Doug never makes fun of Robin Williams. He makes fun of a movie and a character in that movie, and I think he has every right to. The points are still accurate, and the jokes are still funny, even after Robin Williams' sad death.
Nostalgia Critic made a video about Robin after his death talking about how great he was, so, agreed, he doesnt like the movie, it's not the actors fault ruclips.net/video/BPb4foqDlsY/видео.html
The fingers thing toward the beginning is beyond stupid and defeats the entire premise of the film. The guy holds up 4 fingers and tells Patch to look at him, not his fingers. He says he sees 8 fingers and the guy tells him that's a better answer because it doesn't conform to the objective consensus... The problem is that there are only 4 fingers and obviously, he sees the same 4 fingers from 2 different angles, thus creating the illusion that there are more. The implied message is that by focusing on the person rather than the problem, you cloud the issue and get the wrong answer, which is the OPPOSITE of the point the movie is trying to make.
cyanmanta Agreed. The fact that Patch saying the guy has 8 fingers when he clearly has 4 is treated as him being a non conformist even though it's clear the guy has 4 fingers makes no sense.
cyanmanta The thing with this I think isn't that the guy HAS 8 fingers, but that Patch concentrates on the person the fingers are attached to rather than the fingers themselves. Its not the best segue and obviously doesn't get the point across very clearly, but this is actually really important as at the time patient-centered care wasn't really done. The medical staff would treat the illness without really worrying about the patient. Nowadays, patent-centered care is seen as very important and is taught from the very beginning, but back when the movie is set it just wasn't done, which is one of the reasons Patch made such a splash; he treated the whole person, not just the illness they had. The writers could have explained this better, since I never really understood it until I started my nursing classes, but once you understand where they're coming from it actually hold a lot of water.
Oh yeah, definitely agree. It was really poorly explained, and a little difficult to apply to medicine. There's a reason the real Patch Adams doesn't like this movie.
massive2341 Hunter Adams said that he would watch that movie whenever he was in stressful times and thanked Robin Williams for everything. Here's the quote by the man himself: "The terrible news of the passing of Robin Williams reached me here in the Peruvian Amazon late Monday night with tremendous sadness. Surrounded by over 100 friends and clowns on our annual clown trip, we mourn this tragic loss and continue to treasure his comic genius. Robin Williams was a wonderful, kind and generous man. One important thing I remember about his personality is that he was unassuming-he never acted as if he was powerful or famous. Instead, he was always tender and welcoming, willing to help others with a smile or a joke. Robin was a brilliant comedian-there is no doubt. He was a compassionate, caring human being. While watching him work on the set of the film based on my life-Patch Adams-I saw that whenever there was a stressful moment, Robin would tap into his improvisation style to lighten the mood of cast and crew. Also, I would like to point out, Robin would be especially kind toward my children when they would visit the set. Contrary to how many people may view him, he actually seemed to me to be an introvert. When he invited me and my family into his home, he valued peace and quiet, a chance to breathe-a chance to get away from the fame that his talent has brought him. While early in life, he turned to drug use and alcohol to escape, he replaced the addiction with moments of solitude to help cope with the stress that fame brought. This world is not kind to people who become famous, and the fame he had garnered was a nightmare. While saddened, we are left with the consequences of his death. I’m enormously grateful for his wonderful performance of my early life, which has allowed the Gesundheit Institute to continue and expand our work. We extend our blessings to his family and friends in this moment of sadness. Thank you for all you’ve given this world Robin, thank you my friend." So there you have it!
So by the logic of most people offended by Robin Williams death. If Will Smith died from a sad end years later, would the review of After Earth also be offensive?
In my very humble opinion, I think this movie earns more defense than After Earth would because Robin Williams still seems to TRY in this movie. The flaws are extremely apparent, and it doesn't excuse the fact that he depicted a hard working doctor as just a clown, but truthfully a lot of those flaws lies more in the writing and direction than it is with Robin Williams himself. I feel like I still see him trying his damndest to put in passion into this role, even if he was playing it the same way as every other role. It really, really feels like Robin Williams was trying hard with this movie... But looking at After Earth, that movie was completely built around sucking Smith-Dick. The performance given by Will Smith in that movie is just god awful, and has NOTHING to do with his real talents. He was Shamalyzed for After Earth, and there are dozens of other movies where he does phenomenally better work than he does in After Earth. In Patch Adams, we can at least see that Robin Williams was trying, and he was still giving off a feel of charisma to the point where he felt like a real character, even prompting NC to yell at the CHARACTER in some points and not the actor. In After Earth, there's just absolutely nothing redeemable about it. If Will Smith died anytime soon (which I pray he doesn't, don't want ANY early death on anyone), After Earth wouldn't be remembered with pride, it'd be shamefully hidden away because that movie blatantly did nothing but stroke the Smith ego, and we ALL know that has nothing to do with Will Smith. Granted I think the 'hate' on any review just because the main actor had sadly passed away never makes any logical sense. A lot of the flaming are just trolls trying to start things, or people trying to vent out emotions for what might've been one of their favorite actors. Whoa I did not mean to rant...
Sage French That seems to be the logic of some idiots. They think as soon as an actor or actress dies anything criticizing them is somehow automatically offensive.
Seriously people...why should critic feel bad because he made this review two years ago!? Movies don't get any better when the actors in it die. Only the view people have on it changes. Learn to separate that!
@@mrrselfdestruction1077 He's actually a fan of Williams' comedic talents. Just not a fan of some of his movies and the fact that he's dead isn't going to make them any better.
Rest in peace Mr. Williams. You will be missed, but...this is still a pretty insulting movie to a real life doctor, his friend, and a beloved comedic actor constantly forced to be uncomedic
It's so great you can acknowledge that! I'm tired of folks switching their opinions when death occurs. Robin definitely put his all into this, and fortunately that's not the big problem. The problem is in the writing, the direction, and the general disrespect for Hunter Adams' work. I think Robin was an ideal casting choice, but the rest of the film just can't hold water.
