- Many of you have wanted to see a project centered around a Wardian Case. I didn't want to buy one, but I came up with the idea to turn an old aquarium into one. I think it's a pretty cool way to bring new life to something that would otherwise go unused. It's easy to do as well.
I have some pretty cool ideas for the setup itself, but that's for another time! Let me know what you thought of the project down in the comments as well.

Yo what's up SerpaSquad! Back this week with an aquarium conversion. Many of you have wanted to see a Wardian Case project and I thought this would be a cool way to do it. Let me know what you think!
I am so glad you did this vid
Could you do a collab with me bro
Can't wait to see what the "specific purpose" is that you alluded to!
You make it look SO easy lol. I have been building a custom built vivarium from scratch. The worst part was cutting acrylic sheet to size for the sliding doors. wasted half before I managed to get usable pieces! (next time I will cheat and order ready cut custom sized pieces)
Please make an update video on all of your tanks. Like that River stream one
Awesome 👏
So that's what it is!
I acquired one from a salvage operation after a neighbor died. She had some neat things and I always think of her when I use her things.
💛
Mine hinges at the border between the box and the peaked roofline. I like this better as it doesn't disrupt the visibility and gives more space to get in and out. I like the addition of a handle, so I'll be doing that.
Awesome!
When you make something it's a SerpaDesign
When I make something it's a DerpaDesign
😂🍻
Thanks for starting off by telling me what the hell a Wardian case is.
Agree, please explain.
I think he may mean "Edwardian".
Yes
The Wardian case was an early type of terrarium, a sealed protective container for plants. It found great use in the 19th century in protecting foreign plants imported to Europe from overseas, the great majority of which had previously died from exposure during long sea journeys, frustrating the many scientific and amateur botanists of the time. The Wardian case was the direct forerunner of the modern terrarium and vivarium and the inspiration for the glass aquarium. It is named after Dr. Nathaniel Bagshaw Ward (1791-1868) of London who promoted the case after experiments.
@@cyrillian13 He literally said that in the video
This is really cool! I'd like to see more custom builds like this.
I cannot wait to see what ends up in here- why the two halves? We'll soon find out I guess!
I would guess mantids if he does stock it with animals
@@pocketpj2722 if it’s a 20 gallon that’s divided into two with a little bit at the top, let’s assume it’s 10.5 gallons. It’s also designed to hold in humidity, so that also limits the choices. Mr. Serpa could put mourning geckos, small geckos, Small tree frogs, or any other small animal. But what if he did a land/water thing? One side is a tropical terrarium and the other side is an aquarium biotope?
@@Shadowood_Jedi_Temple I could see small tree frogs but I feel like it's way too small and arboreal for really anything. It could just be for plants but idk why he would divide it if it was just for plants... hmmmm
Herbs 🪴😁
So... In the end what went in there???
This is called reimaging/recycling. This is AWESOME! You have done it again. Great Job!
I’d love to see an updated version of this. I think Tanner would approach it a lot differently now.
No words can properly describe this work of art. And that’s without PLANTS! Such an amazing idea, with relatively simple tools. Are you planning on putting animals in it? Maybe mourning geckos? Maybe two different creatures (one on each side)?
Am I the only one who sees a tarantula enclosure? Great work man!😍
I am so intrigued!
You and I are both "on" at the same time on Saturdays.
You, uploading a new SD video, when I am teaching live classes on Zoom. At least I get to relax with your videos at the end of the day! Can't wait to see the conclusion, next week.
I have several Wardian cases and I’m really looking forward to being inspired by the plantscape you create for yours!
That would be a cool Paludarium as well
Closest thing ive found to what im looking for. I want to make an aquarium into a kitchen window green house for herbs year round
This is the best channel on RUclips
Omg you should put mantises in these!😜
I was *just* thinking about what I could do with one of my old tanks!🤩
Thank you for all your fantastic ideas. I am hooked on terrariums now, l find it so rewarding.
I would love to see you make more of these!! I want to see what variations you can come up with
Absolutely stunning Tanner 😍
Wardian Case + Super cool mini greenhouse then? Ive always wanted one but i didnt know they had a special name!!
Absolutely beautiful up-cycle!
I love that the sky is the limit. You always surprise me with what you accomplish.
Everytime I say I grow my mini Orchids in a Wardian Case, people give me an odd look like, "what the hell is a Wardian Case?"
😅. Then I show them a pic of my orchidarium case. Bells Ring! 🥳
Nice job Tanner, looks really Nice. Now I can send them your vid and they can make their own with your guidance. 😘. Thanks Tanner..... Have a great one. 😎
Ah, another episode of “This old Serpa”.
I've been shopping for one of these. This looks much nicer than the ones I've seen. It's so cleanly done and professional. Can't wait to see you scape it!
Your videos really make my Saturdays Tanner!
Lovely dish garden
That looks mega fancy! Can't wait to see what you put inside!
Nice Edwardian case!
This is awesome, but might I suggest you maybe try making one again but with brass or copper trim? I know metal work and soldering isn’t really in your wheel house of skills (that I know of) but with your attention to detail I could see it coming off great and bring in a lot of views. Thanks for all of the entertaining content you put out
I've always loved the look of these!
Nice work Taner👍👍👍
Fantastic & looking forward to seeing what you put in it.
Looks really amazing!
Can't remember that video where I have written the name "GREENHOUSE ❤️"
which u used here...
Take love ❤️ for all-time my terra-teacher❤️
Hello great video build Tanner
I LOVE this, I am definitely making one, thank you for the inspiration!
Love how the Wardian case turned out!!!! Cant wait until you landscape it with a bunch of awesome plants!
I also lilke that, tecnically, one could grab the top, triangle-rectangle design and make a cool looking terrarium that way.
