    Plankton ruling the world is NOT out of character. He's been wanting to do it since the very beginning. In "F.U.N" he imagined himself taking over the city with that jellyfish

    I think I know why the Shell City scene was so heartbreaking. (WARNING MAJOR SPOILER) SpongeBob and Patrick are fairly innocent characters and for them to go on this long journey to find the royal crown and to not only fail but die in the process was just too much, but not only did they die but they went out feeling like they accomplished what they wanted to do, proving that even though they were kids they could still do something an adult could do. Also the fact that they went out together like best friends while singing that Goofy Goober song just added to it. That's what I got from it though.

    • @MagnaMike
      @MagnaMike 10 лет назад +12

      That's a good reasoning, but I got a different vibe from it. When the movie came out, the show had been out for about 6 years, and the characters had become memorable and loved. You knew their personality, and what differentiated them from the real world equivalents. But in that scene, as they dry, so did their personification and you realize what they really are, just a sponge and a starfish. Their child-like wonder and innocence was removed, and showed kids that what they adored are just common, everyday objects. (Except for Sea stars, unless you live on the coast like me.)

    I've noticed this and I'm not sure if anyone else noticed this but:
    In the first 2 episodes of the series, Patrick Acts like an authority figure for spongebob. In Help Wanted, Patrick helps motivate spongebob and help him get the job. In tea at the Treedome, Spomgebob asks about how he "met this girl" and Patrick basically gives him dating advice.
    Again, I may be on the wrong side of right, but that's what I think.

    • @kartoonfanatic
      @kartoonfanatic 7 лет назад +23

      A way to look at this is that while SpongeBob consistently seeks Patrick's advice through the series, the kind of attitude which which Patrick delivers the advice has shifted from brotherly to malicious. In none of the examples listed above was Patrick acting cocky or snide. He was being warm and comforting despite giving incorrect information to SpongeBob, and making the situation worse. Making him rude as well as incorrect is where his character starts to fall apart.

    I love this movie, and it was a nice and epic way to end the series, but I do see where you're coming from. It would have been nice for some of the other characters to get screen time, like Squidward or Sandy. Your idea about them forming a resistance was brilliant! Where were you in 2004 to suggest this to the writers!? The ending. . . I like it. It came out of nowhere, but it's Spongebob. You can get away with illogical things like that.
    I really love how dark this movie got at points. The dark backgrounds, the creepy abysses, the skulls, the monsters, the creepy ice cream lady tethered to that fish monster, and even the bar scene were very edgy (I hate using that word, but I don't feel like getting my thesaurus). It really pushed how much you can get away with in a children's animated film, even based off a cartoon. The only thing that really bothered me about the movie was King Neptune. It's not that he's different from the one in the series, it's that THIS King Neptune is an unlikable asshole. Yes, even his daughter calls him out on his shit, but there is nothing redeemable about him. Even Spongebob calls him out on his overreacting. "Isn't it a little harsh to kill someone over a crown?" I don't know, it would have been better if he had some arc that made him see the error of his ways by the end of the film. But that's just me. Nice review though! :)

    About Plankton's motive, in the original run, there were a few episodes that referenced Plankton wanting to rule the world including Snowball Effect and F.U.N. Granted, they were jokes, but still. It actually is a part of Plankton's character when you get down to it. They just tried to make him an awesome villain in the movie.

    Space is, of course, the final frontier, so it makes perfect sense that Sandy would see that as the ultimate opportunity to go on an adventure.

    I actually have my very own interpretation of Gary in Seasons 1-3.
    Gary is somewhat of a tricky character to make out. He's supposed to play the proper persona of a house cat, but he's much more deep that that. I like to call him the precursor to Perry the Platypus from Phineas & Ferb. First off, Gary's signature line is, "Meow," indicating that he's the house cat stereotype. However, in Opposite Day, he barks like a dog, a feat cats would never be able to accomplish. Gary's also not one-dimensional. In The Secret Box, he's shown to be sarcastic and arrogant by saying, "Eee... _no."_ when SpongeBob asks Gary if the plan is a good idea. Finally, Gary's true personality is shown when SpongeBob's hallucinatory clone enters his dream in Sleepy Time. It's shown that Gary is very poetic, preferring to read books made by authors such as Emily Dickinson. He also seems to keep his sarcastic personality with the quote of, "Did you think my shell was full of hot air?" Gary needs this apparent, but not abused, superiority complex to SpongeBob, otherwise he wouldn't be able to outsmart the sponge in episodes like Gary Takes A Bath. "Beware of your wandering eyes, you little poriferan!" Words to the wise, Gary.