For the people who want this video taken down because of Robin's death... "Uploaded on Feb 15, 2012" This was uploaded over two years ago, before Robin died. If this *old* review offends you because of the death and you think it was made to take the piss out of Mr. Williams because he died, you're a bit over-sensitive. Just saying.
Personally I don't see anything wrong with Robin Williams performance, he was fine and he tried his best but this film really screwed up Patch's portrayal in such an offensive manner that even Robin Williams couldn't save this movie
Is not always The actors fault, specially on this films where we clearly see the lack of Director vision on "A REAL EVENT" like Michel Bay on "Pearl Harbor" they just decide to add more stuff that never happen to add more "drama" that is mostly why Doug listed this movies in his top hated films he reviewed
Jonathan Gonzales I don't think Critic said anything about William's performance being bad, his only gripe was with the character and how the movie treated his actions.
2:30 "Do you find that funny, Hunter? Making fun of a man's infirmity?" Great point by Nostalgia Critic (and the therapist). William's character pontificates about how Beanie should be treated with a little more dignity and respect then spends the next minute or two making Beanie the butt of several jokes. This makes Williams look like a massive asshole and it completely undermines whatever he had to say about dignity and respect. Did no one in this production see how incredibly tasteless it was to use a catatonic patient as a comedy prop?
It's worse because catatonic individuals are fully aware of their surroundings and in the event they wake up, they're not happy if they learn they've been messed with while they were catatonic. And the kicker? _Robin Williams knew this_ because he worked on a movie involving catatonia before this movie. You'd think he'd express more reluctance to go through with that joke.
Yeah. I get when people say, you should treat people with handicaps the same way you would any other person (as far as it is possible) as to integrate them into the group and make them feel human but I think this could've been done in a less offending way. It's like joking about the weight or looks of a person. But even then, that person could at least (in theory) fight/joke back.
P. Roud Tobi Mi It also ties in with another thing the Critic mentioned: asking for a sense of humour is different from *forcing* it. Making jokes with someone can be a way of being inclusive, but *only if you get his consent*. Otherwise, you're just being a douchebag.
"Awakenings" is a much better medicine film with Robin Williams in it. Superb acting by Mr. Williams, and Mr. DeNiro. I highly recommend it over this film.
2:43. You want to know the really fucked up thing about that scene? When people go into catatonic states like that, they are still perfectly aware of what's going on around them...he can hear every joke being made at his expense...wow.
It makes me wonder if the writers actually knew what a catatonic state was or not. If they did, it makes them really sadistic. If they didn't, it makes them morons who need to do more research.
+Razor Smith But I have the official Universal Pictures VHS and Patch Adams not onl;y APPEARS in the afterword (post-flick) but is HAPPY about it (with Robin Williams and director Tom "Ace Ventura series/Modern Nutty Professor series" Shadyac), discussing it.One thing..his book bears NO dramatic resemblance to the movie (not just the male changed to the female Carin Fisher) but is NOT a heart rending narrative-similiar to What to Expecty when you're expecting book vs movie, Queen Bees/Wannabees vs Mean Girls.....also Patch and Robin DON'T MUTALLY look ALIKE! loll
Heh, no, just pointing out something even if Patch Adams appearances (the real McCoy, or McPatch) have been edited in the Unviersal video that I mentioned in my last reply (shrugs shoudlers). Totally good point about $$$$ talks, as the studios can bargain with the subject portrayed (Dr.Adams in this case) for a softball interview (wouldn't wanna go saying "THAT Robin Williams portrayal of me SUCKS" on screen now..)
For those who may not know, the real ideas of Hunter Adams are indeed based around humour, but there's much more to it than just clowning around with patients to make them laugh. It's more about emphasising the emotional wellbeing and the comfort of patients just as much as their physical wellbeing. It's not necessarily that the film misrepresented his ideas, as much as it horribly oversimplified them to "Laughter is the best medicine, hoho!". And he did actually create the free community hospital in real (which apparently ran for 12 years, not too shabby), but not until AFTER he had graduated.
This is one of my favourite Nostalgia Critic reviews. I love the balance between humour and serious critique. Doug was on fire here. The review is so good it almost justifies the existence of the movie. Almost.
Doctor: (To his class) Human beings are not worthy of trust. It is our mission here to rigorously and ruthlessly train the humanity out of you. Okay, if I was in that class, I'd leave and report that my professor had suddenly gone insane. There's a difference between being emotionally uninvolved for the sake of your job and being a misanthropic psychopath.
I saw you post on the' Let it go' vid, you commentate like someone with true sense and intelligence. If you're really a writer i suggest you don't be afraid of faulting or not living up to standards. You seem creative, and have reasonable deductable skills. This seems random, but it'd be a crime not to implore somone with talent to persue something grand. Peace.
Thank you for your kind words. I am a writer and am actually going to graduate this year from college with a double major in Creative Writing and Theater. So, that's a start somewhere. :) As for my plans after college, I'd love to write professionally (fiction/plays) and act. Again, thank you for your encouragement.
What's your take on screenwriting?Granted Hollywood is more about marketable formula, but i feel quality is slowly coming back to the forefront.Television is hot right now for writers.
I agree; quality is slowly but surely creeping back into the movies. I was jaded with Hollywood for a long time, thinking they'd turned into nothing but lazy, formulaic sellouts. Then again, my taste in entertainment is different from most people's today: I love silent films/films from the 1930s-1940s and I read authors like Edgar Allan Poe and Victor Hugo in my spare time and love fairytales and legends like the stories of King Arthur. However, with movies like "Midnight in Paris", "Saving Mr. Banks", and "Frozen", I'm starting to have faith that Hollywood is getting back to its roots as storytellers. I'd love to take classes in screenwriting (I've only done playwriting and acting for the stage thus far) because once I learn how, I have dozens of film ideas in my head that would get the movies back to the more "old school" stuff they used to be. .
