We had the opposite experience of yours, our contractor handled everything, I told him to make the decisions since I am so bad with colors etc. I gave him 3 choices of flooring and he picked the one that would go best with his custom cabinets. Everything went off without any problems, he was in and out in 5 weeks including taking out a wall, adding 2 beams, laying the floor and molding in kitchen, laundry, living room and hallway. We felt it was worth the $32,000 after 33 years with our old kitchen. I do believe you get what you pay for, we are very frugal but we didn't want our house torn up for months and months. We didn't need to be at the house because everything was so well planned and he could make the decisions that needed to be made on our behalf. I think that is what people pay for when they remodel with a seasoned contractor. Glad your kitchen is done, it is lovely.

Even the small sample pots are expensive. If you want to try out several colors before purchasing, it'll cost you as much as a gallon of cheaper brand paint. You definitely need to know what you want!

Not that long ago, I was able to get a gallon of Glidden from Walmart for around $12-13. Not the highest quality paint, but just fine for painting any room but a bathroom or kitchen. Not so anymore. Now it's at least $21. And forget about Lowe's or Home Depot, you'll spend a lot more than that!

Now i know I did mine right! Me (female) and my children did ours by ourselves. It was 21 x21 feet. I was widowed with 9 children and the money was not there for professionals to do it. We stripped everything out and started from scratch. Because of money it took us two years! Two years of washing dishes in the bathtub! But it was worth it all! I did it all with cash as we went and got everything just like I wanted it. We only had one mishap. A cabinet slipped out of one of my sons hands and hit me in the head…..Lol. Other than that I have NO regrets taking on the task by ourselves. As a family we have learned a lot over the years building and remodeling. My sons (7) got the best education ever and 4 of them now work in the commercial building industry! Always give things a try!!!

7 months into our kitchen remodel that has gone all the way to the studs with new insulation, sheetrock, flooring, assembling custom cabinets etc. My husband is doing it all himself though ( but for the quartzite countertops). Luckily I have a very large mud room that is compensating for the lack of a full kitchen. We’re getting there.

Sorry to hear you're in the middle of it! We know it can be stressful.

  • @rt3box6tx74
    @rt3box6tx74 Год назад +9

My contractor didn't want to handle insulation. I was fine with doing it.
He was doing sheetrock when we decided to take a weekend trip that extended to include Monday. Monday he came (he had a key to the addition only) but didn't want to work on sheetrock so he installed facing around windows (and doors) which hadn't yet had insulation stuffed around them. The sound of passing trucks reminds me often that those window surrounds didn't get insulated. He also would jump ahead of the normal installation timeline of items that made my tasks harder. Normally drywall mud is done pre window facings, but he made my job mudding sheetrock around windows more difficult by forcing me to mud with facings in place.
By the time we were done my brain was calculating every hour that we paid for as he went to pick up materials every morning at our local lumber yard 2 miles away. He had quite a clever routine worked out. He'd work at most for 3 hrs a day, but charge for 6 by running to pick up items he'd forgotten on his morning trip to town.
When I called to increase my insurance policy to cover the addition I expected to add the value of what we spent. No way! Agent informed me we had grossly over paid and their chart showed adding to master bedroom and bath was only half what it cost us.
I was pretty upset, especially at myself for not putting a stop to his little time clock games. He'd worked for us before, but mostly doing one-item jobs like installing a set of atrium doors, etc. When we first bought the house he rebuilt our 75 foot front and 40 foot back porches. At that time his labor charge seemed appropriate.

Sounds like wrong contractor(s) used. If there were no written drawings/plans in place before the work then you'll have more problems. Pay by the job usually means they have their act better together too. You shouldn't have to babysit the process every hour.

Well, your kitchen is beautiful! I love the color. It took us six months when we redid our kitchen. Luckily my husband left the sink in until the last minute so I could do dishes. funny story, quite a few years ago we bought a brand new washer and dryer because our washer quit. they delivered it and put it down basement. since my husband was a machine repairmen, he tried fixing the it and it didn't work, but when he went to put it all back together. It worked. So he said "well, lets just use the old one until it dies" it lasted TWO YEARS..obviously by the time it quit and we set up the new washer and dryer, they both were out of warranty. We crossed our fingers and they worked! Now we laugh about it. and so will you ( in a few years)

I had a total kitchen gut in 1989. The contractor only did kitchens. I had several estimates and chose him. He had drawings of what it was going to look like. We did not move any plumbing, which kept the cost down. The only thing he was not sure of was if he could put the cabinets up to the ceiling because he didn’t know if pipes were there. Fortunately, there were no pipes and I got the cabinets up to the ceiling.
    It took a week.
All these years later, the kitchen still looks pretty good. We chose white cabinets, which are in style. We did replace appliances, the floor and the cabinet handles.
The only issue I have is that refrigerators have gotten much bigger over the years. I have cabinets around my refrigerator, so I will be limited in what I can purchase when this one goes.

We stopped the payoff because the kitchen seemed to be bothering Tawra more than the mortgage. In the video Tawra said in restrospectm she thought the original farm sink wasn't worth the trouble, but I think once we figured out the big problem, it was worth it! (The problem was that the old sink drain was broken, but was held in by an inch of rust. We tried a lot of things to remove it, but what finally worked was grinding out all the rust with a diamond bit Dremel tool, while being careful not to damage the porcelain enamel.)

Two, I’m glad you didn’t put the doors on the pantry because it looks great and much easier to access.
Three, appliances are no longer built to last. I’m still using my mom’s washing machine from the eighties. Doesn’t have a bunch of whistles and bangs but it still washes my clothes. Her frig finally died in 2020. My nephew had build a new house and he bought a Samsung and I got his old one. He has had more trouble with it and his old one is still working. Now the freezer turns into just a refrigerator in the summer months but I can live with that. Lol

I understand that - we ordered our dishwasher ahead of time but that's because everyone told us to do it because it was 2021 and we were in the middle of a supply chain nightmare. Our dishwasher arrived promptly at the start of the renovation and wasn't installed until 8 months later. I was worried about the same thing you were but it has worked just fine (Bosch). Our GE refrigerator works as well but we've had some issues with the lights going out in the freezer.

I’m sorry to hear the issues you had. First of all get several bids. Apples for apples and oranges for oranges. Never pay by the hour. Some people work slower than others. Pay by the job and have everything in writing. Get references and talk with some of their customers. You shouldn’t have had to figure out how to retro fit some of your existing cabinets. Experienced contractors know what they are doing. Your contractors were probably very nice they were not great ones..
