Surprisingly agile handling!
Wow. It’s interesting that BMW doesn’t have the same standards (interior lighting, trunk, glovebox, center console) for the X1/X2 as they do for the 2 Series Coupe you also reviewed. I’m assuming this is the case because the X1/X2 are heavily based off of the Mini platform.
Correct. The X1/X2 are nice compact little utility vehicles that can carry a lot of cargo and go through snow and bad roads while providing excellent performance and economy but they are nose heavy and don’t have the sharp handling and precise turn in
of my old 328 wagon. Another thing I noticed when switching to an X1 was the higher road noise. They Mini/BMWs are practical, good performing little cars but don’t have the same level of sophistication as the rear drive based platforms. Unfortunately BMW no longer exports wagons to the US because of the demand for SUVs.

A very well-done and informative presentation. Thanks. I "ordered" an X2 M35i in December with every available package and option but have not yet (4/10/2024) gotten a production order... and may never get the car. My dealer is trying to work allocation slot swaps with other dealers, but I am not particularly encouraged. Obtaining a BMW built to one's own specs from Germany is, it appears, totally different from ordering one built in the US, like my last one, a fully-equipped X3 M40i. Sigh.
Maybe it’s the demand for the M35i. I ordered a 28i in January with all the packages and it was built by early February. It spent a month and a half in Bremerhaven waiting for a ship allocation and is now on its way, but I live in California and traffic through the Panama Canal was down over 30% due to a water shortage for the locks. I’m supposed to have it before the end of this month. My dealer says each dealer in California has to date received one X2 each.
