There is something I've always wondered about. Typically movies, games and any other type of media that is considered good usualy have only the base elements needed to tell their story (usualy). Script writers are praised for "trimming the fat" as you call it. But what if a film or other form of media wants to portray a life as accurately as possible? There are plenty of unneeded things that occur yet we wish to avoid them and ignore them in film. While I have no issue with this it makes me wonder why we as pepole are so adamant about storytelling efficiency.
ABSOLUTELY. Honestly, it isn't a minor detail for me. It tells us the class of the characters, whether they're working class, middle class, elite etc. I find that characters re-wearing clothes in movies/shows isn't done nearly enough. For some reason, characters seem to have a bottomless wardrobe and don't know that washing machines exist. It annoys me so much, especially when the characters are young adults/teens. YA/teens are broke and they sure as hell can't afford to have a fresh fit every single day lol. I love that they recycled outfits, it really grounds the story and the characters.
I read once that Lucille Ball insisted on re-wearing outfits in I Love Lucy because it was unrealistic to the viewers if she had a different dress in every episode.
Lady Bird, Mean Girls, Clueless, The Breakfast Club, Love Simon, Napoleon Dynamite, Booksmart, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Almost Famous, Heathers, 16 Candles, Ferris Beuller's day off, Juno, Freaky Friday...would you like me to continue?
@@bubbles4897 maybe there weren't any teenage actor's available, most of the time teenage characters are played by adults because the roles might not be appropriate
That Being Said oh i didn’t know that! but i looked it up and she was like 19 when she filmed it maybe even 18 which is really close u know? and she really does look like 17 i'll give them that
@@glowrillaz yeah, although legally she was an adult she was still a teen playing a teen, I don't really see why it's a big deal tho, she played the character really well so does it really matter?
Well, Netflix doesn't want to spend a lot of money, which is why the writing is so bad. Probably they sent in a first draft and netflix said, "alright, we're doing this" without anyone ever actually reading it.
This is no Kissing Booth. The Edge of Seventeen was a pretty good teen movie. Did you know Hailee Steinfeld was nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance here?
Nice to see some positivity around these here parts! Good teen movies exist! I'd love to see you cover Mean Girls one of these days. That film is a classic that proves genre sceptics absolutely wrong.
Yes, we need some more positivity, especially for a channel literally named "Cynical Reviews!" I hope that he covers some of the classic John Hughes teen flicks at some point! 😊💕
In my opinion, Lady Bird and the classic Good Will Hunting are my favorite youth/ coming-of-age movies. Mean Girls also is the best satrical film either depicting shallow cliques or circles in youth, or how Hollywood sees teenagers in their movies.
I know, I internally cheered the first time I watched it, as Nadine is condemned by the other characters and the film itself for her terrible choices, and she ACTUALLY apologises, changes and grows as a person throughout her journey! ♥️💕🙏
LEARN2DRAW characters who do terrible things can potentially be good, like Nadine in this case It only becomes a problem when the movie doesn’t acknowledge their character’s actions as they are: shitty and flawed Like did Kissing Booth 2 really thought any normal viewer would side with Elle after she compared her troubles to that of a gay man’s and cheated on Noah on public television?
"she possesses more talent in a single one of her eyebrows than the entire cast of these movies combined" weeeee OF COURSE! it's hailee steinfeld we're talking about. jeez tnx 4 the likes
To be honest I was also pissed with the fact that her best friend hooked up with her brother. I felt the betrayal, but yeah Nadine could have handled the situation a bit better.
Could you give me your point of view and reasoning? I never understood why is it a big deal when a best friend gets romantically involved with their bestie's brother/sister. They have a right to do so, to live their life and to love who they want. One doesn't own their relatives. At least that's how I see it but I'm curious of your standpoint.
