Agreed with all your points. I find it incredibly strange that someone would complain about getting dropped. Or it's like you said, wrong ride then😂 cuz I go to group rides hoping to get dropped cuz then I at least know I was challenged and failed. Great video Jonathan!

I agree with your comments unless the group ride is posted as a no drop group ride. You obviously have to ride in within your limits and select a group ride that is right for your level as well.

Lol I just started cycling about 8 months ago I get dropped every group ride I go on, but I make it further and further every time.

Really depends on the ride. I have seen a lot of people treat group rides as a race, or purposely push the pace to drop people, and it becomes a real ego thing.
I also have known people getting turned off for that reason. A good club will have sweepers to ride with the weakest rider to ensure someone new to the sport doesn’t get left behind, and in the case of a mechanical doesn’t end up stranded. For many people it is a recreational thing, as well as a social thing.
Wanna race, go race. Want a fast pace do a training ride with your peers. Ultimately club should be letting people know the goals of rides and direct people to the right group.
    Just my two cents.

I just had this experience today. It was a race ride not a group ride. No etiquette. Ive been riding in groups for years but I'm realizing fast race rides aren't for me anymore. I want a group ride. Two abreast, turns out front, consideration for slower riders on long hills, etc. It's not a weeknight road race that im looking for anymore.

I don't do club rides anymore because the coffee stop became too long. It was more like lunch hour for most of the other riders. I come for the workout not the food!!

I do not go group rides because first I work weird hours and have no time and second my time on the bicycle relieves my stress from my daily routine, I go as hard as I can or as easy as I want.

your points are valid and i do agree except for the mechanical drop. Things happen I dont see the need to stop a whole group and wait while fix a flat or what ever went wrong. Fix it and better luck at the next ride. Now a wreck yes stop make sure all is good and then start back up.

I ride 99.9% on my own, its the inly way to train efficiently. However, i LOVE the shoot-out type group rides... the only thing is were i live THERE IS NONE!! Its the exact opposite.... everyone plods about, stops for everything.... waste of time... completely does my head in 🙈🥴🥴😖

I don't ride with other people because I don't care to be on a schedule or start time for one of many other reasons. I have to be in a mood and I just can't get there at 7 or 8am in the morning. I've heard so many people say well I have to get on with more important things later in the day which may be true but for me cycling is about relaxation of the mind and I seem to only get that alone on my time.

Depends on the type of "group" ride. If it is a "social" group ride, nobody gets left behind without their permission.

Also if you wanna get stronger you need to go out with people who can drop you....simple as that...

I like group rides irl more than zwift. They don't go faster by half a watt per kilo than advertised, usually. And the cake is better

I was one of the slowes riders 5 -6 years ago always in the back or coming 36th out 65 riders in races. This last two years and currently I always in the front putting it down ,have a set of KOMs and PRs . Coming in the top 5 . No one can't keep up with me on group rides ,Some riders does quarrel . But they were faster than me . They had no mercy ,even if they had stopped to wait, as soon as I reached up to them . They does say ,no rest for the last man. But now I putting on the pain to them 😂😂. Only if it have new riders in the group ,I does stay in the back and show them some tips. It up to you to become better. Someone told that I have the potential to represent the country , just have to work on my technical skills on the Xc mtb courses.

I insist if I'm not fast enough that the group drops me. I don't like the feeling of holding others back. One time in a group I hit a pothole 5 miles in, and both my tires went flat. I felt embarassed and told them to continue on without me, but they insisted on helping me swap my tubes out, in record time. Very nice people. Ended up being a long great ride where we all smashed it.

It happens to me. I got dropped after a 180° turn. I didn't have the skills to hit that turn correctly, then I was unable to catch the group again. Is true, it takes a lot of technique. If make a mistake in the precise moment, is the kiss of death.

As a newbie cyclist, I would feel intimidated by group rides. I usually ride solo or with a few friends.

  • @waynosfotos

If you are in a 30 to 32+ km/ph average, yep, up to you to hang on, as you are considered competent rider who knows the route and is fit to keep up, flats included. It is a fast lets go ride.
But many group rides are advertised as a "no drop" rides and lets be real it is a "group ride" not a crit race.
But in many of these rides people have to much of a ego and race, or drop riders who flat or just do stupid things. Many of these people in these rides are wanting to be involved in a social event NOT race. Group rides are a great thing, but many people treat them as a show off event and this destroys it for others.

I think rides that drop people and don't wait to regroup are unfriendly and a big part of why cycling is not as popular as it could be. Why do something that makes you feel bad? Is that really why you got better? Different ways of viewing the world. If it is a semi-race, it should advertise as that, not a group ride. Not waiting on a flats is what makes people faster?

I'd like to join a club. You'd think where I live there would be lots of cycling clubs. I live across the river from the White House in the USA. I've googled around and all I see is a few defunct clubs with little activity. But if I find one I'd be leery of joining because I'd be afraid of causing someone to crash riding in a peloton. I'm a little erratic. I've crashed all by myself three times in the last 15 months.

It’s the modern trophy kid mentality Jon. Sounds like these riders writing these letters to the clubs want a warm blanket, hot chocolate, and a comfort pet. You only get better by riding with people faster than you. The snowflake mentality doesn’t cut it in the real world 😁

Shame on you for showing up to these rides and not knowing what you're getting yourself into. Talk to people, ask questions. Other riders will tell you; this is a smash fest or it's a casual ride. HAHA write a letter crying about getting dropped.
