Congrats on finding one of Sweden's hidden gems! Tourists usually talk about Stockholm, Gothenburg or the great forests of the north, but Visby is really one of the places to visit. And that's one friendly cat!
@@lethuliv5500 Yes, indeed it is and you are absolutely correct, but that wasn't the point I was trying to make. Gotland is visited by a lot of Swedes and tourists from other Nordic countries (plus Germany), however, it isn't very well known among tourists from other parts of the world, particularly from outside of Europe.
Next time you visit Gotland make sure it’s in a warm summer month and rent bikes or drive there and take the ferry over, and explore Sudret, ie the south end of Gotland! Sooo beautiful, like a Nordic version of rural Greece, and lots to see. The entire island is limestone so you can spend an afternnon picking fossils at the beach and swimming, seeing the Raukar ie tall rock formations standing around the coast in the water, there’s beautiful gardens to visit, local potter’s studios, communal saunas you can book for yourselves, and a lovely spa to get some lovely self care action, besides the pictoresque houses and churches! There’s a great bed and breakfast since the fifties called Holm Hällar where you can book your own cabin and have dinner too (lots of regulars in summer book far in advance though so availability only with planning ahead). Beautiful spot. Up on the islands northern end there’s Fårö, where Ingmar Bergman lived in a house he built, with lots to see there if you are a serious cineast. Also some of the islands oldest working structures are up in the north, Slite for instance, and long stretches of coast are just wild, only sheep and a zillion trillobites on the beach. Gotland is one of those places where so many Stockholmers go each summer to spend a couple of holliday weeks, I’m glad you enjoyed Visby!
There's even more to Gotland than just Visby. Lots of beautiful churches if you want to see them still standing (only one built after 1361). It's an amazing landscape! Go back to see the rest of Gotland :-)
I visited them all in 2019 and there were 92 of them. I hope I didn't miss any. And at least back in 2019 you could go inside, none of them were locked.
It's so fun to see the joy you expressed when visiting Visby, it is really a great town. I live on the southern part of Gotland aka Sudret, so it's fun to visit Visby every so often.
Nice! To bad I didn't see you there, it hade been fun to say hello. The medieval festival was downsized this year due to Covid-19 but it was great to be back again. Meagan, really great job with this video! Very windy on that third day! The Swedish television series "Maria Wern" was filmed in and around Visby and the photography is gorgeous in it. My late sister loved Visby, she lived in Stockholm for 6 years.

Thanks for the beautiful video. I was in Visby 28 years ago and feel now that I want to go there again! I went to Kinnekulle in Hällekis three months ago and it was magic. Aw, that spider! It's a house spider and wants to be indoors! It will eat all the gross flies and stuff! Also, Gotland is amazing. But I dunno if I'm just too Swedish or something, because I was like "yeah of course you can go in the ruins that's just normal?" and "800 years isn't really incomprehensibly old..." heh. Next time you go to Gotland, I recommend the southern tip with the raukar!
Haha, been to "medeltidsveckan" two times, and I recognize every single frame in your video. It's an amazing place. Revisted Gotland on my honeymoon, and we went up north to Fårö - and I could see why Ingmar Bergman fell so hard for that place that he moved there.
Hey that's fun! I never saw you there but because of covid all of us medievalists were trying to keep mostly to ourselves. Gotland and Visby is amazing.
Of you saw a short old man that looked like he had been in a giant fight when you where walking around the market, don’t worry, that was my grandfather, he had a “fight” with a rauk the day before
I have only done family research back to the 1300,l but knowing your ancestor visited the same streets and the church you look at makes it more intresting, fully understand if other people doesnt get that .
I was at a conference in Visby once a late summer - I think in September. I walked into the city many times and the weather was beautiful during the entire stay! I really enjoyed the city, its atmosphere, and I miss my walks along the wall. I hope to return again 🙂
Hi. The best part with Visby is all the small streets and beautiful houses. Just walk around and think how old everything is. Visby was (is) the cool place of northen europa for a long time. Keep up the nice videos :)
I've been going to Medeltidsveckan on Gotland for 21 years now. It's, as you can tell, one of my favorite times of the year. It's amazing, but it does take some time to find all the things to do and figure out what it's really all about. Find someone with a lot of experience that can show you around next time and stay for the week!
Definitely putting Gotland on my to do list next time I visit Sweden - PLUS we have a @MissionBlue Hope Spot there - led by some amazing ocean conservationists - fighting for our blue planet! Yay!!!
