I have had STARLINK for over a year now as we live in the country here in New Zealand and getting cable laid to our property would be very expensive, one issue we did have is our Security cameras need an ethernet plug to run off the STARLINK system but we found we could buy for $30 a replacement cable with the ethernet socket and now we are all go. It cost $330 to buy initially and the monthly charge is $160 (Kiwi) but we are extremely happy with this system.

Only get 26-27 Mbps, but its sitting on the ground outside facing a wall and pointing west 😂 I need a longer replacement cable, to mount on the roof. Just using ex sky dish holder, so saved on that and $50 on a mount adapter
I live in ireland .... landines are no good , newly built housing estates get fiber connections. Old estates are left in the cold ..... Starlink is the best thing since sliced bread ... love it

I have a starlink in no=where Missouri and it is awesome. I had internet before, it was a verizon mifi however it was very slow on weekends and evenings. Starlink is blazing fast anytime i have logged on. I am watching HD video anytime i want while gaming on a xbox.
I just got set up in Port Vila, Vanuatu (South Pacific). It is the best solution for us. We moved from a contract with a local company promising 10Mbs (and rarely delivering) to 270Ms (just now), for about the same monthly price.
We have used our starlink in over 100 locations accross the us and canada for 2.5 years and usually only get 20-40MBPS. We move every 7 days or so, and Some areas with trees make it hard to connect. Larry
In Mexico I get 50 to 280 Mbps downstream. We had celular internet before with a ubiquity high gain antennae which was only 12 mbps max. It is way faster than what we previously had
I have it in the city and it is actually more reliable than cable or fiber. I can have cheaper faster internet from the local providers. But I choose the reliability of the connection. Stays connected during storms etc. Love it. Just need it to be a little faster. Maybe around 500 MBPS and I will be happier.
@IDKndIDK i use it in a city that is at max capacity, i get 40-300mbps depending on time of day, it does cut off less and is more consistent in streaming than my last two cable ISPs.
@ same. That’s why we got it. Xfinity is terrible in this area and we live on the coast with a lot of hurricanes. This didn’t cut out once during last hurricane.
@ I forgot to mention that we have about 27 devices in the house that are hooked to Starlink. They are made up of ring cameras and iPads and cell phones and Apple TVs. And it has all of them just fine. Our house is 4000 square foot and two story. The single Starlink WiFi 6 router handles it all.
For anyone wanting outside access to their home network, keep in mind that Starlink uses Carrier-grade NAT. There are ways around that but if you, for example, wanted to run a Plex video server, it won't work out of the box.
Have StarLink in northern WI where cell and internet (cable) is poor - terrible at best. At home I have Spectrum, LOL, typically StarLink provides BETTER down load and up load speeds than Spectrum! Love StarLink!
Off grid cabin in NM, powered by Anker. Closest re-sup 'town' is over an hour away when there's no snow. Nuther words, Boonies. Been using Starlink for a few months now. Really is plug-n-play. Don't mind the cost as there is only one other option around here and it's sketchy at best. We set the Starlink apparatus on a timer, which switches on every couple of hours so we can receive phone messages, texts and e'mails and then reply. Our workaround, since the solar generator is limited (at this time) to 4100 watt-hrs.
We live in rural North East Ontario Canada. Our internet service was dismal at best. Starlink is the best option we could get and it hasn't let us down in 2 years.
I'm so glad i've held off on this. Like PCMag said, it's only going to improve. It's improving relatively fast too. I'm just waiting until it's full gamer worthy and as affordable as fiber. It's definitely going to happen and I predict, at the longest, 10 to 15 years. This will make life cheaper for those who want to live cheaper.... homesteading, tiny homes, full off-grid even. I'll have the ability to live quite far from any town or city and still have gaming worthy internet.
Hi I’m a StarLink technician. The StarLink satellite and the cable connected to it have a thermal element inside. So in the case of snow, the satellite and the connected cable will heat up and literally melt any snow or ice on it. The biggest thing Ive seen that affects speed are nearby trees that intrude on the connection to the sky satellites

