    The most WTF thing about the I Am Legend theatrical ending is how it betrays the actual title of the movie. It's called "I Am Legend" not because Will saves humanity and becomes legendary for it. No, it's because he is the "Legend" the NEW breed of humans talk about. The one that comes during the day. The one that takes them away. The one they FEAR. That's some deep sh*t o.o

      the big problem here is that I am legend isn't a movie based on the book "I am legend" by Matheson, is the remake of "The omega man", a 1971 movie directed by Boris Sagal with protagonist Charlton Heston loosely based on the book, the ending is pretty much the same

      i like to look at it like this instead of one ending being happy the other sad they're both a happy ending since the mutants in the film when they had emotions there could be hope for humanity to continue. not only that but it could be looked at like this: the mutants are the next stage of human evolution so either way humanity will continue.

    • @KhaosFrosty
      @KhaosFrosty 7 лет назад +68

      +True Ruffler The beginnings of the mutation caused them to be very aggressive. Once it goes away, it's all good. Unfortunately by then, other people had either left, died, or also mutated. In the movie, they were only being aggressive in self-defense, because HE was the one hunting them.

      @Team Plasma Unofficial Did you not read the book at all? In the book, the main character considered them to be Vampires, and so did the "mutants", they are photosensitive after all. He did so many tests, they were repelled by Garlic and other legends of the sort. He kept going out during the day and killing them while they slept
      In the book they had a full on Government and Civilization, he was taken by them and he was to be tried for his crimes against them, and that was when he realized he was the Boogeyman, he was the thing that went bump in the day. They were not wiping out a single person, it was just merely an infection that swept through the world and when it killed people, they got back up and were essentially undead vampire-like creatures.

    I remember having a DVD of a special SpongeBob episode with the Flying Dutchman. It was special because it has three possible endings. The Flying Dutchman gives Squidward Patrick and SpongeBob a chance to go home it all depends on the last wish that he gives them. if you chose the episode ending where Patrick gets the last wish he wishes for a pack of gum, if you choose SpongeBob they all go back home and everything is normal, if you choose Squidward something goes wrong with his wish and they end up in a blender and the Flying Dutchman is a hippy making smoothies eating them. Well, it also turns out that the original ending to "Little Shop of Horrors" was also much more true to the stage version, where the plants won and the heroes and other people died off. However, the difference was that, apparently, people could still see the actors coming out and taking a bow to the audience, which assured the audience that they were still alright. In a movie, you couldn't do that, and nobody liked that ending. So they had to change it and make it a happy ending. Eventually, though, people found out about the alternate ending, and grew intrigued by it.

    • @MoonShadowWolfe

      mmmmm well......not quite. the original stage version has the plants take over the world with the song "don't feed the plant", including eating the entire audience in the theater, much like the movie. but being a stage show, in order to represent that, all the characters come out on stage to join in singing "don't feed the plant" and it's a very "yay!!! we're all dead in a plant's belly!!!!" kind of number that while quite dark, definitely is still very comedic. the movie can't break the 4th wall the same way the stage show can. i mean, they try with audrey ii looking like its breaking through the projection screen to attack you, but it ends up coming out a lot more mean-spirited without the whole cast singing along. coupled with the fact that movie audiences, especially for a big budget hollywood film starring rick moranis, are going to expect a straightforward happy ending much more than someone going to an off-broadway show is.....the original ending unfortunately never had a chance.
      TL;DR: it's not the curtain call that makes the difference, it's the cast singing along and being present in the finale. plus theater (esp off-broadway theater, which this was, little shop didn't make it to broadway till well after the movie came out) can get away with a lot more edgy shit than hollywood can.

Not so much your modern movie goer, so much as your modern wrestling fan. Not smart enough to separate reality from fiction.
      So no, it has nothing to do with reassuring the audience that the actors weren't killed during filming...did you really think that had something to do with it?
      it's really simple. just as the 1906 people were in need of some maturing to understand the difference between real and fake. modern audience have become more accepting of an ending that isn't happy than audiences were prepared for in the 80's and 90's. Generally if a movie had a downer ending it did poorly at the box office. Some movies did well, but most of them a dark ending was a box office death sentence. Prime example of what i'm talking about. you would have NEVER had a movie end like avengers infinity war. big block buster the culmination of a decades work in film. nobody would have EVER put a downer ending on that movie if it were made even 20 years ago. now they ended it with the villains smile...he won. incredible you made your entire movie universe up to that point amount to nothing, all of it ended up being pointless and nobody was mad. in fact they would have been furious if they had changed one of the most shocking things in comic book history.
      still...I bet the producers were shitting bricks until that first box office return.