@@lyria7520 okay so I might be completely selfish and immature here but I completely understand Nadine and her reaction the whole thing cuz like, she was her ONLY friend, the only person she actually had a good time with, and she was vulnerable with her. And she slept with her brother, (who I personally hate throughout the movie), who she detests, not just as the way u usually don't get along with siblings but she really loathes him for he was favoured by their only parent and got everything he wanted in his life and had now gotten the only person Nadine had to herself. If I were in Nadine's place, I don't think I would ever be able to forgive either of them but yeah, I might be pretty immature as I say this lmao
@@lyria7520 cause you see when you have a friend you feel like a bubble surrounding you both, surrounding this relationship, you say and act and look at this person in this bubble in kind of a different way you'll look at another person or another relashionship, be it love or simply with ur parents, when your friend get together with the brother, you'll feel you're bubble burst somehow or collided with another, she's not just a friend anymore, she's also your brother's girlfriend, something is bound to change even gradually, there will be things you won't be able to tell her, there will be times you'll not find her with you (in the movie this was shown perfectly), ofc it's not the friend fault to be with her boyfriend, but if we're talking about the other party feelings and thoughts, then i shall say it really make a difference , and you jusssst a little, lose that safe spot you had in your friend,... Everyone is free to do whatever ofc and making a big fuss or "rule" about this is a bit.. over, but you'll bound to love that guy, and if you do his sister_ your friend_ is bound to feel a little weird, hurt, call it whatever, it's gonna happen and it won't be your fault for just falling in love as you did nthn wrong, she'll have to suck it up🤷♀️.... As for me, I'll run away from all this situation and I'll prefer to have my sweet regular, normal friendship away from all this hassle 💁♀️
Lyria I was so angry because Nadine is a loner who only seemed to have a bond with her father and her best friend. To her everyone, except her best friend and dad, chose her brother and they did even when they were little. So when her dad died all she had left in her corner was her best friend and had growing resentment towards her brother and mother. So when her best friend, her only friend who knows how she feels towards her family chooses to hook up and then date her brother, it feels like a huge betrayal. It also doesn’t help that when Nadine is trying to be okay with the situation her friend immediately jumps ship to be with her brother and his group of friends who never try to welcome Nadine.
@@lyria7520 I hate my sister on a visceral level. She is everything I hate rolled up into one person. If my best friend decided to date her, we'd be done. That's it. Over. We date people we like, people we can connect with, and people we would want to associate with. Well, I wouldn't want to be near anyone my sister likes, as I disagree with every aspect of her being. You cannot be my best friend and date my sibling. It's the same point of view. It's the greatest betrayal imaginable at that age especially.
My girlfriend has borderline personality disorder and when she watched this movie she felt identified with Nadine. All the things Nadine does and how she felt about it shows the struggles of a person with BPD. Even when Nadine said she see herself like out of her body shock me because my gf told me she felt the same in her worst crisis. So yeah, it's a good movie and also shows perfectly a character with BPD.
There's a difference between an adult identifying with Nadine (admittedly I do, a little bit), and a teenager. Or many teenagers have BPD, because I recall many getting involved in drama like this, to a greater or lesser degree, at my school.
Yes, but also there's a difference between the situations you may get involved and the personality to deal those situations. A lot of people would deal with all the drama Nadine has, but sometimes she would make the things worse for nothing and probably a few of us would understand why. Probably I am wrong because there's not a fact that Nadine was written as a BPD character, but my gf and me saw that the people with BPD has so much in common with Nadine. I repeat, don't take my comment as a fact. Enjoy a good movie that finally has a good teenage character. Love y'all
As someone also diagnosed with BPD, remember that it’s a very broad spectrum disorder, with a diverse range of presentations. Psychiatrists are not supposed to diagnose teenagers with BPD because the crisis of identity that is a main component of BPD is normal for teenagers (because they are in a transitory period in their lives). Just be careful that you don’t misrepresent BPD as being akin to normal teenage development (as that undermines people who do have that diagnosis and will have to continue to manage it throughout their lives) and that you don’t misrepresent normal grieving/coping mechanisms as being abnormal and ‘disordered.’ This doesn’t invalidate your girlfriend’s experience in any way, just be mindful that she represents herself and not all people :) so this movie really spoke to her and explored issues or scenarios that she identified with and felt were connected to her BPD. It doesn’t mean the behaviour or feelings are exclusive to people with BPD. Usually when you diagnose someone with a disorder there has to be an absence of other explanations/contributing factors.
Flora Posteschild that’s why you’re not really meant to diagnose teenagers with BPD, the opening text from the DSM-5 (APA, 2013) says an individual must show “A pervasive pattern of instability of interpersonal relationships, self-image, and affects, and marked impulsivity, beginning in early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts”
I agree that Nadine was a flawed character, but in my opinion her friends and family really did treat her terribly without much acknowledgement of their own actions at the end
@@estersilva7804 what do you mean? The brother calls her dramatic for her telling him that he hasn't shown her any love, the mom obviously treats the brother like the golden child and says terrible things to her. When did they ever apologize to her?
@@itsisha9762 *scoff* he called her dramatic!? How dare he! I totally support her guilt tripping him over not being strong at one point! or her knowing how much of a pain her mother is and still not getting in the car! We all have mental health issues and if it was truly a competition, Nadine wouldn't feel like a special snowflake in the slightest.
