Thank you for pointing out the really pretty girl who no thinks is pretty trope. It’s like filmmakers think if a girl has had a boyfriend before or if other people acknowledge she’s not bad to look at no one will deem her relatable. It’s kind of annoying having suspend disbelief over and over bc Hollywood wants to have their cake and eat it too when it comes to casting leads. This is absolutely no shade to any of these leading ladies bc I’m a fan of many them. Hollywood writing / casting just seems to lack nuance with teen movies.
i understand this to an extent, but honestly my highschool had so many objectively gorgeous girls that nobody was interested in because of their social standing- whenever id point out how pretty they were, the boys would be shocked and disagree seemingly just because they had a different ‘role’ in school. there were the girls everyone was interested in, and the others. i think with hs hierarchies being so shallow people developed a hive mind on who was attractive.
I remember watching the edge of seventeen, and I don’t remember anyone calling Nadine ugly (I think I remember one boy comparing her to a cartoon character of some sort? But I think that was just to negatively compare her to her brother). I think Nadine’s problem was that she was socially awkward and didn’t know how to talk or interact with her peers, giving her a superiority complex and distancing herself from them altogether. The two times she does reach out to a boy in the movie, they immediately accept her proposal and they would both be considered decently attractive. Perhaps I’m wrong though.
While I like this film overall, I was disappointed that only Nadine ever gave an actual apology to people she'd hurt along the way. Nobody else apologised to her, especially her brother or mother, and it felt one sided for Nadine to shoulder all of the blame.
No same, not once did anyone apologize to her, like yeah she should've apologized to everyone but they should've to her too, it's not like they treated her amazingly.
She didnt even do anything bad they were an horrible family to her, her best friend too, trash, i really dont understand how she's the one apologising and how she just accepts how they treat her and move on i would just cut them out of my life
@@ilana8153 Nobody did anything that horrible to her actually, she had a chip on her shoulder that automatically put her on the defensive always. That's why she realized she was the one with the problem and apologized to her brother. I do agree the bro and her friend should have done a better job at reaching out though, but they themselves don't know how to socially deal with her type. The only one that did was Woody's character, thus the affinity.
I completely agree but also it’s realistic people who you apologize to even if they also did something wrong they are not obligated to apologize as well. They don’t feel they did some things wrong or they are not ready to apologize in the same time Nadine was.
i think the part that the film is about nothing is what i like about it. There doesn’t have to be something huge. Like you said a movie of a moment, which is something i enjoy. Not that deep , just a glimpse of someone’s life.
I agree with you . I guess I wanted a stronger streamline of events. Like the best friend and brother story felt like it was thrown in to add to Nadine’s turmoil without being developed.
I think this movie would fall under the “slice of life” genre. Lady Bird and Eighth Grade fit this too. I’m a big fan of those because you don’t have to really think hard but you can usually always relate someway to the characters.
@@Feliciatanktopthey probably know, they probably meant that there are Coming-Of-Age movies like Mean girls or Jawbreaker that plot-driven instead of character-driven
I am actually perplexed by how one of the only problems teenagers in these movies face are sexual relationships. Like, basically no one in my class dated - girls were too invested in anime and k-dramas, guys were more interested in video games and drinking behind school gates. No one wanted to have relationships and no one cared enough to try them. It kinda feels like too much of an American problem to me, this desire to date and have sex as soon as possible. We even made a presentation about it in University - how much movies and teen shows try to copy American television, and therefore loose their relatability to an average viewer in the countries where sexual relationships between minors and drug addiction is not a common thing.
It’s interesting right? On one hand I can’t personally relate because I was never that girl in high school but on the other hand, I did hear about it all throughout my school years from other students. What they were and weren’t engaging in.
Well, this movie is American, so it makes sense for this "very American problem" to show in this movie. Still, I agree with you. I've lived in the US my whole life, and I didn't date at all, and I knew other kids who also didn't date in high school either. I had crushes, but I focused more on other things too. Even the kids who did date and perform sexual acts had other priorities and/or interests, like after-school jobs, grades, after school clubs, sports, friends, family, hobbies, etc. I find it refreshing to see characters in high schools who's lives don't constantly revolve around sex, partying, romance, and being popular.
well it is an american movie. so maybe you dont relate to it because you arent american. but just because you dont relate to it doesnt mean it doesnt happen.
I actually liked this film a lot, it’s one of the few movies that actually made me tear up slightly bc I related a lot to Nadine and her struggles as a teenager. BUT I hated the ending fuck. Bc I’m glad Nadine realized her faults and apologized but NO ONE and I mean no one apologized to Nadine and honestly everyone really did need to. Her mom for being shitty. Her brother for being shitty and refusing to understand his sister. And krista mostly for kinda ditching her at the party knowing she’s socially not the best AND she literally asked her to go. Also I so agree that Nadine is pretty LMAO. And so is Erwin like what?
I really liked the brothers storyline too. Because in these movies, the older sibling who always does the right thing is usually pretty antagonized. Here, you can really see how much it takes for him to keep it together, to handle his mother & crazy sister who always got all the attention. What it does to a person at such a young age to be expected to never be the problem, always put everyone else and their drama first, and then no one seeing how much work that is. I'm always surprised when people comment on how much that one scene where he explains this changes everything to them, because to me this dynamic was so obvious, right from the first scene where he runs out of the car to meet his friends, while his little sister is causing yet another drama..