    I think Dennis was a particularly good villain because he was darker and more menacing than the other types of foes Spongebob and Patrick have encountered in the past. He poses a very real threat that couldn't have been brought by someone like Man Ray (a larger than life superhero villain), or Flats (a school bully), or the Strangler (okay, he's an actual murderer... But his tolerance for Spongebob is so low, he'd rather suffer in prison than try and strangle him). Dennis's appearance marks the first instance of an obstacle that Spongebob and Patrick need to end up maturing a little to overcome. He's the type of guy who wouldn't be fazed by Spongebob and Patrick's antics, more willing to just get the job done.

    From what I've heard, Sandy being a scientist was in the pitch bible, and was always part of her character dynamic. In fact it actually predates the Karate and Fitness stuff.
    What seems to have happened is by the time the show was in development they had both ideas on the table(plus the idea of her being a potential love interest to Spongebob), and in S1 they experimented with a bit of everything. Tea at the Treedome mostly played it safe and did a little of all 3, Sandy's Rocket was about the scientist angle, Ripped Pants was about the love interest and fittness angle. Larry was originally seen as a bit of a rival in that dynamic though so the fittness stuff came through stronger, we got musclebob buffpants.
    By the end of S1 they mostly settled on the Fittness angle, as Hillenburg wasn't a huge fan of Spongebob being a romantic character(though he WAS open to testing it out, it's in the pitch bible as a 'potential option' and S1 has most of the shipping-esque scenes) and they had Plankton for the science stuff. Also they had Spongebob get into Karate too, which opened another dynamic for her(That was a later edition, his line in Tea at the Treedome was meant to just be awkward crush small talk, SB was not a figher in the pitch bible, see the stuffed animal weights)
    HOWEVER, by the time we get to S4, they've mostly used up a lot of the good Karate and fittness themed plots. There are a few later on(even S4 has Karate Island), but they really front loaded them. And Hillenburg made it very clear he decided against the Love interest thing so that's off the table. So they try the Scientist angle, bringing it back out of retirement in Chimps Ahoy and SquidBob Tentaclepants(both of which got solidly viewed as 'Ok').
    S5 temporarily eased back on that, only really referencing her scientist side in Spy Buddies in one scene, trying a few other things like going back to the Fittness angle in 'To Save a Squirrel', or taking advantage of her being a land creature in 'Flea in her Dome', but the latter two episodes flopped hard so from S6 onward they really lean hard into the scientist angle since it was working well, and honestly Sandy got off pretty easy in the flanderization department compared to most of the cast, with the two biggest complaints either being her becoming a borderline Mary Sue or getting a bit unethical at times.

    While I respect your opinion about the movie, I do think most of the complaints where very minor except for the guitar one. First of all, I feel like plankton going full villain was nick's best interest as they wanted to go big on the plot to make it fitting for the big screen and set the events of spongebob and Patricks adventure. Since this was also supposed to be spongebobs finale I think it was a good move. Next, ok, I really don't understand how there's an excessive amount of butt jokes. This isn't breadwinners. I found the jokes to be funny and the nut bar scene was great. Lol. But I think they wanted to focus on just spongebob and Patrick to not only emphasise their "kid situation" but also their teamwork and bond. And look, the whole adventure would need to change to accommodate more buddies. I can't explain, but there's just some charm to just having spongebob and Patrick be the ones on adventure. Also some other things: squidward getting back up like sandy before confronting plankton would actually cause a plot hole. As squidward is unaware of planktons mind control scheme. And back then, squidward was a bit arrogant and probably felt he didn't need anyone. And I think it wouldn't be in character for squidward to join spongebob in an adventure given that he's probably busy writing music and wouldn't want to be near him anyway. Sandy... Would make getting the crown a cake walk as she's a land animal and wouldn't catch the interest of a cyclops, even so, she couldn't be killed since she can survive land and stealthily take the crown. Your complaints are valid in that it could be more, but focusing on more characters could be difficult, especially how this movie is set up.