I am from Canada and I have the “Roam” plan that I use in Mexico all winter. I’m not aware of any requirement to return to my home country every couple months
I had cable. I got tired of the cable service going off non-stop. Sometimes, for a full day or more. Decades ago, I had Direct and Dish. Last year I had enough with Cable. I bought a Gen 2 Starlink. I only watch RUclips, game, and the internet. I will be with Starlink forever or something happens. Run out of money or the company goes under. Starlink is the best service I have ever been with. As of now. I don't need to upgrade to the newest dish. Gen 2 works perfectly for all of my personal needs.
I have the Ver 2 hardware. I live in a rural area with no wired internet options, so I was glad when Space X started providing service here. As for speeds, if I run a speed test using the Starlink app, I’ll get speeds between 65 Mbps and 150 Mbps download. But if I use a third party speed test, the results I get are about 1/3 of that, so download speeds between 25 and 60 Mbps. It’s better than nothing, but the claimed performance Starlink advertises is grossly overstated.
@ Well since the ground station is on my house, the only cabling involved is from the receiver to the wi-fi router, which is all 100% Starlink. So my comment stands.

Considering cross country Amtrak trips in retirement I started following related FB groups. A frequent question to the group is “Hows the WiFi on the trains?” I’ve travelled the remote west and know those cell coverage maps are a joke. Maybe people assume there is a magic fiber optic third rail for train internet? Can you comment on what it might take to put Starlink on a train and distribute it to potentially 100+ users?
They have starlink in airplanes so I’m sure it’s not an issue for a train. Just need to get them to sign up for the service and start mounting then on the trains.
A very expensive if cheap fiber/LTE/5G exist. But, US pricing at $120 is actually not the norm. In many countries, it's priced at around $40 in many parts of Europe and Asia and could go as low as around $23 in Africa.
Chester has both Verizon and T-Mobile home internet which are 1/2;to 1/3 the cost of Slink. They are also very fast and, because they are getting signal from towers that are just a few miles away, will have better latency.
T-Mobile has a contract with them for DTC, this month (Dec 24) they start text, then sometime in 2025 they are going to start with calls, and it should work anywhere.
I went fishing to a fly in camp in northern Canada and they had a new star link. I didn't push it but I was able to call home when the power, generator, was running. we had internet access. the connection was great. It sure beat the expensive sat. phone, and before that nothing. I highly recommend a star link if nothing else is available. The only draw back was guys on their phone all the time around camp. It kind of defeats the fly in part of the trip to get away, but..........

Sheesh. Everytime I look at the plan options they have added/swapped them around. Seven right now. Not familiar with them all, but betwen Residential and Roaming... If you want to bring Starlink with you for the travels, then a Roam plan would be your best bet. Extra $45 a month but you can literally go almost anywhere (looks like no 'middle of the ocean') and get service. If you just want Starlink moving between your two homes, you can try Residential and updating your service address each time you move. Can be a bit risky as you might get hosed if the other location hits its subscriber max. You move back and you would not be able to change your address back to the over subscribed one.
The same way Burlington Northern dropped the ball. Bn thought it was in the Train business, When they were in the transportation business. There should be BN cars ,busses airplanes and ships.
If I could just pay for the dish and forgoe the router(most likely inferior to mine) I would get this in a heartbeat. The speed and price is identical to what I have with Xfinity. Would be nice to have when I can finally afford my own home and not have to hassle with cable hookups.