But it’s true we’re only seeing it from Nadine’s perspective. People care about her more than she thinks, and her immediate response is to become incredibly defensive. This is understandable due to her past trauma and experiences but she’s not the most reliable protagonist either
I agree that Joey King wasn't good in the Kissing Booth, but she is great in The Act. She plays Gypsy Rose Blanchard, and actually shows her relationship with her mom deteriorating, rather than it being told to us.
Honestly, when people thought Nadine was just being an unreasonably plain, selfish brat for feeling betrayed by her friend when she was going out with her brother, it made me believe they were completely missing out the point of her feeling the way she did and how valid it was if someone was put into her shoes (although it may have been selfish and wasn’t anyone else’s fault). BUT I don’t think Krista was a good friend to her either because she would’ve dropped long years of friendship with Nadine just because she opposed which could’ve been an obviously predictable response, waiting to be made way before the two started dating. She was also the one who broke their code first, yet didn’t really make an effort to convince Nadine to accept their relationship and just move on, and letting her know that she wasn’t betraying her or didn’t mean to, at least. If somebody just easily broke the code between friends, I’d assume they are taking the friendship very lightly. Instead, she was the one who got mad. Like, come on. Even Elle did a better job at convincing Lee to support her relationship with Noah and didn’t immediately try to ditch their friendship. 😂 Speaking of which, it frustrated me that there was a lack of honest communication happening between Nadine and Krista, with Nadine telling her how she felt completely left out in the dust ever since Krista started dating her brother, and how she just easily ditched her at a party by hanging out with his friends, instead, while she was left alone. Overall, this video is such a great and simple interpretation in understanding the depths of the characters, especially the connections that are made with Nadine’s close relationship with her father, and how his death was relevant to the story as it worsened the dynamic of her relationship with her mom & brother (because the mom was more fond of him/so, the absence of her father left an even bigger void in her, believing that she had no one beside her anymore) - “The Kissing Booth” will probably feel that burn lmao
I really liked this movie, but I always felt like it really singled out Nadine to be the only bad guy. I feel like the things that upset Nadine are valid and legitimate for someone in her position, and I see her growing from her own immaturity, but I also see the ones around her not really taking any responsibility of their own. There’s a reason Nadine was upset with her friend, brother, mom, etc. It takes two to fight and only one side is made to reconcile 🤷🏻♀️
**SPOILERS:** I just wanna say that Krista already did choose between Nadine and her brother, and that Nadine wasn't all in the wrong. She ditched her friend -- Someone she's been around for years, and knows how bad her anxiety is. And for the rest of the movie, even tho she was closer to Nadine than her own brother, it's him who's chasing her down and worrying about her. Her supposedly best friend doesn't even try to reach out. I can 100% get behind Nadine having to apologize to her brother, she put him through hell with little to no reason, but Krista? Nah fuck her, that hoe ain't loyal. This is why the end for me felt a bit off when she agreed to reunite with her friend. I also think that her bro and her mum shoulda apologized to her as well, man especially the mom, she wasn't even trying and, (Like mother like daughter...) was a vitriolic bitch in that one scene before Nadine stole her keys and went off. It felt a bit one-sided even though the movie doesn't present the issue as black-and-white (In this case everything being Nadine's fault.).
Well being your friend and being your Personal caretaker is a huge difference and no friend has to always be there for someone in this way. It's okay if someone can't Deal with others mental state - It's not her duty to stay if she can't
@@allyshortcake3807 So why would she want to hang out with Nadine afterwards? I get what you're saying, but it makes absolutely no sense based on what the movie showed us. If she didn't want to be friends anymore and deal with Nadine's shit, Krista simply wouldn't have made the offer -- She was the one who initiated it, after her boyfriend did all the work. Plus I never made a case that she should be Nadine's caretaker. I made a case that she was a bad friend. I believe I proved my point.