      Callinater Well, the issue there is that they’d need to rewrite the movie a bit. But they’re taking key characters to the series and just pushing them to the wayside, and I really do think that a bit of a rewrite would be a necessary evil.

    The reason I cry every time during that scene too is cause picture it like this: these two characters you know and love so much are dying, or at least they feel like they are going to die. And instead of fighting, struggling, or complaining, they sing. They sing a joyful little song that connects them as friends, that makes them happy. In the face of their own demise they smile and sing, and it's heart breaking to see two characters that pure of heart, especially if they are supposed to be dying. They spend their final moments making eachother just a little happier and you can tell it's taking a lot out of them and the fucking fade out of their laughter/singing is usually what breaks me. Don’t get me wrong. While the movie is good, I still feel like it was missing something for it to be a finale. You see a finale needs to be a lot of things, but one thing it needs for sure is CLOSURE. And closure for everyone. One of my issues with the movie is that while it gave room for some development for Spongebob, Patrick, and a bit for Mr Krabs, I was a bit disappointed that Squidward was a bit sidelined. And Sandy was literally sidelined totally, despite being one of the biggest supporting characters of the show. And sure so were Mrs Puff, Larry Lobster, Pearl, Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy, and even Spongebob’s parents (who weren’t even in the movie). So if I made one small change, it’ll be this: have Squidward join them on their quest. Now that’ll be something interesting, since throughout the series Squidward has held a big hatred for his two neighbors. And he’ll even move away just to avoid them. And sure, there were moments that he’ll stand up for Spongebob, but other than that, he wants nothing to do with him. So let’s have a moment like when Spongebob tells a frozen Mr Krabs not to worry for him, Patrick, and Squidward… but then Squidward says “pass/no way/not happening”. And then a frozen Krabs states, “Oh, no you don’t. Those two won’t survive on their own. They need a MAN-ager to guide them. Also, help or you’ll lose your bonus.”. And that convinces Squidward to join them. And during their quest, Squidward can quarrel with the two, but in dangerous situations, decides that they must work together. Now meanwhile, we have to have someone figure out what Plankton did to Mr Krabs and Neptune’s crown. So that role can be filled by Sandy. You see, I think the show never dove into the difference between Sandy and Plankton, since both have a love for science, bu my one of them wants to use science for good and the other for their own nefarious purposes. So maybe have Sandy question how The Chum Bucket is so successful now after what happened to Krabs. But Plankton manipulates Sandy due to their love for science and inventing that she decides to work for Plankton, giving him ideas on how to expand the business, leading to him giving out more “free helmets”. But Sandy somehow realizes after putting two-and-two together, that it was Plankton who framed Mr Krabs and so plans to report him to King Neptune. But Plankton activates the helmet brain control and turns everyone to slaves and captures Sandy. But luckily, because Sandy’s own suit is preventing the suit from controlling her brain (because I never understood that in the movie), she finds her way to sneak away and try to warn Neptune. But being more worried about his bald spot, Neptune doesn’t want to listen. But Mindy does, and quickly goes off to warn Spongebob, Patrick, and Squidward. Sandy in the meantime, has to find ways to free the people and luckily captures people like Mrs Puff, Larry, Mermaid and Barnacle Boy, Pearl, Gary, and maybe even Spongebob’s Parents, who are still under the helmets control. Sandy creates a blaster that will destroy the helmets and frees the people. Sandy convinces that they must work together in order to stop Plankton.
    In the meantime, Squidward is still unhappy being with Spongebob and Patrick, but maybe during their chase with the giant red monster, disguised as a ice cream parlor. Maybe Squidward saves Spongebob and Patrick, or vice versa showing Squidward’s change of heart. Movie continues as usual with the trench, meeting Dennis and captured by the Cyclops, and getting nearly killed until they find the crown, a heartfelt moment between the three and defeating the Cyclops, riding Hasselhoff, defeating Dennis, and heading back to the Krusty Krab to save Mr Krabs but Plankton reveals that he had the backup plan of making a helmet for Neptune and the mind control town comes in to attack, but Sandy and the gang arrive all geared up and ready to fight, only for them to be outnumbered and when all seems lost Spongebob has his Goofy Goober rock and roll moment and frees everyone. And Plankton is jailed, and Mr Krabs is released and so on and so forth. Maybe even throw a moment where Spongebob gives his thanks to everyone.
    The End
    And that’s the end of Spongebob.

