Wow
Great work.... 😊
?
no, I don't think I will

More of this please, I could watch you and Fon build models all day long especially when they end up looking like this. The Frontier from Starfield just pips it of course but this is my second favourite model from a game that you have built, Homeworld rocks!!
Ditto
Seconded!
Thirded!
Hear hear!
Perfect team.. Adam & Fon 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Love to see you and Fon together again!
Thank you, Kyle! Always a very special day to have Fon in the shop.
I got my start model making by assembling paper models from the original Homeworld 1 and 2, after school while watching mythbusters. This feels like coming full circle in a way.
!!!!
You can see that these two spent a lot of time together and that they are true professionals. Although they have two different ways to get the paneling done, they know that they can rely on each other to get it done on time. The builds are super valuable. Watching them I am almost transported back in time. And watching them both at ILM working on a movie prop!
As someone who’s done large 3D models for conventions and a museum under a time-crunch, it’s very humbling (yet enjoyable) to watch two old pros get it done. I’ll echo what others have said, “more of this, please!”
The Vac-U-Form machine was made by Ron Charles & Associates (RC Vac-U-Form) in Wilmette, Illinois (Chicago area), circa 1988 to 1991. I recently inherited the 8 x 11 size machine from my old employer, a St. Louis area professional model shop that just closed. That machine was $450 new in January 1990.
According to the US Inflation Calculator, that's $1,075.36 in today's money. Take care of it!
@@liemyip159 Oh I intend to. I used it all the time when I was working, and find uses for it still. I was quite lucky to get it when the old shop closed, as the machine is so hard to find on the used equipment market.
The 'Deluxe' model allowed for use of 9" x 12" sheet stock; the 'Deluxe XL' was made for 12" x 18" sheet stock, and the 'Supra Deluxe' used 16" x 24".
The 'Deluxe' model measured 24" tall, and the footprint was 13" x 10.5". It weighed about 35 pounds.
I love love LOVE that Adam is excited to learn/try salt chipping. I am in total awe of their focus and ease and familiarity with the entire visualization/build/ paint process. The uber-nerd conversation about vinyl masks and friskets was squeeing-flapping-tastic!
ILM was my childhood dream job. Today, I just build for me and for fun.
I really enjoyed watching this. So fun to see different techniques collide and work together for a final product. Beautiful job gentlemen and lets not forget the videographers and editors, excellent job! Applause for everyone on the team.
Really appreciate your taking the time to let us know ...
Finally more of my favorite content - Adam building space ships! Its really cool to see the changes 3d printing brings to the process compared to the older ship model builds
FIG Backer and Homeworld Fan here! Love to see this! Been 20+ years waiting for HW3. Cool to see some big names appreciating the franchise.
Fig backer here too!
...I can't find my game key, to unlock my copy, and I don't wanna pay for it a second time. T_T
Fig packer number 3 and playing it already.
Though to be honest, I got into the Fig for the reprint of the art book.
@@leonpeters-malone3054 So you got the Art Book Bundle like I did…nice!

This is so inspiring! I did not realize one can use a 3d print base and just add plasticard for paneling! I work at a packaging making plant and I can take scrap home. PVC, PET, PETG, HIPS and others of varying thicknesses. Thank you, Adam and the rest of the Tested crew for showing me a new way to make models!
There are some amazing tutorials and builds in the warhammer community. Just look for warhammer and scratchbuild or kitbash.
He may be an Engineer, but it's moments like this that prove that Adam Savage is an ARTIST! That's why Math, Science, and The Arts are so vital to have together!
I absolutely and totally agree on all aspects of this.
In Sweden, children are actively encouraged to take up the arts at school, especially music. When I was in secondary school (year 7), here in Australia, most schools had music classes, but only a few, like mine, had musical instruments for us to learn. I have always thought that it is a shame that art has always had to take a back seat to Math, Science and English. They should be treated equally from the time a kid enters school until the day they leave.