Honestly, i think if Artists could balance both their creative complexitiy with a modern day 21st century understanding of economics there could be middle ground in which you could appease the money hungry executives with quality. It's a business after all and i think they're starting to understand (the execs), that they need to innovate because we have a thriving independent market and alternative sources, also choice through the internet. It starts with perception; if that's shifted the market has to adjust or die, Ie: the music industry. If you're a fan of 'The hollywood reporter' they have 'roundtables' and this passing yr they had the executives from all the major studios talking openly about the reality and their fears. I wish you luck, theater is demanding but truly rewarding. Haha not that i'd personally know the strains of theater though it's one of the few Artistic cornerstones with its integrity intact. About your likes, i'm a fan of the golden age my self though i need to familiarize my self with the great novellas i've neglected (some you named).
19:21 _"Well . . . uh, you know what the best cure for that is? A monkey."_ When Carin shares her molestation story with Patch, it's the first time in the movie we see him without a wiseass quip or some hopelessly simplistic slogan (which is what makes Critic's monkey routine at that point so hilarious). Sometimes bad things happen to good people and the writers of this movie didn't have a grown-up answer to that.
11:15 -I think that sums up the major problem of the movie. They make it seem like a doctor can either be an uptight, insensitive douchebag with no bedside manner whatsoever, or a buffoon who makes his/her patients laugh, but doesn't practice medicine at all on them (you'll notice the option of being a doctor who relates to his/her patients with a reasonable amount of bedside manner while still actually treating their illnesses isn't even brought up as a possibility).
#1 they are medical students the whole time in the movie the fact that they are treating people is highly illegal as the movie even states #2 hunter (patch) adams actually stated he doesnt like the film because it makes him look like an idiot when in reality he was a very good medical student practicing medicine normally #3 the girl who died was actually a guy in real life they just wanted to have some romance for the sake of it
I miss Robin Williams as much as the next guy, but I honestly don't think that we should just ignore the bad moments of his career. By acknowledging the bad, we can better appreciate the good, and when he got it right, he really got it right.
Add onto the fact that the studio promised Hunter Adams that some of the profits the movie made would be donated to his hospital. Big surprise: he didn't receive a single penny.
jbvader721 Seriously?!! That's just... wow. "Hey, Mr. Adams! We are interested in completely misrepresenting you and your hard and astonishing medical work, and we are ready to donate exactly ZERO dollars of the profit to your hospital. Interested?"
Just wanted to say: Psychiatrists ARE medical doctors. They go to medical school and then specialize in mental health. You are thinking of psychologists.
I just came here to see people defending this piece of crap because the main actor died. Internet, oh Internet, you rarely disappoint. (No I do not hate R. Williams, I'm just sick of the sudden lifetime fanbase).
I'd hate to see the day when Uve Boll dies, since apparently that'll be the day all of his shit films become cinematic gold, and god forbid you point out any of their flaws.
In my OPINION I do not like Williams acting style, when I posted this on a comments, ooh maybe about 6 months ago. Some philistine called me a fascist. He did not even use it right.
Michael jackson was a legend even when he was alive. I can see that nc didn't like it because it wasn't a movie. It was a compilation of music videos at the most.
20:57 This single moment is why Patch Adams is literally one of the worst movies of all time. Any chances this movie had for redemption were thrown out the window.
We had to watch this movie in English class a few years back. While all of my classmates were laughing and crying at it I was quoting the review to myself. When the movie was over and we were asked what our opinions were, I just said it was fine because I didn't want to have to explain myself to a room full of people who actually liked it.
3:32 _"Don't look at the problem, look at me. If you focus on the problem, you can't see the solution."_ You're not asking him to figure out a problem. You're asking him to deny the reality of his senses and that's f*cking insane. Which, incidentally, is the reason why YOU are HERE. Also, this is stupid advice. Unless you understand the problem, you can't possibly figure out the solution. Critical thinking is an important skill. It's what keeps us from pouring sulfuric acid on our genitals or filling our goldfish tanks with Mountain Dew.
Whitney c I met a schizophrenic man who told me hedgehogs had secret earpieces and would convey back and forth information to the government. good advice I will take to my grave
My uncle thinks the government experimented on him in 'nam..... He says they poisoned him with potassium? Is that even possible? Also he thinks he's been cloned but his clones are for some reason all Vietnamese. Whatever. It's nowhere near as good as the hedgehog earpiece thing.
R.I.P. Phillip Seymour Hoffman who played the most supportive student who talk balls to Patch Adams that you can study or don't study and he's more better than him. Thank You and I'm not going to come back with this corny movie that this fake doctor is not curing patients with laughter. Your ark is complete Hoffman, go and peace.
Every single time The Critic mentions orthodoxy and its respective levels I lose it. This, along with Tom and Jerry, are his best reviews. Both passionate, funny as hell and his criticisms are brilliantly articulated.
AussieMan wrong if you accept this for what it is I personally would not just go like the n c abs go Fucvcccck you movie but yes patch herself dud take understand issues due to falsify cations
This is one of my favorite Nostalgia Critic reviews, despite being comedically hilarious, it also completely tears the entire movie's weak substance apart, pointing out every glaring bit of carelessness in it so well.
I work as a private grounds keeper for a dotoctor that own a plot of land across from the hospital he works at as a surgeon, and he plans to operate a restaurant and hotel for patient's familys so in a way I work for a non idiotic version of path adams
For everyone that insults the critic because robin williams is dead....well...a)this review came out before his death and b)because a good actor is dead doesn't mean that all of his works are good....i feel like that's the case with many people, they are good when they are alive but they are LEGENDARY when they die....or quit one or the other
Your actually right. But i tend to forget the fact that it was suppose to reflect the real Patch Adams life. I know i shouldn't but the heart warming moments get me every time. Like the scene with the kids in the hospital, yes, robin's performance was ridiculous and over the top but it was just too cute to see those sick kids laugh.
It's the artist effect. When someone is alive people will be fair and criticize their works or outright hate them, but once they're dead suddenly everything they ever did is a masterpiece and perfect.
He wasn't even croaked when this was done..(I read this before his death..) I don't hate the film., and enjpyed it for a umber pof years, but, yeah, it IS terribly flawed, including the "truth"..like Monica Potter/Carin Fisher dying, when it was a male friend, and she did not even EXIST! Oh, and one thing:Patch himself didn't care for it (though on my Universal Video VHS he does say otherwise) and looks NOTHING like ROBIN WILLIAMS. Still, he does get very serious whjen Carin tells of her molestation (whilst not even using the term itsells) and it seems to portraya "Dean Walcott" as more in the right than "Patch" in the part where Patch's exprelled by Dean W. for his "gynecology" stunt.