      A movie with no video game adaptation doesn't mean it's bad. It doesn't need one to be good. Look at Deadpool. Look at Captain America Civil War. Look at Zootopia. They don't need a video game adaptation to be great. They're great because of how well structured the movies themselves were.

  • @Mackenzie_EV

    I think Seasons 6 -8 have really lost what the original show had because of flanderization. Spongebob is _only_ naive. Patrick is _only_ dumb. Squidward is _only_ annoyed by Spongebob. Sandy is _only_ "scientific". Plankton is _only_ a failure. Krabs is _only_ cheap. I haven't seen much of Season 9, but episodes like _Squid Baby_ really show Spongebob and Patrick at their worst: dumb and dumber. But episodes like _Safe Deposit Krabs_ show that they can use these characters's traits to create a good episode.
    Overall, the later seasons have forgotten what made the original seasons (1-3) good: three-dimensional characters and correct usage of these characters' multiple traits instead of just using one. Remember: *personality is not a joke* either.

    Great speech and what you said is true also how you and the people on spongemaina got the personality's right that's how I personally saw spongebob and his friends. I been with spongebob since the beginning so after the movie and during season 4 I have notice the change in the show and personally it never bother me season 4 to me was a good season but I had always notice the change but I have notice that in season 5 onward when I started to hate spongebob and his friends in my opinion they have been turn in to jerks like the episode one coarse meal where mr krabs drives plankton to try and commit suicide or how about squidward in little yellow book where he reads spongebob's dairy or how about patrick in stuck in the wringer where he glues spongebob in his wringer and let's not forget Mrs.Puff in demolition doofus where she trying to kill spongebob and spongebob been turned into a creepy stalker in squid's visit all these character's that I loved from 6yrs old to now 20 with the exception gary, sandy, and plankton are the only likable characters in the whole show everyone else is either an idiot or an asshole also there's too much gross out humor or no humor at all in addition the specials are not ever specials the stories in them are either boring or stupid the biggest example is spongebob your fired I won't spoil anything other than it's stupid (I suggest looking at themysteriousmrenter review on the episode). But through all the crap there is 1 episode that I really like and that is sand castles in the sand. Which is a good episode I really want spongebob to get better or at least end on a good note I mean if it wasn't for that 1 episode plus season 1-4 and the movie I have on dvd I would completely cut cord on spongebob

    The Spongebob movie is brilliant, esp. as a work of Gnosticism.
    Gnosticism is rejection of logic and thrust into a spiritual experience.
    Spongebob must leave his logical world behind, and he is at the thrust of Neptune, who, let's face it, is a deity on this universe. Through his quest, he meets great monsters and experiences a spiritual upheaval, both literally and figuratively, in Shell City.
    The quest is completed by Spongebob dying and rising again, not unlike a certain other Gnostic figure. He returns a much wiser and changed sponge from his quest through the spiritual world. You could interpret the guitar from hammerspace as the culmination of his Gnostic upbringing and utilizing it in its truest form.
    The Spongebob Movie is one of the defining Gnostic works of our time. Even if it disrespects the show and has flaws, this message is one for everyone!

