Migrationsverket kicked me out of Sweden

  • I hope to be back within a year. 💛
    After a frustrating 16 months, my visa application was rejected by Migrationsverket. Ultimately, I had to leave Sweden. I flew back to the USA last week, and now I'm applying for a new visa which is estimated to take between 9-13 months to process. This whole situation has been exhausting and devastating for me. I've spent many years planning my journey to Sweden, and after living in Örebro for over two years, I was forced to leave. :(
    I wish this video were more entertaining, but I thought it was important to explain why I'm not in Sweden anymore lol. In the meantime, I'll be making lots of fun videos from Minnesota! Minnesota has lots of Swedish and Scandinavian roots, so it will be fun to show you guys where many Swedes settled back in the day.
    If there are specific videos you'd like to see from the States, let me know! Also, I love interacting with you guys on Instagram: reaganlouis
    bit.ly/Insta_reaganlouis
    Thank you for watching!

    I’m very sorry to hear about your experience. As someone in a similar position, I can’t even imagine not being able to continue my life in Sweden and the comment ‘just go home’ is so mind boggling being that we’ve spent years of our lives building a life in this country. Sweden is losing a true star! But I know with your positive energy and persistence you’ll find a way to get the end result you want, despite this set back!

      This is endemic to the Swedish migration policy. For years many foreign professionals have had to leave Sweden because of not getting permanent residency. A good topic to get into and shine a light on for expats living in Sweden. Svenskt Näringsliv (Confederation of Swedish Enterprise) has raised this issue for years because it harms Swedish industry. Sadly the center-left government does not seem to address this problem.

    First of all I'm sorry that this happened to you, but I have a couple of points that I would like to go through:
    1. The visa to search for a job after studies is a visa for 12 months and it is not extendable. Between your appeals and decisions you've been given 16 months, so even if you got your visa approved the first time, you got an extra 4 months to search for a job (visa validity starts from the moment you apply retroactively).
    2. It is a requirement for the visa after studies that you have enough money to support yourself for 12 months At the moment of application submission. Meaning that you should have the total amount BEFORE you apply, even if you're making freelance and you could support yourself every month. they won't follow your case every month, they just need to know if you can live for 12 months (tax free btw, which is a luxury in Sweden).
    3. During those 16 months of appeals, you had more than the 12 months the visa would have given you, so did you use the time for looking for a job? And if you did and didn't find one, why would they give you more time? (on top of the 4 months for free) you can still apply for jobs from outside of Sweden.
    I'm an expat living in Sweden and I've also had to deal with all the Swedish burocracy, and I really don't see where you "lost" in this situation. If anything, you got 4 extra months than the rest of us.
    I wish you Good luck applying for jobs cause once you get a contract with a Swedish company, everything becomes 100 times easier visa-wise. Hope you can return to Sweden soon.

    I believe Migrationsverket is after Försäkringskassan the most hated agency. As a swede I've had to interact with Migrationsverket because of my partner, and it was a horrible experience. Migrationsverket is set up in way that it's almost meant to keep people away, not aiding people in the migration process. It's primarily a bureaucratic control function where hope goes to die, and it's a cause for celebration when you don't have to deal with it anymore.

    • @DNA350ppm
      @DNA350ppm 2 года назад +7

      Migrationsverket is explicitely there to keep people away from Sweden. It is nothing "almost" - Sweden does not want immigrants at all. Sweden has actually stopped all immigration, and only a few exceptions are allowed. Migrationsverket is established to keep control, that any person has a legal right as an exception to come to Sweden, and in what capacity and for how long. The exceptions are very strictly limited. It is not like the USA, with its Green Card system. See above for my longer reply to this video .
      I feel very sorry for these facts, which on the top of it are hidden behind a nice facade, and make people so disappointed, and indeed, deceived.

      @@MeaganNouis Of course it is so, FK offends almost every Swede at some point.
      But native Swedes have seldom anything to do directly with Migrationsverket and so some well-meaning Swedes just vicariously hate this agnecy for not quickly and reliably helping those non-Swedes who are most in need.
      But Swedes with a huge and warm heart are not so many, when you check them closely. Swedes with a checkbook where their hearts should be are so many more.
      BTW average Swedes don't know exactly which authorities are responsible for what - and don't even know the difference between EU-migrants, expats, immigrants, and refugees. And which rules and rights apply to each of these groups. It is a political mess, where the large parties are afraid to lose votes to the populist party for underprivileged angry white men, to the right of the right-wing party.

    I see that some comments are negative to the way this has been handled and say that is typically Sweden. But the thing is this is a rule all over EU

    • @cg9875
      @cg9875 2 года назад +15

      I think one could easily argue some EU member states’ immigration laws are in some instances quite generous compared to US ones. When my parent lost their job in the US, they had a month to get another qualifying job and it didn’t matter they had lived there for 5 years. There was no 8-month period waiting for an decision on an appeal. Given the fact that nowadays there are actual lotteries for visas in the US (H1B) I can’t imagine things are any easier than they were 20 years ago.

      This was a huge problem with banks and loans after the big wave of deregulations in the 90's and a transition to more gig economy jobs in the larger cities. Lots of primarily, but not only, young people who had regular but variable income could not get loans for things like apartments and cars because the banks' systems were set up for almost everyone having a set job and a largely fixed income.
      It took about 10-15 years for the banks to adjust their systems, ince they realized they were actually loosing money rather than preventing risk cases from taking loans.
      It seems Migrationsverket operate on that same old principle of a set job with a fixed income, but unlike the banks they don't have any (or at least less) incentive to adjust for gig economy jobs/jobs that provide a regular but variable income.
      Which sucks for everyone really.

My class mate applyed for a student visa during the summer, but he never got it. He even flew to the states for x-mass and managed to get back without a valid visa;)