Ok but, how is this unofficial reupload of an NC episode is at near perfect 720p quality and the _original_ upload on Channel Awesome's channel from back when it came out is in 240p?
This is the most genuinely angry I think I've ever seen Mr Critic get! Feels like he wan't even acting during most of this, you can feel the intense hate in his voice almost all of the way through!
WOW!!! The murdered female love interest was 100% fiction? Did some studio exec see the ending of Titanic and tried to milk off its success with a star crossed lovers plot, conclusion being a tragic death?
So true the only reason why all those extras are there is because they are actors from a failed skit show Doug tried to make after quitting the nostalgia critic so he decided to bring the critic back and add the skit show to the critic show i personally skip the skit parks because they are painfully unfunny
stethespaniard2 I never really understood the sudden hate for his skits, sure they're more elaborate post to boldly flee than there were before (taking advantage of having more actors and studio space) but they were always there. In this review for example we have the clown throwing the red nose.
Well I think the new ones hold up. Personally, I think both the old AND the new are good in their own special way. The old ones were more about the comedy and making fun of films while still making valid points about their structure. Whereas for he new ones, it's the other way around.
+stethespaniard2 This. Seriously. The sketches he does now are like Family Guy cutaways. They're not funny, they're not necessary, they're hardly relevant, some of them drag on for WAY too long, and they interrupt the flow of the video, thus completely taking us out of the mood.
+Robintheboywonder4 Well, here are the differences: 1. You can tell here that Doug actually put some amount of effort into making the Dr. Bitch-Spasms sketch funny, whereas nowadays, he just throws together sketches just to have sketches and the results are utter garbage 99% of the time. 2. The sketches here last for maybe 20-30 seconds max. The sketches in the new review are not only unfunny, as I said before, but many of them just drag on and on and on. In The Fourth commercial review where they spent half the video literally doing nothing but milking that stupid sexual harassment joke was just painful. I literally felt like I was watching SNL meets Family Guy cutaways. 3. The sketch in this review was done by Doug himself. (Those actors he has doing the sketches nowadays are just horribly unfunny.) It's time for Doug to throw out all these horrible half-baked sketches and just get back to good old Nostalgia Critic.
Couple of posters below me say that you need to 'suspend your disbelief' to enjoy this movie, but there's such a thing as going too far. There are a couple of anachronisms I can ignore like the use of the word 'sucks', but overly contrived and tendentious crap like the professor's 'train the humanity out of you speech' or Carin's ridiculously self-conscious introduction or that disgusting courtroom scene is so gauche that it insults your intelligence and breaks the fourth wall.
Because of the great pains the movie takes to pull you out of the experience of watching a movie in order to to manipulate your emotions, this movie seems to be aimed at people who are unfamiliar with anything beyond basic storytelling. You know, the kind of people for whom the most intellectually challenging movie or book they weren't forced to experience for class was The Matrix or Harry Potter.
"Suspend your disbelief" is bullshit when you're seeing a movie about a real person/real event. Fudging the facts in order to make the movie more appealing to a general audience not only is a slap in the face to the people who go to see it and expecting to learn a little something, but also a slap in the face, a kick in the ass, and a punch in the balls to the person/event that is being portrayed.
The Dork Knight ""Suspend your disbelief" is bullshit when you're seeing a movie about a real person/real event." A greater truth has never been spoken. It's hilarious how people can call for "suspension of disbelief" on a movie that sells itself as "based on a true story". It is true, but don't believe it!!
The Dork Knight Why do I get this feeling that if it's Hollywood, "based on a true story" is anything but? Should there be a new law against it? "Films that bear the tagline 'based on a true story' carry the death penalty"
That stereotype of women who seem tough and cold but are in reality crippled by their emotions? ELSA. THAT'S ELSA RIGHT THERE. It's the number one reason I hate that movie.
Almost every Nostalgia Critic Robin Williams review someone says "Doesnt Doug feels sorry now?" like he made fun of Robin Williams, not the movie. Nostalgia Critic reviewed movies made by people who already passed away, and yet he doesnt get the same flak (Besides Mako) I bet, if a celebrety died and was in one of Dougs reviewed, someone is going to say "I bed Doug feels sorry about making this review now"
ElectricMayhem87 People who complain about criticism of actors and actresses after they die were probably insane fanboys and fangirls of the actor when they were alive anyway and they probably think any actor or actress they like is immune to criticism just because they like them. .
realitywarper93 Yeah. Whenever he reviews a film with a dead actor or actress in it there's always some idiots who assume he did the review after they died to mock them and make fun of their deaths. It never seems to occur to them that Doug might have done the review before the actor or actress in the movie died.
I actually think one of the major problems with this film is how they portray the "villain". Its something that the Critic only used as a bit of a punchline for the "Most Unorthodox" joke but here he's portrayed as a drill sergeant type who is not only bent on the ideology that Doctors are better than humanity but he's also completely closed off to any new ways of thinking or methods to heal patients. Okay, I don't know how a Dean of a Medical School would act but if you want a fair portrayal (and clearly this movie did not but just saying "IF you wanted a fair portrayal") why not develop him more as a character to show WHY he believes this one way of doing things is the right way, then you have a clash of two ways of thinking and (if you portrayed Adams right, which, again, clearly this movie didn't) none of them are strictly good or bad.
You know, as someone that has been Baker acted for suicidal thoughts, it's actually very common for the violent and potentially dangerous patients to be placed in together with the suicidal patients.
Well the real-life Patch Adams may have hated this movie, but, just like many, he liked and respected Robin Williams. In fact, just like many, he said that he was deeply moved by Williams' death last year.