Depends on your view of the sky. I have trees surrounding my home and was still able to find a good spot with minimal obstruction. The dish is mounted further away than the provided Ethernet cable though, a standard cat 6 cable works fine.
I had poor WiFi signal, live in a travel trailer N E Wa., I was in a field last year with no obstructions and it still said poor WiFi signal and to move closer to the router, I'm literally 8 feet. Can't seem to figure it out, ugg Gen 3 as well
Handles clouds, rains, storms just fine. Been using it in the delightfully rainy and overcast Pacific Northwest of the US for 2.5 years now. Not much compared to places with real winters, but had a 12 inch snow storm last winter. Never lost signal.
With the right plan, yes. Quite a few cruise and cargo vessels are using it now. The laser interlinks between satellites bounces your traffic between themselves until they get to one in range of an optimal earth surface uplink/downlink station.
Unfortunately there's no RJ45 to connect a router on the version I looked at so I dumped the idea. No ethernet jack then can't use it, some of my equipment needs ethernet and is not nor do I want to convert it to wifi. Seems short sighted to me to exlcude a key component to most networks. Wired is more secure plus I prefer faster speeds than 20-40mps, oh BTW I'm retired certified computer tech
We’ll see how well Starlink works as the garbage patch surrounding the entirety of close and medium orbit around our planet worsens…not to mention they don’t stay in low orbit forever and pollute the atmosphere when they recenter and burn up.
Unfortunately, Starlink is the best option for me, I live in the mountains, I wont' give it high praises, It's mediocre at best, and is better than the other provider. The up front cost and monthly in my opinion is not worth it if you other options. FYI, you need to have a clear view, at least 250 ft radius or it won't work right.

My Starlink system failed in the first year and I had to replace the cable on the roof. Not easy and expensive. Now it’s on the ground because I don’t trust it.
@@JD-oc3jx Sure am seeing an awful lot of quality ground based astronomy images in the last year. Between coatings, physical redesigns and changing orientation when they are close to the terminator they aren't having much effect once in their operational orbits.

I've had Starlink for about 6 months and love it. Fast enough for me. I've never saturated it.

The Starlink app tests speeds to its ground stations. Beyond that it’s up to partner carriers who run and manage the cables

A very expensive alternative to home broadband band or cellular, but if it's your only option I guess you don't have much choice other than to pay it.

Your speeds are faster than what I get from Century link but I pay 45 a month mine is 100 and 10 and is usually 85-95 and 8-9

ATT quietly sold Direct TV and now you can stream it for free.

If I could just pay for the dish and forgoe the router(most likely inferior to mine) I would get this in a heartbeat. The speed and price is identical to what I have with Xfinity. Would be nice to have when I can finally afford my own home and not have to hassle with cable hookups.

The router that comes with the dish is good quality, you can still use your other router with it. I have 2 third party routers in my starlink network.

Depends on your view of the sky. I have trees surrounding my home and was still able to find a good spot with minimal obstruction. The dish is mounted further away than the provided Ethernet cable though, a standard cat 6 cable works fine.

I had poor WiFi signal, live in a travel trailer N E Wa., I was in a field last year with no obstructions and it still said poor WiFi signal and to move closer to the router, I'm literally 8 feet. Can't seem to figure it out, ugg Gen 3 as well

Handles clouds, rains, storms just fine. Been using it in the delightfully rainy and overcast Pacific Northwest of the US for 2.5 years now.
Not much compared to places with real winters, but had a 12 inch snow storm last winter. Never lost signal.

With the right plan, yes. Quite a few cruise and cargo vessels are using it now. The laser interlinks between satellites bounces your traffic between themselves until they get to one in range of an optimal earth surface uplink/downlink station.

Unfortunately there's no RJ45 to connect a router on the version I looked at so I dumped the idea. No ethernet jack then can't use it, some of my equipment needs ethernet and is not nor do I want to convert it to wifi. Seems short sighted to me to exlcude a key component to most networks. Wired is more secure plus I prefer faster speeds than 20-40mps, oh BTW I'm retired certified computer tech
The Gen 1 and Gen 3 (gen 3 is current) routers do have RJ45s. For Gen 2 (the one I have) they sell a $17 widget to add a port.

We’ll see how well Starlink works as the garbage patch surrounding the entirety of close and medium orbit around our planet worsens…not to mention they don’t stay in low orbit forever and pollute the atmosphere when they recenter and burn up.

It does. You just need to change to the business plan and choose the public IP option in the settings. Instead of CGNAT.
Many isps don’t these days, unless you’re on a biz plan.
Unfortunately, Starlink is the best option for me, I live in the mountains, I wont' give it high praises, It's mediocre at best, and is better than the other provider. The up front cost and monthly in my opinion is not worth it if you other options. FYI, you need to have a clear view, at least 250 ft radius or it won't work right.

Between coatings, physical redesigns and changing orientation when they are close to the terminator they aren't having much effect once in their operational orbits.
