Actually, Burger Beard's backstory is given in a deleted scene. He actually always wanted to be a fry cook, but his Father forced him to be a pirate. That's why he needed the formula, since he never learned how to cook before.

I seen this movie, and it was surprisingly good. It seems that ever since Stephen Hillensberg came back to produce the show, it's gotten much better these days, and while there are still some weak episode of this season, it's still outweighed by the good episodes, and at least the characters have finally gotten de-flanderized. One of the few cartoons that experienced seasonal rot and was finally able to get back on its feet.

3:27 That actually wouldn't be the first time Plankton tried something like that. He tried something similar in Plankton's Army where he hid inside a fake dollar. That plan only failed because he revealed himself too early, and in his own words, "Never thought I'd get this far."

Of course, it could also be referring to "SpongeBob, You're Fired," as there was a Mexican food restaurant in that excuse for an episode.

I love both Spongebob movies, but I certainly prefer the first one. The first one's story was one of self-finding and going over a character arc that could be argued goes back to the very beginning of the series: The childish nature of Spongebob's character. At first he attempts to deny it and even feels ashamed of it, but through his journey with Patrick, he realizes that said childish nature is who he truly is, and learns to embrace it while also learning that just because he's childish, doesn't mean he can't also be responsable, mature and get the job done. Patrick sort of also has one, but it doesn't really conclude in any way, besides the same conclusion Spongebob reaches at the end, just not mentioning it. It's a fantastic animated film that makes me not only laugh but also really enjoy the character arcs.
Sponge Out of Water is also a fantastic movie, but I feel that certain parts kind of drag the movie down enough for me to prefer the first movie, like the mentioned time machine issues in your review. Still, the interactions between Spongebob and Plankton as well as seeing Bikini Bottom in a different, Mad Max-esque light are phenomenal, specially since these scenarios are mostly new for the characters. The villain is a bit weak, I agree, and the Superheroes do come out of nowhere (in fact, when I saw the "The Spongers" promotional poster, I feared that the movie would be seasons 6-8 quality of awful) but the action sequences and overall funny tone of the movie makes it easy to overlook said issues.

I think that the Burgerbeard plotline underwent a massive rewrite during production, to the point that it just barely resembles what it was originally intended to be.
If you look back at the early trailers the plot was going to be; Burgerbeard steals the secret formula because it was written on the last page of his magical book, and in order to make the books magic work he needs to restore the page to the book. I would've preferred if movie used this storyline instead

Having also poured my soul into making a looong video review of this movie, I watched it a ton of times. And I think we see eye to eye on a lot of its pros and cons, with some exceptions. For example, I actually enjoyed the surreal nature of tangents like the Bubbles the Dolphin scene and Plankton in SpongeBob's brain (the rainbow Plankton vomits referring to him as his father is lovely). I think they definitely go further with the strangeness than the original seasons often did, but in a way that makes a 15+year old franchise feel surprising and fresh. They were definitely tangents, but in a charming, SpongeBob-esque way.
It was the live action scenes that I felt were often more starkly disconnected and pointless than anything else in the film, not because of the animation medium change, but due to the departure from the SpongeBob and Plankton storyline. Why throughout the majority of Act 3 is Plankton, who they've built up as one of the film's two leads, placed in SpongeBob's sock, and given brief moments to pointlessly mislead you into thinking he's an antagonist again? Not only would I'd much rather have seen Plankton having to work with the other characters THROUGHOUT Act 3, I think that's just the way the story was going, especially given the narrative of teamwork. And it'd be extremely new and satisfying to see Plankton working not just alongside SpongeBob, but the rest of the principal cast.
But on the whole, I really agree with you that the movie is good. It has lots of funny moments, the 2D animation is gorgeous, the stakes are engagingly high, the difference in ideology between SpongeBob and Plankton makes for a great dynamic, and perhaps best of all, the characters feel like themselves again, which just adds this enriching sense of authenticity to the proceedings. I personally prefer the first film since it really explores the character of SpongeBob and his placement between childhood and adulthood in a very interesting, adventurous, funny, and large-scale way. I think the original film was more focused on emotion whereas this one is more about entertaining the viewer on a moment-to-moment basis, which also absolutely has its merit. So I'm glad both exist, and geez, I don't know about you, but I'm BEYOND curious to see where they go with the third one.