OH YEAH ?? Are U for Real ??! The Entire time of the Movie , We can CLEARLY SEE she's Been POORLY TREATED by her Own Mother(as Only Parent ,after the Trauma & LONELINESS She got after Losing Her Dad) !! HER MOTHER always Saw Her(Nadine) as Some Mischievous,Immature,Bad Person Even though SHE did NOTHING WRONG & HERSELF WAS Suffering Inside with LONELINESS, Extreme ANXIETY & DEPRESSION at times ! & Her Mother, On the Other hand, ALWAYS PUT Her ELDEST SON over the Pedestal , Calling & Reminding Him - He's the PERFECT SON, GREAT GUY, Etc !! I CAN DESCRIBE this Movie In 3 WORDS : "WRONGFUL CONDITIONING & PARTIALITY/FAVOURITISM " (shown by her Mother) & Don't even start about HER FRIEND Krista' ! She's Clearly Shown as a BITCH , sleeping Suddenly , Giving Handjob to Her Brother(even after Knowing Everything Wrong Going On with Nadine by her Family) ! SADLY , in the End, NADINE was the ONLY ONE APOLOGISING ! Not her brother, Not her Mother for Being Soo HARSH, NEGATIVE MINDED towards her as A Person !
Speaking as someone who was struggling with ✨childhood trauma✨ throughout school, teachers like that in so grateful for. I was out drinking and my third grade teacher saw me and when she realized who I was started crying. She said I had been the kid the staff didn’t think they could save. How they put up with all my shit because they knew I was acting out because I wasn’t being raised properly. And I think that’s why even tho this movie does have its issues, it’s really important when talking about teen films. Like if it wasn’t like teachers like that I probably wouldn’t have realized I was capable of being someone different than my mom. Great video btw 🥺🤲🏽❤️
While I liked the movie overall, it's interesting to hear your points about what didn't quite work for you. Nadine and Mr Bruner's relationship was definitely the highlight, in that he doesn't sugarcoat things, but has a hidden fondness towards her. Also, I wished that we'd gotten to see more of Nadine and Krista together, but Krista just trots around after Darian for the rest of the movie, ceasing to be plot relevant.
@@TheBlushBunny I think if anyone ends up being seen as an a-hole it was Krista because she never apologized for ditching her friend yet got an apology that felt undeserved.
5:51 i think nadine's the lightbulb moment starts at her teacher's house and ends when she hugs darian. her shock at the teacher's baby is played for laughs, but i think it's also meant to be the moment it really hits her that everyone isn't just a side character to her own life, but individuals with entire worlds that she doesn't know about. that idea is really hammered in when darian talks about the extent of how nadine and her mom's behavior affects his life. i include the hug because it's important to nadine's arc to understand that the people who've hurt her (and who she's hurt) still care about her. i wouldn't say that her lesson is "the world is not about me and the people in my life don't suck" but instead "the world is not about me and sometimes the people in my life suck, but it's not because everyone is against me." she admits that she likes to think that she's the only one with problems, and by acknowledging that, she can begin to understand the process behind the actions that she's been inadvertently hurt by. with that understanding, she can start to forgive and repair her relationships, which we see her doing by extending olive branches to krista, darian, and her mom. i liked that the interactions were awkward but hopeful, kind of giving the sense that it's only the beginning to both sides fully forgiving each other, but everyone is willing to try, it just felt like a nice beat to end on.
i was watching with my boyfriend and he rly liked it but like,,, when the brother gives her a hug after a really shitty night, he doesnt really check in on her or anything??? like she just apologised and stuff cool but she kinda did get shat on the whole film?? why was the only one who actually cared about her feelings, the nerdy guy who has a crush on her? not her mum, not her best friend or her brother. and the teacher did care in his own way but hes not her therapist and hes not likely to step over that line and engae with her emotions like that cos thats not their vibe together. idk it was so frustrating to see her just. decide to be happy? and forgive everyone and move on? like none of it was really that deep and maybe she was over re-acting?? i got gaslit by a film. bruhhhhhh
I think i liked the movie exactly for that, because it is about nothing. I feel like movies in general always have to be about something and have an specific plot. I enjoy the feeling that the movie isnt like that, because i think life is generally about nothing.
I LOVE this movie, but it also makes me so mad because Nadine learns that she needs takes the accountability for what transpired. Like maybe im just a worst person than Nadine but her friend was the worst?! If my friend had a hookup with my bro and then proceeded to pursue a relationship with him even after I expressed how awful that made me feel, I'd be mad too. Nadine has her flaws but i dont think the lesson needed to include turning a blind eye to everything her friend did.
I liked that Nadine is a stereotypical angsty high school character: finds herself in drama. But then the movie treats it all realistically, and everyone just tells her to stop being so toxic and dramatic. It basically exposes other movies for setting a bad example for a teenage audience.
GREAT TAKE and this is the same issue I have with Eight Grade...........It wants us to feel sorry for the main character when she's living in setting that most poor kids WISH they could be in.......