10/10, if I had the space I would actually make this one haha
Love it and can’t wait to see you plant it.
Love the design idea. Can't wait to see what you do with it!
A colony of mourning geckos or small frogs would look great in there! Good job!
Well done, it’s beautiful. I can’t wait to see what you plant inside...☘️🌿🌱🌾
I love a fancy wardian case. This is still quite low key compared to some that I've seen. This was a fun process to watch and honestly just so soothing.
GORGEOUS!!
This looks super cool!
Yet again. Another wonderful piece of work!
Hi ! It's been months since I'm watching your YT channel. I can admit your videos are so satisfying maybe because I would never do a labor as yours lmao. Please keep making me entertained and satisfied as always ^^ !
This is awesome!! I have a 20H that holds water but has a large questionable chip in the side so I wanted to turn it into a terrarium. This is brilliant and I’ll definitely use this for inspiration for it. Thank you! Nicely done
Awesome! You are so innovative, definitely one of my favorite creators
I suggest cutting a circle portion of tape for the middle of the knitted mesh to keep them neat after the silicone had cured then use the ball end of a traditional glass cutter to smooth your silicone beads to make it easy and aesthetically pleasing when tidying it up plus it's easier to remove the excess silicone.
Edit: Just a suggestion no hate, love the work and content
This is one cool tank can't wait to see what you put in it
You are a beast at what you do, keep it up bruh.
Beautiful ❤ I'll use this as inspiration to do something similar for my plants ♡
I love it! Can't wait to see what you do next with it.
Love the Victorian aesthetic. Can't wait to see it filled!
Super impressive as always Tanner, can't wait to see what you plan on using it for!
Can't wait to see what you do with this!
Have you ever considered getting a stick insect? This would be a lovely home for two of them!
Love love love love love!
Very cool!
This is so lovely! You always make these projects seem so easy ahaha! I can't wait to see what you will fill this with.
Great job Tanner! This seems really cool and informative
Thats awesome!
so neat!
love it!
i love your builds and videos
Now let's see a full size one designed by you!
Amazing !
Awesome build!
Love the vid as I really wanted to do this! Have a great day
It looks like it could make a great mourning gecko habitat.
This is cool..got some spare aquariums laying around I might try this with.
Tanner, why don't we ever see you using a dremel? Cutting through that aquarium frame with a cut off wheel would be much faster, easier, and safer than a utility knife. Everything else, 👍.
I really really enjoy Your Channel.
I have a 4 Fire Belly Toads and Fish. Had a couple Of Fire Belly Newts That I just Loved But sadly one Passed in a move and Godzilla I think passed of Old Age. Miss them both a lot. And Now really hard to find Replacements.
Anyways.. I have learned SO MUCH from YOU.... THANK YOU...
Who else is going to be spending the next week wondering just what Tanner has planned for this?
Ooh where'd ya get them
I bought a glass and steel lantern with a hinged door last summer, that had a design in the glass like those old green houses. I plan to turn it in to some kind of enclosed plant set up but I just can not figure out what would fit in there nicely. I keep going back to your videos for ideas. XD
Love it
Tanner, always taking it to the next level. You continue to be an inspiration for my daughter and I on our channel. I’d love your feedback on our scapes! You’re the best!
This was such a cool project! Fun fact, the Wardian case is one of the only reason we have Nepenthes pitcher plants in cultivation, along with many other tropical plants. Excited to see what you do with it!
0:17 I wonder if he drew those. I wouldn't be surprised
Very nice
I like that handle choice. This is amazing content.
awesome build and verry original good job !!!
I like the look of it
Honestly, I think you should do some sponsorships, these will increase your budget so you can make some very special things, and also since you quit your job, it will provide much more income than just ad revenue. Also you could maybe make some terrariums or custom aquariums to sell, this would be very enjoyable content while providing you with some extra budget. I don't see you wanting to become rich of this, but I do see how many aquariums you have (and how much they must cost to maintain), and since youtube has become your job I don't think anyone would complain if you would do a sponsorship deal. I don't know if you'll see this but I really enjoy your content and I really hope you're doing well! Really looking forward to the planting of this one!.
Very cool ,I need a man with ur skills tfs
This is awesome as they look amazing but as u say are all very expensive display pieces! I like most hobbiests have several spare glass aquas kicking around!
Aquarium looks great can’t wait to see the finished project you should make it jungle theme with vines and moss.
It’s absolutely gorgeous, your workmanship is unbelievable always on point 👍🏻 Love your creations 🪴🪲💚🦎🐢🐠
God Tier Content per usual Tanner, thank you for continuing to do what you do. I'm rewatching your whole channel for umteenth time and noticed you still dont have a patreon... BRUHHH!!!
My plants n bugs are eatin good bc of you, i wanna know my bhoi is eatin good too, get that goin so I can throw you some funds!
You’re amazing
I love your videos so I decided to make a bottle terrarium with a 6 gallon carboy, It all died! So I put it outside on my balcony(Toronto facing south) and noticed some moss last week I cleaned off the dirt on the outside of it and found one of the ferns I planted is growing again and doing really great! What can I do to make it thrive should I add those little bugs you add to your bottles and terrariums, it's not covered at the top, thanks and keep the great videos coming!
PLEASE make a build with this! I've been watching you for a while and my gf got me a case just like this! I've I've struggling a little trying to figure out what to do with it! It's going to be my first build!
This feels half done! I need to see part 2!
Cool
😲😲😲😲 I love it bro
I think it would be awesome if you grew some sort of varigated monster in your new build!
Thank you you gave me a great idea for my old 65g tank i almost threw out much appreciated
I would've used wood trim, but don't get me wrong it looks great.
Yeah I think the wood trim would look better
i am going to try to make one tomorrow
