  • That neatly leads us back to the Abarth 595 Competizione, a hot version of Fiat’s 500.

Abarth 595: Is it Worth Fiat’s Glamour Reputation? 1: gaycarboys.com/abath-595-is-i...
The Fiat 500 was a rebirthed version of the 50’s 500 Bambino, which itself had the Abarth 595 makeover.
Today’s Abarth is a fairly inexpensive hot hatch, but in the days of 200kw 4-pots, 132kw seems a trifle mild. It has a 5-speed manual, or the appalling 5-speed robotised manual automatic gearbox. The latter is an abomination and should immediately lemming-dive off the nearest cliff.
What we noticed was that the 32grand city car was as cute as a button, and looked far faster than it actually was. It was full of joy and exuberance. It exuded fun, but is bare bones. There are no driver aids, not even the much-loved cruise control. That was a drag on the open road, but the lack of a reversing camera was a saving too far.
Nonetheless, Abarth 595 Competizione is a sports car in every sense of the word.
We have a full review to come, but rest assured, the Abarth 595 was a thing to behold.
It had the right sound track, the look of a gym-fit twink, and all the quirky Italian heritage we love. It was a mixed bag, so look out for the Video review this week.

Ive had my Competizione for 4 months now, it's an absolute riot to drive and one of the best sounding hot hatches you'll ever hear !

      which colour did you get?

Abarth Red, not my 1st choice but they're so hard to get here in Scotland.I wanted one with the mechanical LSD ideally as well but this car handles well without it to be fair.

a bunch of fun. AHHHH scotland, that explains loving a manual. i wish it was the same here, but alas....

Another great review. Have read overseas reviews at either end of the spectrum, love it or hate it yet it would seem to be a car that would be hard not to like if not own.
It sure does bring a smile to one’s face 😁

love or hate depends on expectation. If you'd driven an i20 first, there'd be no competition. the i20n has oodles of gear. If I have one complaint, the 500 feels a little old. As i said, big guys on board are going to feel a little self conscious at first;)

The car reminds me of the old Mishubitsy "not so squeezie" add. I like the knob on the gear shifter too! Thanks for another quality review.

Nice real-world review, as a bigger but short guy, i wanted to see how a larger person would look in those seats, u both looked ok & didnt look silly in such a small car, helps my decision on one in the future 😮

Quite right. there is a surprising amount of space, just like there was in the original car.

I sourced one of these for a mate’s wife last year. She loves it! I have to say it is one of the most fun cars you can ever drive...

Happy little commuter car, and one for a burn in the hills on a Sunday morning. A mate of mine has one and it's always a great talking point. Abarth is pronounced Abart apparently, according to the cognoscenti. Cheers.

yes so they tell me! I assume your mate has the manual. I can't think why anyone would to the auto.

A mate has a low mileage Fiat 500. Comfy, small and easy to drive. Great small city car, albeit for one or two people. Revs too high so makes me wonder about engine durability. I lived in the UK for a period of time and back then Fiats had a toxic reputation. Nice in the garage, but not for me. Great review, and correct to say the car makes people smile. Citroen 2CV does the same, perhaps even more so.

That would have insane power to weight that would rival hot hatch acceleration

you'd think, but 6.9 0-100 is a little below expectation. still HEAPS of fun though