@@dragonshair 💯👍 two sides of the same coin; complementary tools we humans use to (try to) make sense of the world around us.
I am always amazed when you all talk about a technique I have been using for a long time for my WWII models and I just assume you would know it. The Salt weathering has been a staple of WWII and historical models for a long time. I am glad to see you discover something I just assumed you knew.
Plus the fact Bill Doran used it on helmets etc, I also thought they would have known it
I am lucky enough to be Facebook friends with Fon. He talks about his ILM work pretty frequently, and it's great to see what he is doing now. I can't wait until the next NDA is up!
I love all of the formats, including the raw audio Adam-only builds; but this is great too! More variety!
I’ve 3D printed a negative vaccume forming mold in ABS complete with vent lines, bolt off undercuts, and a tube cooling passage for compressed air to get the extra detail and surface greebles. The porous qualities of FDM make it a fantastic vaccume forming mold process. FYI, don’t use PLA for this, the hot plastic sheet will destroy the mold details almost instantly. Use ABS or PETG to get repeated parts
I love the sparse videos when Fon pops up.
They are like the golden ticket video between al the other good content.
Can’t get enough of this guys energy and has great stories to boot!
I absolutely love the ship designs of Homeworld!
They never fail in this regard.
This is absolutely my favourite type of tested video. I could watch Adam and Fon making space ships till the cows come home. Also as a messy noob of an airbrush user it was very heart-warming to see Fon, an undisputed master with spilt paint all down his airbrush hand!
homeworld ships have always been exeptinaly designed from one to three (and the Cataclisum expansion of 1) every single ship is somebody's favorite starship
HW1 Taiidan destroyers, babyyy
Such a fun and informative build. Thank you for taking us on this journey. I remember my buddy in model railroading using the salt technique to weather bridges, and leaving some salt under the rust coat gave such a neat texture that paint alone just wouldn't convey.
I could watch this being done all day long. I'm sitting here hypnotized throughout thios entire video. Amazing work gents.
I LOVE THIS BUILDER CONTENT. Please do more projects like this in the future!
Fun build. The shop is looking good. Cool to see the legacy ILM - 32Ten parts cabinets in good use.
My now two years ago pre-order collector's edition arrived yesterday and boy did it not disappoint. The Khar-Kushan mother ship model which as internal LEDs is huge, and absolutely gorgeous. I'm framing the lithograph picture that came with it.
Videos with old colleagues are simply a joy to watch.
I loved this so much! I hope to see Fon on here much more, he seems like a super cool dude!
I absolutely love the homeworld games! Seeing Adam putting together a ship from the game is an awesome intersection of worlds for me.
Fructose medium hair spray in a spritz bottle sprayed over an area then sprinkle the crushed rock salt on that. The hair spray makes it easier to work with. using water with salt can leach the salt into the paint or form a crust, which can be useful for certain finishes. The hair spray gives a cleaner finish.
Homeworld designs are like the perfect synthesis of Chris Foss-style coloration and patterning with Star Wars-style functional-feeling mechanical design. Seeing that being built and them gushing about panel notches and putting little details in the gaps is great. I do 3D models and all this stuff makes me go "Yes! I know! These people speak my language!"
Two artists in the same space, working together and creating an object of beauty is such a JOY to watch!
Its so much fun to watch Adam and Fon "nerd out" on these builds. It's weirdly therapuetic to watch two people, who clearly like each other, working on something they are passionate about. Just goes to show, you can make the 13 year old grow old, but you can't always make them grow up. Nice work fellas. Glad to see some of the "old skool kool" for movie model making is still around.
Adam, it is a testament to the expertise of both you and Fon that were able to recreate the Interceptor ship so closely.
Spectacular. Do more!
It was awesome seeing you two work together, please more of this!
Loved Fon so much, hope to see more of him on the future!
Yes! We love Fon.
I got some of the best advice from Fon about 13 years ago. He told me in a video call about all the different kinds of creative art skills I wanted to do and to make props is to be innovative and a production company! Not just a studio. An listen to what the project is saying to you. Thank you, Fon!