      I remember watching the musical before I knew there was a movie of it with a bit of a feeling of discomfort and dread (even though I liked it). The world being doomed seemed so dark, and the characters coming back as buds didn't seem comedic. They just seemed like another warning that the stronger the plants got, the more buds, and the more spores they would release.

    Although shot poorly, I kind of like the concept of the first Clerks ending, if only because of the lines "Bunch of savages in this town" and "I wasn't even supposed to be here today!" It's a real dark bit of irony to cap off every instance of those two lines.

      I prefer the happy ending. IIRC, test audiences *loved* the movie... until the end. Frank Oz posited that unlike a play where everyone comes out at the end and takes a bow, in a movie it's different and the audience became invested in the characters and felt cheated when they were killed off. I get the reason for the dark ending and some people do prefer it, but for whatever reason, I just love the happy ending with a slightly dark twist.

    The Clerks original ending, I'd heard, was a way to end it on a down note. The whole discussion about the best Star Wars film ending on a down note, and Dante saying "real life is a series of down notes" was kind of a foreshadowing. I agree, the ending they chose was much better, but the original ending did make sense in it's own way.

  • @SEGASister

    I've heard a lot of people who enjoy the _Little Shop of Horrors_ musical despise the theatrical ending, mainly because it takes away from the moral of the story: "don't feed the plants". Seymour's selfish, and selfless, desires are the cause to Audrey II's success, but in the theatrical release of the film, he comes off as completely okay with letting people die to get what he wants, and he doesn't even have to pay for it. The original cut had not only this alternate ending, but a cut song called, "The Meek Shall Inherit", about Seymour's rise to success, but he's conflicted about no longer desiring to kill for it, and wanting to impress Audrey. He knows what he's doing is wrong, he hates himself for it… but he doesn't want to lose Audrey's love. That Seymour, I like more than in the theatrical cut.

    • @SEGASister
      @SEGASister 7 лет назад +10

      The 1989 film, _Heathers_ was also going to have a downer ending before going with the final cut. In the original ending, Veronica Sawyer dies by holding the bomb and winds up blowing up her school in the process, ending with a prom in Heaven with everyone drinking the drainer fluid that killed Heather Chandler. It was never released, and Winona Ryder apparently had a big speech before blowing herself, and the school up that I honestly want to find and read.

      Producers, Studios and the rest of Hollywood businessmen are hit and miss when it comes to making changes to the movies.
      Just look up times studio interference made a movie better, it's shocking how many times the writers or directors ideas were worse and some random studio businessman had a better idea that in turn made the movie better. But it's also on par when they mess up a movie.

      K-C Rhoder the sailor Mayun - Oh yeah, I doubt many people could argue with you (rationally) from that view point on this channel. I suspect people who watch Nostalgia Critic would probably prefer a profound story over a "happy ending".
      Some of my favorite books have bitter sweet endings, I don't really like the ending because not everyone gets what they want, but I find that realism... we're not all going to get some fairy tail ending of our lives.

    • @Atratzu
      @Atratzu 7 лет назад +18

      Shigeru Miyamoto Sama - I totally agree and get that. However, having an ending like the one we saw would have suddenly changed the tone of the movie. True at the start they were killing all willy nilly, but from the protagonists perspective we never really knew what they were thinking?
      And that's the whole thing, we don't know what they're thinking, we don't think they're intelligent, and then suddenly at the end of the movie BAM, they're actually intelligent and not necessarily ruthless zombie killers, whaaaaat?
      Like said, I'd prefer a more complex story, rather then will smith blowing himself up to be a badass and take them all with him. (It's an okay ending I guess... but the alternative ending WOULD leave an impact)

    The alt ending to clerks feels oddly fitting to me. For someone whose catchphrase was "im not even supposed to be here today" to get murdered at the end makes it feel like fate was at work, and it also would seemingly ask the question "how much of yourself do you give to your job?" i mean, if the guy hadnt gone above and beyond to show up on his day off to his minimum wage job he hates to make his asshole boss happy out of some sense of duty or being a good employee he would still be alive. In retrospect, it seems silly to show such devotion to a person that would fire you in a heartbeat or to a job that pays the most minimum of wages.
    Another bit of commentary that could be gleaned from the alt ending(whether intentional or not) would be how random and short life can be. This movie seemed to be a fairly typical day for this character, a "slice of life". A movie like that ending with the main characters death seems to say "it can happen at any time, folks!" A comedy ending with such a depressing message probably isnt the right tone, but its interesting none the less.