  • @RidleyKraid187
    @RidleyKraid187 7 лет назад +4

The best way I can describe the difference between this and the first one? The SpongeBob Movie was a movie. Sponge out of Water was a really long SpongeBob episode.
Sure, the SpongeBob Movie was really cinematic and somewhat epic, but it was lacking in comedy in a lot of places, and felt needlessly darker and grimmer than it needed to be: Characters are swearing (even if it's only once or twice), SpongeBob and Patrick die, Mr. Krabs is threatened with death, Neptune is constantly threatening to kill people, there's a lot of scenes that take place in visually dark settings, and Plankton goes from being a comedic villain trying to steal the formula to an evil dictator trying to take over the world using mind control and whatnot. In the series proper, all Plankton wants is to be more successful than Mr. Krabs. He's not trying to take over the world, and while he does talk about domination, he never actively pursues anything more evil than petty theft most of the time.
And honestly, could you picture Dennis showing up in a normal SpongeBob episode? He's not a comedic murderer like the Strangler; he's taken very, very seriously.
Sponge out of Water has a MUCH lighter tone. Yes, there's the apocalypse, but the lead-in to that plot point was more of a joke than anything actually serious, and nothing actually happening in the apocalypse (aside from trying to sacrifice SpongeBob and holding Karen hostage) was taken very seriously. Not all of the jokes in the movie stick, no, but it at least feels like they're trying to go for a comedic approach to this movie, wheras the first one, it feels like they're trying to go for a serious story, which may work well for other shows, but for a comedic show like SpongeBob, it's best to go for a lighter tone and a more comedic story than something grand and epic.

My feelings were mixed. On one hand it was a really fun movie with many great gags and characters that I have become invested in for many year, yet on the other hand it doesn't follow a single - straight forward - story-arc. It jumps from the secret formula disappearing and the post apocalyptic theme, to a spongebob and plankton buddy-comedy, to a weird superhero fight at the end. Oddly enough, my favourite part of the whole film was the time travel sequences. The "Squeeze Me" song is catchy as the animation was visually pleasing.
I just feel, had they stuck to one element of the story and developed it a little further, this could have been a fantastic movie.
However, it's been interesting hearing your constructive criticism and saying that you enjoyed this film more so than the first. You're the first critic I've come across to say this but it's refreshing. You stray away from the obvious arguments and give a new idea on something. I really enjoy watching your spongebob, and general, reviews because of your critical and nostalgic balance. It has helped me to shape the way I critique things.

To be honest, I disagree. I thought this movie was just "okay", but definitely on the upper side of okay.
The movie kind of felt like a rough draft and needed to be developed a lot more. There's a lot of things that are unexplained and random (the book, the super heroes, etc.) and felt like they need a lot more explanation/foreshadowing.
This movie has good concepts, but the execution was fairly flawed.
Again, it's not a bad movie. I think it's just alright. But I can see why a lot of people would like it.

At least the entire way they resolved the problem wasn't unexplained -_- I'm sure if you think about the plot too much you can say "hey this doesn't make sense!" but this isn't the movie that needs a tightly woven script. The fact that it was able to use most of the characters, had more original and funny jokes and original jokes(instead of haha their naked) , as well as have you know a proper ending instead of the entirely random song that saved the day for no apparent reason. Makes it a better *SPONGEBOB* film than the first (imo) (you could say that I'm worrying too much about the ending but ....its the ending... when the ending makes no sense you feel like you've been cheated of the entire film)

Avis Reviews The reason why this movie is more random than the previous film is because, unlike the first one that was more like an adaption of the TV show, this one is more so a surrealistic comedy that is it's own thing.

+NEW VIDS IN NEXT 1-2 MONTHS. I think you're worrying about the first movie too much in general instead of just the ending
No matter how much you don't like the first movie, how does that make up for the second movie? The second movie is it's own thing, and just because another movie is worse in your opinion shouldn't sway your opinion.
I mean, if we were going by that logic, that means almost every single movie is good just because Foodfight is bad.

