    Wow, your color choices and pencil strokes and how you've captured the light, just everyhing about this is so so beautiful. I love your unique almost painterly style even with colored pencils!

    Coloured pencils are my "weapon" of choice, I usually create portraits with them. I have always wanted to be able to sketch like this, and I've also always wanted to see you try something like this, so this video really made me happy ^^. I have been a subscriber for a long time, you truly master watercolours, but seeing this makes me wish you'd do more with these pencils in the future!

      I will probably, because I like the process a lot! I think it's also great to use outdoors so when the corona calms down maybe I can go and do some sketching with color pencils too. 👍

    Your artwork is beyond beautiful, I love being a part of your journey as an artist. I really enjoy your most recent pieces, they have a lot more life to them and seem to have a story behind them. Keep up your good work!! Also, I know that you are a fan of Miyazaki’s work, do you also have any Polish artists as inspirations? Such as Janusz Stanny or Maria Uszacka (old illustrators, I know, but I feel like the 70s and 80s were a magical time for Polish illustration and animation)

    • @mattjabbar
      @mattjabbar  4 года назад +2

      Yes, I agree that their works look awesome, I like the old style Polish posters too, but to be honest I am not so much inspired by Polish works. Maybe it's because as I kid I liked more French and Belgian comics like "Hugo" or "Asterix", so I went for more Bande dessinée comic-like characters and backgrounds.

      BTW I really recommend this series of comics pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugo_(komiks)

      @@mattjabbar Asterix was a big part of my childhood also, I had never heard of Hugo before so I'll make sure to check it out! I think it would be nice if for a future project you go back to your Polish roots a little and include either the stylistic choices that were popular whilst you were growing up/learning to illustrate, or include some Polish motifs in a piece (these are just suggestions, don't feel as though I am hounding you). I'm looking forward to seeing more of your coloured pencil pieces, they are very different in energy from your watercolour work; I feel as though the coloured pencil is very robust and lively (I recall you saying at the beginning of this year that you wish your work to be more lively, this is a good experimentation I believe) whereas all your watercolour work was a lot more calm and serene, like looking out at the ocean.
      I'm rambling now, but thank you for answering my question!

      Oh no, I did a VERY light sketch with the Evolution pencil to know that I can fit stuff properly on the page and to have a guide for the shapes of the lanterns. Also, you must remember that I don't show a lot of stuff in the video - this is actually the second attempt on this piece - the first one I scrapped after just one of the lanterns and I then spent some time practicing the colors 👍

    I'm (again and again) amazed by your color choices. How do you see and "translate" the colors from reference picture or real life to your painting that it becomes very vibrant and colorful and sooo pleasing in the eyes? Like, for example your tree trunks have red, green, blue and black on them. If I were to paint the same tree trunks, it would be flat brown, or maybe some light brown and darker brown. :(
    I know that for example a wall is blue, then it wouldn't be just blue, maybe there are parts of it that is darker or maybe gray, then some part of it may be covered in sunrays so it become yellowish or even white, but actually putting those (what i call) brave colors has been proofing very difficult for me..

    • @mattjabbar
      @mattjabbar  4 года назад +1

      Try fiddling with some filters in Photoshop. Especially one that puts saturation to "the max". See that even in dullest parts there are some colors if you "amplify" them and if there are really non then you just have to make things up to make this part more interesting. Over time you make a "filter" in your head that you can use to analyze what you see. 👍

      @@mattjabbar Thank you so so much for this. I'll try it and keep practicing. You and your works have inspired me to do more art that I actually finished a watercolor picture book for my baby. The drawings are still inconsistent and the colors are flat and even wierd in some places, but I was super happy that I actually finished it. I am working on the line art of the second picture book (still for my baby) and I already get a concept for the third one. I hope I could see improvements in this next project compared to the first one. Wish me luck :)

    The final result is amazing! I'm impressed by how you manage to use and mix colors that are completely different from the original photo! It seems a natural instict to you to choose the right one. Is there any particular text/book/author that you could reccomend to help to get distance from the original color of a picture and, instead, hazard more with colors?
    Thank you very much :)

    • @mattjabbar
      @mattjabbar  4 года назад +2

      I'm guessing that it's because of my experience as a backgrounds painter for anime where I had to adjust my palette to match the other artists. It made me realize that you can use completely different colors for stuff. I also like impressionist paintings :)

      Yes and the name of the brand Caran d'Ache, is named after a french cartoonist who was born in Russia hence is pseudonym "Caran d'ache", is nothing but the French phonetic transcription of the Russian word "Карандаш". The circle is complete.