I feel like this movie was about Nadine navigating her life while staying in a bubble of self pity. Like she spent the whole movie hating the world and herself and pretty much everything and just projecting her insecurities onto everyone around her, to the point where she couldn’t form a bond with even her family. And near the end of the movie she sort of realized SHE is in control of her life. And that to me is what made this movie so good, because of the relatability. It’s extremely comforting to have a movie that portrays these feelings.
Agreed, while I liked the movie, it's interesting to hear from the perspective of someone who didn't enjoy it, since I've only ever heard positive things about it.
I usually agree with most of what you have to say about films, so I'm really sad that I have to write this. With all respect, I sincerely think the plot (and purpose) of this film went right over your head. This movie, while it does cover all of the topics you mentioned at the beginning like sibling rivalry and a toxic relationship between a mother and a daughter, isn't actually about those things when it comes down to it. You said there's no point, and I think you're extremely wrong on that. The point of this film, in my and many other's opinions, is to show just how self-absorbed and self-sabotaging people can be - especially teenagers who are coming of age and struggling with mental illness. In most films and stories, the protagonist is likable and easy-going, and optimistic. And that's not actually very realistic. It's sad to say but a lot of people in the world are selfish and impulsive. They make mistakes, they treat the people they care about like sh-t when they don't get their way, they struggle with anxiety or depression or anger issues, and they sabotage themselves in order to feel sorry for themselves. These are things that a lot of people experience in some way, shape or form. And that's the point of the film. It's telling you a story from the perspective of someone that carries a lot of anger inside of them. Someone who lashes out at the people they love. Someone who can't see past themself, and never considers how the people around them are feeling. Someone who constantly digs themself into a deeper and deeper hole, until they realize that they are the only thing really holding them back. That is why the film doesn't focus too much on the actual relationship between Nadine and her best friend, her brother, or her mom. Sure, we see all of these things on a surface level, but the story essentially is just about Nadine. It's about her and her relationship with herself. She's not supposed to be this really "likable" character that's easily understood. Her character is complex and messy and toxic for a reason. We watch as she navigates her own self-destructive behavior and tendencies, and how she learns to deal with them. This is why I love the film, and why so many others do too. Because I saw a lot of myself in her. I saw just how toxic and self-destructive I was growing up and sometimes still can be, and it was actually extremely comforting to watch someone else feel that way too. It was also comforting to see her finally realize that all of the things she'd done and said only caused her more pain - and how she decided, in the end, to be a better person and apologize and finally make an effort to consider how her actions made other people feel. Like before, she would use Erwin and his company just to make herself feel better and only gave him attention when it was convenient for her. But by the end, once she realized that it's important to appreciate the people in her life, she went to his show and celebrated his success as an aspiring filmmaker. This also shows when her brother goes to pick her up from her teacher's house and finally tells her how he truly feels. She realizes that she's never even considered how the death of their father has shifted the weight and responsibility of helping support their family onto his shoulders. She never considered that his relationship with her best friend was something that brought him relief, and made both of them happy. She was angry to see the people in her life be happy without her, because she was deeply unhappy. And she came to this realization at the end after she put herself in a corner and pushed everyone in her life so far away from her that it took her brother screaming at her and telling her exactly what she wanted to hear to finally wake her up. His monologue when he's standing in the doorway of her teacher's house was the turning point for her. At that point, so far everyone in her life had only invalidated her. Her best friend (understandably) gave up on their friendship after Nadine pushed her away. Her brother consistently made fun of her. Her mother was constantly expressing her favoritism for her brother, and literally called Nadine a disappointment. Her teacher mocked her comments about s-ic-de and constantly joked about how unlikable and dramatic she is. Erwin called her out for leading him on and being inconsiderate. And it wasn't until her brother finally told her "you're right" and confirmed everything she was feeling that Nadine realized that her behavior was wrong. All she wanted was for someone, anyone, to understand her and validate her. And once that was given to her, it didn't make her feel better. It didn't make anything better. It only made her realize, "oh... Maybe that wasn't the problem this whole time. Maybe the problem was me seeking validation, rather than taking accountability for my mistakes." I think this film does a tremendous job displaying just how complex grief, projection, anger, and depression can be - especially for young people. The theme of this movie is self-discovery and self-reflection. It's about how sometimes people cope with trauma in unhealthy ways, and how grief can consume you. I will always support this film, it helped me so much when I was a teenager and it was a huge relief to me to finally see a main character who was flawed and hurting, and struggling to see the wrong in their ways. I think you should definitely watch it again but this time focus more on Nadine and her relationship with herself. Perhaps you'll see it too. Also sorry this was so long lol I just really love this movie and feel a strong need to defend it. Regardless of your views on it, I still love your channel and videos, and I appreciate your commentary on films whether I agree or disagree! So don't worry, no unsubscribing from me.
Well first I want to say thank you for taking the time to write this. It’s very clear that you have a deep connection to the film and I always find value in people seeing themselves in media. I see your point of view. But just from my first watch, I don’t feel the filmmakers did a thorough job of actually conveying to the audience everything you mentioned. You do have a great perspective though so I’ll give it another look. 🐇💕 Thanks for staying subscribed! Lol
I'm glad that somebody understands the value in a movie committed to portraying just one crazy period in an adolescent's life, and not feeling like there needs to be an "endgame" to every teenage film like Blush Bunny said, and I'm even more glad that somebody is willing to defend the merit behind a self-absorbed and self-sabotaging protagonist (as someone who strongly identifies their youth as synonymous with those traits) -- but Lord, PARAGRAPHS PLEASE!!!
