Maybe. I remember the saddest, scariest parts being very affecting. But it's worth noting that if it were a Black Mirror episode, it would never have all the unfunny faffing about that pads the movie and gets in the way of all that. No overlong colour-changing in the car, no farting in the boss's mouth. Just, y'know, the actual good part.

NY native here, so, one instance I was walking home from Grand Street (lower Manhattan) and I had mistakenly walked right through a supposed movie set/scene, I was listening to my mp3 player (late 2000s) and totally had no idea I just barged on set (you all know the movie). Sandler, who was not in make-up/wardrobe catches up with me, totally nice and professional and asked if I knew who he was, if I was a fan, etc. Legit had a 5-10 min convo kicking the shit before asking his PR to leave me in as an extra. I didn't get paid, nor did I ask or wanted to. Long story short, Sandler is a solid, authentic guy, so it always tickles me to see NC shit on his BAD movies because, yeah, I'm sure Sandler would honestly tell you they were garbage too.

*Reign Over Me* is in my opinion one of the best 9/11-related movies ever made specifically BECAUSE it focuses so little on the tragedy itself and more on the aftermath of how it shaped Sandler's character into who he is vs who he was.
It was one of the first films I saw as a child that not only made me understand how serious PTSD & grief are but how it can change and potentially destroy relationships between loved ones. It was eye-opening for my young, innocent self.
I never once laughed at Sandler's character, even when humor was intended, which I previously never thought could happen. That's how heavily his loss and performance hit me. Overall, it's my 100% favorite of his few dramatic roles.

Just shows Sandler can act outside comedy if he can get acting classes to expand his career. He focused too much on comedy that feels he is still stuck with SNL. Him as a professional actor has the potential to be a pretty good actor but just needs someone to help him improve. Many actors and actresses like Sophia Coppola realized shes better behind the camera than in front of it.
And you do have actors and actresses that can excell in different genres like Nichelson back in the day. Many people forget one of his 1st movie roles was the plants 1st victim in the original black and white version of little shop of horrors.

However, when I was on set, my (limited) interactions with Adam Sandler were always very pleasant. Adam Sandler is a perplexing actor in my opinion. When he's good, he's very good. When he's bad, he's god awful. I love him, but he has such a rollercoaster of a career. So much so, that one of my favorite performances he's done in recent years was a cameo on a Disney channel show, because one of his kids was a big fan. I kinda want him to pursue TV more. No the really bad laugh track comedies, but something on like HBO, where it's a drama with comedic moments.

It was only later, when thinking back on the movie, I'd thought how dumb or cringey a lot of it was. But *at the time*, I enjoyed what I was watching and felt entertained. So, mission accomplished, I guess.

In a way I love that about Sandler. He kind of reminds me of Chevy Chase in that sense. He could make truly awful comedies but when he decides to stop and try something different he is excellent. Chase had that just playing his sarcastic constant self but when he abandoned that in the movie Funny Farm I found him to be an excellent comedic actor. Sandler is the same. When he tries stuff like Punch Drunk Love, Uncut Gems Meyrowitz Stories or Hustle he is very, very good. In those roles you wonder how he has not yet been nominated for an Oscar.

Also, "click" i agree was very emotional. And I also kinda took it as a metaphor for substance abuse. For example, when you use for a long time then you get clean there is a moment when you realize "wow, 7 years of my life have just gone by... Wtf happened? How could I let my life become this?" And it really hits home for me because not only am I a recovering addict but I also am a licensed CDCA so my career is focused on helping others recovering from addiction. And I see so many connections to chronic substance abuse and that movie. Especially the sad parts. Like seeing how fast your life fell apart and how you barley know your loved ones anymore and how your children grow up so fast.... It's just all so very deep to me . But, I generally love any movie he does (with a few exceptions)... Adam Sandler we love your sillyness!!☺️ Don't listen to the haters!

I don't think it's quite as watchable, this many years later, as Airheads, though. I think Airheads generally aged pretty well, and now a lot of the funnier parts of Big Daddy have become a bit awkward, though not necessarily bad.

Ikr?! I mean for god's sake, THE CLIMAX HAD ME TEARING UP FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER X*(! It was the very first movie to give me a tearjerker, and honestly it had a more original concept than what meets the eye- it wasn't just a "remote that forwards time", it came with literal "Universal effects", and had a good strong message about trying to push passed everything you found dull and boring in your life to just enjoy the best moments. That says a lot for a seemingly time-warping-based film ;/!!!

I respect it as one of Sandler’s best, especially in the terms of his more emotional movies that I’ve seen. I think it was more the fact that it was commercialized as a full-fledge comedy movie while the actual movie was a dramady that left a bad taste in the mouths of some of the people who saw it and didn’t like it.

    • @VanessaMagick
      @VanessaMagick 5 лет назад +11

the bullshit twist at the end was terrible and the whole narrative they pushed doesnt make any sense, because adam sandler's character didn't fuck up his whole life by abusing his power, he fucked up his whole life because the remote control did shit adam sandler didnt want it to do.
if the remote control wasnt broken, the film's message wouldnt work because everything would be fine

i dont always agree with walker, but when i do i tend to fully endourse him
a few things i dont agree with him on
1: i heavily disagree with his white washing video as its making a big deal out of basically nothing(now adays) and he doesnt fully understand how movies and companies think, you have to keep in mind americans are mostly white with a few other races mixxed in, so it makes sense when you relaly stop and think about it, theres also the fact that his arguement like many others can be dismantled by askign the question, if scarlet got so much hate for taking the major role, why did the black dude who played borma get a free pass, is it not still taking a role away from asians
2: his idea of slap stick, in my opinion this is heavily flawed as in his mind the purist form of comedy is pain at the expense of others, and while this might not be exactly wrong, it should be expanded on by saying that the character should deserve the punishment, that the audience should want that character punished for being stupid or evil, a good example is meg getting hurt vrs. petter getting hurt. ask your self, which do you find funnier, the character who had never done a thing wrong getting abused, or the character who constently acts like an arrogant, self centered asshole getting punished

    Only comedies, no dramas
11: Hotel Transylvania 2 (I grew up with this franchise and this is the best)
10: Click (A creative idea with an ending that had me laughing out loud)
9: Wedding Singer (It’s mostly just people hanging out and I love it!)
8: The Longest Yard (So many stand-out characters all throughout)
7: Blended (The perfect definition of a ridiculous, stupid Sandler comedy)
6: Billy Madison (One of the two films that changed his life/career)
5: 50 First Dates (An incredible mix of serious drama and funny comedy)
4: Happy Gilmore (Wildy considered as of one his absolute best)
3: Big Daddy (I quote many lines from this movie in my everyday life)
2: Waterboy (Yet another Adam Sandler movie I quote all the time)
1: Mr. Deeds (Definitely not the best but I always get of good laugh)

But it's not just adults though - I mean sure it's more leaning toward 90s culture now - but a lot of 80s fashion and 80s music are worn and listened to by teens. Think about it: Stranger Things, Drive and basically all of the crap movie remakes of today are based around the 80s!
If you want examples of kids liking 50s stuff around the time of the 80s look at Grease, look at IT - and as mentioned before BACK TO THE FUTURE which is an incredible example.
In essence it's very likely that in 20 years people will look at either the 2000s or the 2010s for fashion and music.
