Benji the gamer and Patrick the lawyer have changed the game. As an old school road racing purist, I find their inside knowledge to be embarrassingly phenomenal to the rest of us with decades of experience.

@@fleischliebe430 yes, they've talked about it on podcast. They mostly have done video analysis for the team based on the podcast content Ive heard.

Lanterne Rouge is far far better commentary and look inside than our choices for top broadcast now--especially with GCN+ going away. For some of us the only option now is NBC where much of the commentary seems to be directed at those who might be sitting to watch a race for the first time. It's so so disappointing. "OH NO!" pause pause "IT'S A CRASH" pause pause... awful. Chris Horner's 'Butterfly Effect' albeit a bit of a loose cannon on the deck, is also a far more interesting look inside a race.

Benji is Belgian and the thing about being Belgian is that cycling is so engrained in our culture, even people who don't follow cycling over here know more about the sport and its history than some of the guys racing in the tour. I'm not kidding that my 70 year old mom who doesn't care about sports at all knows more about the history and the tactics than some of the people riding the Tour.

I grew up in WI in the US. WI's Belgium cycling equivalent is that anybody's grandmother can tell you who Brett Favre is and how many times the Packers won the Super Bowl.@@Robalogot

Whilst there's obviously great information to be gained from having former cyclists who did a certain role for a decade or two, maybe one who did multiple roles their career even more so, I think analysts who have the experience who can watch sprint trains and ask questions those cycling might not have its important are equally important. Having worked in multi disciplined teams (in IT not cycling) the best and most functional teams that I've worked for are ones where those with other specialisms ask questions I'd never have thought of because I'm too close to what I do and need someone with a completely different perspective. It doesn't always mean they come up with good, alternative solutions but it does in many cases help you to think about a problem in a different way. Just thinking ex or failed pros will have all the answers which seems to be the answer a lot of the time isn't always the best way to go, analytical skills are different, some riders will have these skills so can move into this kind of position after their racing career finishes but many don't.