@@helenalim4906 I'm sorry I know I should've broken it up into paragraphs but I thought that would just make the comment appear even longer 😭 Thank you for understanding my perspective though and I'm glad to know I'm not alone in my admiration for this film, the story, and the protagonist.
@@TheBlushBunny I understand! Everyone perceives media differently and is 100% entitled to their own opinions. I still appreciate your thoughts on it and am glad that you took the time to read what I had to say, so thank you. Much love. ❤️
To me, everyone wanted to be friends with Krista at the party because they didn’t know her well cause she was only ever hanging with Nadine. Earlier in the scene where Nadine is puking and Krista is holding her hair was supposed to show that Nadine just totally relies on Krista 100% for emotional support (also in the opening montage a bit) and probably doesn’t let her branch out and make other friends. Krista gets with the brother cause he’s already living in the same house as Nadine so like, he’s there, she has proximity to SOMEONE, and then gets other friends through him. It’s a bit dramatic but as someone who’s been in toxic friendships where one person takes up 100% of your time and demands you be 100% of everything to them and only them, that rang true. Nadine acted terribly to Krista x her brother because it’s her brother yeah, but she probably would have been jealous if Krista had gotten a different boyfriend. It showed that Nadine needed to branch out and talk to other people instead of only the one who accepted her abrasive personality and let her dump everything on them.
Honestly I watched the movie right after a friend betrayal so I got more out of it than maybe the general viewer. But I liked your points and agree. And I agree with a lot of the commenters here, it was weird Nadine was the only one to apologize even when her brother and mother did some pretty cruel things.
I did like the film and I just hoped it'd give more reassurance that things would truly be okay by the end . I wanted the movie to show her mom, brother and friend having a serious talk about whatever issues they had. None of that happened. Nadine: sorry I'm still depressed and lost about my dad's death a few years ago Everyone except cool teacher: It's okay we forgive you but we did nothing wrong to you
This movie will always have a special place in my heart, since I was 17 when it came out and it happened to be the first R-rated movie I saw in the theater. At the time, I related hardcore to Nadine, being someone with only one real friend that I depended probably too much on and having all sorts of complicated relationships with my parents. Since then, I've rewatched it 2 or 3 times and I can see how flawed Nadine is as a protagonist from the start. That said, everyone is portrayed with some flaws, except for maybe the father who has 10 minutes of screen time. You're right about the movie being about nothing in particular and I recall trying to convince a friend to watch it with me and having trouble explaining the plot in an interesting way. But that's kinda the perk of it all. Life as a teenager is mostly monotonous, but the hormonal changes of adolescence make the smallest things so dramatic. I'd say one point you're wrong about is Krista's interest in Darien. The first scene at school, Nadine is telling a story to Krista and you can clearly see her eyes gazing over to Darien. This is before the party in which they hook up.
i cannot tell you how long i have been waiting for someone to post an analysis on this film!!! i feel v sad after watching a movie and finding out that no one on youtube talks about it lol is that weird. tysm for this! 💝
I completely agree with your review, I have a very big love-hate relationship with this film. The love part comes from the fact that this movie was my life and I was Nadine, and I never seen a movie, portray, anxiety and depression the way that they did hear my biggest hate relationship with the film is the fact that this girl has legit problem, and she never got any help for it, and nobody apologize to her even though she was owed a huge apology, and all of her problems were just fixed the end of the film like magic when that’s not how life works.
I personally loved the movie. You make a good point about the lack of development between some of the characters' relationships (it would've been nice to see some cues that krista was interested in darian before their relationship was sprung on us---but regarding nadine and krista, i think their relationship as 2-best-friends-against-the-world was well enough established through the backstory), however i think overall the movie was pretty well-paced and nadine's character was written really well. about the movie being about nothing: i think thats what gives it the charm that's stolen the hearts of so many people. its not over the top and it doesnt rely on exaggerated plot points, cliches, stereotypes and tropes like many netflix original coming of age movies do (im looking at you the kissing booth, tall girl, after, and to all the boys ive loved before). it's down to earth, each character has a reason for their behavior, and about the anticlimactic ending: i think that was the point. there doesnt always need to be some grand resolve or happy ending. nadine earned some perspective on those around her, she apologized and made amends, she accepted a new friend into her life, her mother eased up, her brother understands her better and that's all thats really needed.
I get what you’re saying, I do. But I still feel like it could’ve been stronger. Not in a dramatic, over the top way. But just give us a bit more. I respect your perspective though.
I think your incorrect about your assertion that The Edge of Seventeen is about nothing. This is because The Edge of Seventeen is very similar to another piece of media famously criticized for “being about nothing” ; Catcher and the Rye. While the movie does play into tropes, it functionally build upon them and with powerful dialogue to boot. Nadine’s story (like Hilden’s) functions as a powerful argument against Nihilism and Depression. While yes, Nadine doesn’t apologize to some of the people she hurt (her mother), if you watch the movie Nadine’s mother is the worst. And the way she previously acted in the context of the movie doesn’t really deserve one either.
