Laci, as a longtime subscriber I have to agree with a lot of your points. I used to be VERY strong in my beliefs and wouldn't hear others opinions. However, this past two years I've really opened my mind. I'm a lot more moderate than I thought! I'm subscribed to both left and right leaning channels now, and I hold beliefs from both sides. I'm glad you seem to be going down a similar path, and are willing to hold a civil conversation with those who hold opposing beliefs. It's a very healthy thing to do, much healthier than getting instantly angry and shutting those views out.
Korrina Young This is the real human bond we have with each other. When ideas are censored, we are stagnant in progress and conflict is ongoing throughout history. Most of the major things that are popular in this technological era has been unknown or less popular ideas being adapted. Which would not come to pass without uncensored speech and being able to practice those ideals in a free society.

The hatred one receives for being open minded to others people's worldviews almost makes it feel like it's not about the truth at all... That is only if they talk in the form of a debate, even if I had months to prepare for a debate against him on a subject I disagree with him on, and it was sprung on him a day in advance he could debate circles around me. girl im with you. there are very few people that actually want to properly have a debate or conversation with me about issues without being nasty. i told a friend of mine, who often debates with me in a way that is polite and proper, that if neither person learns something, even about the opposite viewpoint, than it's not a debate or a dialogue.

That's probably because most people don't debate with the expectation that their own beliefs or opinions might change. They only do so to change the beliefs or opinions of the person they are debating.

It's not easy. I have had some really difficult times engaging with people with the opposite views to me. But it has been worth it. You have to deal with all sorts of emotions, even anger and disgust. And this was not only felt towards them but even myself at points. Neuroscientists have done studies looking at the brain activity of people when challenged about their ideologies. And the same part of the brain is engaged that also reacts to a personal attack. We are almost hard wired to be defensive even though it is just challenging an idea.
I understand, maybe I shouldn't have used the word extreme, but by extreme I inteded militant in the sense of being completely confident and convinced in our position. A strong position should be able to be questioned to further validate and evaluate its self. I don't believe that the truth is between two opposite opinions, that would be silly, I'm not inciting complete nihilism and absence of values, but where things get complicated it becomes dangerous when people don't constantly challenge themselves, when a group of people decides what is right for ever it becomes very dangerous, be that from any position... It's been 5 years, I don't think anyone will ever see this anyways, and I'm rewatching some old liked videos. Are all ideas worth discussing? At the risk of oversimplifying, No. No matter what you believe, I guarantee you that there is some solid line you will draw that you are not even slightly considering discussing. Is that a moral failing? An intellectual one? Here's an easy pitch: no, it's not worth discussing whether or not the earth is flat. Why? Because there's nothing to discuss. It's not a matter of hegemony, it's that one "side" uses evidence, and the other just straight-up refuses to. You cannot win a "debate" with a flat earther. They, as a rule, do not believe anything you can give as evidence. You can personally take them up to see the curvature of the earth, and they will have decided halfway up that you've put them in a simulation. They can, of their own devising, test that at a certain distance, a beam of light will not reach the same spot based on the curvature, and they will come up with another reason why. If you give them an opportunity to speak beyond their echo chamber, all you are doing is allowing them to put *dis*information into an otherwise innoculated audience. Those who do not know any better (everyone is vulnerable to propaganda, anyone can join a cult) will take the disinformation as equivalent to the information, they will believe that there is some merit to argument. It takes magnitudes more effort to correct disinformation than it is to make it. That is a losing battle, it's not worth dying on that hill. People are very very very good at compartmentalizing. The old "2+2=3, but in engineering, it was still 4" will always ring true, and it never toppled a dictatorship. People have idols that would explicitly hate each other; pointing out fallacies doesn't change anyone's mind. In a perfect world, we'd all know about how to think critically and evaluate evidence, and we'd have a lovely little marketplace of ideas. The problem is we don't have perfect education, and we do have snake oil salesmen and merchants who don't play by the rules. We have people who argue in bad faith, people who do not care about facts, those who promote "alternative facts," and people who base their understanding of fact and opinion on arbitrary nonsense that cannot be logically refuted because it fundamentally isn't logical. There is no invisible hand that ensures that fact wins the war. Nor is there any metric to stabilize the "correct" opinion. When people have the tools to measure, they'll get to the right answer, but not if they don't have the tools. I'm always behind stopping the people who want to break those tools. The belief that all censorship is bad is shortsighted at best and an excuse to be cruel at worst.

Thanks so much for this video. As a feminist myself, I've been growing increasingly uncomfortable with the 'us vs them' stance that I've noticed other feminists taking recently. I think we really need there to be more discussions and debates between all sides, rather than just the insult-slinging that too many seem to be favouring at the moment
I used to be a feminist but then I saw that the current feminist movement is not about equality but is more about female supremacy. So now I label myself as an equalitarian.