    As for Mr. Krabs, I can see what you mean; but I prefer to think of him as someone who's kind in his own right, but has moments of weakness. See, Mr. Krabs like Spongebob both for his money making and the fact that he's so positive keeps customers around. Sure that easily can be interpreted as greedy, but I think of it as Mr. krabs trying to become a more positive person while keeping his cheap ways. The reason that the Krusty Krab's a wreck without Spongebob is because without him, there's no really uplifting thing that keeps customers in. Both like and unlike his modern counterpart, he has a big money addiction, but at least keeps it to a reasonable degree (mostly).

    Funny how you mentioned the guitar deus ex machina. In the PC version of the Spongebob movie, there is a guy who actually had a guitar, and he tells you to go over to the Chum Bucket to complete a side mission. By the time you get back, he was already captured by Plankton and is seen wearing a mind control helmet. Spongebob then takes the guitar for himself, and the pacing for the rest of the ending is very akin to the movie. Spongebob uses the guy's guitar to fight back and succeeds. Also it was a Goofy Goober branded guitar, much like the one in the movie.

    I understand. I actually like a couple Season 4 episodes. I may be a little bias. But I have been a long time used to be Spongeob fan. And I can tell you it's not all bad.(in terms of 4-onwards) There's some diamonds in the rough.I actually like the episode Skill Crane because Squidward actually won when he kept playing that machine and plus when he started to act arrogant he actually got punished for his actions and he deserved it. I also like that Mr. Krabs also got his punishment too for manipulating Squidward to the point of selling his deed to his house. Yeah it's episodes like this that actually makes me understand why Squidward getting tortured in the newer episode fails. Because Squidward doesn't get a break and win. Unlike this episode where he won and I felt happy for Squidward winning. And I also remember like Dunces and Dragons that was a good special and it was epic but still funny for getting the parody right.(unlike Pest of West where it was a cash in to Dunces and Dragons and it was terrible). So yeah Pieguyrulz. I'm glad you don't let your bias ruin the newer episodes. Because I can tell you that a lot of Season 4 I would call good (some even going toe to toe with the original 3 seasons in terms of quality). So yeah I don't know for Season 5 but I think I enjoyed a couple episodes from that season. I would say seasons 6-8 are most likely Scum bobs. and Season 9.... I only seen half of it before I gave up on Spongebob ever being good again. But yeah maybe there will be something good in season 7 and 8. Or for the most part it will be terrible throughout the entire run of those seaons.

    For me the randomness and inexplicable nature of Goofy Goober Rock made it super funny. It (alongside David Hasselhoff) feels more like an intended parody of the Deus Ex Machines trope than actually using the trope as a crutch.

    Speaking as someone who doesn’t care for modern SpongeBob, I’ve never understood the distain towards Sandy’s scientific capabilities. She’s a Texas squirrel that developed a method for land creatures to live at the bottom of the sea, is it really a shock that her mind doesn’t stop at karate and hibernation?

    • @camdencoblentz3245
      @camdencoblentz3245 6 лет назад +2

      The thing was that there wasn't much build up to Sandy becoming obsessed with science before season 4, with the exception of Sandy's Rocket, but still, that was only one episode. I don't have a huge problem with her becoming a scientist, but the shift to it was way too jarring and sudden.

    A lot of people call Mr. Krabs a father figure to Spongebob. But personally, even if we are only talking about the first 3 seasons, I never got that vibe. I never saw Krabs and Spongebob as having a father-son dynamic, maybe partially because Sponegbob’s actual parents are a part of the show (albeit a very small one). I always saw Mr. Krabs's role in Spongebob’s life as sort of a subversion of the typical mentor figure. Mr. Krabs is an older male, a self-made man who has been through a lot and shaped by hard experience (his time in the navy, him working his way up in the fast-food industry, etc.) and seems to have a lot of wisdom and often acts as a mentor to the naïve and youthful Spongebob, giving him advice and guidance through life. But, his advice more often than not tends to be not the best, if not straight-up bad advice, either because Mr. Krabs isn’t as smart as he thinks he is or because he doesn’t actually prioritize helping Spongebob as much as helping himself, because Krabs isn’t the humble, virtuous Obi-Wan Kenobi type, but rather an underwater Scrooge McDuck, specifically the hardened, miserly, tightwad one from Don Rosa’s comics, who tended to give Donald, Hey, Dewey and Louie a hard time, and who you would think would act as a father figure to them but is really just their cankerous employer with a hidden heart. Krabs is a lot like that, but middle class and relying less on his wit and more on shrewd and sleazy “Honest John” business tactics to rake in more profit. And on Spongebob’s side, he idolizes Krabs immensely, as Krabs is the founder of the Krusty Krab and Spongebob loves the Krusty Krab, but like with Kevin, the person Spongebob idolizes isn’t actually that idealized hero Spongebob imagines him as, he is rather shifty but not without a conscience. But since this is Spongebob, he only sees the positive and overflows Krabs’s positive qualities (just like with Squidward).
    This is just a long-winded way of me saying that I view Mr. Krabs as Spongebob’s penny-pinching boss with a hidden heart and his less-than-stellar mentor figure and idol.

