  • Gargantua is a 1998 science fiction monster movie directed by Bradford May. It was riding off of the success of Jurassic Park and the Roland Emmerich Godzilla remake but it’s honestly a so bad it’s good CGI / practical effect made for TV film that will make you laugh and lose your mind with how much you will be smiling from the hilariocity of it all.

I totally watch this whole review and was like, “Never heard of it.” Then you get to the kid feeding cheeseballs to the monster seen and I was like, “Oh no! Wait!!! On top of chasing JP2 and Racing to beat Godzilla (1998) it also follows a crazy trend of this big boom in the late 90s of "Made for TV" mini serieses like Peter Benchley's creature (1998) The Beast (1996), The Oddysey (1997), Merlin (1998) kinda ending with Noah's Ark (1999) etc. Honestly you could probably do an episode on the mid/late 90s mini series boom alone! Some real gems in there.

I'm so glad to see this movie being talked about. I still remember it from back in the day when Godzilla (1998) and the Jurassic Park entries out by then where all of the rage. Or like you said, that was the time when monsters movies where all in attention from one another's and it helped cement them even more than what usually it's the case. Shout out to Deep Rising and Mighty Joe Young, of course from so many others.
One amusing fact from Gargantua was that in my home country of Mexico it was put on TV and announced as "Gargantua: El Hijo de Godzilla" which translated means "Gargantua: The Son of Godzilla". So, kid me was excited that this was another Godzilla back then when I was discovering movies from the franchise bit by bit when there was no internet. Either connected to the original japanese or to the 1998 version, it didn't matter to me but that odd marketing did put that in my radar and I never forgot it.

They're literally using the exact same plot line of giant monsters attack human civilization because they're looking for their lost offspring."

I actually remember watching this movie on the Sci Fi channel one day. My dad put it on and said that it reminded of him if Godzilla was a frog lol

FINALLY!!! I’ve been trying to find the name of this movie and anything on it!! Saw this on a thanksgiving vacation as a kid back in 2004 and remembered LOVING IT as a kid! 20 years this had lived rent free in my brain! Lol

Oh god, I haven't thought about this film since I saw it when it premiered (caught it as a kid, did enjoy it but even watching your video I can't remember anything of it aside from knowing that I saw it once).

You should cover the 1997 film Aberration. It’s about mutant geckos in a small rural town in the middle of winter