I see your point of view. I’m going to give it another viewing to see if I pick up on it. Someone else mentioned this. But from the first watch I don’t think the filmmakers truly conveyed that.
I agree with the fact that Hailee was too hot yo be believable as an outcast, I mean that wimpy short hair look when she was 13 could have worked to hide her beauty, but by the time she is 16 she does look objectively good and it feels weird that even the ugly stoner chick says she looks like Danny DeVito (WTF?). They should have given her a more pointed attitude problem to justify her awkwardness (it's not that it doesn't happen irl that hot chicks get outcast, but it is very rare and takes you out of the film a bit).
@@TheBlushBunny Yep. I mean, usually when a hot chick/guy is insecure/awkward/quiet, people do treat them nicely and interpret them as "mysterious/humble/nice" rather than "creepy/loser". Now, if she had a markedly problematic behavioral problem it would have felt more normal for her to be so isolated. With She's All That at least they had the lame "overall and glasses" excuses lol.
most outcasts i know are very pretty but are very quiet. its one of those things where some people arent attracted to your personality so theyll find someone else that can fit that role. i feel like nadine fits this well seeing how she cant socialize well with others so its like really weird
I actually loved this movie. I really liked the relationship of nadine and her brother towards the end, and how much he clearly cares about her. I also thought it was extremely relatable to me, especially how she views herself when she was throwing up and she was talking to Krista she was saying how she doesn’t like herself, and she can’t believe that she has to live the rest of her life with herself. Which I really related to. I just really related to Nadine as a character
This is one of my all-time favorite movies so going into this, I was prepared to hear commentary I might not agree with. Suffice it to say, I agreed with all your points. Most of the characters and their relationships are pretty half-baked, especially Nadine/Krista and Nadine/Darian. There's no truly high stakes in losing Krista and even though she makes a pretty big mess of things, Nadine never does get the apologies (or at least heartfelt talks) she deserves. One can only assume that it happens beyond the movie. The only talking point I thought was missing is the grief aspect. Nadine's life is colored by the pain of losing her dad. She clings to Krista because Krista is the only constant in her life and in losing her to Darian, Nadine becomes this self-destructive person who is slowly rejoin the world by Mr. Bruner and Erwin. That's why the ending is so good. Erwin takes the step Krista never did by bringing her into the group and you can see that she's going to be alright, that she's taking steps to be a little braver. It's not a big grand finale, as you say, but it's a reminder that the little things really do matter and that there really is hope. Overall, great observations from you as always. I love your videos. Keep up the good work!
I did like this movie a lot especially since Nadine is going through an awkward situation of a relative dating a best friend- which is something I went through, and its not a fun position to be in. (tho nadine's bf was a lot nicer about it than my former best friend). Ppl may think her reaction is dramatic but I think its reasonable, bc that's how I felt inside. I don't like the fact that somehow Nadine gets blamed for everything and needs to apologize (which she does need to, she was a jerk) while everyone else does not need to apologize to her when in reality they also were not treating her well. Also her friend ditched her at a party, that's a shitty move.
I love what you said, but the one thing that I do have to say is that there is an actual topic (more like a conflict) that moves the movie and that is Nadine's questioning of "should everyone else's happiness be above mine?" and I think you can see it a lot with her mom, brother and best friend. We see her in this starting point in which she is happy with her best friend (despite hating her brother and having a bad relationship with her mom), and there's a shift once her friend and brother hook up and realizes that she "never gets to be happy" so she takes it out on the people around her, wanting them to feel what she feels (I'm sorry if this was unclear lol)
You pointed out a alot of things I missed in my own video. But I personally felt like more context between Nadine and Darian could've really helped give insight on why they're so much tension with each other. I feel some scenes of their father being alive would've really gave the movie some weight. But great video, better than my honestly since you had a little more clarity and grasps on the films concepts.
tHANK YOU!!! I remember watching this movie around last year and being SO unbelievably underwhelmed. Maybe I just disliked Nadine as a character or maybe it was the lack of actual character of,,, all of the characters. I wasn't rooting for anyone, I wasn't hoping for a certain ending. it was just so flat to me
I watched this movie for the first time a few years ago, right after watching Pitch Perfect 2 because I liked Hailee Steinfeld as an actress. Blush Bunny, if you like these teen coming of age movies, watch The To Do List. You'll laugh, you'll snort. It's a bit pervy, so don't watch it with other people, but if you like these type of movies, you'll enjoy it.
A film like ''Edge of Seventeen'' works if you're seeking something ''very specific'' or ''familiar to your needs''.........Like for me, I'm into stuff like the Twilight and Harry Potter franchises.......So even though EOf17 doesn't fit those genres, it fits the attitude or tone of those franchises.