@@TheNSJaws what I meant is that she was the one trying to manipulate the relationship and if a person can't cope with the way another person acts It's okay to distance yourself for a while. She tried to change so it probably felt like they can be friends again for her. My whole point Was that exactly she isn't her caretaker or should be - that's why she doesn't always have to stay with her. But if you think that she was the one acting wrong that's okay too. It's a movie where you can interpret everything different
@@allyshortcake3807 I get what you're saying, and I agree with the premise (She doesn't need to be Nadine's caretaker.), that being said, after acting like one for so long, and knowing what she was like, you don't just drop her off, no contact, and hope for the best -- Assuming Krista had best in mind for Nadine and didn't just drop and forget about her until the movie's plot thought to remind her. If you have others depending on you, and you've already let them depend on you, either nut up and continue as you are, or work with them so that they become more independent. Otherwise you look like a selfish asshole who was using other's weaknesses for your own self validation. Plus, it's funny that this is Nadine's bro who basically showcases how you need to be a rock for ppl in need even when you don't want to, but Krista couldn't or wouldn't learn this very important lesson from him. Even though she supposedly spends so much time with him, and he implies that he confides in her. Just seems like there was a lot of lost potential in the last 15 minutes of the movie.
Thank you! Nadine might've overreacted a tiny bit but that's what made this movie so great. Something that wouldn't matter in a few years seemed like just a big deal to her now. But fr I was so mad that her friend got excused for sleeping with her brother then blaming Nadine for ruining their friendship like... Girl no lmao
Something I noticed is that most of the time when he has something negative to say its a longer video. It could be that there is only so many ways you can explain how good something is without annoying people. While you can find many ways in which you can find something negative to say and something about that is inviting. Not that this was a bad video. It's just something I didn't think about till now.
It's mainly because I didn't want to go into detail dissecting the plot like I usually do, because I want people to watch it and I don't want to spoil it for them. And yes, you're right, there's only so many ways you can say "it's good" without getting repetitive.
Cynical Reviews Plus, a coherent story should be inherently easier to succinctly explain. An incoherent plot demands a correspondingly elongated elaboration.
Not gonna lie, I would be okay if no one talked about this movie. Cause MY GOD every conversation about this movie is about condoning everything Nadine does be it good or bad because of her nuance, and then condemning every breath Krista and Darien take because they have to be perfect to be sympathized with. this is an incredible movie surrounding by mind-numbing conversations, because this teen movie is too real for actual teenagers.
Ah, yes, this movie was so refreshing for me to see, especially with me myself being a teenager. The entirety of it is so small-scale, there are no forced conflicts or melodramatic moments as seen in a lot of other garbage teenage demographic films, it's a brilliantly paced, believeable, breath-of-fresh-air film that frankly, I would say is one of the best (top 10 ish?) **modern** teen films. It's no Breakfast Club or Ferris Bueller, but few things even are.
I think we need more good male coming of age comedies. I think we haven't had a good one in a while. And please stop making the main characters a simp like they do all the time.
A Little Romance (1978) is told from both of the protagonists points of view. Laurence Olivier co-stars and it's one of the few hidden gems he appeared in during his "pay me and I'll do it" phase of his career. Essentially two teens from unhappy homes grow fond of eachother and blackmail an elderly pickpocket into helping them run away to Venice because in the classic romance films they enjoy watching couples who are truly in love always end up there. Also this was directed by George Roy Hill a fact which by itself is quite amusing.
jojo rabbit is a great movie and technichaly a coming of age! but yeah, i think i agree. the last good full coming of age movies that i saw with a male lead were Sing Street and Moonlight from 2016
While your critical reviews are funny, this is something I would love to watch more of. This actually gives good recommendations and it's still funny, so if possible please give us more of this in the future.
Not even gonna lie I really felt for Nadine in this movie. It's one of my favourite movies and, call me selfish or a bitch, but the way Nadine reacted to her best friend and brother was so relatable to me. Something similar happened to me and I just havent forgiven them. It's like you just lost someone. There's someone in the world who loves you, they're yours, it's not romantic it's platonic and you're both on everything together. Suddenly, the kid that got everything in life takes them too. Not only do they take them but they break into this world you've both created and distorts it forever. It's never going to be the same and they both knew that going in. Lol overall: I love and understand Nadine for all her good and all her bad
I really recommend watching Booksmart, I only decided to watch it because of Billie Lourds character in it but damn I really ended up loving the movie as a whole and it kept my sluggish adhd brain interested through it all.
I was able to relate to Nadine so much. By the end, my face was soaked in tears. I started looking at my mistakes from then on, to be a good human. Such movies always have a positive impact on audience.
I related to her so much too For the first time, I felt like the problems in a movie are real. Its always easy to know what to do from the outside looking in, thats why watching movies is so boring (theres always a resolution that is really easy to see from the start). But with this one, I felt really confused as if it was my own life. I knew how she was feeling but i didnt know at the same time and i knew what she was doing was wrong but it felt right. Her problems felt authentic. And then she said that when she looks at herself she hates what she sees and I can understand that feeling so well. Nadine really felt like a person more than a character.