I would actually say this is a better adaption of the tv show than the first with this feeling more like an extended spongebob episode while the first felt more "serious" and "edgy" and more beat for beat a regular normal movie... unlike the show...

It's been a while since I've seen this film, but I definitely remember enjoying it, in spite its flaws. Though I personally found the first film a little better, mainly because the story was more cohesive. That one also felt like an actual movie, whereas "Sponge Out of Water" kind of felt more like three random episodes that somehow got strung together. But again, it was still fun and even felt like a taste of older Nickelodeon, especially with that song from the time travel scene.
Your critiques for this movie were also really good, especially on improving Burger Beard's character and tying in the superhero stuff.

Gotta admit, kinda surprised you liked this one more than the first one as when I watched this movie, I felt the opposite. The Original SB Movie is a much stronger piece story and character wise while the sequel...prequel...the 2nd movie had it's moments but fell flat with some important elements i.e. the Villain and had a lot of scenes that just felt random and out of place. Different strokes I guess.

I think both the first and second Spongebob movie have their fair share of advantages and disadvantages toward one and other.
The first movie feels more cinematic, has way better music, has a plot that challenges the status-quoe more, and of course has much stronger drama.
The second movie has better action, better animation, better effects, a more consistently humorous tone (not that the first film doesn't have anything funny though), and utilizes the Spongebob cast a lot better.
Regardless of which one people think is better, we can all agree they are both better then Songe On The Run.

I love this movie but i always sort of lose interest when they leave the ocean.
My favourite thing of this movie is all the interactions of Spongebob and Plankton and the amount of character development from the two of them, with also the fact that Plankton is a great straightman for Spongebob's comedy.
Sadly, that was simply gone when they got in the human world and all the characters that now became important to the movie were just there and nothing compared to Plankton.
Also, the 2D animation was really really good and that magic got lost when things got 3D, becoming more of an stereotype of what a Spongebob movie would be.
I still love it but i wish things had never left Bikini Bottom, the stakes were high enough already.

The second film had moments that could've been handled better or elaborated on, and it felt a little disjointed/random at times.
Basically it's like picking your favorite fruit (mine's pineapple :P) which movie you prefer! At least both had funny moments.
We have the one that's like a single ep. plot stretched into a film and the other that has 3 very distinct acts. I find it interesting.

Honestly iʻve been thinking the same thing for over 12 years. The show was originally going to be ended by the creator after the first movie because he was leaving it for some apparent reason that i donʻt remember but the sponge had risen to success and Nickelodeon starting bleeding the show out to become a cash cow. Popularity keeps the show alive and i do realize that many people want the show to die but honestly iʻm neutral. Yes, the obvious drop in quality made me lose a bit of respect for the show after the creator left but as of now its kinda the only positive show currently on Nick. There was Harvey Beaks but they screwed that up and i know pretty much everyone loves Loud House except me. When the sponge dies, so does Nick well at least thats what i think because they really donʻt have enough support to hold them up. Then again thats me sorry if i wasted your time with this comment but this show has always had a special place in my heart and no other long running can top it with the exception of South Park

Mermaid and Barnacle Boy mag have actually been the only secondary/tertiary characters not in the movie. I think even characters like Larry were in the background of the apocalypse. I think a really good way of implementing them would have been to have spongebob and Patrick transform into superheroes with their MM and BB suits. And whether they were to do that or not, they could've had a scene where Patrick messed up something small in the fight and spongebob would go to support him. Spongebob would say something along the lines of "Think of what Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy would do..." and after like a 20 second or so speech, Patrick would feel motivated to get up and fight. And they could even make him be a big contributing factor to them winning the fight.
All of this would have made the reference to MM and BB, made Patrick back into an awesome and lovable character, and made a nice, short motivational, emotional speech that could've been full of reference to old classic episodes.
Just my opinion though. Reply with what you guys think of the idea!
P.S. I feel I might be the only person who noticed this on my first time watching, because I never hear anyone else mention this, including Pieguy. Anyway, one of the times they show Burgerbeards patty truck(I think it's the first time), if you look at the lineup for the half a second that its shown, you can actually see the ERB guys in line. So that ending was actually somewhat foreshadowed!