Visby is really beautiful! I've been there and would really like to go back! One of the best vacations I did in Sweden was to go by bike on parts of the Kattegattleden cycle path in south west Sweden (awarded “Cycle Route of the Year in Europe” in 2018 when it was finished). It's 390 km in total, but we biked only Helsingborg-Halmstad since it was convenient to get to and from there by train. We rented electrical bikes in Helsingborg that we could drop off in Halmstad (not always allowed to bring bikes on trains here ☹️ ). Most beautiful parts of the trip was around Höganäs and the Kullahalvön peninsula - vineyards and gorgoeus hills here and there along the way, apart from the sea view. We catched a sunset at Kullens fyr - so beautiful! I'm thinking on returning to finish the rest of the legs of the cycle path some time.
My favorite part of Sweden and I've visited many times. Even did my military service there. Visby i smagical but don't miss out on the rest of the island.
I went with my daughter in November '22. We went to all of those ruins (somehow our favorite was the S:t Pers and Hans ruins), had our favorite meal at Creperie & Logi, and were there for the first snow of the season. Visby is where my family who emigrated to the US lived until 1893. I immediately found it to be "home." I love it there. I'd love to go during the festival, but that kött i bröd... Hahaha. Looks like "Meat in Bread" did a better job. And after watching your vid, I understand why there's a small surfing culture there.
I vissited gottland just a few weeks prior to Meagan... And it was so hot they came out with a level 3 warning to not be out in the sun, that is pretty much unheard about there. Anyway, it chilled down to a cold 28C later in the afternoon
I been around gotland a couple of times but u need to go there again and go around the whole island cause theres so much stuff to see even outside visby, google gotland and check out all the other stuff to see there cause its really worth it. You should aslo go to gothenburg on the west coast thats where i live and its a very nice city.
It looks like the MTV was very downsized this year, but at least it happend. Cant wait for next year! Usaly there is happynings in every streetcorner, ruin or park. When in Visby one must always by the at Kränku, thats tradition… even if they now have a webshop.
Haha, "Jag ser jättebra ut" actually translates into "I look really good". Not sure if he misspoke or you missubtitled him, but that's hilarious to me.
He meant "Jag ser jättebra ut [genom visiret]" - the last part of the sentence was only implied. I think he just emphasised the words a bit odd, so it came across as meaning "I look really good" in Swedish, as you heard it. :)
You don’t write “jätte bra” in Swedish. He should say ”jag ser bra” [genom visiret] as a reply to the question. Saying “jag ser bra ut” means that he thinks HE is handsome! 😂 if you want to write very good it’s “jättebra” in one word.
If you come to Visby with kids you must go to Kneippbyn and visit the house used as Villa Villekulla in the Swedish TV-series about Pippi Longstocking.
I sort of cant visit Visby, because I live there. Kränku, the shop. a quite well known shop for their own tea blends. Its not uncommon that I get orders to bring when I travel. Though their tea can be found in some stores on the mainland. Kränku by the way is the Gutnish word for a three legged stool you sit on when you milk cows. There is more to see on Gotland, one thing is the Rauk fields.
Mead is a wine made of honey and there is like other wines worse and better maed´s depending on circumstances how to make it, and the price, the taste is a little bit sweet or "round" from the honey. There is mead in the price range from 70 to around 800 Kr
I was in Visby on a class trip once, was great! I rode a tandem bike that we rented, then we crashed it and I had to get stitches at a hospital, that was great, got the best souvenir in the form of a scar as well. 10/10 Definately will visit again.
Sad to say I've never been to Gotland, hoping to go one day. I haven't really traveled around Sweden that much which is a shame. Might be because I'm Swedish :)
Visby is super cool! Next time rent a car and get out on the Island. Gotland is so much more than Visby. For example, there are 92 medieval churches on Gotland and 90% are not in ruin. Tons of stuff to explore!
13:05 About the queue outside the store. In Stockholm some nightclubs in the 90’s hired people to just stand in line and go back to the end when they was first! This was to fake the popularity of nightclubs around Stureplan. And of course the bouncers worked sloooow to build a long line of people. No one liked the places that missed a line 😂😱
Gotland is a beautiful island, but much more than Visby. Amazing nature, a lot of culture/history and handicraft all over the island. You vän visir the Island för seems and there will still be things left worth seing.
High quality armor isn't cheap. It wasn't cheap in the medieval times either. That's why a lot of people used chain mail even when plate armor was around.
