Now its just a waiting game for an appointment to get officially indentured and go to orientation. The 5 years begins and I couldnt be happier. Also as a side note to anyone reading this. If they have a CW/CE program, i recommend it, it is a good way to get your foot in the door to the local, gain OJT experience and in my locals' pre apprenticeship requirements, you needed 80 hrs and to be sworn in to the local. In my local your cw hours count towards your 1st year apprenticeship hours and your first pay bump. I came across your videos a few months ago when I was preparing for the aptitude test, and I just want to say that I appreciate what you are doing. I unfortunately didn't pass my first go around and I am going to retest in January. I have decided that this is what I want to do with my future. Thank you for making these videos, and I always look forward to a new one. I am commenting before I watch the whole video, but are you still in your apprenticeship? I don't think I've ever heard you mention it.
Hey man! Thanks for reaching out! It’s my absolute pleasure. I’ve been having a good time making these and I’m happy to share what I know. It’s an awesome career and I’m glad to hear that you’re pursuing this. Yeah, as of right now I’m just about to finish 6th term of my apprenticeship. I’ll be turned out in probably a year and a half or so. Your apprenticeship will fly by. It’s pretty crazy. Do you mind me asking what part of the test you had trouble with? Do you think that the information I provided in the aptitude test was enough for you to be well informed for the test? I appreciate your feedback!
@@MadElectrician I really struggled with the math portion. At the time of taking the aptitude test, I was out of a classroom for over 10 years and hadn't practiced anything but simple math in that time. I started studying really hard when I get a test date. Most of the information that I could find on the test wasn't very insightful, but yes, your videos seemed to illuminate more of what to expect than everyone else's. The minimum score required for an interview was 5/9 and I scored a 4/9...boo! LOL. I will be better prepared next time. My only concern moving forward with the apprenticeship, if I am selected, is the boot camp. As I currently work full time it is going to be difficult to be able to request off or have time off from work.
Man, so close! Sorry to hear that. You’ll definitely get it next time though. Right on, that’s good to hear. If I were you I would actually just make sure to be done with your current job before you start your bootcamp because as long as you don’t make any of the common sense mistakes I mentioned in the video then you’ll start your apprenticeship right after you finish boot camp and you’ll be dispatched to a job. Missing out on that pay for two weeks is rough but it’s honestly a small sacrifice compared to what an incredible career you’ll be starting and the pay you’ll eventually be receiving. I remember that being rough for me too. I meant to actually mention that in my video. If I were you I’d just start setting aside some money now so that when the times comes it won’t be too difficult to miss out on those two weeks of work. Also, make sure to confirm that your local union does the two week boot camp model. Most of them do but I’m finding out that not every local does.
thank you for taking your time release these videos. I’m still 17 but soon graduating and I’m really interested in becoming an electrician but I gotta show the IBEW that I’m capable for it.
Just stumbled across your channel.. I'm always fascinated by other locals and how their apprenticeships operate.. I'm from Local 1077 in Louisiana, right next door to New Orleans.. we have interviews but no boot camp.. boot camp idea is awesome bc you have an understanding of what to do when you start your first job.. we pay for all of our books, tools, and classes.. which we have a smaller local, and alot of people just end up quitting.. kids these days are lazy and want shit handed to them.. my first year there was like 30 apprentices and by my 5th year it was just me and another guy, and we were both older (28&30).. I've been a JW for 3 years now and it's still the same kind thing.. alot of ppl start but only a few make it to Journeyman Wireman..
Thank you very much, your videos have guided me and given me so much information, scored highest possible score for the aptitude test, interviewed last week, and I get swore into my local next Friday,
@@BukAllen0o0 i made 10 portfolios to give to all 10 of the board members that interviewed me, 4 letters of recommendation from people in the trade or similar trades, cover letter, and resume, they asked weird questions and I answered them thoroughly, then at the end they asked if I had any questions, I asked what inspired them to be in this industry , It seemed like it worked good for me, maybe I just timed everything out right but I started working a week after my interview, I’m now on my third week
How do they expect a full-time, working adult to go unpaid for 2 weeks? Something about this doesn't add up especially if I'm a working parent. Not getting paid for half a month goes against me?