You can do the same paint trick with a spray bottle, water drops, sand, and sugar! I found a net trick with fine window screens. Lay a piece over the top of your foam or model paint over it then pull the screen off and it will give a cool 3d effect to your work!
Such a joy to watch 2 awesome geek craftsman having such fun together! I envy you 🙂
Could not possibly care any less about the game, however I could watch Adam build models all day. And Fon Davis? Come on, this is golden.
Fon's SO GREAT.
Great to see you old guys playing together. Thanks for letting us in.
I’d absolutely love to see you guys build more spacecraft!
I absolutely love watching your model building collaborations. The brain storming parts are great to watch. I love that you both had different approaches, but end up with one consistent product. Still don't have a spray paint booth!!!.....come on Adam. Wet salt to give the effect of scraped paint.....genius.
So Amazing to see you all working together to create this beautiful Ship. Adam, Fon, Norm and the rest of the crew, Great Work!!!
Great to see two people having this much fun on a project together.
This is a really special video , wherein we get to see two seasoned professionals performing the art and craft of modelmaking at the highest level. This is legendary content , and I sincerely doubt you'll see such knowledge & skill applied to this kind of work anywhere else.
More please. This is the perfect format for a series.
Also please build a mothership now!
This is pure magic - two legends sharing so much passion and institutional knowledge in a build. More of this please - this type of build is so much fun to watch!
I hope there’s more videos in the future with me Davis. This was fun to watch and the idea ping ponging is a great thing to watch unfold.
When I want to be awed by painting detail - I watch PLASMO do a model. Weathering, scratched finishes, oil streaks, etc. Just crazy detail.
I loved loved this video, bring on the videos with Fon and Adam, absolute Joy both of them
By far these are my favorite videos.
Loved the campaign (got early access by a few days due to backing the crowdfunding campaign). Felt very Homeworld. I'm always envious of your workshop and all the cool projects you get to do! But love learning from the projects you get to work on!
Ive always been a huge fan of the design language from the Homeworld universe.. ever since the original
such a delight to witness 2 masters at work in their craft
I could watch hours of Adam and Fon building and talking it out. Masters of their craft
Getting to paint it nice then add the weathering reminded me of how fine-scale models in 80s and 90s gave me that sense of excitement and dread of screwing it up. And yes shiny can be too shiny, but also the model paints back then would look too uniform and matte/dull for actual rust. My secret was to use actual rust mixed with matte clear enamel or lacquer been so long I forgot which. Anyways in the basement was a glass jar with vinegar, salt and some scrap metal or even crushed tin cans. Once in awhile I'd remove any metal left then slowly drain the jar, refill it with water and let sit overnight to "rinse" the fine rust particles and next day slowly drain most of the water then let it sit to dry. The what was left was a rust cake that easily crumbled into super fine powder. Cost was a few pennies and some time, results on models... priceless. ;)
Adam discovering salt chipping that wargamers have used for ages is so serendipitous full circle considering how many techniques and tools I take away from these videos. Ive always seen it done by spraying hairspray on the model for the salt to adhere to and then a damp toothbrush to knock away the salt and peel up some hairspray. Then a clear coat to lock down your work. But that was always done with kosher salt. The crushed rock salt for more variety is a great idea Im gonna take
Fons reaction when you talked about the perforated plate of your vacuum form machine made my whole day.
Seeing professionals do what they do best is a joy to watch.
We need more of these. Maybe ones that are less time consuming but I very much enjoy watching you two work.
Thats work flow chemistry. Holy, it looks amazing!
One of favorite episodes so far and Love the collab projects! Keep up the amazing work!
What a really amazing build! It's always fun seeing Fon and Adam get to do some old school model making! =)
I can't even explain how cool it was to see these two legends work on a design that is so dear to my heart, from childhood to now. Thank you for making my memories a reality!
