People all over the world use the internet everyday, with our speeds varying based on where we’re connecting from. But which country has the fastest internet speeds? That’s what we’re going to answer in this video.

We’re going to look at the top 3 countries for internet speed based on the median speed in the country as reported by speedtest.net in march 2024. The service measures the throughput and latency (connection delay) of an Internet connection against one of over 16,000 geographically dispersed servers to calculate the connection speed.
The country with the 3rd fastest internet speeds is Chile with a median speed of 265 Mbps. These impressive speeds are due in part to The National Fiber Optic Plan which was announced by Chilean government in 2019. The plan has involved significant public investment and subsidies, which are meant to encourage private companies to invest in building networks in rural and remote areas. The government provides financial support for the initial infrastructure costs, making it more feasible for telecom providers to operate in low-demand areas. Chile is also helped by unique geography. Since the country is long but narrow, developing a linear infrastructure for fibre optic cables is more straightforward than in countries with large, sprawling landmasses. The fibre optic cables can be laid along the central spine of the country, often parallel to major roads, connecting major cities, towns, and remote areas with relatively fewer branches. The narrow width of Chile means that most of the population is close to the central communication routes. As a result, even people in rural areas are often not far from the fibre optic backbone, reducing the need for extensive local infrastructure. This has enabled the fibreoptic rollout to be far quicker in Chile than most other countries.
The country with second fastest internet speeds is the united arab emirates with a median speed of 276 Mbps. These high speeds again come down to geography and government investment as a large portion of its fairly small population of 9 million live in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The immense wealth of the uae government allowed them to get in early on their fibre optic rollout and in 2011 Abu Dhabi became the world’s first capital city to be fully covered by a fibre optic network.
The country with the fastest median internet speeds Singapore with a speed of 284 Mbps. Singapore is a compact city-state, which makes it easier and more cost-effective to deploy high-speed internet infrastructure compared to larger, more geographically spread-out countries. The dense population and limited land area mean that internet service providers can cover a vast percentage of the population with fewer resources than would be required in a larger nation. A government-led project known as Next Generation Nationwide Broadband Network begun in 2009. The goal was to provide Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) services to 95% of households and businesses by 2012, offering speeds of up to 1 Gbps and beyond. By 2013, Singapore had already achieved near-universal fiber optic coverage and as of 2024 has highest fibre optic coverage of any country in the world.
As we can see from the top 3 countries we’ve looked at, government funding and geography play a huge role in a country’s internet speeds. How do your internet speeds compare to the ones we’ve looked at? Ill leave a link to the speed testing service that provided the data for this video in the description if you’d like to compare.
