    Soil is one of the most misunderstood and miscommunicated topics in the wine industry. That’s why I rarely discuss the soils of specific regions and appellations. BUT soil does play an essential role in viticulture, therefore let’s discuss how soil actually impacts the style and quality of wine!

    i teach ecosystem ecology and this video covered many of the topics I have been stressing to my students. In fact I shared it with them. it is very authoritative on the role of soils for water holding capacity, their role is soil nutrition and helping maintain and foster microbial health and biodiversity with less compaction and cover crops. thanks

    I think I've said this already, but seriously, by far the biggest source of value in your channel comes from the selection of topics. These are things that need to be said and discussed, also driving away some "less-than-scientific" ideas and practices which, even though they are colourful and sound exciting and magical, they are nevertheless wrong and do less good than harm. Thanks!

    At last someone setting straight the "minerals make 'minerality' in wine" fairy tale! Very well done Agnes!
    A long while ago I watched a documentary where they investigated mycorrhiza and the impact that Glyphosate has on it, not just wine but (agricultural) plants in general. Iirc they found evidence that what we in wine perceive as "minerality" (when it's not reduction that is mistaken for it) is actually the metabolic end products of the mycorrhiza and, in consequence, bacteria that live around the roots. When they showed what Glyphosate does to that wonderful micro-ecosystem it brought tears to my eyes: the roots are literally crippeled to a stump.

      YES! Thank You, I know what You mean. When I am looking at these documentaries and how we people, ourselves ruin what nature has given us, I am also devastated. Therefore, everything in our lives should be in balance, including our relationship with the nature. 🥂

    I think those debates over the influence of soil in "mineral flavours" are blind to the viticultural reality and take for granted the actual role of soil, which you have explained very well in 10 minutes. If the soils didn't allow the vine to grow healthy, then we would have an empty cup on the table and would be pointless to discuss about "rocky" notes

    Hi Agnes, it was a really good clip to watch an more important to listen at. I don't have green fingers and I have great respect to all those farmers that can tmake the most of it in every year changing weather/climate conditions. I tip my head to all winemakers that understeand so well the very complex combinations between plant, ground, water, climate...and humans. thank God there are so many in the world. Cheers Agnes

    I don't think there is controversy about the importance of soil. Where there is debate is whether what some call minerality in the wine is really minerality. We may not be able to feel the taste of of certain type of soil, but it definitely has an impact on the wine.

    • @NoSediment
      @NoSediment  4 месяца назад +1

      I do think there is, many think that soils importance in wine is linked with its flavours, You almost never hear wine enthusiasts talk about stress of the wine due to water or nutrient deficiency. When actually it is other way around.

    Soil isn't as important in a world of super-clones. Through clones we can choose what nutrients, stages and end vegetative product we'll have. That's a good thing and a terrible thing.

    • @NoSediment
      @NoSediment  3 месяца назад

      I am not sure I can agree. I read one study done by AWRI and the clone actually didn’t have such an impact, it was really dependent on the weather. And grape that needed to have loose bunches actually had tight one year and loose the other. Soil definitely is more important than clone, I would argue. But maybe I don’t know what is super clone 😬🫣