It would be really cool if you did some videos about your current position and what you do as a “hospital sustaining” electrician. Maybe you have and I just haven’t seen them. Some of us don’t use Instagram…

Hi there. 37 year old that will be applying for apprenticeship as soon as I can (first Monday of the month only). I am a self learner. I've had a passion for auto repair for the past few years, which also included me reading a 1600 page academic automotive repair book (almost read it twice now). This has just been a passionate hobby that I was thinking about making a profession because I find it very enjoyable. This is also how I've learned a good amount about electrical, albeit in a 12 volt mostly DC system, but it does a good job of explaining the basics of what electricity is, how circuits function, ohm's law, etc. Then there's switches, solenoids, diodes, etc etc. I think this base knowledge will help me, but I'm curious if you could recommend any books that will either enhance my base knowledge of electrical theory, or expand upon it from an electrician's functions in a job setting. Having as much knowledge and learning from the beginning, before the actual classes they will have me do, will give me the confidence that I like having when walking into something intimidating like this. I have no qualms with spending a little money on books out of my own pocket.
I know the union mentions "no experience needed" but I have literally never done anything like electrical work. How do you perform to their standards when you're going in their with guys who have been doing this most of their lives?
I’m going to apply for the IBEW program for next July and you’ve helped a lot with answering and thoroughly breaking down all the questions I’ve had, I just want to say thanks. Also I wanted to ask do you recommend doing homework or studying in a group with your classmates who are in boot camp with you
Hey Light Shadow! They unfortunately don’t pay you during boot camp. You’ll want to make sure that you’re financially ready for that (if your local even does boot camp). It was only two weeks here at 48 and I knew to expect that so I was prepared.
do i have to bring a backpack? can i bring a backpack? do i have to bring a laptop? can i voice record the lecture? am i allowed to take notes during lecture?
Whoops deleted my comment by accident. Not sure how that happened LOL but thanks for all your help! If I get into the program I will definitely make some videos. When and if that happens I’ll reach back out so you can check them out if you want!
Nice 😂 Right on man! Maybe some vlog style videos documenting your journey through the apprenticeship would be cool. We need more people to be aware of this so you making videos too would be great!
Love the videos man! Waiting on my interview at the moment, don't wanna get ahead of myself but roughly how long after you get accepted would you do your boot camp? As someone currently at a full time job I'm trying to figure out how to get away with taking two weeks off for the bootcamp before I officially leave my other job. Thanks for all the info!
Thanks for the advice! A few questions. Regarding the tools, would it be beneficial to let the panel know I have all of the tools required already? ( I buy a tool a week and have an arsenal now. All are Milwaukee and Klein!) If I were to get in the union but then leave years later would I have to return said tools they have provided? Regarding IBEWs policy on marijuana, do you think this will change if it becomes federally legal and can test like they do with alcohol? I'd much rather work with someone who smoked the night before rather than someone that got hammered. Do you think it's fair and or right for a company telling you what you can and cannot do on your off time? PS 7 days sober off weed. prepping for the drug test in a month or 2 (CA resident so... ya know.. its legal here.
Hey bro! I just responded to a similar comment that you left on another one of my videos. I appreciate you watching so many and hope you’re enjoying them! I love that idea about buying a tool a week. It’s a very attainable goal and a great way to start. Quality is really important, so I’m really glad to hear that you’re buying milwaukee and Klein! If you get accepted into the apprenticeship through the IBEW, there is a chance that you might get a free set of tools supplied by the training center. Not every local does that, but mine did. If that happens then you’ll basically just have a back up set for at home which is a good idea anyways. I think that if you started with IBEW and quit before finishing your apprenticeship, you might have to pay something to the training center, but I’m not positive about that. If you finished your apprenticeship and quit later in your career then you would definitely keep your tools. Either way they are yours to keep. They’re not loaner tools. My personal opinions on weed doesn’t matter so much, but I understand what you’re saying. It’s legal here too (in Oregon) and it’s something that is still not allowed as a union member. I’m not positive, but they might be something that’s just standard for the trades even if you aren’t union. Maybe someone will read this comment and prove me wrong because I’m not positive about that. I think that if it became federally legal that could potentially change.