I find this movie believable. I mean Nadine lost her dad at pretty young age in this movie. 13...right when she was hitting puberty. In a time that is difficult all on it's own. and then you lose someone who was supportive of you and understood you. And yeah she's seventeen when the movie starts...but the death of a loved one isn't something you get over with quickly. It can take years to properly process this stuff. I'd know bc it's been three years and I still miss my late grandpa and feel lonely a lot. and I'm 29. and then her friend finds a life of her own, and they drift away...and her mom isn't exactly as supportive as her dad was. and her brother is liked by everyone and seen as cool and perfect. It can create unjust resentment. and well...it's perfectly natural to see like changing in friendships or fallouts with friends as WORST THING EVER. Especially when you're this young and it's like...happening for the first time in your life. When I was this age I reacted to this shit in a similar manner. I'd break down and cry like it was the end of the world.
I found this movie to be so enjoyable and relatable. As someone who has struggled with depression before, I found that the way they portrayed her “small” problems as being really big to nobody else but the protagonist to be HIGHLY relatable. 1000/ 10 WE NEED MORE MOVIES LIKE THIS!!!
Teen dramas are like Seinfeld episodes taken seriously. Jerry starts dating a woman who's taller than him. A lady falls for George, even though he's baaaaaad.
this movie extremely hard for me to sit through bc it LITERALLY gets every detail of the dynamic between me, my mom and my sister to a T. Like I was genuinely taken aback watching my family on screen in theaters and I've only ever watched it twice bc of the emotional toll it takes on me. Feels weird to say its the best teen movie ever made bc its literally my life but no movie hits close to home like Edge of 17
It’s heartwarming how since you’ve had a relationship, you’ve become the not-quite-as-cynical reviewer. Even my cold cold heart melted just a bit to see you in a happier mood. In all seriousness, I appreciate the occasional positive videos as much as your biting wit against the worst of the worst. You watched 2 kissing booth movies for us. You deserve some joy. Keep it up, my friend. ❤️
When I first watched this movie, I really did expect it to be just another shitty teen dramedy, but I actually loved it so much, I ended up watching the hell out of this movie. At least ten times in like a month or so. I just couldn't get enough. Even my mom sat down with me once and watched it, and she said she didn't expect to enjoy it at all, but ended up loving it as well! So it's not just a movie for teens!
OMYGHAD YES there is something so raw and simple about this that doesnt leave you cringing. bc it can happen to literally anybody. especially with women :( plus the acting was 👌
Honestly, I hope Hailee Steinfield takes a music hiatus (not a long one though) and act more films because I truly enjoy anything she is in asides from Pitch Perfect sequels :)
Andrea Bilbao ohh I’ve been seeing that a lot on RUclips. I just thought that was her character in the Pitch Perfect sequels so I didn’t even bother :)
dickinson is REALLY good. she is involved in production too as she composed and sang for an original song for dickinson. and shes stellar in this, can always rely on her for a good performance
They say that Cynical Review’s heart grew ten times the size that day but because the human anatomy isn’t designed to have a heart suddenly grow ten times the size his heart crashed with in his rib cage killing him instantly
I'm not into teen movies but I have watched this movie a day or two after watching this video and I gotta say it makes me feel comfy especially at the end because it never does stupid things.
You were 100% on the money with this review. It kind of frightens me how many people didn’t understand what this movie was trying to say. Nadine’s self centered “not like other girls” mentality is bad. The friend hasn’t committed any crimes and her brother is just a normal dude. But I’ve seen so many people glorify Nadine’s flaws instead of seeing them as human mistakes. I guess it’s a teenage movie. Watched by dumb teenagers. But still.
The movie actually makes you empathize with a main character who is on the wrong, and the story concludes with her actually losing and bettering herself for it.
I think one of the main reasons you empathize w/ Nadine, besides the fact that she's very relatable, is the fact that even though she does plenty of selfish and terrible things in the movie, you also understand where she's coming from and so, you feel bad for her while still understanding that she did selfish things.
Hailee Steinfeld has proven to be a phenomenal actress for her age (She's only 23!). True Grit, Bumblebee, Spiderman: Into the spiderverse, edge of seventeen, and others. I'm excited to see what roles she will take on in the future as she matures and builds her acting chops.
She starred in this Apple TV+ show called Dickinson that I like fairly well. The show has some problems, but I think her performance is definitely one of the highlights.
