My older child is in college for CAD design and this type of video could be a required viewing as far as the design and prototyping process. I've forwarded it to them already.
Agreed. I do all kinda of hobbies. I'll micro focus on one thing for a month at a time. Only now, after a couple of years, do I feel comfortable with some of my work
This has to be one of my favorite videos you've done in a while. The collaboration with Bill Doran and the creative process between Bill and Adam was so much fun.
@5:33 "I don't have to be able to picture a full design in my head, i can just keep drawing shapes until something becomes apparent to me. Until like an idea or a theme starts to shake itself loose." As someone who is lacking a bit of direction in life, this really spoke to me.
Just what i was thinking. Adam probably didn't want to say anything even slightly negative after the amazing job he'd done. I bet they came up with something off camera though.
It has wheels. The only way it can passively balance is if its centre of mass is below the axis it pivots from. With the funny camber, this can only be described as "the line between the centre of the plane of each wheel through the centre of its contact patch on the ground". It looks like there's a tiny bit of the body below that, so the model boat trick (lead shot mixed with epoxy poured in) might work. Possibly a better way to make it passively balance would be to add weights which drop down to the inner side of each wheel (or within each wheel) but are rigidly connected to the wheel hubs. This gives you more distance below the axis so you can use less weight to balance it. This also allows the body to be entirely above the axis it pivots on, which makes the illusion of it defying physics a lot more convincing. Then moving the weight forward or backward by adding weight to the afterburner would only make the robot look up or down while balancing, and can't make it balance. Passive balancing would be great, because then it works as a desk model, can be driven around with low acceleration using a regular RC control system or can be driven around fast with an active self-balancing control system.
Adam’s sponsored content is the best there is! They are amazing at choosing “ads” that are interesting for us fans, they always feel honest and the type of contest is always spot on! ❤
I love the interactions between bill and the tested team it was a joy to watch them show norm how to cast and working together like this with Adam is amazing as well also I’d love to be able to get the files for this droid I’d LOVE to add lights and all sorts of different customization
When he said "one day build" sketched it out, and minutes later a full 3D model appeared, I questioned my own modelling skill and life choices. At least they clarified it was 4 days of modelling and printing at 25:22
A one day build often refers to the assembly time, not necessarily the design and planning stages. He wanted to design something that wouldn't take days to assemble like a room scale model would require.
This was probably my favorite Tested video to date! So awesome to see Adam and Bill flex their creative muscles together. As someone who enjoys 3d printing, design, and modeling... I could watch these videos all day!
I love when the universe (and/or Tested) delivers quality "on-time" information... just started learning Fusion a couple months ago and through the frustration has been delivered subtle hints of what the future holds. Then I see this master and it's like meeting the pope after graduating catholic middle-school. Love you guys. Keep it up.
This has a very Trade Federation feel to it. The shell is reminiscent of a battle droid head and the camber of the wheels looks like the Hailfire Droid
I am sure Autodesk is happy with this episode. I first used Autodesk Autocad Version 2 back in the mid 80's for circuit board layouts. I then used almost all of their products over the next 35 years with Fusion becoming my go-to design tool in my retirement years.
@@-danR I worked on 3D engineering software back in the 90's when it was 10x harder than Fusion. I suggest going through a RUclips class but have a project in mind as you are doing it. I focus on the project and then figure out how the software can get me there.
I’ve really come around to the philosophy that Adam talks about where things “reveal” themselves to you throughout the creative process, instead of trying to force something into existence. It’s affected my short story writing in a great way. It’s also fun because it makes it okay to not know the answer when someone asks you something, because it’s almost like the answer is there somewhere but even you, the creator, don’t know. It gives a particular sort of life to a world.
I like planning things out but I have noticed I get good results from either long-term planning, or picking, like, a theme or a couple words or something then trying to follow where that goes, and the latter takes less time.
You what I like about this design is that it looks like some in universe droid engineer/enthusiast took an old battle droid’s head and made a new cute and quirky droid for fun.