Disowned Adaptation: The real Patch Adams himself was dissatisfied with the film, saying that it is more commercial and focuses more on him being funny than his actual methods; His philosophy is about using friendliness and humor to help in the healing process, using alternative medical treatments as well; the movie presented him as guy who likes making people feel better but actually getting better is a secondary issue. He was also annoyed that Robin Williams did not bother to donate any of his salary to his institute, although he did not dislike Williams as a whole and applauded his support for St. Jude Children's Hospital. In fact, the two were otherwise pretty good friends, so much so Adams would later write for Time Magazine a heartwarming farewell to Williams after he committed suicide.
This is perhaps one of my favourite NC reviews. Robin William's performance wasn't bad, the bad thing is that they made him portray a non-realistic version of one of the most famous faces of modern medicine.
What's even worse about this movie was that it promised the real life Patch Adams a portion of the profit to go to his hospital and he wasn't given anything. That is just absurd, he deserved funding for his hospital and he deserves a much better film than this.
This is actually one of my favorite reviews from the Nostalgia Critic (number one goes to his MAN OF STEEL review as it embodies Doug's philosophy that one should be allowed to enjoy whatever they want and not be insulted for it). See the thing is, I actually liked this movie when I first saw it, but after seeing this review, I rethought that position a bit. The moment the Critic learned that it was really a man who was murdered in real life I was like, "Seriously?! What the heck was this movie thinking?! To misrepresent a dead person by getting their gender incorrect is simply wrong!!!" This review made me realize that this movie was not good...
I know Robin Williams did something similar for Christopher Reeves when he fell off the horse and to the hospital Robin Williams wore a doctors jacket and a surgical mask and spoke in a Russian accent and made Chris Reeves laugh. There will no one that naturally funny like him.RIP Robin Williams
"Donner, party of 50." Is this in reference to that group, the Donner party, that got lost in the mountains during winter, and ended up cannibalizing each other? Because that is a shitty joke to make.
My gawd mate I hope he didnt take his own life cuz it made this movie even more tragic. It be like he knew, as I do, want a mental ward is like, gave up hope and just ended it all. I you and many are gonna miss him. Unlike what this review says, this is a bad movie, but its not cuz of Robin Williams who does well in it regardless. May he rest well forever.
21:10 Whoa, that is f*cked up, man. I mean, seriously, did the filmmakers really believed they could make a great dramedy out of this?! I'm sorry, I know, RIP Robin Williams, but *WTF?!* Such shame they bring to themselves.
Doug never makes fun of Robin Williams. He makes fun of a movie and a character in that movie, and I think he has every right to. The points are still accurate, and the jokes are still funny, even after Robin Williams' sad death.
well, this *was* recorded before Williams' death
And its incredibly sappy and cheesy
Nostalgia Critic made a video about Robin after his death talking about how great he was, so, agreed, he doesnt like the movie, it's not the actors fault
ruclips.net/video/BPb4foqDlsY/видео.html
Yeah, but at the same time time, watch 13:31 ... I know he wasn't dead yet, but... Yeeaah...
Cyberlord he was talking about the character, not the actor...
The fingers thing toward the beginning is beyond stupid and defeats the entire premise of the film. The guy holds up 4 fingers and tells Patch to look at him, not his fingers. cyanmanta The thing with this I think isn't that the guy HAS 8 fingers, but that Patch concentrates on the person the fingers are attached to rather than the fingers themselves. The writers could have explained this better, since I never really understood it until I started my nursing classes, but once you understand where they're coming from it actually hold a lot of water.
Labyrinth Lycan I see your point. However, what we are seeing in this movie is a very childish interpretation of that message.
Oh yeah, definitely agree. It was really poorly explained, and a little difficult to apply to medicine. There's a reason the real Patch Adams doesn't like this movie.
cyanmanta Wow, Insightful! Good roll mate; nat-20?? ;) Srs tho, Wisdom. Take care
The real Hunter Adams was so upset with his portrayal in this movie that he actually contacted Williams to tell him.
+LEGOStudios9083 Only to apologize and thank Robin Williams for even staring as him in a film adaptation after his tragic death!
+Kirby5413 No he said that he had nothing against Robin Williams personally, but still hated the movie.
massive2341 That was before his death! After his death he said that he thanked Robin Williams for starring in the film in the first place! Read it up!
Kirby5413 No, he said he was a nice person and a great friend. He didn't say anything about thanking him for starring in the movie.
massive2341 Hunter Adams said that he would watch that movie whenever he was in stressful times and thanked Robin Williams for everything. Here's the quote by the man himself:
"The terrible news of the passing of Robin Williams reached me here in the Peruvian Amazon late Monday night with tremendous sadness. Thank you for all you’ve given this world Robin, thank you my friend."
So there you have it!
So by the logic of most people offended by Robin Williams death. If Will Smith died from a sad end years later, would the review of After Earth also be offensive?
DENIED!
Paul Meredith Thanks for the laugh! :D
That comment is sheer brilliance
Because he makes fun of robin Williams comedic Talent when the critic has none at all.
mrr self destruction he never made fun of him. Just the roles he's in.
mrr self destruction it’s personal preference
@@mrrselfdestruction1077 He's actually a fan of Williams' comedic talents. Just not a fan of some of his movies and the fact that he's dead isn't going to make them any better.
oh you mean like the dark knight trilogy?
Rest in peace Mr. Williams. You will be missed, but...this is still a pretty insulting movie to a real life doctor, his friend, and a beloved comedic actor constantly forced to be uncomedic
It's so great you can acknowledge that! I'm tired of folks switching their opinions when death occurs. Robin definitely put his all into this, and fortunately that's not the big problem. The problem is in the writing, the direction, and the general disrespect for Hunter Adams' work. I think Robin was an ideal casting choice, but the rest of the film just can't hold water.
Actually any of his interviews is better than the movie, and he is still hillarious in his ways.
...what video game
***** Can you speak a little bit softer?
Being forced to be uncomedic, I wouldn't be surprised that such notions would've contributed to Robin Williams' death. :(
It's a little spooky to see Robin Williams shaking hands with Philip Seymour Hoffman
Holy shit, yeah, now that both of them have passed away, that's interesting.
