    Love hearing your thoughts on this. "The way I exist also has value" ooh yes. I have been resting bc of surgery the past two weeks and it's made me realise that being productive was what made me happy but resting and just watching some dang Netflix is also super important for joy sake.

    So glad I watched this. I’m a self-aware workaholic. 😅 I have to constantly remind myself I have a life outside of what I “do.” But I’m not able to remind myself enough. I need external reminders too, and I need them decently often. You were that for me today.
    Another video that helped me recently was CGP Grey’s video about themes (I think the title is “Your Theme”). This year I’m trying to live with the theme of CONSISTENCY. It’s been much more helpful for me to pursue consistency of the work I put in, rather than judge myself on the amount of product that comes out.

    • @AhsanteB
      @AhsanteB  4 года назад

      Yay! Glad this was a timely reminder :) And CONSISTENCY is a very good theme and is something that I still need to work on, which funnily enough links to our upcoming convo ;)

    It's why I don't feel guilty about the stuff I do now since it relaxes me big time. While still productive I don't obsess over it. Moderation is key

    When I was 17 I took a leadership course geared towards teenage girls. They made me pick 5 values that I wanted to center my life around. I don't have quite the same values as I did when I was 17, but it did help me figure out the kind of person that I wanted to be then and helped me become that person to an extent.

  • @FatoumataBinetouFall
    @FatoumataBinetouFall 3 года назад

    This was absolutely fantastic!! "what would be the center of your life?" Brilliant question! At first, I was like "people around me". Then you talked about values, and I was like "Oh boy! I have some reflections to do too"

    It meeeeee. I am an artist. It's the core of my identity and self worth and I am totally work obsessed and my expectations are way to high for myself and it drives all the joy out of my work. Why you gotta call me out like this?

      @@AhsanteB The more I think about this... I'm asexual too. I wonder if other asexuals have this same experience. It's surely not universal but aces might be more vulnerable to this method of self definition that those with sexual interest? Ace RUclipsr round table activate!

    I can't say anything coherent because my brain is steaming from work, but thank you so, so much for this video, it really makes me think and helps me feel better about myself for being unproductive. Especially since I'm chronically ill, disabled, and stuck with abusive family. So my work's bust, pretty much, because I'm in pain all the time, emotionally, physically, and mentally.
    But I've grown as a person a lot, especially the past year. So I want to focus on that, on growth, on kindness, both to myself and others. Let it be my value instead of like... my productivity. Thank you, Ahsante. I hope you have a good day.

    There's many ways to make an impact. That *can* be work (be it day job, or hobby), but it can also be non-work (or at least not in the traditional sense). Being a caring relative, or a friendly neighbour, or a good friend, or just being kind to the people you meet on the street. Everything makes an impact. And even if you don't make an impact at all, you're still valuable, because you're a human being.
    (I comment along while watching, good to see you got to that point as well lol)
    Great to see you come to the conclusion that your work doesn't dictate your value. So many people seem to think it does, cause as you say, that's what capitalism wants us to believe.

    Ooohhh this is just what I needed. I just got back from a very stress free semester in Hamburg to my home University of Ghent and have been feeling so. much. stress. due to the bachelor's thesis that I have to write here. I feel like whatever I write, it will never ever be good enough, the ideas will be stupid/irrelevant/etc. And that causes so much anxiety because then.... I, as a consequence, won't be good enough either. I've really been trying to deconstruct these thoughts in my brain and to be more chill about all of it. I'm new to this world, and they don't expect me to write a thesis that is ready to be printer in an academic journal. That's ok. It's gonna be okay. (She says while hoping she won't cry from stress the fourth week in a row)

    Personal experience: it can be very suffocating

  • @user-sf9gs2pg1b

    I need this right now.
    I have OCD, so many issues. I’ve been going insane over an AirPod pro case I bought, it had a smudge on it and I’ve been washing and disinfecting it for hours (it was clean in the first minute, I’m just going crazy). I can’t use it :(
    In regards to productivity, I’ve downloaded probably 20 (?) apps and went through all of them.
    I put my ideal routine, I put my class schedule, and stuff to remember in most, if not all, of those apps. I am about to go on aderall (however you spell it) and I hope that helps, because I think I have OCD and ADHD together.
    I’ve obsessed over healthy eating to the point where I was starving and using so much food without eating it. That was my old obsession, and this is my new one. I’ve memorized every due date, every class schedule, my daily routine, etc. from writing it down so often in each app. I think it’s funny because I use those apps to remember, and now I can’t forget, yet here I am downloading more and more apps to “remember.”
    I’ve spent at least 3-4 hours a day scheduling, and I never follow them. When I miss a tiny deadline (wake up late), the whole schedule falls apart for me.
    I’m lucky that I’m good at memorizing stuff on such a short notice. Surprised I didn’t fail my two exams I did not study for at all. I was so preoccupied with scheduling the time to study than actually studying.

    In b4 1mil subs.
    But really, I'm gonna rep your channel hard in 2020. 😉 Also your production value as-is is great, but I think adding lighting would make it 👌.
    I struggle with this too, but it's because I feel like I don't do enough (I procrastinate a lot) rather than because I'm being overworked/pushing myself too hard. It's not a logical thinking process... I feel like I'm not doing enough because "I know I could push myself harder" but even if I was working the whole day, no breaks, late into the night my response would be "Working long hours/late at night/with little sleep is inefficient, you could have done more if you had properly paced yourself." So I can never win. Add to that the fact that it doesn't matter what work I produce, I'm never 100% satisfied with it... ugh. There's just not a lot of motivation, because I'm never satisfied with the process or result.

    You like nuggets of wisdom. Have you read the book _The 4-Hour Workweek_ by Timothy Ferris? It's _abundant_ in nuggets of wisdom. I don't remember at which point this occurred, but it compelled me to take a good, hard look at my finances, and when I did that, I figured out that I had the means to completely pay off a debt I had been carrying around for years.