I don’t understand why we have to nitpick every film to find a flaw. Ofc everyone’s entitled to their own opinion but it’s like every show or movie everyone’s loved is criticised on yt. This movie is great and not problematic (to me at least) and even if it has minor flaws that I’m not noticing why do we have to make it about them? I relate so much with nadine in many aspects and for being that relatable it’s a great movie, and it’s not about nothing either, it’s about a depressed girl coming of age, does every movie need a grand purpose? No. Good movies can exist without a groundbreaking plot
I haven’t watched the video yet but I wanna comment on the fact that this movie pissed me off so much because they painting Hailee Steinfeld as the bad guy when she was having feelings and she never got like justice if you know what I mean
I hated how Nadine was the one to apologize whilst everyone around her including her family refused to acknowledge their shit actions, I mean they didn’t even care to notice that Nadine wasn’t just angry but depressed! The mother literally brings up their father as a way to hurt her daughter but never gets confronted, the brother talks about his pain but ignores his sister yet he’s the one who gets the apology speech, yes he gets a lot of pressure by the mother but in the end at least he has his mother who loves him and his friends, Nadine had no one and he even let’s her what know it! It was a disappointing movie. She was not the only problem in that movie! No one brings up that fact that she witnessed her father dying, expecting her to just move on, the movie was ridiculous
er, what a strange topic for a movie (ew) lmao. I prefer to ‘watch’ these movies through your commentary videos. I prefer it with your humor and lens, much better imo. lowkey has me feeling grateful im a seasoned adult and far removed from being that young anymore, so complicated and messy lol. Ty!
Whew! I’m there with you girl. So happy those years are long gone. Lol But the movie is on Netflix til the 31st. It’s not bad. The development could’ve just been a little better.
To shorten my idea i think the edge of seventeen is literally the meaning of the movie title its kinda like a what the teenage mind looks like from a first person perspective vs third like other movies like sierra burgess is a loser (i dislike that movie alot😭)
I mean I think the reason people started being interested in Krista is because she showed up to a party with Darien, as opposed to being reclusive with Nadine like normal 😂And she's likable, so she starts making friends like people naturally do.
Oh please!!!! This is a coming-of-age story. Are you going to tell me, after easily identifying common plot tropes, that you would completely miss the genre!??? That nothing happens is kind of the point. The climax is when she grows up a little. That's what coming-of-age stories are all about. An epiphany. The character couldn't see something about him (think Catcher in the Rye) or herself in this case, and then through the plot, discovers something. What did you expect, car chases and explosions? A character study like Joker? Wrong genres. You criticize the movie within its context. I have a sneaking suspicion, that if there were more foreshadowing and character development, you'd criticize that it was unnecessary. Kafkaesque criticism. Within this genre, at that time, this film worked. The box office receipts more or less prove it. It's not your cup of tea. OK. So what?
The whole film is framed around Nadine and deconstructing her very narrow cynical view of the world/people around her. We don't get a scene showing that it was just Nadine and Christa versus the world because it never was. Nadine has this mentality that is her vs. everyone/the world and throughout the movie this is challenged by subverted what she thinks she already knows about the other characters via her biased assumptions. Her mother is a parallel to her behavior. It's about perspective and self-hatred.
Yeah, it's a coming of age film of a white privileged quirky girl learning how to emotionally grow but there was a lot more going on that made it realistic. She grew up with what looks like only one male figure (Dad) and one female figure (her best friend) giving her any kindness in life and knowing how to deal with her moods. Her mother just seems to keep trying to out compete her in immaturity. Nadine witnesses her father have a heart attack, die, and nearly gets into a car crash, after which she has to run out into the night to find help. And like so many girls, her trauma isn't addressed. She is the scapegoat because she is a difficult personality. She seeks a substitute for male attention and figures out that such just won't fix her life, fortunately without further trauma, just embarassment. Her teacher becomes a surrogate father. She learns how to get on without constantly using her best friend as an emotional crutch. She learns to recognize her mother's and brother's trauma, but yes she still gets to be the scapegoat and not get what she needs from anyone, except her mother deciding to take a step to back off. But despite the failings of others around her she decides to change what SHE doesn't like about herself and dare to make the effort to be kind and attentive to her new boyfriend and his crowd. This is a far better story than 98% of teen movies. Let's talk about how Spectacular Now lied to us about being the quintessential coming of age movie of Gen Z when it's really about a young alcoholic and abusive young man who is pretty much being allowed to dumpster fire his life with no consequence to himself for those who get burned by him along the way, with the wishful thinking that he can change because somehow there is "more to him" than he gives himself credit for.
@@TheBlushBunny omg it was hyped up to be this huge coming of age story that’s supposed to be real deep and profound.. but ended up just being hella pretentious and mid lol 😂 that’s just my opinion thooo
I couldn’t stand this movie. The main character is far from relatable. She treats everyone horribly and ends up rewarded with her shitty behavior. Other than one half assed apology , she never reckons with her mistakes or tries to correct them. It’s entertaining for a while , but eventually her behavior just annoys anyone trying to watch this movie. She’s just insufferable. There have been unsympathetic protagonists in movies, but they are usually somewhat like able even if they are evil.
No like why is this movie so bad, it's so boring and realize completely on the star actress (who at the time was not very experienced imo). It is so cookie cutter and generic. It feels like there's no meaning to anything in the movie it's just another big Hollywood fake indie protect. Hollywood saw how it was popular to make a coming of age film and was one of the first to jump to it before everything got saturated. That's the only reason it's popular.
