What a great lens and happy you're happy with it Stefano. I however will be sticking with the 400mm 2.8 as I did not like the background separation an f6.3 lens gave me even at 600mm although when the subject is close it can be really nice. The other issue I had was that it's a 200mm F5.6, which means you really will be only using the longer end and that's okay but somewhat of a waste. I would much rather have a 200-400mm F4 lens that you add a 1.4x TC to like Nikon to Canon has.
@@patricksmith2553 I agree! I find the 400 f2.8 beautiful and the backgrounds are gorgeous on it! I'm crossing my fingers they will release a 300 f2.8 sometime down the line. I think pairing that lens with the 200-600 will be a great combo. How do you like the 400 f2.8 for birds/wildlife?
@@StefanoIaniro It's amazing Stefano, the 400mm 2.8 has the greatest acuity of any lens. The only thing comparable to it's IQ is the Zeiss Otus lenses. So from that standpoint there is no comparison and the crop setting is very useful. I have a 1.4x TC but I rarely use it anymore and will probably sell it when the A7R IV arrives! I think the new A7R camera will change the way people approach shooting wildlife and the thing I hate most about the other Sony camera's has pretty much been addressed, which is the ergonomics. So hopefully the next A9 will be even better than the A7R IV.
@@patricksmith2553 Hahaha you just said exactly what I was thinking about the A7RIV. I will definitely be buying it too. The fact that the crop mode is 26 megapixels (more than my A7III) is insane. I might rent the 400 f2.8 for an upcoming birding trip. I'd love to give it a try.
Wow, got to give it to Sony, they are really making some quality photography equipment! Loved this video, the scenery is just beautiful. I love that whole area and Sparks Lake has been featured in many magazines. Always look forward to your videos.

hey @Mark Smith. Don't you have the Sony 100-400mm? I just put my order in with barrowlens. I'm gonna rent one for a week. How do you like it? they didn't have the new sony 200-600 yet so I went with the 100-400. I've read its a good lens. Wanted to know what your thoughts were.
Congratulations for your superb videos, and thanks for sharing your experience, that's what it's all about, telling an amazing story with photos. Mark, I want you to help me by giving me an advice please, I just purchased a canon 80D new body with canon 100mm 2.8 macro and I'm saving money to buy a second hand 600mm f4 L IS lens ( around U$ 4.000) but watching this videos I wish to switch to Sony combo like this ( Sony a9 and this Sony 200-600 mm lens), but I would have to save more money and wait more time in order to buy it, and I feel I'm at a crossroads because I don't know what to do. Please tell me what would you do?
Thank you for doing this review. I have read and watched so much info on this lens along with the 100 - 400 and this here has confirmed for me it is the way to go.
Great video Mark! My 200-600 hasn't shipped yet but I'm really looking forward to getting it and trying it out. Loved the shot of the Osprey with all the wing area and layers too.
Mark, as ever, this is a beautiful video. But the shots of the Ospreys taken against the mirror like water of lake with the stunning backdrop, are on another level. I honestly consider the stills you chose are the best that I have ever seen you take. That Sony combo certainly appears to be incredible. I now have to go away and think of the best reasons in the world to explain to my long suffering wife, why I need to switch to the A9 and 200-600 from my Nikon D500 with 200-500. Incidentally, I recently bought her the Sony RX10 mk4, which also has a 600mm equivalent lens and she loves that camera.
Great stuff! I'm sitting in my front courtyard and heard a hummingbird whiz me while watching this video! (Stopped watching immediately) Now I have nice pictures too!
Great video Mark, Now I need to hit that location with my Sony 200-600. You do say Sunriver resort. but is the location of where you are shooting on their property or did you have to drive to another location, also what month was this? I want to go down that way next spring or early next summer, Thanks for any help.
Hello Mark, Firstly the photos are a great. Sony alpha 9 and this lens fits perfectly.Tracking system like flawless also Do you know about the focusing system inside the lens? Thank you
Great video again. I knew you would replace the 100-400 with the 200-600, as it's just a better lens for wildlife thanks to the extra range, and we can see that most of your shots are at 600mm. Love your videos and especialy your story telling :) Im struggling to get sharp photos of deers with the 200-600 and a7iv. Im out just after sunrise. But at especialt 600 mm I cant get animals sharp. Is it due to heat from the ground already that early in the morning - and sun already too bright ? Also - tried to take some shots of a golf player swinging/hitting a ball at 1/20o0 and 600mm. Hes not that sharp and I only got 4-5 photos from the swing. Is that due to a7iv only shooting 10 fps ? Or was that just my shutterspeed being too slow at 1/2000 ?