I miss sweden. I noticed you sitting in a cafe with the trains going past at one time. Not a big fan of churches but the churches are nicer in Sweden. Are they allowing people to enter from the uk yet without testing and vaccine certificate
If you ever decide to go back, and not stay focused around Visby, I'd rekommend Lumelundagrottan, a " Stalactite cave" in the northern parts of Gotland. I remember biking there from Visby with an ex and on our way there stopping for a "Saffron pancake" (a local delicassy) at a café we just happened to go past. I would also recommend looking at Glassmagasinet in Visby as their gimmic is that they have over 260 different kinds of ice cream. But great that you managed to go there during Medeltidsveckan and also while the weather was OK! It is not fun when it is pouring rain (which place is?) since a lot of the ruins lack roof :P
It's absolutely incredible to hear your thoughts of many of the everyday things found in our culture that you stumble across. A pissoir, also known in French as a vespasienne. this "pissconer" is a French invention and it´s common in Europe. This tool provides a urinal in an public space with a lightweight structure. Sweden had a great cultural exchange with France through our royal band from Jean Baptiste Bernadotte (1763-1844), not many tourists thinking about this little thing of connection. So a pissconer is use for Men. And "Bajamaja" (small boxes) is use by both Sexes but we don´t want to use the "Bajamaja" to just take a piss. A "Bajamaja" are commen during Festivals and "someone" has to emptying them on a regular basis, so its better too have piss and poo, but 50% of the piss is takeing care of by useing a pissoir that going down a pipe underground. And as many have said before, take a trip to Gotland and skip Visby and focun on rest of the of the island.
I were on Gotland 2 years ago and reconiced lot of the places you visit Visby is rely nice place But can Halland an other time that i is from There you Varbergs Fästing if like old buildings or Halmstad slott, Tjolöholm (not so old but rely fancy), Tullbron in Falkenberg and go and shop in Ullared on Gekås
I spent a week on Gotland in 1987. Thanks for taking me back. I arrived with my Swedish cousins via ferry, which was a fun ride. The people on the ferry were surprised that my three-year-old daughter spoke English so well. What they didn't realize was that she spoke zero Swedish. Keep up the good work and stop using the word "footage" to refer to the video you take. I doubt that you are using feet of film.

Been many years since i visited Gotland, might have to do it next summer!
Mead is a wine made of honey and there is like other wines worse and better maed´s depending on circumstances how to make it, and the price, the taste is a little bit sweet or "round" from the honey. There is mead in the price range from 70 to around 800 Kr
Anywhere is better than Västerås...//Greetings from a Västeråser
ÄNTLIGEN EN NY VIDEO
Been there before, and next week we go for 9 days to Gotland again
Go to Sigtuna. Well worth visiting!
I was in Visby on a class trip once, was great! I rode a tandem bike that we rented, then we crashed it and I had to get stitches at a hospital, that was great, got the best souvenir in the form of a scar as well. 10/10 Definately will visit again.
Great video!
I was expecting more stealth and RBS 15.
My home town 😍
12:23 ååååååå jag ÄLSKAR kränku!!! ♥️
Gotland ❤️🔥
Kändis
Sad to say I've never been to Gotland, hoping to go one day. I haven't really traveled around Sweden that much which is a shame. Might be because I'm Swedish :)
Yeah, many of us do that mistake, including me.
Visby is super cool! Next time rent a car and get out on the Island. Gotland is so much more than Visby. For example, there are 92 medieval churches on Gotland and 90% are not in ruin. Tons of stuff to explore!
fina bilder... såg du Pippi Långstrump...? 🙃
Everyplace is better than Västerås! :)
Have you been to Nora?
If you ever decide to go back, and not stay focused around Visby, I'd rekommend Lumelundagrottan, a "
Stalactite cave" in the northern parts of Gotland.
It is not fun when it is pouring rain (which place is?) since a lot of the ruins lack roof :P
great video! I enjoyed the editing and scenery, your teeth are amazingly beautiful
Gotland rules!
Watch out for Valdemar Atterdag !
I have lived in Sweden my entire life and I have NEVER seen a spider that big before!!!😯
Visby is nice but only scratches the surface of Gotland. Way more to do and see on the rest of the island.
The Settlers of Cathan reference 👌😂
I were on Gotland 2 years ago and reconiced lot of the places you visit
Visby is rely nice place
But can Halland an other time that i is from
There you Varbergs Fästing if like old buildings or Halmstad slott, Tjolöholm (not so old but rely fancy), Tullbron in Falkenberg and go and shop in Ullared on Gekås
It’s still called footage, dude.