I would love to see a little puppetry and lights added to this build to really bring out the personality. What a fun project! Maker tech is amazing these days.
7:15 - I love that as soon as I saw the 3D CAD render, I immediately knew the physical object that the "exhaust pipe" was from. I have that same physical object.
This process was so straight forward coupled with Bill Doran's technically perfect execution in Fusion makes for a satisfying video to watch and learn from. Being a Blender user I'm starting to create models to 3D print from and this video def helps! Thanks Adam and Bill!
amazing timing for me, ive spent all day in Fusion 360 learning how to use it. i just got a CNC, and CAM/CAD is super new to me. very exciting to see it here in such a fun way!
DUDE! You did not just casually design and create like... my favorite thing I've seen you make on this channel!?!? Ok no I did love watching you machine that revolver. But there was something so utterly organic about this creation process it's inspiring. I LOVE that you approached it from this mindset of... well just try things out and see what kind of ideas I get FROM doing that process. It feels so impersonal, so without ego? And yet imbibes the project with so much clear and evident heart and personality. The way this toy is moving around is just genius. Like, I actually *want* one. I want to see 6 of them roving about, too!
You know its good content when you click off at the end of the video with a smile on your face…. Thank your for an amazing childhood and thank you for continuing for continuing into me having my first child(you already know im going to raise her on tested and mythbusters) THANK YOU!!!!
I was expecting a single piece static model but the result was truly impressive, this is one of most incredible videos on the channel, i can imagine a full working prototype made with all tested team like the star field series it would be amazing developing all the parts and fit the electronics in there. For those who wonder how much a 3d print shrinks it depends of the printer itself, the band, the model and the type (if it’s a resin, pla, nylon, etc), but as I’ve measured various models over the years the average shrinking distance it’s 0.02mm, it could seems a trivial thing but on small models and precision tasks like tread a bolt it can be important consider make slightly bigger holes on your model
Quit nicotine simply by staying occupied working on projects thanks to inspiration from Tested & Adam (and of course watching the amazing content they deliver).
It's a treat to see the process of someone who knows how to work within the constraints of 3d printing, the assembly design was just as impressive as the droid's design.
Honestly, looks like the front end of an old tractor, they can have the wheels that tilt in to avoid crushing crops. This is why missions to moon and Mars will certainly have 3-D printers as being able to produce replacement parts or tools will be priceless.
I could see the glimmer in Adams eyes as the ideas started running through his head with printability tricks like print in place, alignment dowels, shadow lines, tabs etc. I feel like maybe well see more CAD from Adam going forth.
Please give us a ODB where you paint and kitbash this guy! I love him and I'd love to see all the little details and story elements Adam adds to his pieces!! Thanks for sharing :)
Having played around with Fusion360 quite a bit for tiny home projects and 3D printing, it's awesome to see it applied to the process from sketch to actual physical model. Turns out I'm doing a lot of things right already, still I love the stuff I learn in your videos Adam! Thanks for the inspiration
This is one of my favourite episodes in a while! Love you both. Great little droid you managed to create in such a short timeframe! And Bill… modeling in CAD is my happy place too!
It looks like a classic tractor! XD Modernized and with the aesthetics of the Star Wars Droids... I imagine it as a Droid that repairs agricultural machines on a peaceful Star Wars planet with large farms! :)

I love this video. Ive been playing with Autodesk Fusion 360 for a few minths and i struggle with figuring out the tolerances. I would love to learn how Bill arrives at his tolerances to get those lovely snap fits. That snap was so satisfying

Submit your own design for a droid at www.autodesk.com/droid !
I don't want to make my own, I just want one (or two...or five...) of Adam's!
Looks like a pristine opportunity for lighting and other effects. Maybe tooling coming out of the hubcaps.
Any chance you will release the 3d files so we can print our own?
@@theHardChargerVids I know it's so adorable I love it. I have a lovely metalic gold I got as a sample that would be perfect for this.

Now make one that fully functional Arduino robot.

It would be cool to have a ballast container in the afterburner so that you could hide washers to get the Droid to balance perfectly
Just what i was thinking. Adam probably didn't want to say anything even slightly negative after the amazing job he'd done. I bet they came up with something off camera though.
@@SoonGone Probably going to drill out the back and fill it with brass rods then cover it with a decorated and painted cap. Quick, easy, hidden.
A 4mm screw would probably do the trick.