HI Mark ... thank you for this great Video ... i possess the Sony 100-400mm GM that i use with the Sony 2x TLC for the extra reach of up to 800 mm and the Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary with the MC-11 Converter EF to FE ... that i use on my Sony A9. I was thinking getting rid of the Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary for the Sony 200-600mm G OSS because of the Focus Ring of the Sigma being too close to the Camera and renders it hard to Focus due to the balance of Weight of the Lens plus the Focus ring stiffness . I am used to the Nikon D5 with a 500 pf lens. I was thinking of selling it to get the A9ii and 200-600. I like the quiet, the tracking, and other features of the A9iii but do you think I would be disappointed switching to teh A9ii with 200-600 from an AF and IQ standpoint?
It's a beautiful video. Thank you. I noticed in this video you shot wide open at f6.3. Do you shoot down a bit say f8 or f9 and do you notice any difference in sharpness in comparison to f6.3 ?
I am from Bangladesh!!photography is my hobby!!but I am in a poor country!!! I have some thing to tell to you//i need a help sir!!plz give me a opportunity🙂
Well, Mark, it looks like you're on your way to Nat Geo. Now you're out playing with the big boys Like Matt Koslowski. He was always one of my favorites from the Layers Magazine days and now he's hanging around with guys like you, haha. Great to see that you're really moving up in the world. But the only problem I have is that the Ospreys really don't stand a chance anymore between guys like you and Matt shooting at them and that new Sony equipment which looks like it's going to blow the doors off of Canon and Nikon. I don't know, maybe with time, Nikon and Canon will catch up but right now Sony has taken a pretty good lead with their mirrorless cameras and now their outstanding lenses to top off the line. Great stuff...your pictures and this outstanding video.
with all those new gear you tested... are you able to tell in advance what gear will best do the work you have to do ( sony, nikon, lens choice, etc . ) ? or you still have some area to work on ? thanks
Great Video. I'm loving my copy of the 200-600. After watching all the video reviews of this lens I think I need to pick up a copy of the A9. My A7R3 does pretty well, but it looks the the A9 completes the combo with this lens.
Great video. I pre ordered it and got it in last week and sold my Sigma 150-600C. I LOVE how fast it focuses! It's lightning quick for such a massive zoom range! I've only got to take it out once in bad conditions to test it but I loved it and can't wait to go when the lighting and weather are actually good.
Mark you never cease to amaze me. Your poetic narratives are only surpassed by you action packed moments of beauty that are timeless elegance. This is the magic of photography. Capturing the moment and freezing it so that it can be studied and appreciated beyond what the human eye can record. Some day we will meet. ~ your neighbor
Awesome video, fantastic shots!!! The Angry Photographer would have an aneurism seeing all that Sony gear in one place. The Sony hate is strong in that guy lol.
Just totally Awesome Mark, I think with all this going on around us right now...Corona Virus, it's time to treat ones self to the A9 to go with my 200-600mm, thanks for everything! C
Deep gratitude for all your guidance! I have the Sony a9 with the 200-600 lens. Request your Council on how you carry it when you are walking around, what kind of carry strapping? Your setup guide was very helpful! Many thanks.
@@MarkSmithphotography Just returned from the high Andes in Chile, teaching meditation and on the side photographing condors with the A9 and the Sony 200-600 lens. I wanted to express gratitude because I have followed your A9 Camera setup which makes the whole adventure so much better. Would love to send you a few pics of condors as a sign of gratitude, but dont know how. I live just North of San Francisco. Also I will be arriving in Sarasota FL Monday night and start teaching at Rising Tide Friday night for the weekend where I invite you as our guest. I dont know where you live in Florida incase there was a way to connect Tuesday-Friday Oct 15-18. I did purchase the Black Rapid strap and appreciate its design. If there was a way to distribute the weight to both shoulders I would prefer that. I also have trouble with the exposure adjustment dial wandering on its own. Further difficulties are when touching the small flywheel just below the focus button unintentionally I often get the Focus Cancel message??? Lately The AEL button which we setup as per your video does use the spot focus, but use the shutter sped that is currently being used rather than reverting to 1/500 as we told the camera to do in the setup. Hope this isn't all to long. Thanks, Shabda
IMO, this lens is worth the money. At least at daylight it really delivers excellent pictures and also the Autofocus works great. At least on the A9. Only at low light this lens is not good. An f/6.3 at 600mm, oh boy, that is like in a darkroom then.