Exactly. This! All of this.
Lol, at least they tried to tone down her gorgeous makeup throughout, instead of giving Amanda Seyfried in *Jennifer's Body* energy.
i understand this to an extent, but honestly my highschool had so many objectively gorgeous girls that nobody was interested in because of their social standing- whenever id point out how pretty they were, the boys would be shocked and disagree seemingly just because they had a different ‘role’ in school. there were the girls everyone was interested in, and the others. i think with hs hierarchies being so shallow people developed a hive mind on who was attractive.
@@chickenfoot2423 That's true, but it still feels strange put in film since social dynamics don't translate so well to a 120- mins medium.
Nah her family kind of treated her like crap. It’s the way they talk to her. They never even showed her sympathy after she lost her father.
True.
I think it’s character driven
They’re called “Coming of Age” films
Agree, I wonder where are you from?
In America sexual relationships are extremely common and so is drug addiction, and it's an American movie
I liked what they did with the brothers character as well. A “what meets the eye is not always as it seems” moment.
I CAN DESCRIBE this Movie In 3 WORDS : "WRONGFUL CONDITIONING & PARTIALITY/FAVOURITISM " (shown by her Mother)
& Don't even start about HER FRIEND Krista' !
I absolutely agree with you. And so happy to hear that you had those teachers wanting the best for you and looking out for you 💕
I honestly feel like the worst parts of myself come together as Nadine
Wow. Now this is a statement lol
same 💀
While I liked the movie overall, it's interesting to hear your points about what didn't quite work for you.
Yea I think if we’d seen a bit more of Nadine and Krista, the plot would have resinated more with me. Would have given the film a stronger drive.
I respect that.
I am upset they didn't release this movie at the end of 2017 so the title would be a double entendre 😭☝️
Marketing team was down bad. lol
Nah cuz why is hailee steinfeld fatherless in every role💀
Oh wow lol I wonder why
She could be speaking to a SPECIFIC audience through her work and probably just isn't your typical mainstream artist.
i feel like ladybird did this borderline abusive mother thing 1000% better and more impactful
This movies been requested. I gotta check it out.
exactly! ladybird displayed it more realistically especially during the scenes at the thrift store
@@TheBlushBunny Lady Bird is pretty good until you realize it’s just a ripoff of Real Women Have Curves. You should do a video about that
@@MichelleyyDee they are completely different movies maybe with the same core themes
I totally agree! I really thought Kristel was a bad friend she was so quick to drop her friend for a boy and her friend's brother at that. Ew.
Oh glad to know I'm not alone on my feelings about this movie.
Agreed, while I liked the movie, it's interesting to hear from the perspective of someone who didn't enjoy it, since I've only ever heard positive things about it.
I enjoyed it. I guess I was just expecting a bit more.
Thanks for staying subscribed!
Much love. ❤️
This was a well-explained defense, honestly, aurora. I read all of it-don't apologize for the length
Good take.
@@TheBlushBunny thank you!!! ☺️
Honestly I watched the movie right after a friend betrayal so I got more out of it than maybe the general viewer. But I liked your points and agree. And I agree with a lot of the commenters here, it was weird Nadine was the only one to apologize even when her brother and mother did some pretty cruel things.
I can see why it would resonate with you.
I did like the film and I just hoped it'd give more reassurance that things would truly be okay by the end . I wanted the movie to show her mom, brother and friend having a serious talk about whatever issues they had. None of that happened.
Nadine: sorry I'm still depressed and lost about my dad's death a few years ago
Everyone except cool teacher:
It's okay we forgive you but we did nothing wrong to you
This movie will always have a special place in my heart, since I was 17 when it came out and it happened to be the first R-rated movie I saw in the theater.
I just love this movie
We really need more like these
Some more beautiful and relaxing movies especially for teens
I completely agree with your review, I have a very big love-hate relationship with this film. The love part comes from the fact that this movie was my life and I was Nadine, and I never seen a movie, portray, anxiety and depression the way that they did hear my biggest hate relationship with the film is the fact that this girl has legit problem, and she never got any help for it, and nobody apologize to her even though she was owed a huge apology, and all of her problems were just fixed the end of the film like magic when that’s not how life works.
nadine was cuter than her friend and her brother lol
Agreed. Those minor tweaks would have made a world of difference.
I remember watching this, I didn’t know that it was hyped like that…
I actually loved this movie.
Great take. And thanks for hearing me out lol
I see where you’re coming from.
i knew krista and darien were gonna get together cuz they look like siblings…
TWO vids in ONE week?! i like this😎😎
Right?! Look at us over here discussing two different works in the same week lol
I’m subscribing! Never seen this movie but you explained your opinions in depth and you seem cool 🤣
Thank you for subscribing and welcome!💕🐇 I am the coolest person ever. Ask any of my two friends. Lol
Ngl you ain’t lying 😂. I felt like I was a hater when I watched it and disliked it when I was younger.
It's actually a good movie, I watched it before it was on Netflix.
