  • Classic cars gathered at the Crewe Heritage Centre on January 30th 2022 for the first of the year's "Off the rails" vehicle meetings, and the turnout was mighty impressive. We pottered over in our 1952 "sit-up-and-beg" Ford Anglia (Pop 103E shape), that car features in the video uploaded prior to this one, here though we focus on all the other preserved gems that headed out on what was a mild day for the time of year. The variety of classic vehicles that turned up was impressive, with cars, pickups, vans and motorcycles all rubbing shoulders with each others, their owners keen to catch up with friends and generally enjoy a few hours in like-minded company.
    It's not easy to pick favourites, but on my shortlist I'd definitely have the c1958 Chevrolet Apache pickup truck, the Mk1 Escort twin-cam (which I chat to its owner about in some detail), the mighty 1952 Cadillac Series 62 (same year as my Ford), an immaculate 3-litre Vanden Plas Princess, a 1933 Riley Lynx, and the very original Volvo PV544. Other rarities at the show included a super-original 3 Litre Austin (which I had a long conversation with the owner of, thanks Nigel), a Hillman Husky, and a smart red Mk2 Ford Transit, but there were plenty of other rarely-seen motors here too - for instance I don't remember the last time I saw an Opel Rekord, but there was one here. The classic ice cream vans were also a treat to see.
    Hats off to the organisers for putting this meet together, and to everyone who took their car over to the heritage centre in Crewe. This is set to be a regular meet-up, keep an eye on the "Off the rails" Facebook page for details and dates of upcoming meets.
    There are hundreds of videos about classic cars, vans, antique cars and other vehicles on this UK-based channel now, the full list can be found here:

    Thanks very much for watching, this vid is a little longer than I'd planned (hence splitting off the previous Anglia footage which originally I'd planned to bundle together with this one). Thanks also to my family who put up with having the internet connection bogged down for hours uploading this to RUclips :-)
    All likes, comments and subscribers welcomed as always, it really helps the channel continue to grow - more videos along soon!

    I do enjoy these walk around videos. I have always been a sucker for a RR Silver Cloud. a car with such presence. The Volvo is fabulous and I have always liked th Daimler XJ also. Totally agree with your comments about the newer Bentleys. I think the 3L Austin was a much underrated car, my brother has a Wolsey and I loved driving it.

    Hard to pick a favourite today, too many favourites to choose from. The British Classic's, the American's, I like so many of them. So I have two favourites (both are Fords). The Twin-Cam Escort, even by today standards, very much a fun car to drive and so nice to drive. And the Ford Galaxy 500, many of these had big block V8's, make an amazing sound and so powerful. Thanks for showing.

    I like these car show vids for the variety we see. The number of American cars is quite surprising.
    I've seen a few Mini vans/estates with the Hornet/Elf front end showing up on my Mini groups. That would had been a posh addition to the line up back in the period, especially in the Countryman "Woody" trim.

    Such a range of vehicles I couldn't choose a favourite. I love American pickups of the 50's and 60's. Personally I am not keen on the Caddy patina I suppose because when I was involved with custom cars you generally painted your motor. All the old brits were great including the Escort beautiful with Lotus engine. Finally (I'll stop the waffle) a friend had a maxi at the start of the 80's. A group of us went to Holland for a few days, nice trip riding bikes as you do, the car was great I don't recall any problems. My friend was a bit of a mad driver generally but well behaved over there! I caught up with him just before the pandemic hit (Jan. 2020) he is still a mad driver in a car but put him in his bus and he is good as gold (probably lose his job if he misbehaved). Thanks for this excellent walk around video I really enjoyed it. 👍

    Excellent video. Thanks for the piece about the Austin 3 Litre - I had mine when I was 21 - MUCH too young to appreciate it. VOT 868H, Damask Red, Automatic. I knew a retired Home Office engineer and he tuned my Carbs by ear. It was so smooth, you could stand a 50p on it's edge on that big aluminium nut behind the radiator ! All that was 46 years ago - where did that time go ! Anyway, thanks again for all you do, such varied and interesting content. Oh, you said you got rid of the Volvo - what will replace it ?????????????? Take care :-)

    • @oldclassiccarUK
      @oldclassiccarUK  2 года назад +3

      Still looking for a Volvo replacement, it was a fine car but just too complicated for my feeble mind to comprehend - fuel injection, LPG, various mods to the wiring etc etc, plus I never really took to the auto box. It's gone to a very good home now, sharing unit space with a collection of 164s.

    • @xqqqme
      @xqqqme 2 года назад +1

      @@oldclassiccarUK "I never really took to the auto box." U.S. viewer here. My father bought a new 1969 Volvo 144 (the first year with the B20 engine) and my mother insisted that if she was going to drive it, he had to get it with the Borg-Warner automatic that was available (at least here in the U.S.). I believe that was the BW 35 transmission, built specifically for European production. OMG what a dog it was! One can quarrel with automatics but, fact is, that transmission showed what a jump the Big 3 U.S. manufacturers had on the technology over other vendors. It completely sapped what comparatively little pep the car had (2-liter 4 harnessed to a very stout Swede).
      And, oh yeah...in the 7 years my dad owned it, I think my mom drove it about twice.