Hey brother so depending on what local you are going in with in CA they might give tools they might not. It's all dependent on the state funding my bootcamp we didn't get tools but the bootcamp before and after us did. So its all just luck of the draw. No need to give out that information to the panel tho. Whatever the union gives you take it man. Amd to answer your question about. I tried taking a quick look in the bylaws but it's too large to go through it thoroughly but it says that if you leave the apprenticeship during or within 5 years of you become vested with the union to work somewhere else doing electrical work you will have to pay back the money for the schooling. Unless you leave for another union then you're good. And brother it's not that hard to give up the weed. What's more important weed or building a future giving yourself financial independence and securing a wonderful retirement where you'll be making 100k a year being retired. I choose building the future
If they're giving you tools you should accept them, and keep yours at home because you'll probably lose some or they get damaged. I wouldn't lie about it if asked however, they'll appreciate honesty. As far as the drug testing policy, here in Michigan it is recreational and its still prohibited for many jobs not just the ibew. They told us that they have to have it that way because many contractors require a drug test before working. If you think about it though, you will be working with very dangerous tool and equipment, you want yourself and everyone around you to be in the right sober mind because your lives are at steak They don't accept medical cards either. Maybe in the future it will change but it will be a few years before that happens.
late to the comment section, but I’m seriously thinking about joining the IBEW. but I’m a non union 2nd year apprentice. can I finish my apprenticeship, journey out, and then join, or would I have to complete the IBEW apprenticeship regardless?
Hey man, any advice on what to study or familiarize myself with before bootcamp? Is there any videos online i should be watching? Like studying series/parallell/complex circuits? Watching electricians wire up switches and lights and stuff?
Hey man thanks for these videos, I had my interview today and think I did really well. Said I should have my rank and score by early next week in the mail. I applied for the Sound and Comm program out of Local 100. Curious if with your class did you have people for different programs all in one or do you know if the sound and comm side have their own specific boot camp? Reason why this question comes up is I know some of the stuff like pipe bending inst really used much on the telecom side so not sure if it still things they will want to train you on? Thanks again!
Hey Benjamin! That’s a great question. At local 48 they do actually separate the inside electricians from the low voltage electricians for their boot camps. Our training center gives us free tools, and they got different tools than us too. I do believe they actually learned how to bend pipe in boot camp, but you’re right, out in the field low voltage techs don’t typically bend their own pipe. I’m not exactly sure how much of the same stuff they learn as us in the inside program, but I believe that they still learn a decent amount of the same theory. Hope that helps!
Huh, the union hall I'm starting at doesn't have boot camp. I'm going in for orientation next week and then I'm gonna start working with class being twice a month. I do have about 2000 of experience goin in, so I know if that had anything to do with it.
I have a lot of love for you and I’ve only found your channel two hours ago. Blessings bro. Quick question if you this, I was thinking of taking this year electrical vocational course at a trade school. Should I do this before applying to a union apprenticeship? I just turned 22 in March been out of high school since 2017-2018 and I don’t want to lose out anymore valuable time. I’m pretty quiet and socially( at least I think) a little bit weird. I feel like doing that course can give me an edge. In Miami Florida btw. Thanks again.
Can you listen to music or podcasts on the job at all? That would be a huge selling point for me. Strangely enough. I realize as an apprentice this is not likely as you are learning so much. But I'm saying once you are a full blown electrition. If my days could be filled with listening to books and podcasts it would be a huge plus. A career is how you will spend most of your life. And if I can keep that life entertaining that would be a huge plus. As long as you're responsible and do a good job first and foremost of course. Or is that unrealistic?
Hey man, great question! It can be kind of situational depending on when you can or can’t, but for the most part I’d say yes. Even plenty of apprentices listen to music/ podcasts throughout their day. Some general contractors might have a job site rule where they don’t want you to, but it’s not often that you see that. So nope, that’s not too unrealistic at all. 👍🏼
Should I take a position as CW/CE with a union company while I wait to apply for the apprenticeship? Im currently at a non union electrical contractor and its very lax where I am.