I love this review, I have the feeling that creators like you get much more possitive feedback when doing negative reviews, but personally I enjoy work that it shows you enjoyed doing! Also, I'd love videos on you discussing other subjects that are not movies. Keep it up!
She’s Beautiful AND a great actress. Everything a guy and girl would want in a lady!😂❤️ Nah, but in all seriousness Hailee’s actually pretty great. (TwT)
YES I was waiting for this video, I watched it for Hailee Steinfeld and stayed for the film. Nadine was so sympathetic and relatable as a teen but not validated or justified. I cringed at her actions but could understand where they were coming from, in my mind it was like "oh no, oh no sweetie that's not the way don't do it omg she did it, you f idiot"
Just one glaring error. The first thing a male teacher is told is 'make sure you're never alone in a classroom with a teen girl, unless there's a security camera recording to support your testimony'.
I thought it was pretty impressive how the movie was able to kind of make you experience things the way teenagers usually do. Like back when you were a teenager and something would happen between you and your parents or you and your friends, and deep down you knew it was only temporary and would blow over, but in that moment it felt like your whole world was crashing down on you. The movie was surprisingly good at relaying that feeling to the audience while still showing the problem for what it really was and not making it into something bigger.
So, my name is Tod, when that Todd Howard clip played and you said "Shut up Todd." I impulsively blurted out "Fuck off." and now I'm kinda just laughing at myself. On another note the more positive uploads are very welcome, not that there's anything wrong with a giving a shit film a well deserved autopsy.
Crazy Beany melissa benoist, his ex-wife, talked about how she was a victim of abuse from him and it just disgusts me to think that he was doing that to her while filming this. last i checked it was still on netflix.
Im so glad this movie got a positive review...It makes me feel less guilty about how much I loved this move as a 15 year old and even now as an almost 20 year old
I remember seeing the big reveal scene with Krista and Darien. In addition to your points, what happened there was against girl code (at least in my former teenage circle).
@@lhaigler1485 common thing in hollywood but in his case when this movie came out melissa hadn't exposed him yet. The good thing is she's okay now and it's happy with her family
Must admit if something similar had happened to me at that age, though I wouldn't have terrorized anyone, I would have been upset and hurt. At minimum, I would have expected my best friend to talk to me about it first, given she would know I'd have a problem with it. So I guess I should see this film. :) Thank you for reviewing.
I remember watching this movie when it came out as a 16 year old and just feeling confused and lonely. Like, I didnt like it. And I think it was because I saw a lot of Nadine in myself. And that made me mad and scared. I'll have to rewatch it now that I'm an adult. See how I feel about it now. Maybe use it as a way to self reflect.

Hi. It's the Up the Academy guy
Cynical Reviews You should do a video on 8th Grade. I've heard it's amazing from a lot, but some say it's bad. I'd like to hear your opinion.
I loved your review! By the way, did you know that the actor who played Erwin was 30 at the time this film was released?! 😮😉
I did know that, but he looks so young that it really didn't bother me.
I know it's just a minor detail ,but can we appreciate characters rewearing clothes for a second?
yeah, i’m glad they did it in sex education
@@TheBridget272 shout out to Lucille Ball for the realism!!

this movie is honestly so enjoyable, it's refreshing to see teen characters that actually act like teenagers, such a good movie

See, Netflix? Why aren't there more movies like THIS!? Instead of a creepy, sexualized pedophilia film, Cuties and terrible teencoms?
Apparently Cuties isn't a bad movie. But stupid ass Netflix sexualised them in the marketing-FALSE I FO I BELIEVED BELIEVED THE MOVIE WAS RELEASW
Well, Netflix doesn't want to spend a lot of money, which is why the writing is so bad. Probably they sent in a first draft and netflix said, "alright, we're doing this" without anyone ever actually reading it.
Cuties actually criticized the sexualisation of young girls in this society, but Netflix was stupid and sexualized young girls in their promos.
@@danielsosa63 ironic isnt it

Nothing is more annoying than a character who does terrible things but the movie expects to be sided with
Thank god this movie does it right
I know, I internally cheered the first time I watched it, as Nadine is condemned by the other characters and the film itself for her terrible choices, and she ACTUALLY apologises, changes and grows as a person throughout her journey! ♥️💕🙏
I love that about this movie! It explains why Nadine is such an asshole without excusing her behaviour the way she does and that is so refreshing!
I mean I like characters who do terrible things. More of that please.

It only becomes a problem when the movie doesn’t acknowledge their character’s actions as they are: shitty and flawed

The story of how Walt Disney made “The Jungle Book.”
