The original Obiwan hilt from A New Hope was not machined. It was assembled. There is a man named Roman Gomez who spent years hunting down every single parts that made up the original Obiwan hilt from 1977. It's mostly antique military parts. A sink knob for the pommel. A plane machine gun booster, a Graflex camera clamp. A british grenade that's designed to be shot from a rifle and a plane engine valve for the emitter. After he found every part he decided that he could have exact replicas made of every part. He has a website called Roman Props and I got one of his Obiwan Hilt. They are the closest thing you can get to what Alec Guiness had attached to his belt.

One of my favorite parts of making things or creating a replicate with incomplete or imperfect references is it takes on a personality of itself and imbued with the makers own. The eccentricities end up being the character of the piece and whatever other dings or patinas it picks up. Its no longer a replica of Luke's saber. Its your saber. But that energy and enthusiasm of the goal comes through no matter the abnormalities. I remember my first big cosplay was a mostly redyed Ledger Joker made from thrifted clothes. In actuality it looked nothing like his unless through squinted eyes under muddy water. But everyone said how perfect it was. It was my Joker but everyone could feel exactly what it was intended to be, inaccurate or not. Sometimes the imperfections are what make it fun and meaningful. Geez I really need to build a lightsaber
This just makes me so happy. I've only been making props seriously for the past 5 years, and I am just getting started. I hope to make something this cool to look back on one day!
I also attended that exhibition in the city in 1994. The RoTJ Death Star, ESB models, all the ships, lots of costumes and masks plus story boards. It was a mind blowing exhibit. I took plenty of photos with my new Minolta camera. I need to dig those out of storage.
I saw the exhibit with the 5' Falcon when it came to Chicago. It was absolutely, mind-bendingly stunning. I couldn't believe the emotional response I had to it. I also couldn't believe the incredible, tiny, almost hidden details that you know would never show up on film but just were there because the wizards at ILM's model shop could put them there.
He's probably done it already, but I would LOVE to see Adam design and build his own original lightsaber, not just a replica. In SW lore, building one's saber is a huge creative endeavor as well as a rite of passage, and it would be rad to see what Adam comes up with.
I remember about 1994, I was 10 years old. I used ESB story books to reference Luke’s saber. Many hours in the garage with wooden dowels, PVC pipe, silver spray paint and hot glue.
I saw a replica made with original kit parts in Hollywood at the Dykstraflex restoration event last year (along with Rogue One and the original Star Wars films). The model nearly stole the show from the real feature of the camera working along side it.
First aluminium turning on my Unimat lathe in England in the early 70s was a much less accurate version of a Dr Who sonic screwdriver. Good to see traditions continuing Adam!
Short version: You're proud of what you've created. You're allowed and we approve! Long version: I built a pseudo replica of Jack Sparrow's sword and a wooden crate to house it for a cousin. I'm still proud of it but I know it's far from perfect. He absolutely loves it.
Such a cool story, Adam! It's awesome that Mark Hamill actually held and signed a lightsaber hilt that you created with your own hands! Luke's ROTJ lightsaber is definitely my favorite out of all the movie props, and I have two replicas of it (a Saberforge Prodigal Son that's a bit too big/long dimensions-wise, and a much more accurately sized VadersVault Hero Gen2). I even have a Lego brickbuilt model of the saber hilt.
My friend is a Star Wars collector and got an ILM built replica of the 5 foot Falcon that was on display in a Toys R Us store for a merchandising campaign.
Very cool, Adam! I’m kind of a lightsaber nut. I have a collection of ten “Store Bought” sabers, but I’ve always wanted to build one from scratch. A friend and I had talked about making a couple on his metal lathe, but we never quite got around to it and he passed away unexpectedly a little over a year ago. That’s a memory that I’d really have liked to have shared with him, but unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be (Sorry about the sad stuff there). The closest I’ve ever gotten was as a 10 year old, back in ‘79. I attempted to make a Graflex replica from an old Burgess signal wand (which was actually a knockoff saber). It was all from memory, so it wasn’t/isn’t very accurate (yours looks AWESOME), but I still have it to this day, 41 years later, just for the sentimental value attached to it. Anyways, keep up the great work, Adam! You’ve basically gotten to live out my childhood Dreams (employment wise) and I love your videos, especially the Star Wars related ones. I’ve followed you on Facebook for awhile, but I’ve just subscribed here, so I’ll be looking forward to your future videos. May The Force be with you.
Adam, you might say there's something very pure about your replica. But I'd said there's something very pure about your love for Star Wars, and I completely share it :)
I too have a love for Star Wars, and all things Jedi. My Master Replicas Force FX Luke Skywalker RotJ lightsaber is one of my most prized possessions, and it sits directly below my 16th century Katana. I love Adam's show and tells as much as, if not more than, his builds.
I am now officially old according to Adam Savage, my hero, now I feel old. Thanks for keeping up with the videos Adam! Your an inspiration to us all, watching Mythbusters as a kid led me to be a computer scientist and your love for props and tinkering got me into amateur watch making.
This is so cool!!! One day I want to machine my own lightsaber because I think it would be so cool. Luke's saber is probably the one I would machine if I were to do so.
If you are machining a hilt based on any of the original trilogy hilts then it's basically the only one you can make. All the others were assembled rather than created. Luke's EP 4-5 blue lightsaber is a Graflex camera flash. Obiwan's hilt was an assembly of old antique military parts. Vader's EP 4-5 hilt is also a camera flash but from a different company. His Ep6 one is different because they lost the props after filming Ep5. they converted the Luke hilts to look more like Vader's lightsaber since Luke's hilt was lost when Vader cut his hand.