Hey Will! Most Locals do random drug tests every once and a while so I’d definitely expect to be tested randomly every now and again. At least that’s how it works right now with the current laws.
Is this boot camp the apprenticeship readiness program? I am applying for my local IBEW and havent taken the interview but they said I can take a 3 week unpaid course and get tools at the end. I assume this is what youre talking about?
Hey Bartek! Yes, the people who got kicked out in my class had multiple warnings before they eventually got the boot. They genuinely want people to succeed and make it, but if they don’t seem to be putting in the effort, especially after being warned multiple times, that’s when they decide to give someone else an opportunity to get in who seems to want it more.
Thanks for the quick reply and the info! I am from Canada and in the application process for the IBEW here. Currently at the interview stage, fingers crossed! But looking to go all the way and get as much info as possible.
Can you clarify..? Do you not get paid for the 2 weeks of boot camp..? Because you said that the painter didn't want to take the pay cut, but at the same time you said he didn't want to not get paid for 2 weeks...
Hey Kevin! I don’t think most locals pay you while you are going to the boot camp classes. It’s definitely something that’s good to be aware of so that you can plan to not be working for a couple of weeks prior to starting your apprenticeship. When you start your actual apprenticeship you’ll end up probably either having day or night classes. If you have night school then you won’t really need to worry about any sort of pay cut. Day school though would mean that you’d miss out on a days worth of pay when you are at school that day. Kind of like missing work when going to college. Same kind of idea. I cover that and a lot of other details concerning how the pay works in my “How Much Do Electricians Make” video. Hope that helps!
Hey man, good question. That’s the only one we had during the application process before becoming an apprentice. Once you start the apprenticeship and even afterwards when you are a journeyman there are actually random drug tests every so often that you’ll need to take. At least that’s the way that it is here in Local 48. I’m pretty sure that’s a standard for every local though.
@@jonathanpalos2560 says they take 18 every class. But I thought it was a good rank and also considering this guy got in the 60’s and got in pretty fast. He’s in the same local ibew 48 as I am waiting to get in to
@@allgoprovids6846 in my local I got ranked 31 and I’m probably gunna have to wait 2 years to get in unfortunately so I’ll be interviewing again after my 6 months have passed. Maybe your local takes more classes every year? It’s all depending on if people drop out also then you’ll get bumped into a better rank
@@jonathanpalos2560 yeah I believe they take classes based on work. I’ve heard it could be 18 every month. And this guy getting 60th and getting in after a few months gives me a good amount of hope. But damn up here rank 30 is a great rank to get
if it's the way our ranking works, you placed near the top, expect to hear your start date soon. they gave me about 2 months notice when i got my start date. this is all to say that different locals may do things differently!
Good question! It took about 3 months for me to apply, take my aptitude test, and then interview. Then after I got my rank on the list I started the apprenticeship 3 months after that. All in all it was about a 6 month process for me.
Mad Electrician Ok! Good to know, I have my aptitude test this Friday and just want to thank you for all the videos that you’ve made it has been so helpful for me to prepare for the steps to come!
Mad Electrician yes! 2nd year is only 9 weeks of school. I’m actually not in the local yet! But I am well informed of the whole 5 year apprenticeship process. I’m really hoping I can join early next year!
Wow, crazy! Do you have any idea how apprentices can afford that? Nice man! Is that when they will be accepting applications or have you already applied?
Mad Electrician you start getting paid after the first 11 weeks of the first year. Yeah I know it sucks to be without pay for so long, but I bet it’s worth it in the long run. I have a few cousins that been in the local for several years and all they do is talk great about it. And yes unfortunately cause of COVID-19 there’s no registration right now. I got in contact with the hall and they said they will open up registration back up early next year.
Oh, gotcha. I’m sure it is well worth it. That’s something that I always try to make sure that people understand. You may not make a ton in the beginning but in the end you’ll have a fantastic career with great benefits and pay. That’s the same deal here with COVID stuff. Good to hear man! Well I’m wishing you the best of luck in your electrical endeavors! Keep in touch, I’d love to hear how the process is going once things start up again 👍🏼
Hey Carlos! Unfortunately not. It’s definitely something where you’ll want to make sure that you’re financially prepared for that. It’s one of those small sacrifices that will be well worth it though once you start the program.