(Also, HUGE thank you to the editors for ducking that vacu-forming noise and saving our ears, much obliged!)
Wow! And I just got home to start installing Homeworld 3. I hop on youtube while I wait and see THIS! Today's a good day.
Adam & Fon videos are always great!
So great to see 2 professional model makers at work and having a fun time!
Watching Adam get excited as he builds stuff never gets old.
I can't believe, the perfectionist in you is able to let go certain mistakes, but I guess if under certain time constraints. There's really no such thing as a perfect model. Keep up the amazing work. I love it .
More of these. I love seeing multiple people in the shop working on something. Great length of time also.
Exellent work! If someone want's to make a Homeworld film, they have their first filming minature.
Sanding panels: my eyes are watering at the very thought. Love the x-acto stab-n-place. So many memories.
I love these sort of series. More please!
Wouldn't it be great to see Fon more often on the channel? I'm here for Adam every time, of course, but I used to enjoy seeing Kayte, Mel, Norm and other makers doing their thing more often as well. It's just fun to see accomplished people like Fon and the Tested team making stuff. Especially spacecraft models 😍
Amazing model making movie. The more the merrier! Well done!
Beautiful build! I have been a model builder all my life. Plastic, slot car, radio control. Vacuum forming for the sections was a fantastic idea. Thanks 🎸🔪
One of my favorite so far! Keep up the great work!
We need more of this, love it!
g'day adam , what a wonderful collaberation to whatch , two artists working together , it was wonderful to watch , thans everyone involved
Love how ya two just nerded out
I've been doing salt weathering on model kits, mostly Gundam for years and it's so satisfying!
I'm really suprised that with the decades of combined experience building models that you two have, that you've never heard of/or even used the "salt chipping" technique. Armour modelers in particular have been using it for at least 5 years.
In any event, that is a great looking model. I love how it turned out.
👍👍👍👍
🌟🌟🌟🌟
Many of the paint manufacturers like Tamiya, Mr Colour and AK have actual chipping fluids to accomplish the same visual.
Definitely need more builds like this they are so good thanks again for the great content
Hell yeah, Fon AND a spaceship! Scale model spaceships sponsored by [new sci-fi game/show/movie] are always fun videos.
This was awesome to watch. Loved the little insights and bits of knowledge conveyed in the heat of the process.
This was so fun. I love how working with the vacu-former always feels like trying to grab a feral cat.
The salt trick that Fon describes is something that I learned from Warhammer 40K. Cool to think that there's so much cross-over from what you can learn hobbying and what can be used by professionals.
a pleasure to watch you guys having so much fun building thid model
This was an AMAZING video. Two Absolute masters, and good friends, working together on a SPACESHIP! More of these, More Fon!
I love Homeworld, and it was great to see you guys work on such an amazing model from the game. I really hope when Star Citizen goes Gold, that you're able to give one of their ships the same treatment.
More of this please. I’d love to see you both make ships from scratch, from the same universe but either side of the war, good versus evil and how elements of them being from the same universe would mean they work together
We really had a lot of fun with this build.
Hey there. it is so super cool. I think it's so cool now that you're making models and it's so cool that you have a friend from the old days, I hope you do it again👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
This is amazing!!! Love the process, execution and the final output!!
This video made me happy and tought me a new thing or two.
It is such a pleasure and privilege watching masters at work. Huge inspiration for my own making. Thank you for sharing your gifts.
Fan-Friggin-Tastic! Superb video, and such great techniques on display. Already looking forward to the next model build video. Bring on more!!
I love seeing the old schoolers do what they do. What an entertaining video. This is always what I wanted to see on movie magic back when I was a kid. I make vehicles and stuff in zbrush for an action figure line and this is basically how I do panels. It has to be simplified but same concept.
Really great video thanks so much for the way these are presented/edited.
So cool watching two buddies hang out and have fun. It felt like I was in the cave with them except we didn’t get to hear the war stories and banter I’m sure they were having
