Yes it's probably better at piercing armor than the cartridges it was meant to replace. A simpler design ammo could be made. And use cheaper materials for ball ammo. Tungsten tip ammo for armor.
kinda parallels SPIW program (aka the ongoing "future rifle" thing) in the US, if i recall in the US aim was to increase hit probabilty & high mag capacity (60 rounds or so). was aimed at replacing the M14 before AR15 even was considered (at the time SPIW was in development AR15 was a intermediate solution). hyperburst, flechette & multi-plex rounds, integrated, multi-shot underbarrel grenade launchers, all that weird stuff. recommend watching the gun jeebus (how i jokingly call "forgotten weapons") he has entire series of vids covering basically all the guns since SPIW till the XM8 (i honestly kinda wanna have him a look at the SCAR program of the late 2000s, XM8 with pic-rail and all that stuff, because i can barely find any info on that)
In most small arms ammunition, sub-caliber ammunition often work well in large caliber ammunition (like 12.7 or 14.5mm) as they enough power and size to make it work well... But when tried to put into infantry cartridges (like 7.62mm or small calibers like 5.56mm), they either failed at wounding capabilities or the cost amount per bullet...
I think it would make more sense to extend this idea to higher calibers in order to increase the kinetic energy and damage of the projectile. I’d imagine a heavy MG with this cartridge would be capable of disabling IFV’s and APC’s, but also decreasing the effectiveness of body armor and cover on the battlefield (buildings, walls, etc.)
Sabot Flechetes are very underrated, they allow you to shoot a small projectile out of a big barrel making it possible to burn a lot more powder in a very short barrel compared to having a barrel as small as the projectile itself wich has to be a lot longer.
They found a better solution than flechette rounds any way, the AK-74. It has more range and accuracy than an AKM, less recoil, and the ammo is cheaper to produce and more conventional
@@ahmadsuleman9045 The recoil would've been about the same and the flechettes would've had longer effective range not to mention much better armor penetration.
@@2PotatesAn important factor in the adoption of the AK 74 and the 5.45x39 cartridge over AO 27 was cost. The more conventional ammo was cheaper, and the AK 74 has a good degree of parts commonality with the AKM, as opposed to the AO 27 which would require a lot more investment. The Soviet Union often looked for the most economic option when adopting weapons, not necessarily the best.

Cruelty Squad ass gun
So now ak can schoot apfsds rounds. Nice
It's always about the money...
Imagine all the stuff we could have had if they weren't constantly investing in ICBMs
Well I don’t think it was just cost a similar US program around the same time had similar results of very pitiful stopping power i believe
Nice design of AK.
Thunder Run from Battlefield 3 in background is extremely satisfying
It’s fin stabilising that means there are always a couple of crazy people running with it yelling “hyva you can do it”

It could've been better than the AK?!
