The North Wales classic car show - a real mix of old cars on display at Bodrhyddan Hall

  • The North Wales classic car show at Bodrhyddan Hall was a new one to us, so we headed over to see what old cars would be in attendance. It was a one-day event so we hoped for a packed field, alas the "less-than-promising" weather forecast appeared to put off some people from taking their car to the Hall but there were still some very interesting classic cars, and modern classics, on display.
    Not having been to the North Wales classic car show before we weren't sure what to expect, regulars did say that it's usually busier than on the day we went over.
    Highlights included an early Standard 8 badged as "Cadet" (used on some overseas market cars), Simca, a smart non-rally-spec twin-cam Mk1 Escort, a BMW 1502, Austin 7, a large contingent of classic American cars, Datsun 240Z, Ford 100E convertible, Standard Vanguard Phase 2, various Triumphs, and many more. Very few pre-war cars turned up though, was it the weather? Are there very few pre-war cars in North Wales? Fewer and fewer properly old cars tend to attend shows like this nowadays but I would have expected a few more 1920s/1930s cars to have graced the field at Bodrhyddan Hall. Maybe next year!?
    It was fun to attend this show for the first time and we'll be back.
    2022 has been the busiest year ever for us and show and museum visits, we've not video'd them all but I think most of these events have made it onto the channel. There should be a few more outings of interest in the coming months, but most of the major outdoor events for 2022 are now behind us.

    Thanks for covering the Toyota Crown so well. I own an early 80's model, so seeing such a rare one like that really made my day.

    Loved the Simca 1100, the Dutch Mail had a fleet of vans of these, front tyres lasted a solid 6000 miles, the engines ran rough but were very strong.
    emptying mailboxes on the Sunday evening shift was my favorite past time as a student working for the mail, we'd meet up somewhere and race around in those Simca's

    When cars were individual not clones as they are now. I struggle now to know what cars are but anything from 1960-2000 I can see a mile off!

    Wow old school friend's late Dad had a Simca hatchback same colour and Reg had it many years 2 door Toyota Crown very rare late Registered Cortina Ghia on a A Reg November 1983 neighbour's who lived next to my parents had late registered light blue Chevette saloon on a A Reg someone in my village had a Datsun 120Y four door in the same colour 40 odd years ago some lovely cars here

    The giant American at 5:25 is a 1972 Imperial Lebaron. Imperial was Chrysler's luxury make. It was the largest American car in 1972. I have it's twin in my driveway.

    in the Chrysler line Le Baron is the model and Imperial is the top line spec.

    Rare 4 door Vauxhall Chevette saloon at 15:10 - I had one in white that took our family of 4 diown to the Dordogne and back without missing a beat, complete with loaded roof rack. The only discordant noise being 2 small, bored children plaintively asking "are we nearly there yet"!

    Was really hoping we would see more of the Nova kit car, A local private school owner brought a kit, back in the late seventies, which my brother was going to build for him, but for some reason it was not completed.

    I remember those volvos doing the touring car circuits. You could certainly tell where they'd been as they went round xx

    Twice you have mentioned Welsh registered cars, I have checked the suffix and they were both from Chester. ... Maybe the DVLA website is incorrect, your I-Spy book is out of date - or Chester is in Wales ? ... The car that stands out is the Mk2 Jaguar at 58:41 - RCA 122B. ... The disc in the windscreen has a different reg of RYR 522C. ... There's something not quite right there.

    I am fairly new to your channel and love your enthusiasm and commentary. I love that Herald 13/60 convertible. I had the estate version way back in time(my second car), in that colour blue. Now in my dotage poor eyesight and other health issues means I do not drive anymore, a question, would I be allowed membership of the Standard motor club without actually owning one?

    l had a Simca in the early 80’s and at the start of a long journey l filled it up with petrol. On leaving the petrol station the hand brake would not release. lt turned out that the chassis had collapsed from the weight of the full tank. lt was a right-off and now a bad memory.

      I'm sure it will, funnily enough both of our "moderns" (ahemm) are old enough that they could be booked into this and related shows as exhibits!!!!

    The Simca 1100 may be the rarest car here, many were scrapped due to severe rust and also mechanical issues so full marks to the owner of this car.

    I remember Clarkson saying about the Volvo Estate used in the British Touring Cars, they had read the wregs wrong, they thought it said The British Towing Car Championship

    I have found a RUclips channel that I think you would like. Its called NASS. The channel finds and restores old film from years and years ago. Corrects the speed of fps and colourises them. The results are fabulous. Well worth a look see..

    Amazing cars. I see the Chrysler club came out. That 1970 Plymouth Fury II is similar to one my brother had as a salesman company car. That boot was huge! Nice Imperial as well. Yes, they are huge cars.