@@MadElectrician perfect thank you so much. I’m currently in Los Angeles working as an apprentice rod buster, but definitely switching over to electrician, under the ETI.
What local is this in?? Must be a bigger one. This is nothing like our boot camp. We use our boot camp for organized guys who are behind in education not to get into our apprenticeship. As far as the apprenticeship your either accepted or your not. And we certainly don't give out any free tools.
Not at our local, so it’s definitely something to be financially prepared for. Not every local has boot camp though, so it’s best to find out from your local training center if this is even something that you will need to prepare for.
Hey, great question! Typically you won't know when a drug test will happen because they usually do them at random. You can expect a drug test when you first get into the program and then (based off of my experience) you can expect a random drug test around once a year. If they suspect for any reason that a drug test is necessary then they might also have you take one for that reason too. This answer of course is based off of my experience with how things are here at Local 48. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching! ⚡️
Hey Britt! No, you unfortunately don’t get paid for bootcamp. At least that’s how they do it at my local, but I’m assuming that it’s the same way for other locals. I have heard that some locals don’t even have boot camps though. Definitely something to look into and confirm with your local. If you do have it, then it’s just something to be aware of and prepare so that it’s not too big of a financial strain. I was able to use unused vacation time from my previous job to help me and my wife get through that two weeks of boot camp.
Anytime! There weren’t any in my boot camp but I do have a couple of women in my class at school now and I’ve also worked alongside many fantastic women since I’ve been doing this. It’s becoming much more common to have women in the trade which is great. Our local actually really pushes to bring more women into the trade.
My local ibew doesn’t cover books or the course but it’s affordable. $500-$700 a semester. For you college goers, you might be thinking of semesters as in 17 weeks, but semesters are actually six months, at least in UT.
I really don’t think it’s this serious friends in the comments. I’m a commercial electrician and most people I work with are really rough around the edge individuals with criminal records.
It sounds like by that comment they'll take literally anybody nowdays, because they're in high demand yes? But how can that be true when just any ole person doesn't have the brains to get through it all?
Good Ole Oregon lol yell still haven't tanked but let's see after this year how yalls economy are doing Roosevelt spoke against yall but kept yelling alive throughout his presidential run and Kennedy literally saved the union but those right to work laws still kick yall in the ass
Training and selection is biased + something really cool kids if you're in VA enjoy sitting on the books till you're a journey man and can travel since the agenda is clearly hidden or just not discussed cause of ignorance failure to pay attention to surroundings which is bad considering to be a true electrician that's most important . Or this guy is just trying to build his local for them good Ole boy aka Jim crow benefits 🙄

Thank you! Very valuable information. Please keep creating content.
You're very welcome, Christian!
I appreciate you taking the time to watch and I definitely plan on doing so! ⚡️
Thanks for the videos just got my grade for my interview! On the POE
Thank you very much, your videos have guided me and given me so much information, scored highest possible score for the aptitude test, interviewed last week, and I get swore into my local next Friday,
Any helpful tips on the interview?
@@BukAllen0o0 i made 10 portfolios to give to all 10 of the board members that interviewed me, 4 letters of recommendation from people in the trade or similar trades, cover letter, and resume, they asked weird questions and I answered them thoroughly, then at the end they asked if I had any questions, I asked what inspired them to be in this industry , It seemed like it worked good for me, maybe I just timed everything out right but I started working a week after my interview, I’m now on my third week
Truly grateful for this information. Thank you, Steven!
I’m taking notes, thank you

Thanks man!
Are you currently going through the application process right now?
Our boot camp is part virtual and part hands on. We have to buy our own tools and pay $200 a year for books. This is for local 665.
You are awesome man.
Thanks! Glad you’re enjoying the content! ⚡️
Also I wanted to ask do you recommend doing homework or studying in a group with your classmates who are in boot camp with you
Do they pay you during the boot camp? I'm really excited 😺
Hey Light Shadow! They unfortunately don’t pay you during boot camp. You’ll want to make sure that you’re financially ready for that (if your local even does boot camp). It was only two weeks here at 48 and I knew to expect that so I was prepared.