Alex Furnas I totally had that thought too :-/
I find it sad considering they were 2 of my favorite actors
too soon
Alex Furnas Even spookier to think Doug used a belt on Robin's face.
One of his best and funniest reviews. The timing is quick, clever and witty.
Right on
For the people who want this video taken down because of Robin's death...
"Uploaded on Feb 15, 2012"
This was uploaded over two years ago, before Robin died. If this *old* review offends you because of the death and you think it was made to take the piss out of Mr. Williams because he died, you're a bit over-sensitive. Just saying.
keep in mind people are idiots when they are overly upset or overly pissed off.
Flint Dragoon Internet Zen that is.
WHAT?! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, HOW ELSE ARE THEY SUPPOSED TO SHOW HOW MUCH THEY LOVED ROBIN WILLIAMS IF THEY DON'T IGNORE THAT?!
madmarsrocks2012
The fact that this comment even has to exist bothers me... I thought people knew better.
Most unorthodox!!!!!
Personally I don't see anything wrong with Robin Williams performance, he was fine and he tried his best but this film really screwed up Patch's portrayal in such an offensive manner that even Robin Williams couldn't save this movie
***** Yeah, you can't polish a turd.
Jonathan Gonzales Who would have thought the guy's lover was a dude?
Jonathan Gonzales I don't think Critic said anything about William's performance being bad, his only gripe was with the character and how the movie treated his actions.
Blame the writing, not the actor.
You know what's horrible about 2:45? People who are catatonic like that are still aware of what's going on.
Just let that sink in.
How do we know he was actually catatonic? For all we know he could've been asleep with his eyes open (which does happen to some people).
Russell Brown The psychiatrist says so.
***** you do know he was repeating someone said in the movie right?
McLovin McLovin yes I do
*****
then how is he racist?
COME HERE, MOVIE! COME HERE! THAT'S A BAD MOVIE!
That is, so far, my favorite thing The Critic has done.
+IronGod1640 ho hohooh hooh hoho hohoo
My reaction to this film was basically summed up by a line I distinctly remembered from it "You want to be a clown? Go join the circus!"
You know what's a better, "you want to" line than that?
"You want to be a farmer? Here's a couple of acres"
+the Comic Nation 108 When Last Action Hero outdoes you, you know you've gotta reevaluate.
The real Patch Adams hated the movie.
The critic said that at the end of the movie.
One True Hetalian I don't know if you watched all the way, but the critic said that at the end.
Sir Doc Why did you direct that comment towards me?
One True Hetalian I didn't know if you knew that or not.
Sir Doc You said that the real Patch Adams hated the films, so I thought you didn't watch the end.
Oh god
It makes me wonder if the writers actually knew what a catatonic state was or not. If they did, it makes them really sadistic. If they didn't, it makes them morons who need to do more research.
Kind of makes that face the Critic does at 2:56 take on a whole new meaning.
The orthodox levels of this review are most un
Orthodox
+kovyiscool Holy
+kovyiscool XD
Almost.
Doug deserves to have that NickToon Doug's theme burned in his head for this review.....LOL
Fernie Canto Anyone else love the way he shot the clown in the end? Classic!
Yes!!!! I always say: the only good thing that came out from the movie Patch Adams is the Nostalgia Critic's review.
Completely agree. It's genuinely insightful and all his bits about "orthodoxy" are hilarious.
"We are NOT on the same level as our patients! _WE ARE HEALTHY!_"
That's my favorite part XD
19:21 _"Well . . . uh, you know what the best cure for that is? A monkey."_
When Carin shares her molestation story with Patch, it's the first time in the movie we see him without a wiseass quip or some hopelessly simplistic slogan (which is what makes Critic's monkey routine at that point so hilarious). Sometimes bad things happen to good people and the writers of this movie didn't have a grown-up answer to that.
Greg Sestero (Mark from The Room) made a cameo appearance in this movie.
Melku44 anyway how is your sex life?
Ecléctico Iconoclasta can't talk about it
Melku44 Why not?
Notgonnatellyou notgonnasayit
oh hi doggie
Melku44 Go on?
11:15 -I think that sums up the major problem of the movie. They make it seem like a doctor can either be an uptight, insensitive douchebag with no bedside manner whatsoever, or a buffoon who makes his/her patients laugh, but doesn't practice medicine at all on them (you'll notice the option of being a doctor who relates to his/her patients with a reasonable amount of bedside manner while still actually treating their illnesses isn't even brought up as a possibility).
#1 they are medical students the whole time in the movie the fact that they are treating people is highly illegal as the movie even states
#2 hunter (patch) adams actually stated he doesnt like the film because it makes him look like an idiot when in reality he was a very good medical student practicing medicine normally
#3 the girl who died was actually a guy in real life they just wanted to have some romance for the sake of it
indeed Of course. But what I mentioned would still be a problem even if the filmmakers hadn't tried to put this out as based on an actual person.
ElectricMayhem87 personally i think hunter adams is an idiot i know about him in real life
indeed Why do you think he's an idiot? Not trying to start an argument just genuinely curious why you think he's an idiot.
From what little I've seen of the actual Hunter Adams, what you described is closer to what his methods actually are than the movie.
"Never focus on the problem." Yes, I see why the guy went crazy during math.
There's a reason why he's in a mental ward
Maybe Patch stole the hospital stuff on free hospital stuff day!
whoever gets the reference gets a cookie

I miss Robin Williams as much as the next guy, but I honestly don't think that we should just ignore the bad moments of his career. By acknowledging the bad, we can better appreciate the good, and when he got it right, he really got it right.
Even this movie is at least watchable because of Williams.
***** Hardly.
lurch321
Did you know that despite what Walker has said, this movie has fans? I suggest you learn to accept that.
lurch321
Good enough for me.
that "emotional death scene" between Adams and the dad of those kids pissed me off so much
I mean shaking the head and thumping it against the pillow? No child should see such a horrible performance.
I can understand why Hunter Adams hate this movie
did you hear the message at the end of the review????
He addressed this in his fuck-up countdowns.
Ah. Okay.
+cyanmanta No he didnt? I watched both and he never mentions patch adams.
