I know exactly we’re that particular creek is, from the first scene and then when you got to the causeway, was a dead give away. My dads country but grew up and went diving there all the time. Always was guaranteed a feed of sooty Grunter (black bream) and JP’s. Great spot! 😎👍🏾

Man, it doesn’t get any much than Jungle Perch on foot in my opinion. Such an insane looking fish!
& those Khaki Grunter looked like stacks of fun too. Are they a seperate species than Sooties, or just a local name or something?

Liam Fitzpatrick trout fishing is more about where you are and stalking etc.
I would say it’s similar to what you were doing here but in colder water and not for fish that are as awesome.
      I still enjoy it though.

Some creeks you do. Probably most you should but I know a few of these systems and have fished them a few times. When you really high up your good it’s just when it’s low lying with big slow moving pools I get really cautious.

This started as a general comment, but turned into a novel. I blame Jack Daniels. Hopefully there is something of use in here for all who read it.
I used to fish for JP's when i was a young bloke... I'm talking over 35 years ago. I'm no expert but I did fish for them consistently for about 5 years of my teenage life and I did learn a few things. Here are a list of the rules that I followed.
    1. The first cast is the most important. If you screw it up, there's a good chance you'll miss the best fish in the spot, or at worst, spook everything. Casting accuracy is king!
    2. JP's are ambush predators. They'll thump anything falling out of a tree (see point 5) or being washed downstream. The higher you get up the creeks and into rainforest, the more likely you are to encounter fast flowing water and rapids. Look for deeper pools with tree overhangs, or eddys to the side of flowing rapids. Think like a fish trying to conserve energy and ambush everything and you will do well.
    3. If you haven't caught anything after 4 casts at a good spot, you won't catch a JP. They spook real easy. Sure, they'll keep following, but no way will they strike. (It was not uncommon for us to walk and fish over 5km in a single session, one or two fish per pond. Always catch and release I might add.)
    4. Always walk upstream. You have a much lower chance of spooking the fish.
    5. Try to stay hidden. The water is astonishingly clear and the JP's appear to have phenomenal eyesight. We found that 50% of the fish would hit on the lure literally as soon as it hit the water. If you had an elevated clear view of the cast and the fish, you could see the buggers following it to the landing spot!
    6. We exclusively used shallow diving lures. Little rapalas and nilsmasters were best. Nothing that went further than a foot deep. (This was before soft plastics and jigs became mainstream. I've never used them on JP's so can't really comment on their effectiveness.) Deep divers were only good for sooty grunter.
    7. (This one might have helped you Liam!) We found that the fish always attack from underneath and hit the middle of the lure. 90% of fish we hooked would latch on to the middle hook on the underside of the lure. I can't help but think that maybe your jigs with upturned hooks were missing strikes because of this. (We often removed the rear hook as this would be the one that damaged the fish the most - hooks in the eye, that sort of thing.)
    8. We tried barbless hooks and gave it up after a week. We found we lost at least 50% more.
    9. And lastly, light line with no leader worked best for us. Not saying it's the best, but that was what worked best for us way back in the dark ages. 6lb mono we found to be perfect (no braid back then), 8lb was overkill, 4lb, was ok but resulted in a few lost fish, 1kg resulted in too many break offs so we gave that away. JP's don't have much fight compared to a lot of fish (I thought my first bass was a murray cod!) and we would rarely (if ever) lose a fish due to them running for cover. The only time we really got into trouble is if we hooked a freshwater mangrove jack. Now that was full on!
Like I said, this is just what worked for us. No doubt there are many other anglers with more experience than me who can give you advice that is more in tune with current fishing tech, and probably have more time fishing for JP than I did. Nevertheless, I hope some of this advice can help.
    Happy fishing!

Spot on mate. Sorry but RUclips has this marked as spam and I only just figured out how to fix the problem. All your information is correct. They biggest tip from me is stealth. Don’t get in the water and sneak up super slow and quite.