Thanks for the videos. I got my interview coming soon. So excited for this!
do i have to bring a backpack? can i bring a backpack? do i have to bring a laptop? can i voice record the lecture? am i allowed to take notes during lecture?
Whoops deleted my comment by accident. Not sure how that happened LOL but thanks for all your help! If I get into the program I will definitely make some videos. When and if that happens I’ll reach back out so you can check them out if you want!
Nice 😂
Right on man!
How are the job sites? Should I take a nice car to a job site?
late to the comment section, but I’m seriously thinking about joining the IBEW. but I’m a non union 2nd year apprentice. can I finish my apprenticeship, journey out, and then join, or would I have to complete the IBEW apprenticeship regardless?
Hey man, any advice on what to study or familiarize myself with before bootcamp? Is there any videos online i should be watching? Like studying series/parallell/complex circuits? Watching electricians wire up switches and lights and stuff?
Before they administer the drug test, do they ask if you are on any medications that could impact results?
I’m not exactly sure how much of the same
stuff they learn as us in the inside program, but I believe that they still learn a decent amount of the same theory.
Hope that helps!
What kind of question did they ask you for your interview .
Huh, the union hall I'm starting at doesn't have boot camp. I'm going in for orientation next week and then I'm gonna start working with class being twice a month. I do have about 2000 of experience goin in, so I know if that had anything to do with it.
2 weeks is crazy my bootcamp is 11 weeks
Is there a specific attire you need to take to the first day, or will that be addressed at orientation?
Push the grid to its limits. I take it for granted with electric resistance heat.
@@MadElectrician thanks for the reply! And thank you for your videos man. They've been very helpful.
No problem! I’m glad to hear that! Hit me up with any more questions you have as you think of them 👍🏼
@@MadElectrician will do. Thanks again 👍.
just curious... is the two week bootcamp included in "week 1" classes or is that begins?
Should I take a position as CW/CE with a union company while I wait to apply for the apprenticeship? Im currently at a non union electrical contractor and its very lax where I am.
Are there additional drug tests after the first one when you get assigned to a contractor?
Hey Will!
Most Locals do random drug tests every once and a while so I’d definitely expect to be tested randomly every now and again. At least that’s how it works right now with the current laws.
How long after boot camp did you start working
Love this!!!
How many apprentices have roughly started up to this half of the year of 2021? Got my ranking back under 200 and was wondering what to expect ?
Is this boot camp the apprenticeship readiness program? I am applying for my local IBEW and havent taken the interview but they said I can take a 3 week unpaid course and get tools at the end. I assume this is what youre talking about?
The ibew I apprenticeship with does not provide tools or books
Will they pay for your hotels, if they are hundreds of miles away?
Does anybody know if they test for cannabis in Canada? specifically Ontario.
I’m not sure unfortunately. I know here they used to in Oregon and they actually don’t anymore. You can definitely call and find out though ⚡️
Prior to kicking you out do they give you warnings or do they just let you go after seeing you failing their requirements several times?
Do they do two piss test, one for health and one drugs? I saw another video from a guy in Cali sayiny he pissed twice.
So this is just for being an inside wireman?
Can you clarify..? Do you not get paid for the 2 weeks of boot camp..? Because you said that the painter didn't want to take the pay cut, but at the same time you said he didn't want to not get paid for 2 weeks...
At local IBEW 48 you don’t get paid during boot camp.
Boot camp? This must be a new thing.
This is actually something that only some locals do. Sometimes they have a different name for it too (basic skills class).
@@MadElectrician fair enough. Didn’t have it in 569. Interesting idea.
It’s sometimes called pre-apprenticeship
Do you get paid while you're going to your classes?
Is the boot camp drug test the only one throughout the process of becoming a journeyman?
Hey man, good question. That’s the only one we had during the application process before becoming an apprentice. Once you start the apprenticeship and even afterwards when you are a journeyman there are actually random drug tests every so often that you’ll need to take. At least that’s the way that it is here in Local 48. I’m pretty sure that’s a standard for every local though.