    The original ending of "Little Shop of Horrors" makes more sense when you consider the other scenes that were deleted from the Theatrical Cut. The Workprint includes more graphic edits of Seymour feeding the plant and the full version of "The Meek Shall Inherit", in which Seymour makes a Faustian bargain to keep feeding the plant in exchange for Audrey's affection. These scenes change Seymour's character and the film's tone overall; none of the deleted footage is featured in the "Director's Cut", just the original ending, which is literally tacked on.

    *Clerks* -- Dante wasn't "even supposed to be here today." Fate fucked him one last time.
    The alternate ending is the ultimate culmination of a running bit. I haven't even seen the movie, and I'm aware of this scene's purpose. Kevin Smith saying he wasn't sure how to end the film doesn't change the fact this choice was a reference to an ongoing theme in the film.

    • @cockroachcharlie5619
      @cockroachcharlie5619 7 лет назад +8

      Not really, in my opinion. The entire "I'm not even supposed to be here today" gag is actually resolved a little earlier. It is like, totally resolved. It ends up bringing together the larger message of the film. The ending, at best, is just one more possible event in the life of a convenience store clerk and a rather tragic one at that.
      If you've ever worked at a convenience store, (I won't say you have or have not) you would recognize some of the things that would seem unreal and downright impossible, and know that some of that shit REALLY DOES HAPPEN. And frankly, this story goes gentle on some of the more lunatic and regular occurrences one sees. So the ending was just one more of these events, but the dark reality just doesn't really jive with the rest of the tone of the film.

    Totally agree with your take on "I am Legend" The alternate ending provides a 180 degree shift in the way we see the protagonist. It elevates the movie to a masterpiece. All the gruesome lab photos and the scenes where he mows them down his car make sense when we see him in this new light.

    SPOILERS? My mother has taught and teaches a Post-Apocalyptic Literature class and a Film Adaptation class, so we've become pretty familiar with I am Legend at this point. The original novella is spectacular (seriously, read it), but has never really adapted well. The Will Smith alternate ending is the closest a film adaptation has come to the overall idea of the book ("I Am Legend" refers to the fact that he's the boogeyman one whispers of for the new species of vampiric humans dominating the Earth). The Omega Man and The Last Man On Earth are also adaptations of I Am Legend. Each film focuses on a different aspect of the novella, and each approach is dramatic in how varied it is from the others. However, the most interesting difference that is consistent in each ending, other than the fact that none of them really capture the message the author was trying to portray, is the cure. In the book, he never finds the cure. In every single film adaptation, he has. In The Last Man On Earth, they lose it at the cost of his life. In The Omega Man, they gain it at the cost of his life. In Will Smith's I Am Legend, they gain it at the cost of his life, or he decides not to use it and to forever be outcast in the new order. It's an interesting distinction that we've debated often. If you like "vampire" stuff or are interested in film or literature, I HIGHLY recommend checking out the novella and the films for yourself. If anything, it's interesting finding out who you and your friends think did it best and why.

      I believe I WILL check it out. Do the "vampires" in the novella develop any kind of society? Or are they the denizens portrayed in film?

    • @JustDaisy
      @JustDaisy 7 лет назад +17

      They're a lot less like bald speedy monsters and more on the shuffle-y human side. Most of the book is from the protagonists POV, and he generally only sees them when they're lethargic during the day or hears them outside his house at night. Signs of civilization don't come in until the very end of the book. I'm pretty sure it came out sometime around the '50s, but isn't corny except for one or two very minor details.

    Lion King 2 had an alternate ending (okay I know this part isn't RIGHT at the ending but it's close enough to the end) dealing with Zira's death. In the original, she fell to her death before Kiara could help her up but in the deleted scene when Kiara says "I'll help you", Zira goes "No....neverrrrrr" in a very creepy voice and then willingly lets go of the cliff and falls to her death with a huge smile on her face. Soooo yeah, she commits suicide in the original ending.

    Even though I'm not a big fan of The Butterfly Effect, I do remember there being two different endings, if I recall correctly. I don't remember which was the theatrical version and which one was the director's cut, but I'm guessing the sadder one is the director's cut. In one version, I think he simply goes back and breaks things off with a girl he cares about. And in the WTF version I'm thinking of, he goes back to the day he was born and makes it so he was a stillborn. I was half-expecting to see that on this list just because of how sad and depressing it was.

