Golf Shaft Weight Test & Comparison | What Effect Does Shaft Weight Have on Performance in Irons?

  • The golf shaft weight is one of the most important aspects of any club fittings. At 2nd Swing, identifying the correct golf shaft is the top priority in a fitting right behind fitting for the proper clubhead. It's no secret that playing the wrong golf shaft can cause issues on the golf course.
    In this video, 2nd Swing's Drew Mahowald and master fitter Thomas Campbell test various different shaft weights to compare the performance differences and illustrate why playing the proper golf shaft weight is so important.

    I find the lighter the shaft, the worse my tempo up to a point. Currently playing Aerotech FC115g. I find 115-120 is my sweet spot. 130 leaves me feeling like I'm working hard, 100 and below pulling shots.

      Thanks for watching. The challenge is finding all the same flex with a range from 70g to 130g. We plan on more in depth shaft weight test of shafts of the same flex probably steel only.

    • @pinger530
      @pinger530 3 года назад +1

      As well as each of those shafts has a different bend profile. It’s not a really valid test unless you have the same brand and model shaft in the same flex in different weights. Of course you’re going to have much more limited weight range you can test, but that’s the most accurate way to test your hypothesis. If you are using different shafts from different companies, who’s to say the difference is actually weight related and not bend profile related and torque related, etc? This is a flawed comparison and is actually misleading.

  • @Unplugged704
    @Unplugged704 10 месяцев назад

    Amazing from 70g vs 130g, his swing speed and distances differences were nominal.
    I play 110g and SS is about the same as Thomas. my dispersion is pretty wide, with drive bias.
    Been considering going 115-120g. 🤷‍♂️🤔.

  • @justinstephenson9360
    @justinstephenson9360 3 года назад +6

    Sorry but this test whilst a good idea is just not good enough because not enough shots were hit. Thomas hit 4 shots and the one big outlier was a shot with the lightest golf shaft which completely skews the results. Without knowing more it is impossible to know how much of the outlier shot was the shaft and how much was the player.
    For this to be a valid test and to have a reasonable statistical significance you would need to hit at least 20 shots per shaft - despite rumours to the contrary Thomas is human and that number of shots might have tired him out!
    After saying that I completely agree with the conclusion that shaft weight is a really important variable and every golfer should go to a proper fitter for that.
    I have a fairly average swing speed: 95 mph with driver, 80 mph with 7i. About 18 months ago I was playing M1 irons with a standard 65g reg shaft in them and because lessons had improved my swing I was starting to get shots which flew a lot of higher and 15 yards further than expected, I switched to i210s and 80g Steelfiber reg shafts and I could actually feel where the head was.

  • @glenburr6755
    @glenburr6755 3 года назад +1

    It would have been a nice test if you tried different weight shafts that actually fit the golfer. I think getting the correct weight shaft for the player is #1, head #2. I have heard there is a “sweet zone” as far as shaft weight for everyone. If you had different weight shafts that would fit his swing better, you could have proven that. ⛳️🏌🏽‍♂️

  • @charlesnugent8266

    I would imagine that these results would vary widely based on swing speed. This may have been more useful if done with slow/average/fast swing golfers?

    So if I’m already hitting that 130 gram Dynamic Gold S300 already high, would you recommend going into an X flex shaft or change something else in the golf club to bring down the ball flight? I’m hitting an old school blade 7 iron in about the mid 20 degree launch with quite a bit of spin.

    • @michaelmeade7877
      @michaelmeade7877 Год назад

      Could be the load of the shaft that would make a difference. Dynamic gold 120 and nippon modus 120 are very different. Modus is stiffer through the middle of the shaft where dynamic gold is less variable throughout. For MY swing (heavy top loader), modus presents far less backspin and a lower launch giving me more yardage with less weak misses to the right

    What i've never understood in fitting is why the head gets picked first? The shaft allows the player to deliver the head, so is it not a waste of time to pick a head first, then go to a shaft?

    I know this is an old video but hopefully this will get seen. I was fitted into a stiff c taper lite last year but wound up going with graphite kuro kage 105 stiff. Since then I’m swinging a bit faster and I find I’m hitting them too high and spinning them too much. I’m swinging 7 iron around 87 mph with about 120 ball speed. I’d also like to go a bit heavier. Do you think I can handle the xstiff in the c taper lite or should I go for a slightly heavier stiff?

    • @2ndswing
      @2ndswing  Год назад

      C-taper 120S would be a good start. Possibly C-Taper lite 115x too Generally 88-90 mph is where I go from stiff to x-stiff for shaft recommendations in fittings - Thomas

    I expected club head speed (and therefore ball speed) to increase as you progressed to lighter shafts and the carry too. However, the clubhead speed only noticeably increased with the 70 gr. graphite shaft, but this did not translate into more carry due to increased spin and height. My takeaway is that if you have a swing speed approaching 90 mph, graphite does nothing for you. Question is, at what swing speed does graphite become the better choice?

    • @banditbaker1675
      @banditbaker1675 3 года назад +1

      Sorry Chester I think that Bryson pretty well disproves your conclusion. The weight, stiffness, torque and bend profile are the determining factors not the material i.e. graphite or steel.

    • @JDSFLA
      @JDSFLA 3 года назад

      @@banditbaker1675 Actually it is weight that I am focusing on (as did this test). If you want to go as light as 70 grams you have to go graphite as there is no steel shaft that light. If there were, then I would expect similar club speed numbers - whether steel or graphite in 70 grams.

    • @banditbaker1675
      @banditbaker1675 3 года назад

      @@JDSFLA Sorry Chester, your comment, "My takeaway is that if you have a swing speed approaching 90 mph, graphite does nothing for you. Question is, at what swing speed does graphite become the better choice?", seems to be focusing on Swing speed and you suggest that Graphite shafts are not suitable for Golfers with faster swing speeds. That's why I commented that Bryson debunks that theory. He currently has the fastest swing speed on Tour and uses graphite shafts in ALL his Clubs.