Nat B 😂 good luck brother!!!
Varies by local.
Hey I had my interview this week and got a rank of #77 for limited electrician program. Is that a good rank?
Not a very desirable rank bro the closer to number 1 the better
Also depends on how many classes your local takes in a year and the size of classes
But damn up here rank 30 is a great rank to get
So I took the test and interview and I received mail giving me a rank of 7 in my zone. What does that mean? How soon will they call for a job?
if it's the way our ranking works, you placed near the top, expect to hear your start date soon. they gave me about 2 months notice when i got my start date. this is all to say that different locals may do things differently!
Wa wondering if the drug test is a urine or hair follicle test? Or both?
Hey I don’t have insta do you have a twitter by chance?
I don’t unfortunately 😕
I’m pretty good about responding to comments pretty quickly though if you have any questions or anything on here.
From aptitude to boot camp how long did the process take you?
Good question! It took about 3 months for me to apply, take my aptitude test, and then interview. Then after I got my rank on the list I started the apprenticeship 3 months after that. All in all it was about a 6 month process for me.
The aptitude test is generally a month after you apply and the interview is usually a month after that.
Mad Electrician Ok! Good to know, I have my aptitude test this Friday and just want to thank you for all the videos that you’ve made it has been so helpful for me to prepare for the steps to come!

Are you getting paid for the boot camp ?
Our local is making us pay for our first tools
Only two week boot camp? That’s not bad at all. Ibew 134 is 11 full non paid weeks
Really?? That’s crazy man! Does that include first term of school or something?
Quick question were you paid during the boot camp??
@@MadElectrician and if I’m not mistaken they have the same boot camp I believe
Right on man! I think that’s a great choice! I’ve never once regretted joining the IBEW ⚡️
@@MadElectrician thank you for the content brother!!! I’m definitely excited and look forward to it!!
What local is this in?? Must be a bigger one. This is nothing like our boot camp. We use our boot camp for organized guys who are behind in education not to get into our apprenticeship. As far as the apprenticeship your either accepted or your not. And we certainly don't give out any free tools.
Is it paid training during boot camp?
Not at our local, so it’s definitely something to be financially prepared for. Not every local has boot camp though, so it’s best to find out from your local training center if this is even something that you will need to prepare for.
@@MadElectrician you are the man, thank you for the reply.
I have narcolepsy, I literally cannot control it. I don't think the IBEW would like a ADA lawsuit for discrimination.
mines on monday and thanks to covid its only 1 day lol
Do you know the drug test is coming? Like you know when it will be?
Hey, great question!
Typically you won't know when a drug test will happen because they usually do them at random. You can expect a drug test when you first get into the program and then (based off of my experience) you can expect a random drug test around once a year. If they suspect for any reason that a drug test is necessary then they might also have you take one for that reason too.
This answer of course is based off of my experience with how things are here at Local 48. Hope that helps!
Thanks for watching! ⚡️
@@MadElectrician Thank you, sir! Do you they send you somewhere for the test?
Did you get tested for color blindness?
Do you get paid for boot camp?
@@MadElectrician Thanks this is extremely helpful. Were there any women in your boot camp? Do you work with women now?
Phx don’t do boot camp
I don’t think my local gives us free tools lol
I get tools but only $250 compared to the $600
Pretty sure that painter had bills to pay and not a real choice on that
Is drug test first day of boot camp? Asking for a friend
In our case the drug test was actually the second to last day of boot camp (day 13). Not sure if this is how every local operates though.
You sound line you haven't really been through the apprenticeship.
Turned out last month ⚡️
Thanks for watching!
Weed? They kick you out for weed?!
The IBEW only wants the best man. Seriously it's not that bad to give up weed.
As of right now. I believe so. There is a growing move to possibly allow it once there are better tests.
You guys are grossly overpaid. Hey don't feel bad, a lot of people think I am overpaid. And I make less than$10,000.00 a year.
Do I need to take Spanish in high school for this
Good question!
No, definitely not necessary. Being bilingual is something that makes you more valuable to your company but it’s not necessary.
Do you get paid for boot camp ?
Do you get paid during bootcamp?
Nope