    • @dertdobber
      @dertdobber 7 лет назад +10

      shinmusashi44 that's only mentioned in the Director's Cut of the film, certain scenes that were supposed to lead up to him doing that were taken out because with the theatrical ending they don't go anywhere. The creators definitely made the film with the original ending in mind and those scenes add another layer to the story, but even so I feel like it's a bit of a cop out to have him just kill himself since he was trying to change the timeline to make it better for everyone around him, and it's an interesting idea that removing himself would in fact do that but at the same time he just ends up screwing over his mom who's now had 4 stillborns in a row. It also feels like a bit of a ripoff of Donnie Darko's ending, which also went with the "reverse It's a Wonderful Life" ending and the two films are already tonally similar enough that making it just another time travel film at least makes the film its own thing.

Seymour crawled into the plant with a machete to try and kill it, only to get eaten. ^ Well it's really simple. See, the gem drops into the ocean, but if you do enough research, you will realize this gem is actually designed to perform supernatural feats when in contact with water and salt. So this gem then gets tangled in some seaweed and mutates into a weird sea creature. This sea creature travels to Transylvania and captures humans, sucking their blood. This legend inspired a writer to create the Dracula series, amplifying the idea and concept of vampires, where Tommy Wiseau soon discovered and included the same concept in the original ending for his movie "The Room." In the story, the car would have flown into a strange space-time rift that would transform the vampire and car into a mutated Tommy Wiseau, who would then fall into a pit of acid and transform into the Joker.
      Totally true and not improvised, I swear, I did my research.

    My favorite alternate ending is Scott Pilgrim VS the world's alternate ending, where he does end up with Knives instead of Ramona. To me, as a huge fan of the books that would give me much more respect for the movie as a different story about the chasing of toxic relationships and the issues it can cause, compared to the theatrical ending where it just feels like the books, watered down and stripped of character development.

    • @conman_yt7999

    • @AkiraStrix94
      @AkiraStrix94 10 месяцев назад +1

      I like to think the theatrical ending was chosen for a few good reasons if you actually think about it. Some fans might forget the obvious age gap between Knives and Scott, but there's also the fact that she ended up with Kim in the books. It's not shown in the movie, but it is shown in the new animated series. Something else I think some fans might have forgotten, Scott only dated Knives because he didn't want to be reminded of getting his heart broken by Envy Adams, not because of the chemistry that already wasn't there in the movie.
      Hell, when he fights Gideon a second time in the film, he at least has his redemption arc and apologizes to both Ramona and Knives for hurting them both, and the second Gideon even hurts Ramona, Knives helps Scott kick his ass into next week. Scott wasn't that great a guy, but he's not completely horrible either.
      All that said, I didn't read any of the original books, I don't think the relationship with Scott and Knives works, for the same reason I personally don't like the relationship between Sonic the Hedgehog and Amy Rose. They just feel more like brother and sister, I can't bring myself to see them as boyfriend and girlfriend because it just feels so forced. If you beat the video game as Knives and get her ending, she does marry Scott, but that's just played for laughs.

    I have this theory that the diamond from Titanic was actually worthless; then it would actually make sense that she'd throw it away instead of using it to help poor people who'd need the money. Billy Zane's character clearly didn't care about Rose as a person, so sharing something of his that was extremely valuable almost seems of out character for him, but if he gave her a fake diamond as a cheap way of trying to win her affections, it KIND of makes sense.

      I believe differently about that. I think the diamond wasn't worthless to Rose, it was priceless. It was the only reminder she had of Jack. It was with her throughout the sinking, when Jack drew her, and when she made her promise to live a long life. She threw it back into the ocean because she had fulfilled her promise. And I find it symbolic that her second life would end where it began (if you believe she died at the very end that is).

    I know it was never actually an alternate ending, since it was never written or filmed or anything, but anyone who's read "I, Robot" and knows the ending would agree that the movie had a terrible ending in comparison. The actual book is more of a collection of stories depicting robots rise throughout history, compared to the short narrative the movie had. Anyway, in the book's ending humanity thinks they have robots fully under control and are looking into a few errors that robot workers have made, and end up discovering that robots are intentionally making mistakes in order to make humans feel needed. It's revealed that the robots have been in control for years, and are just humoring the humans at this point, and humanity never had a chance. That's a much more interesting ending to me.