I love the replica prop universe! I have a Luke ROTJ saber too, (among many others,) and it is one of my prized possessions. The first time I lit it up, it sparked such joy in my heart.
what version do you have. I built a collection of the original trilogy hilts and my Luke ROTJ hilt is the one they sell at Galaxy's edge. I'm going to sell it soon because I got a Korbanth LS Supreme coming this week. It's the most accurate replica of that hilt available.
Oh man, 13 year old me was at that exhibition at the yerba buena center and my mind was blown. I remember there was a playboy pinup taped to the inside of the cockpit of the 5 foot falcon model.
There were no specs no to the micron measurements it was done with reference photos that were estimates of the size and ratio. It took a dedicated eye to make as close as you could replica. Frankly I'd be prouder of this than any etsy bought or orecise plan made prop. There's a dedication in that can't be replicated.
Adam should make a completely custom design based on his preference. I think that could be a very fun episode. And i wonder how his own lightsaber would look
The first prop I made was the DeLorean from Back to The Future, but it wasn't exact. It went back to 1957 instead of 1955, but apart from a few hiccups I was still happy with it.

So great to see Adam's genuine love and enjoyment of his fandoms!
Many hours in the garage with wooden dowels, PVC pipe, silver spray paint and hot glue.
im collecting the kits to built the 5 ft model, ive never seen it, but its stunning
I saw a replica made with original kit parts in Hollywood at the Dykstraflex restoration event last year (along with Rogue One and the original Star Wars films). The model nearly stole the show from the real feature of the camera working along side it.
Thomas Bunce I think I’m friends online with the owner of that model , amazing work
That he made that without the help of the internet and all the resources we have today and still got so close is actually incredible.
Seeing you go through the design and build of a custom lightsaber would be a great ODB!
People like u are the reason i can go to work every day
Thanks for sharing Adam!
Your excitement about everything you do inspires me to make and create things that I am excited about I love your videos keep making them
First aluminium turning on my Unimat lathe in England in the early 70s was a much less accurate version of a Dr Who sonic screwdriver. Good to see traditions continuing Adam!
what a beauty! would LOVE to see all the sabers you have or have made!
I would be okay with Adam for 40 more years. The world needs heroes.
I'd love to have Adam's sort of workshop, be in there all day and still have things to build and replicate. Love it.
Wow! I am blessed to have seen this only 26 seconds after it uploaded! I'm sure it's a great video!
Edit: It was a great video! Thank you for this!
My friend is a Star Wars collector and got an ILM built replica of the 5 foot Falcon that was on display in a Toys R Us store for a merchandising campaign.
This is my favorite lightsaber ever, this is so cool!
There's not a whole lot I can say besides how cool it is and how much I'd love to have or make a lightsaber.
I too have a love for Star Wars, and all things Jedi. My Master Replicas Force FX Luke Skywalker RotJ lightsaber is one of my most prized possessions, and it sits directly below my 16th century Katana. I love Adam's show and tells as much as, if not more than, his builds.
Love the short video, thanks for sharing with us Adam! Prop replicas give us this incredible joy.
OmG! Adam...dude...please. I am typing this ON MY KNEES. Please show-and-tell your saber collection.
I'm not even a Star Wars Nerd but the Mark Hamill story is one of the coolest fuckin stories I've ever heard. Look how big and small the world is.
"I see you have constructed a new lightsaber. Your skills are complete. Indeed you are powerful as the Emperor has foreseen."
I am now officially old according to Adam Savage, my hero, now I feel old. Thanks for keeping up with the videos Adam! Your an inspiration to us all, watching Mythbusters as a kid led me to be a computer scientist and your love for props and tinkering got me into amateur watch making.
I remember that exhibition at Yerba Buena! It absolutely blew my mind to see the detail on all those models.
Only 40 years more with Adam Savage in this world, makes me both sad and happy
A lightsaber prop series would be amazing
When it comes to replicas if you love it and are proud of then its perfect
Adam you are my inspiration. Thank you
This is so cool!!!
I remember there was a playboy pinup taped to the inside of the cockpit of the 5 foot falcon model.
lol at the paint residue and silicone norm left on the saber when he made a mold of it with frank ages ago.
There were no specs no to the micron measurements it was done with reference photos that were estimates of the size and ratio. It took a dedicated eye to make as close as you could replica. Frankly I'd be prouder of this than any etsy bought or orecise plan made prop. There's a dedication in that can't be replicated.
god bless you adam savage. mythbusters was the shit & i just love seeing your creativity flourish elsewhere these days🤘🏼
I'd love to see Adam attempt the awesome mechanism from Rey's yellow lightsaber!
40's a good number. I hope so too for me. Nice lightsabre. Good stories.
you are a legend Adam!
Ok now I want to see your entire lightsaber collection!
Looking forward to the next 40!
Adam should make a completely custom design based on his preference. I think that could be a very fun episode. And i wonder how his own lightsaber would look
0o0 You should do a multi-episode series building a large miniature of the millenium falcon! That would be amazing to watch.
Beautiful story
It is a perfect representation of a true boulder. Your hart is there in the work .
I see Adam as Adam Savage, but not Adam from Mythbuster because his (joyful) smile now is truthfully priceless.
lightsaber's the coolest weapon ever conceived of in the past, present and future
"as long as we're all on the same page". LOL!
The first prop I made was the DeLorean from Back to The Future, but it wasn't exact. It went back to 1957 instead of 1955, but apart from a few hiccups I was still happy with it.
