help you stand out and show that you're genuinely interested in the trade, but it will also give you a head start on your schooling because you'll hopefully end up already having a basic understanding of some of the concepts that you'll be learning.

    Hello, here in pdx. I’m having a hard time finding a material handlers job ( yes on the books/looking on Craigslist) and no one is accepting volunteers due to COVID. I took an electrical 101 class at pcc and I’m looking at taking some video lessons with the rebuilding center. I’m a female with no construction experience, and I feel stuck because I can’t build my experience any higher than classes because I can’t get a call back from jobs(even tho they state entry level/no experience needed) I’m wanting to apply for the residential apprenticeship and I’m wondering if u had thoughts on it being less competitive than the inside? Thanks!

    • @zacharyfarrell949
      @zacharyfarrell949 3 года назад

      You could make the agreement that it's less competitive because fewer people apply. However they only take in 20 or so applicants a year I believe.
      Don't be discouraged, it sounds like you're doing everything you can. Keep looking for material handler positions and opportunities to gain experience. All of your efforts are going to be so relevant during your interview and will speak volumes. Good luck and don't quit!

    Hey Stephen, how would you go about this process if you are a recent graduate from high school. i just graduated high school in 2020 and have some construction experience but not as much experience as other guys applying for the apprenticeship.

    • @zacharyfarrell949
      @zacharyfarrell949 3 года назад +1

      Keep gaining as much experience as you can between now and when you interview. Take photos of your work. If your construction experience isn't directly related to electrical. Maybe start a project that is and have photos of that to include in your resume. Then when it comes time to interview. Be ready to highlight that experience. I think being as young as you are they're not going to expect you to have years of experience. So your goal in the interview would be to explain why this is the career for you. Learn some trade related terms and try to use them during your interview. Good luck!

    • @MadElectrician
      @MadElectrician  3 года назад +4

      I think that math is the main thing they are looking at. That and also just your grades in general to get an idea of what type of student you were. They also know that a lot of people are better students now compared to when they were in high school, so I don’t think you should stress it too much. The Alliance math course is a great idea if you need to get that math requirement to apply.

      It’s my pleasure!
      The Inside program is going to be the full on electrician apprenticeship program. Upon completion of the inside program you will receive a license to do any type of electrical work. For Residential and Energy A, those will both be limited licenses and won’t allow you to do electrical work other than specifically that. When you think of an electrician you’re probably thinking of an inside electrician which is what I and most electricians are. Hope that helps!

    Do you think telling them during the interview that I don't have experience with tools would be a bad thing? I figured that if I don't have experience with tools that I could learn the right and proper way to use those tools during training as an apprentice.

    • @zacharyfarrell949
      @zacharyfarrell949 3 года назад +2

      I would focus on your strengths. You have just under 10 minutes to make an impression. And prove that you have the proper skills and attitude for the trade.
      It's great that you're identifying weaknesses now though. If anything make a list of what you want to learn or practice before the interview. Watch youtube videos, read books, pick-up a hobby or project that applies to the trade, take pictures and include them in your resume.
      But I wouldn't mention any areas that need improvement. Unless asked directly. Sell yourself!

      Nah, I don’t think it’s necessary. I think even if you do get a company rig that you won’t need a CDL. You’ll most likely just need to do some sort of training through your company but that will be after you start the apprenticeship.
      As far as other types of heavy machinery go like forklifts, scissor lifts, gradalls, etc, you’ll just have on the job training for those or they might even be a part of your boot camp. We had training for those in my boot camp. You won’t need a CDL for those either though.
