So I have a heavily planted aquarium, would a Uv light kill or take away from the water any beneficial bacteria or nutrients that my plants would need,
hey i have silly question,,, UV light causes caner right? so if you are using it in your fish tank isn;t the water gonna be full of uv ray cancer causing rays right??? that might cause cancer while you are doing maintenece and stuffs, isnt it so? sorry for asking a dumb quesiton...i was just wondering...also i am a germiphone and i get really touchy with some subjects
Mahesh Bista No the light is within a sealed tube. As long as you cannot see the light, you will not be at risk. The water does not "store" the Ultraviolet light, therefore once the water passes through the tube, it is completely harmless to you and your pet fish.
this video is a year old, so I am not sure this comment will be seen, but I am wondering about the amount of time a uv sterilizer should be kept on? I have one in my sunsun canister filter and have read that if you leave it on 24 hours a day 7 days a week it could kill the beneficial bacteria in the filter. It is turned on by a switch on the filter and I do not see myself switching it on and off everyday. Wondering what you think about the claim that it kills beneficial bacteria as well? so far I left it off, afraid to lose my cycle...
I've been told if running inline with a canister filter or sump it needs to be in the return, AFTER the filter, is this true? Something about killing beneficial bacteria that would otherwise be colonizing the filter media?
My angel fish (freshwater) eggs get fungused many times and at times I get good hatching. Maybe its water carrying diseases. Will UV sterilizer help kill harmful pathogens in water so that the eggs hatch in good percentage ?
Hey Thomas, I know this is an older video but it's what I am trying to research on. My question is, my canister is rated 300gph it seems to be a good fit for the 3x coralife UV. I star reading and everybody has an opinion on this, So I thought I would ask yours. Can you run the UV on the return of your canister and get good uv usage? I am seeing the flow rate on mine to be ok, is it?. Thanks Thomas.
The differences between UV clarifers and sterilizers would have been cool to touch on. UVC bulbs like in a sun sun or any HOB or canister are total trash. They just don't have the same output of a sterilizer bulb. That has to be the biggest thing about UV that almost everyone is confused about.
I will have to further research that. I was always under the understanding that a clarifier is only enough uv to kill free floating algae. UV steralizers take things one step further and kill pathogens, viruses, bacteria, and protozoa. I know contact time plays a big part in that but i don't believe that a clarifier even with high contact time could kill off parasites.
@@AQUANUT can you please differentiate the uvc from uv sterilizer?I have a XiLong 5 watts UV submersible pump..the uv bulb is inside a black plastic tube and the water passes through it and pumped out by a motor head... does this belong to a clarifier?or a sterilizer? your reply will be much appreciated
@@bluesilver1410 If it is the same one i am looking at you have one that is rated as a sterilizer. Steralizers have the ability to kill pathogens where clarafiers could only kill off a algae bloom. Your unit also has a flow control to help dial in that high contact time needed for sterilization.
Can a UV aquarium light be used in purification of drinking water to kill viruses? For example, could you turn it on, drop it in a five gallon bucket of water and let it sit for about ten minutes and expect it to kill off viruses that your gravity drip filter couldn't kill or filter out?
Seriously, how do you not have more subscribers!! Love Thomas videos! Great job
We ask ourselves that question everyday, and quietly weep.

I'm not sure about this, but FYI, on canister filters WITH built in UV, light is on intake port, before mechanical and bio filters.
Nice too see you how is your big tank
We did a brief update on the 265gal a couple weeks ago-- check it out here: ruclips.net/video/NUXIjWw6hVI/видео.html