+Infu-p there's a third one
Correct. My psychaitrist prescibes all of my medicine.
I just came here to see people defending this piece of crap because the main actor died. Internet, oh Internet, you rarely disappoint. (No I do not hate R. Williams, I'm just sick of the sudden lifetime fanbase).
I think if anyone wanted to pay respect by watching one of his movies i doubt it would be this piece of shit
It's the Michael Jackson effect. People bitched about his moonwalker review too.
Michael jackson was a legend even when he was alive. I can see that nc didn't like it because it wasn't a movie. It was a compilation of music videos at the most.
"Well, I guess it is, seeing as how the vomit-inducing happy music is playing louder than a _Full House_ episode!"
I laughed so hard!!
I wonder if the real Patch Adams has seen this review
+Andrew Kuder (BlueGuy98) He hated this movie and I don't blame him one bit.

+Jack Hamilton mommy took the kitchen knife to defend herself

The only good thing about this movie is Robin Williams Everything else is crap
you are right

How many people had a moment of "OH, God" when they said Patch is suicidal?
+Josie Alyvia not many
Know what u mean
+Josie Alyvia It's actually kind of eerie how many of Robin's films deal with suicide, or mention suicide. "Dead Pet's Society" being another example.
Can't blame good casting
+InvaderPet Many of his movies are quite depressing.
If you focus on the problem, you can't see the solution."_
You're not asking him to figure out a problem.
Taking career and/or life advice from a mental patient. Thank you, hollywood. Thank you.

I met a schizophrenic man who told me hedgehogs had secret earpieces and would convey back and forth information to the government. good advice I will take to my grave
j syder I should have known those prickly bastards were up to something...
My uncle thinks the government experimented on him in 'nam..... He says they poisoned him with potassium? Is that even possible? Also he thinks he's been cloned but his clones are for some reason all Vietnamese. Whatever. It's nowhere near as good as the hedgehog earpiece thing.
Whitney c Doesn't mean that it's a bad piece of advice. It's not like all mental patients are drooling idiots just because of their conditions.
Every actor was in a bad movie, and this was the one for Williams. Rest in Peace man, you'll never be forgotten.
Robin Williams had a few...
@@yaninapaula3636Most of them were bad. He was way tolerable as a villain of his movies.
Robin Williams playing someone that's suicidal.
.....
.....
This is extremely awkward, and not in a good way...
Otaking Mikohani blah
If Robin fell off a cliff in real life, it would be more tragic.
Otaking Mikohani is there such a thing as awkward in a good way?

Otaking Mikohani i was suicidel and they put me in a room with a guy similar to that person climbing the wall screaming. it was 2001
I could watch this particular review over and over again
Patch Adams 2: He Steals from Hospitals
I too found that pretty darn funny. The movie poster gave me a good chuckle.
I went to We Day a few years back and Patch Adams was one of the speakers there. He was incredibly inspirational for all of the youth there :)
Thuy-Linh Vu 😎
am I the only one reminded of Mulan when the teacher says "I'm going to make a doctor out of you"?
I remember hearing Hunter Adams hating this film so much that he even told Roger Ebert himself that he detested it.
That face NC made after clown Doc said "wait for it", had me in stitches!
Every single time The Critic mentions orthodoxy and its respective levels I lose it. This, along with Tom and Jerry, are his best reviews. Both passionate, funny as hell and his criticisms are brilliantly articulated.
the thumbnail looks like Critic is honking Patch’s nose just in a violent and angry way.
Robin Williams AND Philip Seymour Hoffman AND Robin Williams' character was suicidal?! ..............Yikes.
Yeah, I know..scary, right?YourGoldenRetriever
I have hated this movie since 1998! Thank you for explaining why so thoroughly. I have never been able to convey what is so wrong with it adequately.
ArnellaMaturin I completely agree. This movie sucked!
This movie is a disgrace not only to Dr. Adams and his work
but to Robin Williams's legacy as well
fuck this movie
+ChemoBiotic 100% true.

"First: we will heal patients, and then: the World."
*Evil Laugh*
*Thunder*
That made my day.
Seeing Robin Williams and Phillip Seymour Hoffman in the same shot here is getting me teary-eyed. Two of the greats, taken in the same year. :(
For everyone that insults the critic because robin williams is dead....well...a)this review came out before his death and b)because a good actor is dead doesn't mean that all of his works are good....i feel like that's the case with many people, they are good when they are alive but they are LEGENDARY when they die....or quit one or the other
Your actually right.
PokePanda MCRmy
But it portrayed the REAL Patch Adams in a ridiculous and unreal way.
It's the artist effect. When someone is alive people will be fair and criticize their works or outright hate them, but once they're dead suddenly everything they ever did is a masterpiece and perfect.
Cursedwind Licence to wed sucked and that had Robin Williams in it with Mandy Moore.
"We are not on the same level as them, WE ARE HEALTHY!"
LOL
Robin Williams will Always be missed, but you guys gotta admit, he did make some Bad Shit in his life.
Ok but, how is this unofficial reupload of an NC episode is at near perfect 720p quality and the _original_ upload on Channel Awesome's channel from back when it came out is in 240p?
I kind of wish Dr. Bitch Spasms were a recurring character.
Like Kenny from South Park, it'd be funny if he died every time he shows up.
It Might Be A Bit Insensitive, What With The Passing Of Robin Williams.
TheDreReichDude Who's Prejudice Joe?
Seriously?
I was overjoyed when Critic shot this annoying fucker.
Do I have the feeling this movie feels like a HUGE promotional ad of Big Red Nose day?
I feel the same way (Walgreens has that day..I think of this movie..BIG RED NOISE (Doug's just mentioning it now as I write lol ha ha)
This is the most genuinely angry I think I've ever seen Mr Critic get! Feels like he wan't even acting during most of this, you can feel the intense hate in his voice almost all of the way through!
This ain't nothing compared to his Michael Bay rant.
this might be true
The movie took an actually amazing person and made a joke of his work, I would be mad too.
I am mad!
He wasn't the only one. The real Patch Adams did NOT enjoy this as he said. At least he harbors no ill will toward Williams anymore.