Mark Smith Hmmmm...I am not so convinced. If you are after feather perfection you rarely go beyond ISO 1600, the less the better. But for low light situation there is a 2.8 or 4.0 option :)
Mark, Will your SONY A9 QUICK START GUIDE FOR BIRD AND WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY be appropriate for the SONY A9II or will you be offering an updated guide for theA9II?

Great video Mark. Love this one and I was watching it 2 times already.
Such poetic descriptions of the photos! Thank you.
Great video ,need to get myself a 200-600 for my Sony a7iv . Ps what an absolutely stunning location that was .
I have some thing to tell to you//i need a help sir!!plz give me a opportunity🙂
which one is better professional camera for wildlife photography between Nikon D850, Canon 5 D IV and Sony a9 II ?
That was such a great trip you took us all on!
Sony can't make the difference without "mark smith"
That was awesome
Would you also have a Sony 7Riii quick start guide for birding and wildlife photography?
Not only the pictures but you make a great story behind it, nice 👍 , i m right? if i buy a combo 7iii+200-600
Colors here seems off compared to when Mark used A74 with 600 mm ....
Thanks so much.
Your content is so relaxing and beautifull wow i want to have more experiences like this myself
How do you make a choice between D500+200-500 and A7m3+200-600G
with all those new gear you tested... are you able to tell in advance what gear will best do the work you have to do ( sony, nikon, lens choice, etc . ) ? or you still have some area to work on ? thanks
Each camera and lens has its own special attributes or areas where they perform best.
Awesome! What do you think about pairing this 200-600 with the upcoming A7R IV for same situations (songbirds, hummers, and raptors)?
Thanks and not sure. Would have to try the combo out.
What do you think when you compare the 100-400mm vs. 200-600mm for birding and wildlife? I really like the 600mm but sometimes I need 100mm.
Not enough time for comparisons but I will say this, the 200 600 hasn't come off my a9 since it arrived.
The 200-600 is now on sale everywhere. 100 off. As of the time of this writing.
It would definitely work better with a camouflage tent ....
Great Video. I'm loving my copy of the 200-600. After watching all the video reviews of this lens I think I need to pick up a copy of the A9. My A7R3 does pretty well, but it looks the the A9 completes the combo with this lens.
Thanks. The a9 is in a league all its own.
Thanks. It is an excellent lens
You are quite poetic yourself! Thanks for the kind words.
Love your work and love your voice 🥰
200-600 with A9 what shutter speed for Osprey dive?
Look for the option that says "quantum speed fast" Firmware update 3.9999992
Depends on many factors
Are these all from the 200-600?
Yes
Awesome video, fantastic shots!!! The Angry Photographer would have an aneurism seeing all that Sony gear in one place. The Sony hate is strong in that guy lol.
Thanks. You are correct, he does not like Sony!
Just totally Awesome Mark, I think with all this going on around us right now...Corona Virus, it's time to treat ones self to the A9 to go with my 200-600mm, thanks for everything! C
Enjoy!
Great setup to try out. That would be a pick for me to use if switch to Sony.
Thanks for sharing your passion and awesome storytelling
Thanks
Just got the 200-600 and I can’t get a sharp photo at 600mm so strange.
looks like you had alot of fun thanks Mark ps I also love my 200 to 600 Sony
Very good compilation and thanks for sharing this beauty.. amazing how this breathtaking view is completely underplayed here though 😀
Deep gratitude for all your guidance! I have the Sony a9 with the 200-600 lens. Request your Council on how you carry it when you are walking around, what kind of carry strapping?
Your setup guide was very helpful! Many thanks.
I use a black rapid strap and thanks for watching!
Depends on the camera really. A9 can handle high iso no problems so it isn't too restrictive being at 6.3
Mark Smith Hmmmm...I am not so convinced. If you are after feather perfection you rarely go beyond ISO 1600, the less the better. But for low light situation there is a 2.8 or 4.0 option :)
Excellent and gripping narrative. But I don't think the birds are sharp enough.
Thanks. They are plenty sharp
Awesome ! Thank you ....
Glad you liked it!
Beautiful photos. You do lovely work. Keep it up.
I just love what you do keep it up dude
Mark, Will your SONY A9 QUICK START GUIDE FOR BIRD AND WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY be appropriate for the SONY A9II or will you be offering an updated guide for theA9II?
Should work no problems
How is the tracking on 200-600mm lens? I’m going use it on at Sony a7Rii and Sony a7riv. Thank you
Tracking is fine on the a9
我po我的就完勝你們了~不用用到那麼好~隨便7d2+456就夠了
Amazing day amazing photography congratulations can’t wait for your next video
Thanks
I have no words Mark! Outstanding narrative and photographs. You are a visual poet.
Thanks