@@kiraveritas3060 You are right, thank you for your comment.
Flora Posteschild that’s why you’re not really meant to diagnose teenagers with BPD, the opening text from the DSM-5 (APA, 2013) says an individual must show “A pervasive pattern of instability of interpersonal relationships, self-image, and affects, and marked impulsivity, beginning in early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts”

but then maybe it's because we are seeing things from her perspective only...

Her mom literally weaponized her fathers death against her and was not even a little bit remorseful - Nadine deserved better from her!!!

The second one is out
I really liked this movie, but I always felt like it really singled out Nadine to be the only bad guy.
I agree. I hated how the brother and bestfriend just let nadine go.

**SPOILERS:**
I just wanna say that Krista already did choose between Nadine and her brother, and that Nadine wasn't all in the wrong.
@@allyshortcake3807
I get what you're saying, and I agree with the premise (She doesn't need to be Nadine's caretaker.), that being said, after acting like one for so long, and knowing what she was like, you don't just drop her off, no contact, and hope for the best -- Assuming Krista had best in mind for Nadine and didn't just drop and forget about her until the movie's plot thought to remind her.

I was able to relate to Nadine so much. By the end, my face was soaked in tears. I started looking at my mistakes from then on, to be a good human. Such movies always have a positive impact on audience.
I related to her so much too
For the first time, I felt like the problems in a movie are real.
That's cool and all, but...

Well, I mean, it's Hailee Steinfeld, that already makes it like 10x better than 90% of those terrible teen comedy movies on Netflix.
All I can think about is that Hawkeye meme.

Feels weird to say its the best teen movie ever made bc its literally my life but no movie hits close to home like Edge of 17
I got to say that Hailee isn't a bad actress when you see her in the True Grit remake and Bumblebee film
"not bad"? She's great!
@@georgevelis4651 I meant it like an example where the actress can shine
@@Megatron_95 probably one of the best if not the best actress today.
Dang I'll need an eye test after reading the title
Dang I'll need an eye test after seeing the username and profile pic
Yeah sorry they're two different people just liked the photo and Funny Valentine is my favourite villain
@@domdude491 no need to apologise, I was just turning your words against you :)
OMYGHAD YES
there is something so raw and simple about this that doesnt leave you cringing. bc it can happen to literally anybody. especially with women :( plus the acting was 👌
You should try The Perks of being a wallflower if you have the time. This is the best in the genre I've ever seen.
The Edge Of Seventeen kind of reminds me of Eight Grade... when it comes to how good it is.
Honestly, I hope Hailee Steinfield takes a music hiatus (not a long one though) and act more films because I truly enjoy anything she is in asides from Pitch Perfect sequels :)
You may like the series Emily Dickinson, Hailee plays the protagonist and personally I think it's pretty good.
I loved her in Bumblebee, they better bring her back in the sequel
Andrea Bilbao ohh I’ve been seeing that a lot on RUclips. I just thought that was her character in the Pitch Perfect sequels so I didn’t even bother :)
yes, i love her acting so much, she's really talented for both, singing and acting
dickinson is REALLY good. she is involved in production too as she composed and sang for an original song for dickinson. and shes stellar in this, can always rely on her for a good performance
Easy A
Love, Simon
Juno
The perks of being a wallflower
Ferris Bueller's day off
Plenty of good teen movies out there.
Also, those other John Hughes teen movies especially the Breakfast Club lol
And Booksmart.
Ohhh, haven't heard of that one, thanks flxcerpsgsgahsvdvwhateveryourusernameis
Perks of being a wallflower
This is not a movie.
It's a blessing.
facts. just facts.
They say that Cynical Review’s heart grew ten times the size that day but because the human anatomy isn’t designed to have a heart suddenly grow ten times the size his heart crashed with in his rib cage killing him instantly
as a teenager who has been through this same situation, except it wasnt my brother it was my ex, i love this movie so much because it felt real
I'm not into teen movies but I have watched this movie a day or two after watching this video and I gotta say it makes me feel comfy especially at the end because it never does stupid things.
Glad you got to watch something nice for once! Everybody needs a break sometimes lol
But still.
I enjoyed this movie. Lady bird is another coming of age movie done right.
Well, there are some good teen movies out there, like Mean Girls and The Breakfast Club.
Very true. Mean Girls is a classic.
I don't like how you specifically avoided agreeing about the Breakfast Club.