It also gives us a far more interesting storyline about the main characters traveling out of water than Pressure and Rodeo Daze.

As a huge Spongebob fan I thought this movie was fine, most of the humor was fairly chuckle worthy but I could tell that it lacked the edge that made the first 3 seasons and the first movie so good, although Stephen Hillenberg was involved with this movie the writing felt a lot more……juvenile than before, this felt more like something strictly made for kids as opposed to kids and adults like before, which is also something I noticed with the episodes that came after this movie, this movie wasn’t quite the return to Spongebob’s glory days like I hoped it would be but it’s a fine enough edition to the franchise and it is still better than post first movie Spongebob

I mostly agree with everything you've said here. But there's one thing I have to disagree on. The first movie is a lot better in my opinion. The primary, and most important, reason is the comedy. The first movie is simply a riot from start to finish. Everything comes together perfectly in that department its an absolute blast to watch. This movie, while still really funny overall, really has shaky parts, and some things that are flat out cringe-worthy (the dolphin, seagulls, etc.). I felt that there was none of that in the first movie. Another reason is the story. While neither are terribly complex or anything, I feel like the plot holes in this movie are far too massive to overlook. I see where you're coming from and definitely respect your opinion, but I personally found much more enjoyment in the first movie.

He comes back and it's like "I know we destroyed the city, blamed you for everything, almost killed you, and that you just saved the town, but instead of saying sorry, could you make us thousands of Krabby Patties?" It's just something that gets under on my nerves, and honestly I would not forgive them for everything that they did if that was me.

I do like this film, but I could never think it's superior to the original. That film just has TOO many childhood defining moments for me to not consider it a favorite.
I would chalk that up to just nostalgia but upon rewatch, The Spongebob Squarepants Movie simply has more memorable moments and I think it's going to hold up better in the years to come as a comedy. This film doesn't have its David Hasselhoff moment, or the "Tear of the Goofy Goober!" moment, or that hilarious "Now that We're Men" sequence. Or the Bubble Blowing Baby line. Or the finale. It's just has more iconic and creative moments whereas Sponge Out of Water is funny but by and large not as quotable or memorable as the first.

Honestly they should’ve made this the series finale. I haven’t seen it but based on the way you describe it it sounds alot like a series finale. Wouldn't have that been better? Plankton learns the value of friendship and gives up his evil ways. Hell, he could even decide to move away from the Bikini Bottom and try to find himself since he wasted his whole life being angry and spiteful of someone who was his best friend. Karen could be shut down permanently and he could try to find a new wife, Squidward gets to live his life in his dream body, Spongebob stays at the Krusty Krab as the new manager, and Mr. Krabs gets to keep his formula and even have a heartfelt mom with Plankton leaving and forgive him for trying to steal from him after all those years. There could’ve even been an end credits scene with Burger Beard and Patchy meeting with each other. Everyone could've gotten their own happy ending and the series could’ve ended in a satisfying way. But as MysteriousMrEnter put it, “the status quo is God.” Now that Stephen Hillenburg came back it’s obvious that the series won’t be ending anytime soon, and that worries me. It’s good that Spongebob is getting better, but I want Nickelodeon to move on a focus on their other amazing cartoons. Legends of Korra was treated so poorly because it wasn’t an instant hit and didn’t draw in the amount of money that Spongebob did, so Nickelodeon ignored it. Same thing with Harvey Beaks and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It’s good that Loud House is gaining popularity and Nickelodeon is paying attention to it, but until they let Spongebob die with dignity those shows will never get the care and attention that they deserve. I know it’s hard to hear that Spongebob should get cancelled, but if you don’t let good shows die with dignity like Hey Arnold and Gravity Falls then it’s gonna end up like Family Guy and the Simpsons where they become zombies of themselves just idly telling the same jokes said a million times and never movie forward.