2:20 I really liked this bit, want expecting that one 🤣
"... don't unsubscribe"
lol I don’t honestly care about the plots or storylines, I just hate the fact that they used “to build a home” like I heard this song EVERYWHERE
Lol now this is a take I didn’t expect lol
3 minutes in and i was like "oh shit she's spitting facts"
Haha!
tHANK YOU!!! I remember watching this movie around last year and being SO unbelievably underwhelmed. Maybe I just disliked Nadine as a character or maybe it was the lack of actual character of,,, all of the characters. I wasn't rooting for anyone, I wasn't hoping for a certain ending. it was just so flat to me
It was definitely underwhelming especially with all of the hype surrounding it
This is just 1st world problems: the movie
At least it has a better ending than Superbad
1st world problems lol that’s funny.
this movie tries so hard to convince you Hailey isn't attractive the same way the duff tries so hard to do the same with Mae Withman
According to my Netflix account I watched this movie but I don't remember it at all
Yikes lol well if you get a chance to rewatch it before the 31st (last day on Netflix) then come back and tell me what you think.
No. Good movies can exist without a groundbreaking plot
the way the beginning is technically cliché but exactly wut happened to me irl👀👀HGHV
YOUR INTRO IS SO CUTE
Love that eeney meeny miny moe part! 😂
er, what a strange topic for a movie (ew) lmao.
Lol
But the movie is on Netflix til the 31st.
This is a great way to look at it.
.....is that it's perfect? Agreed.
i've actually watched it with no hype and still didn't like it, although it is the kind of movie i usually enjoy
Ok this is interesting…I would love to hear from you what made you not like this particular film.
I mean I think the reason people started being interested in Krista is because she showed up to a party with Darien, as opposed to being reclusive with Nadine like normal 😂And she's likable, so she starts making friends like people naturally do.
Hey Blush! ❤️
Hey girl! I saw your comment on the glee video but for some reason every time I went to reply it disappeared.
@@TheBlushBunny hahaha, thats weirddd
I didn’t unsubscribe. I’ve clicked like. I am very susceptible to influence. 😝
Haha!! Thank you love 💕
i won’t unsubscribe lol love ur channel
Thanks!! Lol 🐇💕
You probably just don’t like slice of life films in general. Not your fault if you don’t like it. Different strokes for different folks.
OK. So what?
I don’t like the movie but I found myself still watching it
Lol wow. How come?
Great video!!
the movie amounts to nothing i completely agree with you
I never watched it because after watching the trailer I never understood what the plot of the movie was either 😂
Lol it’s everything lol
When I watched this movie I felt like I had to like it bc it’s a teen drama but it’s so boring man lol
😩
It's a slice of life kinda movie, maybe that's not your thing
Sometimes I like to hear people complain
Haha! Right? It’s good to do it every now and then. Lol
After!! Its a netflix film!!
This film is so full of itself, and pointless. It thinks it is making a profound statement, when it is really not.
It was very underwhelming
I was definitely expecting more.
@@TheBlushBunny same, my mom watched it and liked it and for me it just flopped
Heyy, I love your videos :)
Glad you’re enjoying love 💕
Girl you crazy...crazy funny 🤣🤣🤣👍
2:25 🤣🤣 liked and subscribed!
Lol thanks love! And welcome! 🐇💕
2:24 sent me 😂
😂
I found Nadine to just be insufferable 😭 she was so unlikable to me
😩
i didn't like this movie at all i found it lame and the ending was so weak and i was shocked finding out ppl liked it
It was definitely overhyped.
Am i the only one that i dont think the brother is cute I don’t really see it do u
I don’t think he’s hot, but I can see the appeal He’s muscular has conventionally attractive features and an outgoing personality so it makes sense
@@Yourlocalprocrastinator he does give me evan peters vibes
Please review Shadowhunters : mortal instruments on Netflix
I mean the movie was kinda mid haha but I mean I still kinda liked it I guess but yeah, there wasn’t a real plot really
Everybody is disagreeing with me so maybe we missed it lol
2nd fave movie
BUT ANYWAYS Lmfaoooo
It's R so It's an adult/predator movie
Girl what???
Cough Ladybird cough cough 😒
I haven’t seen it yet but I’m guessing you think it’s a rip-off? Lol
@@TheBlushBunny omg it was hyped up to be this huge coming of age story that’s supposed to be real deep and profound.. but ended up just being hella pretentious and mid lol 😂 that’s just my opinion thooo
Same

I couldn’t stand this movie. The main character is far from relatable. She treats everyone horribly and ends up rewarded with her shitty behavior. Other than one half assed apology , she never reckons with her mistakes or tries to correct them. It’s entertaining for a while , but eventually her behavior just annoys anyone trying to watch this movie. She’s just insufferable. There have been unsympathetic protagonists in movies, but they are usually somewhat like able even if they are evil.
Please tell me this is rage baiting you’re not actually the stupid
No like why is this movie so bad, it's so boring and realize completely on the star actress (who at the time was not very experienced imo). It is so cookie cutter and generic. It feels like there's no meaning to anything in the movie it's just another big Hollywood fake indie protect. Hollywood saw how it was popular to make a coming of age film and was one of the first to jump to it before everything got saturated. That's the only reason it's popular.
“Big Hollywood Fake Indie Project” is taking me out 😂😂😂. Because I know exactly what you mean by that.