@@just-trying-my-best-everyday lmfao right
The movie actually makes you empathize with a main character who is on the wrong, and the story concludes with her actually losing and bettering herself for it.
I think one of the main reasons you empathize w/ Nadine, besides the fact that she's very relatable, is the fact that even though she does plenty of selfish and terrible things in the movie, you also understand where she's coming from and so, you feel bad for her while still understanding that she did selfish things.
Me an intellectual: Off course, Lady Bird
A true intellectual
And eighth grade
We NEED Cynical to review 365 Days. That movie is such a shitfest, and with his commentary it'd be priceless.
Yay you took my suggestion! ☺️
Life goes on. 🤷🏾♀️
Thanks for the idea! Although I had already seen it and wanted to make a video on it ;)
Cynical Reviews you’re welcome!
Me, 1 hour 40 minutes ago: A good teen movie? Impossible!
Me, 1 hour 40 minutes later: A good teen movie indeed.
Their chemistry and dialogue was some of the best I've seen. Hope they work together again.
I like Hailee Steinfeld in this movie. This was before she started doing shitty teen rom coms like the Pitch Perfect sequels and lost ALL the respect.
She was nominated for a Oscar
She did this film inbetween pitch perfect 2 and 3 tho
Don't worry. She'll earn that respect back at some point.
To be fair before this she was in one of the worst movies of all time “barely lethal”
She starred in this Apple TV+ show called Dickinson that I like fairly well. The show has some problems, but I think her performance is definitely one of the highlights.
I also recommend "The Half of It" for those who haven't watched it
I love this review, I have the feeling that creators like you get much more possitive feedback when doing negative reviews, but personally I enjoy work that it shows you enjoyed doing! Also, I'd love videos on you discussing other subjects that are not movies. Keep it up!
Thanks, I appreciate that!
@@CynicalReviews ❤
I kind of want to see him do "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" or "To All the Boys I've Loved Before"
Hailee Steinfield is so underrated :(
She’s Beautiful AND a great actress. Everything a guy and girl would want in a lady!😂❤️
Nah, but in all seriousness Hailee’s actually pretty great. (TwT)
YES I was waiting for this video, I watched it for Hailee Steinfeld and stayed for the film.
Nadine was so sympathetic and relatable as a teen but not validated or justified. I cringed at her actions but could understand where they were coming from, in my mind it was like "oh no, oh no sweetie that's not the way don't do it omg she did it, you f idiot"
i lowkey ugly cried the whole movie. this is one of the most relatable and accurate movie for teens. 1000/10 period.
Tall girl: I'm tall, beat that.
Me: Renal patient, with 13 surgeries and thrombophylia
Thank you now I have a good movie to watch with my girlfriend
Enjoy!
Just one glaring error. The first thing a male teacher is told is 'make sure you're never alone in a classroom with a teen girl, unless there's a security camera recording to support your testimony'.
If it has Michael Keaton in it, it must be good.
woody harrelson?
@@Richard_Nickerson Sorry.
1:19 three TEENAGERS and a trench coat? That mf would be like 14 feet tall
Had to search for this as it wouldn't display on your channel.
RUclips being fucking lame again.
This is one of the few teen movies that does not feel like a bad fanfic.
YOU NEED TO REVIEW *ENOLA HOLMES* I AM SO CURIOUS ON WHAT YOUR THOUGHTS ARE ON THE FILM.
they two girls really looks like bestie instead of actors acting like they're best friends
One thing that broke the believability of the movie for me is the fact that no girl who looks as attractive as Hailee Steinfeld would have 1 friend.
Cynical explaining a movie:*makes a 30 min video*
Me trying to explain a movie : well uh you see there’s a um girl and she uh yeah her mom died
So, my name is Tod, when that Todd Howard clip played and you said "Shut up Todd." I impulsively blurted out "Fuck off." and now I'm kinda just laughing at myself. On another note the more positive uploads are very welcome, not that there's anything wrong with a giving a shit film a well deserved autopsy.
i absolutely love this movie but i haven’t been able to rewatch it since all that Blake Jenner stuff came up.
Crazy Beany melissa benoist, his ex-wife, talked about how she was a victim of abuse from him and it just disgusts me to think that he was doing that to her while filming this. last i checked it was still on netflix.
I don't know what it is exactly but I can't fricking stand Hailee Steinfeld as an actor.
I HATE the actor that plays his brother because he is a aggressor he assaulted his ex wife Melissa Benoist
SOMEONE mentioned it. Idk how outed abuser continue to get major roles and casting
Where's the "Cuties" livestream video? I can't find it.
