    Fantastic rebuild, and what a piece of machinery! The engine reminds me of the 5 hp Briggs we had on the back of our AMF riding mower in the late 60’s early 70’s. It ran for years until one day Dad forgot to check the oil, ran it dry and it seized up. I took the engine off and rebuilt it for him, it ran for another dozen or so years before we gave the mower away. You could buy all of those parts at the local mower shop back then!

    Nice video! About 10 years ago my father brought me a Tecumseh LAV35 from our neighbor. I spent a lot of afternoons to restore it after school. I did almost everything you do in the video. Unfortunately the piston-ring replacement was not enought to avoid oil consume of the engine. After 4 years of using it the 45 years old lawn mower has been retired. Now it is a "statue" in my workshop. A lot of memories.

    Growing up around old school hot rod guys, I learned a bunch if stuff so I figured I could pass it along to anyone who wants it. At about 18 minutes in he used that permatex assembly lube, which is good for bearing and seal surfaces, but at 19:30 he coated the cylinder wall with it which is wrong. Engine oil or assembly lube will make it harder for the rings to seat, I was told to use wd-40 or something equivalent. Also always coat both surfaces when putting bearing surfaces together (ex. Coat the pin bore in the piston and wrist pin its self not just one or the other) or it will leave some dry spots on the surface. Greatly enjoy the videos man and I also understand that engine building is a talent and most of us have different talents.

    I wonder why he didn't hone the cylinder. I believe that is always recommended when installing new rings as it allows them to seat in well.

    • @erikj.2066
      @erikj.2066 3 года назад +5

      It's an aluminum bore engine. Depending on the type of rings he used, it's usually wasn't advisable to hone an aluminum bore as the hone will leave grit behind imbedded in the cylinder walls, which is difficult to remove.
      EDIT: Watched further into the video, and appears the NOS rings he used were plated, just like the piston should be. You don't hone for those.

    • @jamesg9385
      @jamesg9385 3 года назад +8

      A very light cross hatch with a fine stone should have been used to help remove an scores down the length of the bore. a second clean would have had to be done, but the rings stiil need a surface to mate to. it's the only part of the video that I questioned.
      Extra care would have had to be taken due to the aluminium block, but done nonetheless.

    • @scdevon
      @scdevon 3 года назад +3

      You aren't supposed to hone a "Kool Bore" aluminum bore. Your bore is either OK or it isn't.

I think he's been doing this for 40 couple years working on small engines. And that's not all he does he works on tractors mini bikes etc. If you can get past his goofiness like I did he is very very entertaining and very informational. Nice rebuild, there are a couple of things I did differently when rebuilding my 3.5 horsepower Briggs and Stratton lawnmower engine :-
    - I gave the Kool Bore cylinder a light hone & fitted aftermarket Stens steel piston rings
    - I checked the valve lash after lapping the valves in,the valve stems needed grinding down
    - I reoil the air filter as it says on your filter housing,I wash it out with soapy water,let it dry out then saturate it with engine oil then I totally wring it out then refit it into the air filter housing !

    • @alasdair4161
      @alasdair4161 3 года назад

      Agree on all points, I was thinking the chuffing was likely due to the valves riding the cam (no clearance)

    • @jackthackray7757
      @jackthackray7757 3 года назад

      @@alasdair4161 could you elaborate on what you mean by chuffing ? I have a Briggs engine which occasionally "pops" (not a backfire) and was wondering if it was valve lash as you said

    • @alasdair4161
      @alasdair4161 3 года назад

      @@jackthackray7757 Yes, it's not really a backfire, with small engines it sounds more like a random miss, but with car engines, listening at the exhaust it sounds more like an irregular chuffing sound, indicating either burnt valves or insufficient valve clearance causing poor sealing, most often around the exhaust valve/s.
      It's also worth keeping in mind, these old engines were designed for leaded fuel, so many end up with valve seat recession and poor sealing from being run with unleaded fuel. You can get lead substitute to prevent it, or go the full hog and have hard seats fitted... but that would be expensive.
      Cheers.

    Wow ! This is a true tlc restoration! New rings, new conrod, new sump! When you took the head off it was so clean. Sludge in sump appears to be lead from the leaded fuel days. This engine was already built to handle unleaded fuel with such good valves. Only thing viewers would probably miss is a compression test before and after.

    Good job I never had the ring compressor , always used a big hose clamp . Good job on the restoration , anymore those major jobs have turned in a disposable mowers because of the labor cost . I restored a. Old 3 1/2 Briggs push mower one time and put chrome rings in , sold it for it was 25 years old ( it was still running good when I sold it ) and bought a new one . But the old stuff was easy to work on - thanks for the reminiscing session .

      Same here. I looked them up and although they're more expensive I plan on buying one or so. Should be very handy since I' always working on stuff of this nature.

    suggestion for Crank. Chuck Crank into a Drill Press and set to its slowest speed, oil Emery cloth, (800 grit of finer), wrap oiled emery cloth around areas to be honed and hone until surface is clean. this evenly hones the surface and you take less chance of over sanding one area.

    i know a guy who builds rally cross engines and he used an old dish washer to clean parts and cases using degreasing fluid instead of water and recycled the fluid into a 40 gallon drum, the heater in the washer was handy because in the case of engine cases being hot made removing and inserting bearings and collars was easy to the heat expanding the holes in the cases

    I don't see how this motor could be any MORE sophisticated in terms of simplicity and reliability. A wonderful rebuild as well. My only question is why you didn't oil the valve springs before opening them? Would it not get the collapsors out with less resistance and help the coils seat without any undue friction?

    You should teach a small engines course. Or at least produce a step and step course with all the tips and tricks and exact measurements (torque) on the engine. I would pay for a hands on course just like this. You did a great job!

    It totally amazes me that when people buy a lawn mower they never give it any thought that the oil has to be changed. This engine is a perfect example of what I am talking about.

    This video demonstrates to me, among other things, how time marches on. I remember many a times working on these motors, back to 55 years ago when my dad showed me how to tear one down and what to look for. I saw the title of this video and thought, "Rare"? But that's the passage of time, for ya'.

    Nice JOB , Only Thing I Would Have Done Is Paint The Engine Casing To Match The Sump. I Like The Blue Color On The Rest Of It, Really Sets It Off Nicely. Over All Good Video

    I've been working on small engines for 54 years and would take all the steps that he has done except the painting unless the customer wanted that. I like the look of an aged but well-running engine, I also do a cylinder honing.