    I don't understand; why is it that people hate Spongehenge?
    It's not great, but it's one episode that I'll watch; it's one of the episodes that doesn't have any of modern Spongebob's sins.
    And it has what you yourself said, and what I agree with; Spongebob episodes are their funniest when the characters go crazy. Watching Spongebob interact with the first Stone Copy he made of himself, was just so entertaining.

    I haven't watched Spongebob since a little after season 3, and I've had a grudge against Nickelodeon ever since they (in my opinion) ruined the show, as well as The Fairly Odd Parents. I grew up with those two shows, and it really did hurt to see them decline so much, so quickly. It didn't help that the other Nicktoons I grew up with were also being cancelled at the time (Danny Phantom, Jimmy Neutron), but that at least is somewhat understandable. Shows end, and it's sad, but it will happen.
    In my mind, there's no excuse for the horrible writing quality of the new Spongebob. The show now relies almost completely on weird, random, and gross-out humor, the characters are dumber, more annoying and flanderized to hell, Spongebob's voice is pitched higher, the animation is different, the show is less witty altogether. I find it baffling that ANYONE would still watch it, but hey, I haven't seen it in years. Maybe it has gotten better. Maybe I'm missing something. Maybe I just hate it because it's different. I don't know. I'm most definitely in the "hate new Spongebob" camp, but after all this time, I am willing to be open minded about the show again. I'm willing to give it another chance. If you do find an episode you think is worth watching, I'll check it out.
    But even if it HAS gotten better, I'm certain it still won't compare to classic Spongebob. At least not in my mind.

    The reason why this didn't become the series official finale and had more seasons is because Nickelodeon couldn't come up with any good ideas, so they brought new writers, new storymen, new animators, new everything who turned the show into the crappy unfunny(sometimes is funny) revived show we know today.

    Another big part of Spongebob character that you and the others sort of missed is Spongebob's loyalty. Spongebob is extremely loyal. He's loyal to Mr. Krabs and the restaurant. He even helps him date Mrs. puff and takes Pearl to her prom. He shows loyalty to Squidward in many episodes including band geeks where he gets to the town to get together for Squidward. He tries to help sandy with her rocket and feels bad when he treated her poorly in squirrel jokes. He loves his best friend Patrick and tries to help him a lot especially I'm with stupid where he pretends to be stupid to make Patrick look good and the episode where he helps him work at the Krusty Krab. He's even loyal to plankton sometimes defending him when Mr krabs goes to far or in episodes when they're friends. I think he sees good in plankton.

But what it was hilarious to see the look on my parents face when they saw the commercial because they knew they were gonna have to take us. It was priceless! As for the characters I had a teacher that was a lot like Mrs. Puff, only she's got a LOT more Spongebob's to deal with. (AKA the High School Freshmen class.) Boy was I lucky to be one of the few students she liked. :)

    Kind of irrelevant, but what you said about Plankton in the movie is very similar to how I felt about Bowser in Super Mario Galaxy. I know Mario characters don't have that much personality in game, but Bowser was never after World domination and to rule the galaxies, he just wanted to take over the Mushroom Kingdom. The Mario RPG's treated his character much better.