      Yeah, I really disagree with Doug's opinion; the original ending is the real one. It's a comedy, but the structure is a Faustian story; those don't have happy endings! Taking away the part where the protagonist loses everything and realizes that none of it was worth it makes it a different kind of story altogether; they took a Faust story, cut off part of it, and stuck a comedic happy ending in its place. There's all the foreshadowing of misery and comeuppance for Seymour's crimes that's just left hanging that way. Maybe someone likes that, but to me, what was the point? You can get happy endings anywhere. Deal With the Devil stories are made for your rare complete downers. With do-wop music!

      It is, just drawn out a little more. In the original musical (or at least the version I saw of it) Seymour tells the plant that after they take the photo for time magazine tomorrow morning the plant is getting cut off and offers the plant meat from a store to hold it over until then. The plant agrees but only because it sees a drunk Audrey nearby looking for Seymour. The plant tricks Audrey into getting eaten and by the time Seymour gets back he pulls Audrey out of the plant's mouth but it's too late and she dies telling Seymour that she wants to be fed to the plant to help out Seymour through her death. Then the next morning Seymour tries to kill the plant resorting to jumping inside the plant since nothing else worked. This doesn't work and the plant just winds up killing him. Then the man who came by to replicate the plants does and the ladies sing the final song where they talk about how the plants destroyed several other cities via the song "don't feed the plants". The destruction in the original theatrical ending is not actually shown but it is heavily implied to the point of being almost stated that there are big plant monsters scattered all over the US and that there are a huge amount of casualties as a result, if the humans are able to win at all.

The mother also said something like "Not again!" implying in the past she might had other children who had the same time traveling powers.

      The original was hinted to quite a bit. I didn't see it myself the first time; Maven's episode talks more about the various ways the original cut sets up the original ending. Some of that setup is removed in the theatrical version, though. You should check out the original cut, or her episode if you haven't already.

Even if it hadn't been a hit at the time, people would found more appreciation for it later down the line, and like Doug said, would have had a more timeless effect. And Holland has absolutely nothing dramatic, except his death in Infinity War and Tony Stark death... which weren’t even in his solo movies... oh and when we’re talking about Tony’s death in Far From Home, it is totally at odds with Homecoming morality...

    For me, the biggest WTF ending is the alternate ending for Terminator 2, where It shows an Old Sarah telling that the robots near took over and Johnw as now a senator. It's probably more shocking when you realize that with this ending, the Sequels and downturn for the franchise would have never happened...

    • @davidminor4213
      @davidminor4213 4 года назад +2

      Even though it would have ended the franchise, it's actually a pretty dumb ending in itself. T2 is a classic, but it does have one major plot hole --- Why doesn't John fade away like Marty McFly if they actually changed the future?
      Frankly, Sarah waking up in 1984 from a bad dream would be corny as hell but actually realistic.
      Looking back, it's easy to say they should have gone with it so we don't have any more sequels. But in itself, that ending makes zero sense.
      I actually like T3. Not like T1 or T2 of course. It's far from perfect but to me, it actually wraps up the story. I originally hated it, because 1) Sarah dies off-screan and 2) John is broken. However, even then I liked the character of Kathrine and I liked how there were other targets besides John.
      Looking back, adult John with Arnold, his future wife and his MOM .... that's corny. John and Sarah work better with John as a boy. Frankly, Sarah wasn't even necessary in T2 .... But I'm happy she was there.
      John being broken makes sense really. Averting Judgement Day is a good thing, but what's he supposed to do now? And his only family member is dead! He does get a good arc tho.
      Lastly, Judgement Day happens! That was awesome!!
      Imo, Terminator is a trilogy!

    In the DVD audio commentary, screenwriter Jonathan Hensleigh claims that this version was dropped because the studio thought it showed a more cruel and menacing side to McClane, a man who killed for revenge rather than in self-defense. The studio was also displeased with the lack of action in the scene, feeling that it didn't fit as a "climax" and therefore chose to reshoot the finale as an action sequence at a significant monetary cost. Hensleigh's intention was to show that the events in New York and the subsequent repercussions had tilted McClane psychologically. This alternative ending, set some time after the film's main events, would have marked a serious break from the Die Hard formula, in which the plot unfolds over a period of roughly 12 hours

    How about the first Butterfly Effect movie? Not only it had 4 (!) different endings, but the one director originally insisted on was so shocking on the test audiences, they had to rewrite the finale entirely.
    Then, we have the Blade Runner with the happy ending that literally ruined the film for most of the critics. The later re-releases that featured an "open-end" and a slightly altered montage, became a huge success bringing the film to its deserved "cult" status.