One particularly useful approach is to identify when you make character attacks or personal insults, once you identify the action, the next step is to examine why you chose to insult someone based solely on their opinion. I've lost a lot of friends for having Laci's attitude toward having dialogue with disagreeing (and sometimes disagreeable) people. Left-leaning friends who agree with my political, religious, and economic opinions but who are angry with me because I'm engaging directly with people who disagree with us. That's how cults operate. The scientologists have a term called "suppressive" to describe a person who is critical of the cult, a person whom members (especially recent converts) should systematically IGNORE lest they be led astray or their argument be validated. Many modern political groupings are becoming very cultish in their protection of their comfortable echo chamber, and I've always felt that if you aren't having your views challenged, you're not growing as a person, nor are you actively combating the ideologies you disagree with.
That's one aspect of fascism, but not the whole package. Fascism also involves things like nationalism, ethnocentrism, aggressive military policy, a one-party state (or the desire for it), and omnipresent shows of governmental authority. Try not to be so hyperbolic.

Korrina Young This is the real human bond we have with each other. When ideas are censored, we are stagnant in progress and conflict is ongoing throughout history. Most of the major things that are popular in this technological era has been unknown or less popular ideas being adapted. That's probably because most people don't debate with the expectation that their own beliefs or opinions might change. They only do so to change the beliefs or opinions of the person they are debating.
In hindsight, it was unpleasant to see how people who were ostensibly on your side castigated you for simply having a conversation with the other side. It was like a high-level defection during the Cold War.

We can't sanitise everything to the extreme, it becomes a new form of fascism ironically: how can we justify what we consider to be right if we don't have a wrong to counterbalance it against, how can we progress and grow in our views, an ongoing and respectuf discussion is necessary in a democracy. It's not easy. I have had some really difficult times engaging with people with the opposite views to me. But it has been worth it. You have to deal with all sorts of emotions, even anger and disgust. And this was not only felt towards them but even myself at points. Neuroscientists have done studies looking at the brain activity of people when challenged about their ideologies. And the same part of the brain is engaged that also reacts to a personal attack. We are almost hard wired to be defensive even though it is just challenging an idea.
I understand, maybe I shouldn't have used the word extreme, but by extreme I inteded militant in the sense of being completely confident and convinced in our position. A strong position should be able to be questioned to further validate and evaluate its self. I don't believe that the truth is between two opposite opinions, that would be silly, I'm not inciting complete nihilism and absence of values, but where things get complicated it becomes dangerous when people don't constantly challenge themselves, when a group of people decides what is right for ever it becomes very dangerous, be that from any position... A constant open and respectful dialogue is needed, and again I might be wrong but hey the rabbit hole is infinite

Are all ideas worth discussing? At the risk of oversimplifying, No. No matter what you believe, I guarantee you that there is some solid line you will draw that you are not even slightly considering discussing. Is that a moral failing? An intellectual one?
Here's an easy pitch: no, it's not worth discussing whether or not the earth is flat. Why? Because there's nothing to discuss. It's not a matter of hegemony, it's that one "side" uses evidence, and the other just straight-up refuses to. You cannot win a "debate" with a flat earther. They, as a rule, do not believe anything you can give as evidence. You can personally take them up to see the curvature of the earth, and they will have decided halfway up that you've put them in a simulation. They can, of their own devising, test that at a certain distance, a beam of light will not reach the same spot based on the curvature, and they will come up with another reason why. If you give them an opportunity to speak beyond their echo chamber, all you are doing is allowing them to put *dis*information into an otherwise innoculated audience. Those who do not know any better (everyone is vulnerable to propaganda, anyone can join a cult) will take the disinformation as equivalent to the information, they will believe that there is some merit to argument.
It takes magnitudes more effort to correct disinformation than it is to make it. That is a losing battle, it's not worth dying on that hill.
People are very very very good at compartmentalizing. The old "2+2=3, but in engineering, it was still 4" will always ring true, and it never toppled a dictatorship. People have idols that would explicitly hate each other; pointing out fallacies doesn't change anyone's mind. In a perfect world, we'd all know about how to think critically and evaluate evidence, and we'd have a lovely little marketplace of ideas. The problem is we don't have perfect education, and we do have snake oil salesmen and merchants who don't play by the rules. We have people who argue in bad faith, people who do not care about facts, those who promote "alternative facts," and people who base their understanding of fact and opinion on arbitrary nonsense that cannot be logically refuted because it fundamentally isn't logical.
There is no invisible hand that ensures that fact wins the war. Nor is there any metric to stabilize the "correct" opinion. When people have the tools to measure, they'll get to the right answer, but not if they don't have the tools.
I'm always behind stopping the people who want to break those tools. The belief that all censorship is bad is shortsighted at best and an excuse to be cruel at worst.

I've lost a lot of friends for having Laci's attitude toward having dialogue with disagreeing (and sometimes disagreeable) people. Left-leaning friends who agree with my political, religious, and economic opinions but who are angry with me because I'm engaging directly with people who disagree with us.
That's how cults operate. The scientologists have a term called "suppressive" to describe a person who is critical of the cult, a person whom members (especially recent converts) should systematically IGNORE lest they be led astray or their argument be validated.
Many modern political groupings are becoming very cultish in their protection of their comfortable echo chamber, and I've always felt that if you aren't having your views challenged, you're not growing as a person, nor are you actively combating the ideologies you disagree with.
Another term for that is "fascism" btw. Suppressing those who disagree with you is actual fascism