    A very nice show. For me the first was the phase 2 Vanguard. My Dad had two of these, he changed the first one for the second because it was in better condition. For a big lump of a car it was surprisingly fast. We lived in Swansea & the trip to Birmingham finally had a bit of Motorway. So it could stretch its legs. All things are relative. Back then 55mph was normal, so this thing doing well over 70 was fast. No speed limit in those days. Petty there were no early Rovers or Armstrong Siddley's. They were common in South Wales the 50s & 60s. Along with Alard's, Bristol's, Big Healey's, Riley'y, Wolseley's, TR2/3, Big Vauxhall's. All manner of pre-war cars with bigger engines. Triumph's & roadsters. A lot of MG's & SS, Jaguar's. Jaguar Changed its name not to be associated with the German SS. Even though the SS stands for Swallow Sidecars. The other car make that was reasonably common was Bentley. Then we also need to remember the Ford's. The Humber's, Sunbeam's, Hillman's. All manner of Austin's & Morris's. What days they were. We had 2CV's & Renault's, Mercedes, Fiat. Plus lots of exotics. Now it is all foreign cars. Then mostly British.

    Interesting to see under the bonnet of the Standard 8. A family member had one before I was born and apparently rigged up an engine crane in the garage because the engine had to be taken out so often. I can't see why that would have been needed as access looks to be OK.

      To remove a Standard 8's engine, you have to lift the body up and remove the engine from underneath, rather than pulling the engine out of the top as on most cars.

      @@oldclassiccarUK Perhaps the crane was to lift the body or lower the engine. It was my mum who told me about it and she didn't know much about car repairs. The point was, what jobs could not be done with the engine in?

    Excellent video covering a wide variety of classics, with a good amount of relevant detail about each individual motor. At around the 21.00 minute mark a couple of Escort MK 2 RS 2000's rolled up. I was looking for the 'Mexico' markings on them as I remember the late great Jimmy Greaves drove a Mk 1 Escort from London to Mexico prior to the 1970 World Cup. Would the MK 2 Escort RS 2000 and Mexico models be variations of the the same car? I had it in my mind the RS2000 Mexico was the higher spec car. I may be completely wrong in my assumption. Other info on line doesn't make it clear.

    Maybe you could explain UK registration to us Yanks. I have no idea how to date it.
    Those new MGs were not imported to the States few people even know they were produced.

      The dating system was adopted around 1963. Generally speaking the single letter at the end of the plate tells you when the car first hit the road and therefore its age.
      The letter changed from August 1 of each year and ran through to the end of the following July.
      So a plate with an A at the end would denote a car that was first registered somewhere between Aug 1963 and July 64 (eg ABC123A). B was introduced from Aug 64 thru to July 65 and so on.
      The letters I, O, Q, U and Z were not issued.
      After working thru the alphabet to Y in 1982 they put the dating letter at the beginning of the plate, so Aug 83 to July 84 = A, and so on.
      After reaching Y in 2001, they switched to the current system which sees 2 changes per year, between March 1 to the end of August (eg, in 2002 that would be two letters, the numbers 02 and then three letters, as in the plate AB02ABC). From September 1 to the end of February the following year it would be 52 (AB52ABC), then from March AB03ABC and from Sept AB53ABC, and so on.
      The use of a 5 to denote the second half of the year was replaced with a 6 from 2010 (so a Sept 2013 car would be on a 63 plate) and a 7 from 2020. A new car as of today would be on a 72 plate.
      Oh yes, and you can transfer an older plate onto a newer car if you like. That's very popular as it hides the age of the car or personalises it (eg BMW123A, A234BOB, AA71TOM).
      Just writing this makes me realise how complicated it must seem to non-Brits.

    24:00 You didn't mention that one of the annoying points about the Standard 8 was the inability to access the boot from outside. One had to go inside the car and get to the boot behind the back seat.

    Decent show,i went last year,not as good as when it was at the Bodelwyddan castle tho.seemed to get alot more there and the field was much better kept.

    Many of the videos of car shows that Americans upload to RUclips are only for American cars, but I enjoyed the variety of countries and car models in this video. Looking at it this way, I found that many Americans also love cars from England, France, Sweden, Japan, etc. Some of the cars were quite maniac, and it was difficult to distinguish between them. Hahaha

      Foreign cars are not common at US car shows. Prior to the '70s foreign made cars were not very popular. Japanese vehicles from the 70s and 80s were made with poor quality steel and most rotted away pretty quickly. Prior to online/internet sales European parts were not readily available and many of those vehicles were simply parked when it became too hard to find parts.

      @@841k9 There was a reason why foreign cars in the 70s and 80s were difficult to maintain in terms of quality and arranging parts. I understand well why there are few foreign cars. I'm Japanese, but even with those circumstances, there were people who bought Japanese cars at the time, and Datsun's 510 and 240Z are still very popular and still exist. is a pleasure. Thank you.

      A good friend of mine was a dealer technician for Datsun. A team of engineers came over from Japan and asked them about problems with the vehicles.
      The engineers left in tears.
      All companies experience growing pains. Especially when entering a new market with a new clientele that has very different expectations.

    "American cars are not for everyone"...neither is that pre war junk and Vauxhall Cavaliers LOL..
    Let me tell you something you don't know, that Conv Corvette NEVER came with wheel arches like that, its "home" done so to speak, the US cars have more character than 90% of that stuff on show, JMO.

      @@oldclassiccarUK Cool, I have a '68 Plymouth Roadrunner (38 years, "long hauler" here😄) a '69 Dodge Dart, '68 Plymouth Fury Conv, and owned over 50 US cars in my life.
      That Burgundy Vette was at our local show 3 weeks ago in Hudds.
      Good to see the US stuff made between 1965-1975 if poss, cheers. West Yorks