Funny fact. Greg Sestero who played Mark in The Room was an extra in Patch Adams. Shitty movies are linked by karma.
Uncle Joe & Neon Cherry I’m reading his book about The Room, very good so far.
RIP Robin Williams. Not quite my favorite Robin Williams film but it's still sad to learn about his passing.
5:29 rip Philip Seymour Hoffman
Rest in peace, Robin. Absolute legend and a shining inspiration to everyone.
WOW!!! The murdered female love interest was 100% fiction? Did some studio exec see the ending of Titanic and tried to milk off its success with a star crossed lovers plot, conclusion being a tragic death?
When did patch Adams come out?
Rick Steck Oh. Re-read the comment. Derp.
+Agent of Chaos Actually, it's one. Titanic came out in 1997 while this one came out in 1998, the same year Roland Emmerich's Godzilla came out.
God that LOTR soundtrack fits this review so well :DD
These older videos are so much better and funnier than the new ones with the extras
+Robintheboywonder4 Well, here are the differences:
(Those actors he has doing the sketches nowadays are just horribly unfunny.)
It's time for Doug to throw out all these horrible half-baked sketches and just get back to good old Nostalgia Critic.
The Dork Knight ""Suspend your disbelief" is bullshit when you're seeing a movie about a real person/real event."
A greater truth has never been spoken. It's hilarious how people can call for "suspension of disbelief" on a movie that sells itself as "based on a true story". It is true, but don't believe it!!
FernieCanto Next year, see the remake of Apollo 13, where the "accident" is actually caused by Martians firing on the ship. "Based on a true story."
The Dork Knight
Why do I get this feeling that if it's Hollywood, "based on a true story" is anything but?
Should there be a new law against it?
"Films that bear the tagline 'based on a true story' carry the death penalty"
Watching it again. Hard to believe Robin is 7 years passed August 11th.
That stereotype of women who seem tough and cold but are in reality crippled by their emotions? ELSA. THAT'S ELSA RIGHT THERE. It's the number one reason I hate that movie.
*THANK YOU*. I have no idea why she's praised as some pillar of strength and female empowerment when she's really the farthest thing from it.
ElectricMayhem87 (Ashleigh) Amen!
+April Jones But you're a pastafarian!
Cinestar Productions I've been Touched By His Noodly Appendages, yes.
I think there's a difference between isolation, and acting like a bitch. When did Elsa ever act cold and bitter?
"My whole life... men had been attracted to me."
Whats the fucking problem with that?
Stringy Iguana I wondered that too. Why does the film treat men being attracted to her her whole life as some kind of tragic backstory?
Xehanort10 Yeah I know right! It's not like shes lesbian...
Stringy Iguana Even she herself said she wasn't a lesbian.
Xehanort10 Lol!
Stringy Iguana
"My whole life..." implies that men have been attracted to her even when she was a small child. In the totally wrong way.
Almost every Nostalgia Critic Robin Williams review someone says "Doesnt Doug feels sorry now?" like he made fun of Robin Williams, not the movie. Nostalgia Critic reviewed movies made by people who already passed away, and yet he doesnt get the same flak (Besides Mako)
I bet, if a celebrety died and was in one of Dougs reviewed, someone is going to say "I bed Doug feels sorry about making this review now"
Everyone dies eventually, so... we can never criticize or make jokes about anyone in these people's minds? How sad...
ElectricMayhem87 People who complain about criticism of actors and actresses after they die were probably insane fanboys and fangirls of the actor when they were alive anyway and they probably think any actor or actress they like is immune to criticism just because they like them. .
***** He also got crap for his _Moonwalker_ review after Michael Jackson died.
realitywarper93 Yeah. Whenever he reviews a film with a dead actor or actress in it there's always some idiots who assume he did the review after they died to mock them and make fun of their deaths. It never seems to occur to them that Doug might have done the review before the actor or actress in the movie died.
Okay, Dr. Bitchspasms is annoying, but I love the noise he makes.
I'm guessing this movie works better in reverse.
Saw a preview of this when I was young, and merely thought it was a movie about a doctor-clown. Little did I know I was pretty spot-on.
Hey, it's Doug's birthday, by Nov.17! Happy upcoming birthday, Nostalgia Cirtic (and we'll remember your birthdaty, uh, so you don't have to!)
First time watching since William's death. NC's quote "Even though he's; clearly the king of masking insecurity himself." Damn.
8:41 When you make a joke and start waiting for them to get it.
Is it bad that the Dean was also the Warden from Shawshank Prison?
Now that's what I call a serious downgrade.
I love how most of the comments in this section are people talking about claims I haven't seen in this comment section so far.
He seriously needs to review the Fisher King
+TheDreReichDude Yeah, and he directed Doug's #1 favourite movie: Brazil.
TheDreReichDude
It also had Michael Jeter (who was Robin's mental ward roommate in Patch Adams) appear in that movie as well.
"Donner, party of 50."
Is this in reference to that group, the Donner party, that got lost in the mountains during winter, and ended up cannibalizing each other? Because that is a shitty joke to make.
+Crystal Floyd And worst of all, its not funny.
Patch Adams: He steals from hospitals. I WOULDN'T SEE THAT!
RIP Robin Williams.
Mathew Clemence Well, an ironic RIP (fitting for the opening scenes) to the great Robin Williams.
We all miss you robin Williams
Mathew Clemence he did I'm sorry
Mathew Clemence he did I'm sorry
21:10 Whoa, that is f*cked up, man. I mean, seriously, did the filmmakers really believed they could make a great dramedy out of this?! I'm sorry, I know, RIP Robin Williams, but *WTF?!* Such shame they bring to themselves.
Doug Walker about Robin Williams death:
"Wow. Words fail me for the moment. Just wow."
I trust Dr. Mario more than Patch Adams
That's true
The real Patch Adams did not see one cent from this movie. He was not given royalties or compensation. Plus, they got his story wrong.
Anyone else rewatching this due to light of recent events?
me.
Yep... T_T
Sad isn't it?
Wesley Washington Hey we have similar image profile photos
***** Sweet!
